• Pony MUSH

Scribus has put together a My Little Pony MUSH. For those unaware, a MUSH is basically a MUD, which is a text-based adventure game!

He says that the project is in open beta, and he's looking for ponies to test it out, and perhaps for larger roles as well, such as RPing the mane characters. He is also looking for moderators.

Check it out! The Ponychan thread is here.

You can also simply join the server by pointing your MUD client at equestriandawn.dyndns.org.

    2. Oh wow, I'm flashing back to 1998, and Telnet, and my friends building DikuMUD variants.

For those of you who were not around during the era of 56k modems, it might be better to describe a MUD as a text-based MMO.

    6. You did not specify a port number. For MU*s, there isn't really a "default" port number...

Anon2 basically said it right, as its hard with the more graphical generations of today to understand this old school form of gaming. I always liked to say its a chatroom where you can kill people. Its also the oldest form of online gaming, traced back to 1974.

My bad. I was going off the information in the email.

    10. The URL does lead to a HTML site where you can find more information, like the ever handy port number.

However, the MUSH itself seems EXTREMELY incomplete. I play on other mushes, and have even done some of the coding on three (one failed, one is a raging success, one is smallish) and from what I can tell... This place started advertising for players far too soon. This place needs builders, people capable of making text descriptions etc. and a decent coder. No +help, no BBS...

    11. I think, this might be worth dusting off my MU client.

    12. There used to be MLP MUSHes way back in the 90s. Of course, all based on G3 and earlier ponies.

MUSHes (and variants such as MUCKs and MUDs and MOOs) were neat for a while but most ended up just turning into chat areas with very little roleplay (except for back-room cybersex roleplay).

Thanks for the input. This is my first attempt, and I was hoping to attract more experienced players for advice.

I can make excuses all day, but at the end of it all I admit I stumbled here. If you (or anyone else with experience) would be willing to help, I'd welcome it eagerly.

And if not, thanks for the current feedback, anyway.

    15. Seth, when you get a chance, please either turn that last mention into a url site link so that people know they can get connection info there, or add the port after the port number after mentioning where to point one's MUD client. Or both.

Anyway, I'm totally digging this. I just wish I were a more competent builder and could help out more rather than idle around and chat up people.

    16. I can say this much I became a big fan of MUD's when I was in college and even today I like to haunt my favorite one every once in a while.
Understanding that this is an uncompleat MUD i'll look at it and see what I think later today.

I want to help, but I can't (right now) invest the time and effort to help as part of your staff.

HOWEVER, I can give you 3 pieces of advice quickly and easily that I think will make things much better.

Firstly, make sure all the guest characters are put on the Newfoals channel. This is vital for getting communication with potential players.

Second, get a BBS set up. They are great tools for building a MUSH in the first place. A good one can be found at http://myrddin.annelions.com/

Third, beware of scope creep. That's the main reason the Mush I tried to start failed. It's kind of a long story.

    18. A MUSH to me is greatly preferable to a MUD. MUD are essentially a stripped down MMORPG as they are the precursor to them.

While the MUSH is exactly what MMORPGs should have drawn most of their inspiration from instead of the MUD. Pure roleplaying goodness. We wouldn't have the grind problems and min/maxers and other types in MMORPGs that we see today and the "roleplaying" in MMORPG would be more accurate if they had drawn more inspiration from MUCKs, instead of MUDs. The fact people will harass you know for roleplaying, in a supposedly roleplaying game, is dumbfounding, and an irritation that pushes me away from MMORPG games.

Purely personal opinion, don't get too mad, please.

    19. While this has kinda happened a while ago, I suppose I should mention that this link needs to be updated to point to http://equestriandawn.blogspot.com/ now with the new contact info, login info, and ToS. The MUSH has expanded considerably since it was initially linked here.

    20. I too have created a pony mush.

I'm currently still building New Ponyville (rewriting the descs of the village from what is was before to what I need {I just imported the database from my previous mush so I wouldn't have to remake every little code} for this new pony mush) and it should be ready in sometime.

Areas that you can go to now include : The OOC Nexus, The Hanging Gardens, The Park, and The Island.

      Oh, and The Linking Nexus.

These can be reached by using the Myst-like linking books found in the Linking Nexus.

Anyway, drop on by and give it a test run and if there are any problems let me know about them right then.
