The company producing it (Madman Entertainment), tends to focus on box sets. It is unknown at this time if we will actually see this format used for FiM, but if they do go the set route, I have a feeling a whole bunch of imports are about to go down in Australia.

ReplyDeleteWould be nice but I think DVD players read only region-specific discs... Then again computers aren't formatted that way IIRC.
As soon as somepony somewhere on the offers a full Season 1 Box with the original English audio (or single DVDs that can be combined into one without problems), I'll throw my money at them, even if they are at the other side of the world.
ReplyDeleteI'm taking a "wait and see" on this one since this could just be a re-pack of what episodes have already been released here just in a single-disc format. HOWEVER, if it does turn out that this is a more credible attempt at releasing the episodes IN ORDER then I'll be hunting for an importer faster than Fluttershy can say "Yea!". ^_^

ReplyDeleteOdds are it's the same 5 episodes that will be going into the forthcoming Shout Factory DVD (Friendship is Magic parts 1 and 2, Over a Barrel, Hearth's Warming Eve, and The Last Roundup).
Oooh... This could be exciting, yes.... Australia is still the only place where you can get a legal full Earthworm Jim box set... Maybe FiM will follow. I really hope so <3

127 minutes isn't very special at all, but considering it's Madman who's licensing it, it's most likely just going to be one of the american sets - though a proper volume 1 wouldn't be totally out of the question.
Madman, for people who aren't aware, are THE big localisation team for Australia and I think New Zealand. Almost all Anime and some Manga comes through them, and they also delve in DVD sets for general animation. They do pretty much all the Cartoon Network stuff from what I'm aware, which I would assume is part of the reason why they're doing it, though one can hope it's also for us Aussie bronies.
Whilst this is only going to be a 5-episode thing, Madman have sold box sets for less popular shows, so a season set for us Australians isn't totally out of the picture.
Really, I'm just glad that i can buy it online. Hooray for anonymousness!

As far as I can tell, this is basically just going to be what Shout Factory is putting out. A several episode set. But not an entire season of course. It's 127 minutes, do the math. It's nice for the Australians that want that I suppose.

ReplyDeleteAusrtralia is region 4. 110 minutes = 5 episodes, so it will probably be that + bonus (hopefully some behind the scenes instead of just bullshit). I'll buy this as long as there are plans to continue producing them, they're in order and it isn't too expensive.
ReplyDeleteCorrect me if I'm wrong, but isn't Australia on the same TV system as the UK (PAL, 50Hz and so on)? I believe Games Consoles are, at least. If so this is incredibly good news for European Bronies too. Well, except our bank balances, but they're rarely happy right now.

ReplyDeleteI agree... Import this baby, even if you have nothing to play it on. If the lovely land down under shows staggering DVD sales in a more structured episodic format, it might open some eyes to the profitability of BOX sets.

ReplyDeleteThe difference in length is bound to just be obligatory extra trailers or somesuch, but Madman have a history of adding extra stuff like art/bios on extra dvd menus or the like too. Plus, anything that can be released in a box set probably will be. Plus, they don't play silly buggers with episode orders either.
Oh well, I'll just wait 'till the release date is a bit closer for hopefully some more information first.
Gotta love Madman, almost all my anime DVDs have come from them, they've got a good history of making box sets too. Nice to see they're looking out for the Australian bronies.

So 5 episodes and 17 minutes? What else could be on that DVD??? I don't recall any episodes being shorter than 22 minutes so I can't see it being 6 episodes anyway you slice it (unless you edit them!) Australian bronies, we will require a full report when this gets produced.

ReplyDeleteYes, this is something for North American bronies to keep in mind: not all DVD players, even if they've been made region-free, can play PAL-encoded DVDs. I have a region-free Australian-produced DVD of Mr. Bug Goes to Town, and about half the DVD players I've tried it on couldn't play it because it's in PAL format.
I own the Danish one episode DVD.

ReplyDeleteAh, so it doesn't work like NTSC DVDs on PAL TVs, where it'll play if the regions are correct just not in colour. Interesting. Though, if you play it through a computer it's not a problem since they generally don't adhere to television standards anyway and (in my experience) can play either.

For your information, Australians speak English the same way the English speak English. It's Americans who kiiiinda speak a different language- every other English speaking country uses the same rules and such, while in America words have different pronounciations or spelling.
It's all English, but Australians speak the 'true' English more than Americans do :p
I'm cautiously optimistic about this DVD thing, but I'm also worried it will be $10 per episode or something like that. A season set of Doctor Who (about 13 episodes) costs over $170 in a few stores down here in Australia. Ordering it from the UK saves a lot- in fact, retailers are kicking up a fuss because so many Australians are purchasing online to avoid not the tax as they assume, but the retail mark-up.
