• Discussion: Your Toy Buying Experience

A thread over on Ponychan keeps getting emailed to me about this, so why not?

I know not everyone out there has sucked it up and bought a pony, but a good amount of us have.  It's kind of hard not too...

What was your experience like?  Did the cashier question you?

I admit, for my first pony toy buying experience I used the typical "buying it as a gift" excuse when asked who I was getting them for.  It wasn't until the Mcdonalds toys rolled around that I started getting ballsy enough to straight up say how awesome the ponies were.

    So what's your story?

    1. Yes! My favourite ponychan thread ^^

    2. No story here.
Walked into a toy shop. Entered the aisle with girl toys. Picked up Rarity and Twilight. Go to the cash. Ladie behind ask "Cash or Credit". I said Cash and payed. Than I put both boxeses into my suitcase and left. Ta-Daa.

I don't see anything hard in this.

    3. Half the time I just do the wimpy thing and use the self check out in WalMart. Though in places where I have to actually go up to the counter in person, they don't seem to notice that a 24 year old is buying a Cheerilee. They just kinda smile like it's normal.
I don't know if it's because of politeness or because it's not as weird to buy ponies if you're also a girl.

    4. Walked into Big Lots. Picked up toy. Payed. Walked out.
      The end

    5. While I haven't been in toy stores to check, I don't believe they will be available in Sweden until Season 1 airs over here. When that happens, we'll have to see if I have the courage to buy the whole set.

    6. Mine was pretty simple.
My friend and I both love the show and I wanted to buy a couple figurines. He bought a couple himself and I got three figurines.
Went through the self-check out at WalMart and that was that.

    7. First I bought Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy on the road at a WalMart.

Then when I took a few days off at home, I went to that WalMart and picked up the other 4.

      ReplyDelete
    8. When I picked up the figurines from Big Lots, the cashier asked me about them, but I told her about the Bronies and whatnot and told me she was one herself and grew up with G1.

Strangely enough, I didn't get any questions when I bought Fluttershy and Applejack from Walmart.

    9. I've bought toys a few times and I'm always nervous when I do. I always get asked if I want a gift receipt and I always turn it down. Never been asked who or why I'm buying them though.

I'm waiting for the day a Brony rings me up. I always secretly hope someone says something when I go to check out.

    10. I went to walmart each time to purchase my ponies; Rainbow Dash first, then Applejack, and then this weekend I said FUCK IT and bought Twilight (despite the awful, awful hair that is pink/purple).

The first two times I was with my parents, but sine the toys are near the sports area and there's a cashier there, I did it alone. The third time, a few days ago, I got Twilight, a big glass with some gel inside that can freeze, and a mousepad, and bought all three at the front of the store. My parents weren't there this time either.

No one questioned me, but yes, I of course had the "as a gift" excuse prepared in case the question came up. Though after buying awful TS, I stopped giving a shit. All three ponies now are on my desk where my desktop computer is.

    11. I currently have not seen any MLP:FiM toys in the UK.

Although I haven't particularly look. Anyone know if anywhere in the UK supplies them?

    12. The hardest part was to find it.

    13. Couldn't do it. Went on Amazon where the only one who knows my shame is the computer that monitors my purchases.

I managed to snatch a Fluttershy on European border by ebay.

The seller didn't apreciate my critic:
"My little pony, my little pony, aaaah-aaaah-aaaa~"

What's not to like about it 8(?!

    16. I bought the fashion style rarity toy (larger model than the singles.) at a Target. I also had to pick up some other things while I was there, but the guy at he checkout discreetly asked me if I wanted it "wrapped" as soon as it was on the counter (As in, quickly scan it then wrap it in a bag before the people behind me could see it while he was ringing everything else up.)
He was a pretty cool guy about it, actually.

    17. Went into Big Lots with a couple non-brony friends. We roamed around a bit and I spotted Twilight Sparkle and Pinkie Pie. I took them and my friends just laughed. We went to the cash register. The cashier just kind looked at me and jokingly asked, "Will these complete your collection?" We all laughed. One of my friends bought a sparkly hat and the other, the only girl of the group, bought a Hot Wheels car. The cashier joked about how she made the manliest purchase.

    21. 1)Open internet browser.
2)Go to online version of a store.
      3)Select ponies.
      4)Enter debit information.
5)Wait a few days for delivery.
      6)???
      7)Profit! and ponies!

Of course, that's just because I'd rather have a package of pony at my door than a load of questions from a curious cashier or other consumer. Manliness in the public view and ponies: it's a hard choice to make.

    23. I have balls the size of a small country, apparently. I had no problem going into TRU, getting everypony, and walking to the checkout with hands full.

I even told two other customers - with ponies in hand - that they should watch the show. One of them looked at me weird but the other one got out a pen and paper, asked where and when it was on. I told them the Hub schedule and also to look it up on YouTube.

      Feels good pony.

    24. I bought the 2 inch ones, the mane 5 (no fluttershy available yet). I stood in line for an hour while old women around me gave me questioning looks. I just stood tall and remembered that "I'm a proud Brony" and walked to the cash, made no excuses and bought them.

    25. I took my little cousin to a shopping centre to get her some toy she wanted (her parents and mine were too busy, both grandparents are dead and I'm the only one in my house old enough to drive). Anyway we stopped by Mcdonalds for lunch and she ordered a happy meal and got a Fluttershy model. As kids do she got bored and I picked it up off the table because she was going to leave it behind. I put it in my pocket, said yes quietly in victory and walked off casually. I also aquired Rainbow Dash with some friends when one of them jokingly ordered a happy meal. Same story, I picked it up. My 2 favourite ponies on my desk now ^_^ that's good enough for me.

    26. I'm a girl. It's much less awkward that way. But I did get one weird look when I was ringing out my Rainbow Dash figure...

      ReplyDelete
    27. Being in the UK means they haven't started selling the ponies over here yet (heck, the SHOW hasn't aired over here yet). So I have to wait for now...

      ReplyDelete
    28. I honestly tried to keep my love for MLP:FiM secret when I bought my first ponies since I was a 15-year old male looking around in the girl's toys aisle, but my experience ended up being pretty awesome and led to me not caring if people see me buy ponies.

I went to WalMart, picked up Twilight and Fluttershy off the shelves since that was all they had, and headed to the cashier. Turns out the cashier was a brony as well.

Cashier: "You're buying My Little Pony toys? Hahaha What're they for?"
Me: "Uh... Little girl's birthday party."
      Cashier: "Oh really?"
      Me: "Eeyup (Macintosh style)"
Cashier: "You sure you're not a brony?"
      Me: o.o
      Cashier: "Hahaha I knew it."

Now I find no shame in buying ponies.

      ReplyDelete
    29. I considered the smaller toys, but they just don't really appeal to me. We need figurines man, metal figurines. And proper ones, modelled after the ponies from the show. If we ever get those, I'm all over them.

      ReplyDelete
    30. I went to wal-mart and the guy gave me a weird look. I kinda just ignored him, and I had a response if he asked me: "Don't question me..."

      ReplyDelete
    31. I got some odd stares when I bought the 5 pack from Toys R' Us. One of the cashiers went to high school with me, but she didn't say anything. Neither of them asked any questions actually, which made it a bit weirder. It was my dad who thought it was weird when I brought home this extravagant looking box.

      ReplyDelete
    32. I worked at McDonald's for a while, and they always thought I was kind of weird, so they didn't even blink twice when I walked into my old store and asked what ponies they had. They even brought out some from the back so I could have the whole set, score one for co-worker comeraderie.

I've never been questioned at the toy store. Unless you go in wearing a shirt with a giant Celestia on it and a Pinkie Pie wig, most people won't automatically assume it's for you. 99% of the adults in the store are buying toys for their kids, the cashier probably won't even think about it.

      ReplyDelete
    33. @Anonymous Actually, I saw some MLP FiM toys at Fætter BR in Viborg (Denmark) yesterday. AND My fiance found a Pinkie Pie in Fætter BR in Helsingborg (Sweden) this week when he bought a birthday gift for his niece. I also emailed ToysR'Us' office for Scandinavia, but they told me they have no plans on taking the line of toys in.

I'm one observant filly ;D xD

    36. I was shopping in Target with my mom, looking for gifts for my cousins. While she was down one aisle, I went straight to the girl toy aisle where the ponies were. I felt so embarrassed just to pick one up to look at. Finally, my mother found me in the aisle eying at the toys. I was gonna say, "nothing good here" when she said, "Do you want one of those?" Biting my lip, I then confessed my love for ponies to her and how badly I wanted one. She just smiled and said, "I'll buy the ponies for you, sweetie!". I still felt embarrassed, but at the same time, felt like a kid again and when me and my mother use to went shopping for toys together so long ago. I think she felt the same way, too. I know it's a dumb little story, but at least I scored Rarity and Fluttershy out of it and I felt had a good moment with my mom during that event. I might be a 20 yr old women, but my mom still sees me as her little girl(go figure XP). No questions from the cashier(since we had other toys to buy for my cousins as said earlier), I'll definitely get some soon once I go out to buy the rest of the pony gang and then some!

    37. Went to a Toys'R'Us a few months back and bought the FiM gift set. When checking out the cashier asked me jokingly if they were for me, and I just said "yes" and told her about the shows immense popularity. Then she said that was cool and she would have to check it out and asked me what it was called again. It's never as big of deal as some people would think.

    38. A couple weeks ago, I manned up and grabbed the 5-pack gift set at my nearby Target. I stopped by after work, so I was still wearing my business clothes. Cashier was an elderly lady, who didn't seem to give me any weird looks or ask questions. I deftly swiped my debit card while acting totally professional and calm. Got it bagged and headed out to the parking lot.

Once I got in my car, I giggled like a maniac as I tore into the package, and I drove home loudly singing MLP songs with a huge grin on my face, as all five characters sat on my dashboard.

Once I got home, I had to ninja-sneak my ponies inside because my family still doesn't know I'm a brony. I left the packaging in my locked car trunk because it was gonna be a full week until garbage day, and if I put it in the trash ahead of time, it would get noticed.

The next day, for no discernable reason, my mom decided to go out to MY car with MY keys and open MY trunk (which is almost always empty; she really had no logical reason to do this), and asked me about the empty MLP box. I'm ashamed to say I lied to her, and claimed I found the box in someone's trash and I planned to prank one of my younger siblings with it. She believed me, but I sorta wish I could just come out and say I'm a brony. D:

(Seriously though, I'm confused as heck as to why she randomly happened to check my trunk the DAY AFTER I GOT HOME. It's not like she's suspecting me of doing something wrong, I'm really well-behaved and she trusts me quite a bit.)

I also checked three(!) Wal-Marts and a Big Lots in my area, with absolutely zero MLP merch in any of them. The Wal-Marts didn't even have a spot on the shelves to hold them!

    39. lol I've spent more money than I'd care to admit on pony, I have everything available in my area. at first I was a little embarrassed about it, but at this point I seriously couldn't give a fuck, and have actively discussed the show and toys with a least a dozen customers and store employees. there's even a TRU cashier, really cute girl too, that knows me as the guy that comes and buys ponies. I have pretty bad ADD, so I usually keeps something small in may pocket to fiddle with when I'm bored, and lately I've been rotating through my pocket ponies. I have no shame about ponies, and pretty much everyone I know, in my personal life and even at work, is aware of my interest in the show. I've even converted several of my friends and coworkers to bronies, it's pretty fucking awesome.

      ReplyDelete
    40. II've been thinking this over, actually. I live in London, and there aren't any toys out here yet (although I did nearly spend £25 on a blind bag Fluttershy the other day - confound these ponies!), but I've been trying to decide whether to be ashamed of liking this show or not.

And weirdly, the last time I felt kind of conflicted about liking a show was Powerpuff Girls back in the day, so it's clearly a product of whatever freaky subliminal messages Lauren Faust puts in her shows.

But it's an awesome show, and if it was anything like the previous My Little Pony series, animation geeks wouldn't be watching it, so I'm just going to buy the hell out of these toys.

      ReplyDelete
    41. No toys for me.. Even buying a new Pokemon game or whatever is crippling enough as it is. Screw social phobias.

Besides, I'd rather see better versions of the show's ponies, or a better nod to the show's brony demographic. >_>

    44. I have to say Hasbro's plan is working.

As for me, really, I honestly don't give a f*ck if a cashier chuckles for me buying a pony. I'm 18 years old, I'm a man with long hair and a beard, I listen to metal and whatnot, and I love a cartoon intended for little girls. I've done covers of the songs on the show (One of which was a test of my new guitar), done image macros and stuff for Deviantart, drawn sketches of ponies, and converted some of my friends into bronies. I am a manly brony and proud of it!

Wow, I just got off on a wild tangent. O.O

    49. I bought my first one the other day at Target. Absolutely no comments at all from the cashier, perhaps because I'm a girl. Wasn't a big deal at all.

Here's the thing, though: I've worked in retail for eight years and nobody cares what you buy. Anyone who "questions" you is just trying to make small talk; they do it with every customer. Some cashiers are more talkative than others. Regardless of whether or not they mention anything, I can guarantee that they will have forgotten about you completely about thirty seconds after you leave. Trust me.

So get out there and buy some ponies, people.

      ReplyDelete
    53. I've only bought two blind bags, and I wasn't really that worried about what the cashier would think.

I was more concerned about the fact that I was in the store with my mom, who knows nothing about my love of ponies. I was wandering on my own when I noticed that those blindbags were sold in that store, and I spent quite a while pondering should I buy those, and If I do, should I just explain to my mom why I'm buying those and so on.

I decided to buy those, but I avoided having to explain ponies to her by saying that I was too tired of walking and standing around (It was believable enough, I was moving that day so I had been carrying a lot of stuff up and down the stairs and so on), so I'd go ahead and go to the car already while she was still getting some groceries.

I just went to the cash registers with the two blindbags and two manga volumes I was buying, paid, and put the blingbags in my bag and went to the car to wait for my mom.

    55. I was at Target with two of my friends, and one of them bought the other rainbowdash for his birthday there. The three of us went up to the checkout and the lady looked at us and smiled, saying "I don't judge :)", we payed with cash and thanked her, ecstatic at the fact that one of us had a pony.

The two of them went into the bathroom to open up the packaging, because my friend who had the birthday was embarrassed to carry around the my little pony box. As we were leaving the store I asked if I could see it, but he was to embarrassed to take rainbowdash out of his pocket where it couldn't be seen, so I yelled "JOHN GIVE ME THE PONY!" and everyone looked at us.

    58. I am a Spaniard and Toys in my country are scarce. The only pony toys we have here are from G3, and Sugarcube Corner with a miniature of Sweetie Belle.

But I can account for my experience when asking for the toys at the store clerks and they didn't gave me any looks or anything. I wasn't using an excuse, just asking for the toys. They are quiet open minded here :3 I can't wait for the time they start selling the regular toy series here XD Eager!!!

    59. My first time, I was with my mom. So she covered for me. The second time, however, it was freaking weird 'cause I was all by myself. I had to work my way to that extremely pink isle of the store. I'm 18, so it really didn't make much a difference where I was, the fact that I was in the toy section was probably creepy enough lol then I went in for the kill, andbought the rest of the cast that I didn't get the first time around. Luckily, nobody asked questions, so I was pretty safe.

    60. The only reason I'll buy a pony would be if it was a decent Luna. Never really been interested in toys.
However, if Hasbro came out with a pony statue/trophy then I'll instantly buy it. If any of you guys has ideas on creating one from the current toy line, I'll listen. I'll just have to find a way to explain it to my anti-brony friends (the only brony in the social group... it gets lonely).

    63. I've picked up a variety of Pony goods from Big Lots and Target without ever running into any issues in the purchase. No odd comments, judging looks, or anything like that. Except for one time which I found sort of odd.

I was in the pink section looking over a few brushables I was debating buying when a mother and her daughter came into the row. Kid couldn't have been more than six. She immediately snatched up a Pony multipack and started going on about how Celestia was her favorite, which made me smile. But for some reason the mother was shooting me this death glare the whole time. I'm still not sure what her problem was, but it's the closest thing I've had to a bad experience with Pony purchases.

    64. @NinesTempest

I'm in the Midwest too, northeast Illinois. I was very thorough in checking the shelves, they simply don't sell anything.

At any rate, I personally prefer the molded-hair ponies over the combables, so the only ones I still need are the 2" figures from Big Lots or the Blind Bags (which are coming to the US as posted yesterday! 8D)

      ReplyDelete
    65. Until the Blind Bags come in... I only bought the Ponyville 4 pack of 2 inch figures on Ebay because otherwise it is Pink Celestia and her friends and.. well.. Applejack doesn't have a hat! >:( And No Rainbow Dash or Pinkie Pie!

I did buy a Pinkie Pie with brushable hair for my buddy as a joke. The cashier didn't say anything.

My Commander and XO however were shocked when they encountered me. I told them "FUCK YEAH! PONIES!"

    67. I used to frequent stores for Pokemon cards, so the same principle applies to ponies. Walk in with a smile, love and tolerate (though they're probably doing more tolerating than you are), and in my experience, I've had no problems or awkwardness.

On the downside, that doesn't make for very entertaining stories. )=

      ReplyDelete
    68. I had a REALLY weird experience
My bro asked me to buy the mane cast, and on the way there was a donation drive and since it was payday i decided to buy some toys to donate. Once I got to the Toys R Us I pile all the G4 Ponies into the tiny cart while an old lady and her granddaughter glare at me. I separate the ponies meant for my bro and i and i got in line. I started quietly humming the theme when the old lady from before starts yelling at me "PEDOPHILE, PERVERT" I told her that the toys arent for children they are for ME. There was another brony in the store, the manager, who escorted the old lady out. When I got to the parking lot i asked the little girl if she wanted a pony. the maybe 8 yr old girl asked "can i have the nerf gun instead"
      Yes, yes you can

      ReplyDelete
    69. I got my Rainbow Dash figure from Amazon, since the nearest Wal-Mart (at the time) didn't have it. Hopefully, there will be more or at least have the blind bags so I can get them personally.

      ReplyDelete
    70. I proudly strode into Toys 'R Us in Times Square and, in my deepest and most intimidating young-Hispanic-male voice, asked the tired-looking cashier where ponies might be found. She, slightly taken aback, pointed me towards them, and I rummaged through the ugly G3 toys until I found a G4 Pinkie Pie that I liked. It was pretty straightforward—no false gift justification or pony apologism necessary.

      ReplyDelete
    71. My own pony buying stories are non that interesting. Mainly I have been nervous inside my own head and the cashiers have seem oblivious. (post#10717)

But I had one event regarding ponies. You see my parents are not aware of my newly come Bronydom, but they know that I like to collect figures (mainly video-game ones). So they only know that I have been searching 'some' figures these past weeks, just not that I was looking for ponies.
But one day soon after my first purchase I happened to see my dad have double-take when he walked to my computer where I have lined my blind bag ponies on top of my external hard-drive. He did not question me about them any further. Had he done so, I would have had to tell the truth I guess.

      ReplyDelete
    72. Sorry for the double post, but incidentally, Rosario: that's awesome. I bet that girl grows up with a more enlightened view of gender roles than any of her peers.

      ReplyDelete
    73. More Scandinavian bronies than expected! How pleasent!

Anyway, whenever I'm in town I visit the toy stores in hope of pony. There were only the G4 kind, so I waited until either the McDonalds or those single satuetes(?) I've heard about.
But I eventually caved in, and bought G4 Applejack- and Fluttershy-singles. No questions asked.

And now I comb their mane every day!!! (OuO) I've also decided to get the rest of them, but only one-a-month as I am financially cautious.

    74. Mine was fairly uneventful. Strolled into Wal-Mart and into the toy section, picked up Fluttershy and the gift box with Celestia in it, checked out at a normal counter then walked out like a boss... No one questioned or looked at me oddly.

    75. Snatched Rainbow Dash and Applejack from Walmart. The cashier asked me, unsure "Are you really buying those My Little Pony toys?"
I responded: "Yes, are you really trying to turn away good business and money?"
That shut him up real quick. Later I went back for Rarity, Twilight, and Pinkie. Sadly no Fluttershy :(

      ReplyDelete
    76. You don't find them here in Belgium unfortunately :/ Otherwise I would just buy them, looking the cashier straight in the eye :p

That wouldn't be that hard considering the fact I've done several oral exams on my laptop with a Rainbow Dash background :p

    77. I've got a great story. I was at my local Fred Meyers looking at the toy section. There were a few ponies, but a lot of it was G3 stuff that I wasn't interested and the G4 stuff was the "light up when squeezed" toys that I didn't really want either. I was about to leave when a small girl walked into the aisle with her father. She immediately pointed to a Polly Pocket toy pack which was $22. The father grimaced at the price. I spoke up, recommending ponies. They were placed higher on the shelves than the little girl's vision so she hadn't noticed them before, and strode over to give them a look over. She almost immediately fell in love with the Sweetie Belle and Pinkie Pie candy shot playset, which was a much more reasonable $13. The dad got it off the shelf and handed it to his daughter who hugged it and skipped off as content as could be. The father gave me a nod because I had saved him a fair bit of money and then walked off after his daughter.

    79. First time was at Target, buying the 5-piece set. The cashier asked me if I wanted a gift receipt. Same thing happened later at Toys R Us (buying a back-up 5-piece set when it went on sale for half price). I'll admit I was kinda nervous then, since I've never shopped in the pink aisle before this show, but I tried not to make a big deal out of it when I went to pay.

The best experience, though, was at Big Lots, buying the smaller figurines. The cashier (a young woman) started ringing them up and immediately went, "Aaaaawwwwwww, how cuuuuuute!!" She had the biggest smile on her face too, which made me smile. I wish more cashiers could be as awesome as that.

    80. A friend and I were in Toys R Us browsing the Pony section and talking about how the toys differ from the show. We were especially bugged by the pink Celestia, since she was white on the package. Some parents were staring at us, kind of scared, and they assumed we were shopping for some kid we knew, felt better about themselves, and moved on.

Hey Anonymous Belgium: They ARE here!:) I've got the whole cast. They're at Dreamland, Fun, Bart Smit and your local toystore as well. Basically everything but the Blind bags can be found here:)

I've got no problem with buying ponies:) I think it IS easier when you're a filly. The first time the G3's hit toystores here I got some weird looks when I walked to the register with my arms filled up with ponies, and a crazy grin on my face:) The 400 pony-mark has long passed.
Being a crazy pony lady doesn't hurt ^_^

    87. Best Pony buying experience EVAR. I'm a dude (albeit, probably one of the most feminine you will ever meet in your entire life, you'd think I was a girl if you didn't know me personally :D) and I go into Walmart to buy some dinner. I decide to see if they have any pony toys, and they had the set with the plastic haired Celestia, Twilight, Pinkie, AJ, & Spike. I go up to pay for it, and the guy at the counter is like 'MLP? Isn't it awesome? Are you a brony?' I lol'd & we had a convo about MLP while he was checking out the rest of my stuff :)

      ReplyDelete
    88. From the UK so no toys here but, due to good timing I suppose visited the USA earlier this year so while over I took advantage.

My experience was out with friends in Wallmart at like 2am half drunk after a house party and seeing MLP toys, so just picture 4 drunks paying for ponies then rushing to open them in the parking lot afterwards.

The only people who felt awkward that night must had been the staff.

      Hey Uk Anon.
I've found one place that sells them, Midco Toy Planet at the Westfield centre in Derby. Popped in a few times now and I think the clerks have sussed I'm some kind of pony fan xD
They've got a bit of stuff on their site http://www.midcotoyplanet.co.uk (not affiliated, just a toy addict!)

      ReplyDelete
    90. I was looking for Fluttershy in this one store and they didn't have it there, just a stupidly expensive Rainbow Dash. I asked them if they might have anything in the back and they said no.

One of the clerks, though, told me to try out this other store in the mall that I was at, and I eventually found a bunch over there. I found a super cheap two pack with Fluttershy and Daisy Dreams (the whole thing was even less than the RD I saw before). And, I just straight up bought it.

At the register she asked me if I wanted a bag and I'm like, "nope." She gave me a wierd look and then I thought... "Oh, little girls toy, right."

      I still didn't get a bag though.

So, on the way back I rode the tram for about 45 minutes with people everywhere. It occured to me that I should be ashamed to have this big pink package with me, but I manned up.

Mind you, this was mostly taking place in Polish and I suck at the language.

    91. I bought Fluttershy. Cashier smiled, didn't say anything. But somehow that's normal to our Toys'R'Us Cashiers. Normally they don't ask too many questions. :P

    92. I haven't bought any because they're not here yet, but I don't see why it would be difficult (and I'm a shy person).

    93. I've yet to buy any, but thanks to the comments above, I know that they're in Belgium. Next time I meet up with friends, I gotta get myself some!
There is a toy store near my school. I really should get them there. Aww crap, now I'm looking forward to going there :P

      ReplyDelete
    94. Let's see....I bought the gift set off ebay and I went to Wal-Mart to get Rainbow Dash and Twilight. I ended up as some sort of example of what a girl toy is that this cashier wanted. This little kid wanted to give her a boy's toy. XD And she picked up mine and said she'd rather have one of these. It was cute, even if I felt a bit weird standing there through that. But, outside that, no comments made as to why I was buying them *shrug* Of course, being a girl myself, she may not have thought that was weird.

I went back a while later and got Applejack and Pinkie Pie. Once again, no questions or weird looks.

The bf bought me Rarity when we made a stop a TRU when I brought my DS with me to try for the Pokemon Egg event (which didn't WORK cause of the stupid WPA/WEP bullshit B/). He got me the pony as a gift for that. ^^

    95. I wore my Derpy Hoodie all the time everywhere until it got to hot, most of the toys I got I bought online but I did buy the bubble blowing Pinkie Pie...don't remember if I went threw self check out or not

      ReplyDelete
    96. Why would I buy an overpirced plastic trud, that barely reassembles the character it's supposted to be?

      ReplyDelete
    97. Well when I bought my Pinkie from Fred Meyers, the awkwardness wasn't from the cashier, but from my mother. After doing grocery shopping and getting a new vacuum, She asked me if there was anything else to get. With my allowance in my pocket, I thought of only getting ponies with it.
"Yeah there's one thing I have to check out. I'll be right back with it."
Mom saw how nervous I was and asked, "Oh, is it lady products?"
      "More embarrassing."
"More embarrassing then lady products? Now I'm concerned. What is it?" After a moment of silence I managed to get a word out.
      "P-ponies"
      "Ponies?"
After that we went to the toy section, where I spend a good 10-15 minutes deciding what pony I should get and my mother hung out outside the aisle pretending that she didn't know me. I finally picked out the light up Pinkie Pie (Mom loved how ironic it was that I bought a pink pony, since I've been a major tomboy since I was young) and I told her about bronies.
She's convinced that they are manchildren that don't want to grow up.

    100. I Live on a small island in the North Sea in Germany, ive looked in one store, but I couldn't find any. This Island is too small for such purchases. It would be a very akward situation if someone i knew from school would see me buying a Pony. On the other hand I really could use the "for my little sis' excuse", because I actually have a 5 year old Sister. But until the show is not aired, there wont be anyponies here.

      ReplyDelete
    101. To anypony who's hesitant to buy stuff:

Just don't say anything. If they're not a brony or at least aware of the older audience, they will almost surely think that you're buying as a gift or something. Let 'em think that.

Just stop being afraid. It's a pony toy, not a dress that you have to try on or something.

    102. My boyfriend and I went straight to the toy section, found the good set with Celestia (though pink....), Twilight, Spike, Applejack and Pinkie, and he bought it for us both. Though he only kept Spike :P

    106. Nate here. I was with a pretty big group of friends at the Target in my hometown. Most of us were bronies actually (bwahaha, I corrupted them with love and kindness!!!). I picked up Fluttershy and was like "hell yes, I'm getting Fluttershy", and my friends laughed. I ran into someone I remembered from school who worked there and he was like "You're not gettin that for yourself, are you?" I replied. "Uhh, actually, yeah" and laughed. He laughed and said. "I'm just gonna pretend I didn't hear that." and we parted ways. When we were finally leaving, I walked up to the register alone, totally pokerface. I wasn't nervous until this point, but luckily the cashier didn't ask, and I didn't say anything. We both just stood there with pokerfaces as I paid for Fluttershy, and I briskly left with my friends, a huge grin on my face. And That is how Equestria was made.

    109. I wouldn't be able to bring myself to buy a pony even if they were easier to find in the UK for several reasons.

Firstly because I don't want toys! I want 12 inch, hand painted, die-cast models!
Secondly because the toys that are available kinda suck.
And thirdly, not because it would be embarrassing to buy, but because it would be incredibly embarrassing to explain to my parents...

      ReplyDelete
    110. I'm not afraid to buy the toys....okay, that's a lie. Whenever I consider buying them I'm like Fluttershy facing a dragon. BUT I HAVE A GOOD EXCUSE! The designs for the toys are way too G3. Not in the style of G4 at all. Plus, I'd much rather a plushy than a traditional toy, and unfortunately, Hasbro hasn't made any plushies of them (at least as far as I know), and if they did, Fluttershy would probably be the LAST plushy they'd make...if only Hasbro listened to the fanbase the same way Studio B does...

Anyway, I've been meaning to make a comedy series about awkward situations a brony can get into...brony goes to Toys R Us, brings a pony to the counter, holds a coat in front of it, whispers to the cashier, "you never saw me here. ring it up quickly". Gets confronted by someone. Holds up the coat so they can't see it. Claims he's buying the new Call of Duty game...etc...

    113. I went out of my way to get all the toys from McDonalds. The first 2 were apart of a HappyMeal. The other 6 were just me asking the cashier there what Pony toys they had. Rainbow Dash was the hardest to get. I went to 3 different ones, and the last one she brought out basically all other ones, and said these are what we have. I told her I was looking for the blue one, and she went and check again. Last one at the back of the shelf. My day got 20% cooler after that.

    119. I finally (a few months ago now) manned up and got over to a mcdonalds, i got more ragging from my non-brony friend friend that drove me there to get the fluttershy than i did from any of the staff.

      ReplyDelete
    120. Me? I used that service the person doing the pins had where she would go out to the store and buy them for you. So I have a ton of pins coming in, as well as the $10 4-set of the 2" figures.

I want to check the local Big Lots for more, but the bus system is not especially fun, and I have no transportation available. I would probably use the excuse of gifts, if the cashier really felt compelled to ask the six foot guy, dressed in all black with military boots, and a body built like a football player why he was buying ponies.

      ReplyDelete
    121. I got Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy a few months ago. Went with a friend, a male brony, (I'm a female brony) who needed to run some errands at Target. There was nothing remarkable about our checkout, but on the way to find ponies there were several poles in the middle of the walkway in the target and he wheeled the cart around them like Rainbow Dash flies around trees during phase 1 of her routine from Sonic Rainboom. I told him this is why he is not allowed to drive my car.

But maybe Bronies don't let other bronies buy toys alone? It was way more fun with a buddy...probably because friendship is magic, of course. ;) The same brony also helped me get most of the mcdonald's toys, which I was more embarrassed about not because they were ponies but because I'm one of those annoying health conscious people who hasn't been in a mcdonald's in years! (He was my partner in crime because he lacked such prejudices. After a few happy meals we were both very happy to discover you could buy toys without food, as you can imagine.) He hadn't watched the show yet, but shortly after seeing how excited I was to get Rainbow Dash, he started watching.

    122. This weekend I'm going to hang out with my friend at a place called "Bo's" to play some laser tag. He is a Brony too, we ALWAYS talk about MLP. Fluttershy is his favorite, I need 15 bucks for an "Unlimited everything" card for Bo's, Gonna see if I can fish some extra money off my mom and go to the walmart near by and buy a Rainbow Dash like a bawss!

      ReplyDelete
    123. So I had a rather uneventful toy-buying experience. I went to Target and headed straight for the toy aisle. I found the pony section and looked over the toys they had. Aside from the gen3 stuff, there were some 5 dollar figures of the mane six, Applejack's barn, and a Celestia doll. I played with the Celestia doll for a while - it talked, though I found what it said rather demeaning for her character. They were all along the lines of "My wings are so pretty" and "I love making new friends".

I'd been standing there for a good ten minutes by then. I looked around. There were plenty of other shoppers at that time of day but they paid me no mind. Shrugging, I grabbed a five dollar Rainbow Dash and headed toward the register, stopping momentarily at the DVD section to get a few movies I've been wanting.

At the register, the cashier took a long look at the pony toy before scanning it but she didn't say anything. She probably thought it was a gift. And that's about it. As soon as I got home, I busted out the brush and scissors and immediately got to work styling Rainbow's hair to be more show accurate.

      ReplyDelete
    124. I went to the local Wal-Mart and bought the pony gift set at the same time I was buying the new Pokemon games. Since I was also buying a 2nd copy of Pokemon Black for my niece, I sneakily said I was getting her gifts for her birthday in addition to myself; which totally wasn't a lie! The ponies just happened to be for me. ;)

      ReplyDelete
    125. Confound these stories, they drive me to purchase low grade merchandise!

After reading some of these stories, I worked up the courage to actually look for Dashie like I had been wanting to for weeks. I went to Walmart, but I couldn't find them for the longest time. They had colorful little signs to show what specific merchandise was in that part of the aisle, but they had no sign in either of the pink aisles for MLP, so I almost lost hope, till I noticed that right next to the jigsaw puzzles were the ponies. So I stood in front of the puzzles while eying through the pony junk, eventually seeing a Fluttershy and Rainbow brush toy. I finally grabbed them, stuff themed into my shopping bag. Nothing eventful otherwise while at the store.
The hardest part would be sneaking them into my room. My mother, whose car I borrowed to make the run, isn't exactly open minded, and since she already has doubts about my sexual preferences and thinks that I'm anti social, I don't feel comfortable telling her yet. I left the bag in the car, knowing she wouldn't be going anywhere the rest of the day, and that I could get the toys later. After a while passed and my mother had settled in her room to a book, I went back to the car to grab them, I'm lucky I stopped to look at the toys before taking them out of the car, as when I turned around, I saw my mother in the kitchen, getting food. Luckily she didn't ask why I was back in the car, digging in the back seat. Tried again later and had more success. Now Dashie and Fluttershy are staring at me, begging me to brush them more.

Those were the only toys I even remotely wanted from the current selection. Unless better stuff comes out, this will probably be all for me.

And they have extensive knowledge of my friends and family...
And they are not quite aware of my pony-isms, despite me singing or making references all day.

    129. Went to TRU got help pinkie pie in my hands and I felt that I had to get something to counter act this so I got an amazing dead space 2 figure, another brony with me got fluttershy and a bioshock splicer mask, and the last brony got the big 5 piece set. We all walked up to the register and THEN they handed me everything with the money so i gave the cashier a big pile of ponies and a small pile of manly stuff. It was the day before easter so no questions from him. We were all pretty new to MLP at the time so thats why we where not mainly enough to buy just ponies.

    131. It was definitely nerve wracking for me and I certainly wasn't on planning on buying one either. 138. I'm a little girl so I can buy ponies without any problem ^^

    139. I think the first time it was harder for my parents more than anyone since I'm a teenage girl who was acting five begging my parents to bring me to TRU so I can buy ponies. XD
The cashier laughed a little bit when I was hugging and thanking my dad for it. Then another time at Target my mother questioned me when I wanted the Twilight Sparkle with the balloon. She knows I'm totally into the show, but she didn't want me to get the balloon. In the end, I did. :>
The best time I got ponies was the day I wasn't included in the purchase! One day I came home from school sick with my brother (who I turned into a Brony) and mom nowhere in sight, so I decide to take a nap. About an hour later my brother wakes me up holding dolls of Applejack, Rarity, and Rainbow Dash, exactly who I needed to complete the mane six. Apparently my mother had went to Target with my brother and she decided to buy them for me. I was so happy. ;w; Now they all sit on my dresser, manes restyled and all~ <3

Reading all of these stories, one day I wanna go to TRU and tell my mom to wait in the car while I go in and buy ponies alone. Like I said, I'm a girl, so it may not be as surprising as if it were a guy buying them, but still, I'd like to see what happens. XD

    140. My pony-buying experience was a bit hectic. I encountered no problem in the toy aisle, nopony else was around, so that part was quite easy. Hiding Rainbow and Fluttershy as I made my way to the check out was tougher then I thought. A few other customers shook their heads at the sight of a lone 23 year old male carrying a girls toy, kept my gaze fixed on the only check-out line that was available on that night. Unfortunately, the cashier at that lone check-out line was a rather mean-spirited kid I knew from high school who was hostile to me in the past simply because I used to be friends with another kid he didn't like. When it came my turn to check out, he narrowed his cold green eyes and grinned maliciously at me, "Still a f***ing usless, sad nerd, aren't you? Buying these pathetic girls' toys? Going home to mommy and daddy after this?"
I simply crossed my arms over my Doctor Who t-shirt and said, "First off, where I go is none of your business. And secondly, these toys make me about 20% cooler then you ever will be. Now Allons-y! Please serve a cause greater then yourself and scan the beginning of my soon-to-be-glorious Pony Collection!"
He said no more, his icy glare locked on me while he scanned my ponies. He managed to do all this without moving his head and blinking, which must've put quite a strain on his simple, brutish, violent mind...
I walked out happily and ignored the other customers and employees, my beloved Rainbow Dash in a plastic bag at my side...

Someday, I'll buy more, when I can get my courage up again!

    141. There are no G4 toys in glorious Vikingland yet. So I just ordered my 4-pack online. :3
My dad laughed his ass off when it came in the mail. My little sister begged that we would play with them together.

I dunno if I'd go into a store to buy some, though... I'm so socially awkward and shy that I even have trouble buying normal stuff.

    142. Went to check out Bart Smit (Belgium) today. They had a lot of G3 ponies and Twilight and Applejack from G4. But indeed, the really suck :p

    143. I love these ponies, and desperately wanted a Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash. Problem is that these toys are next to impossible to find in the UK.

Another major problem is that I'm a serious closet brony, and I simply could not justify my male, 18 year old self buying toys intended for little girls to my mother.

I made an elaborate scheme to secure these toys; evidence free.

Step 1) Set up a new, secret bank account, and pay £10 into it.
Step 2) Order toys online and pay to have them delivered whilst my mother was out.
Step 3) Hide my little ponies when mother comes back.

So anyway, I ordered my Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash wand awaited the next day delivery. I waited all morning until I only had minutes before mother returned home. Panicking, I rushed downstairs to find a "sorry, you were out" notice on the doormat. Upon pressing the doorbell I discovered that it was not working! Just my luck...

The next day, whilst my mum was at work again I headed out to the postal sorting office. I handed the man the note and he went to the back of the shelves to find my package. Moments later, he came back with a rather puzzled look on his face. He says to me "Is this right?" as he holds up two pink boxes, bound together with elastic bands. I was horrified to see that it wasn't even packaged inside another box, or even some brown paper. I just put on a pokerface expression and told him that my cousin was desperate for them for her birthday and she couldn't find them anywhere. The man in the sorting office believed that.

Once out of the office, I was very conscious of what I was about to do next: walk through my small home town, where everybody knows everybody, whilst carrying boxes of my little ponies in my hand. Walking through the empty car park was the easy part, but once getting to the end of a small path there was nowhere to go except through town. I held the boxes low in my hand and walked as close to the parked cars as possible. As soon as possible I zipped up a side street to cut to the other end of town.

      To be continued...

    144. Continued...

Half way home, I was feeling quite confident, right up until a man operating a dustbin truck saw me exiting the side street and said to me "Excuse me. You wouldn't be able to just bring that bin over here would you? That is, if you don't mind.". The way he said it, was just too much like Fluttershy, and since when do bin men ask people on the street for help? Hesitantly, I shifted the boxes to my other hand and brought the bin over to the truck. As he took the bin he leaned right over to see around me and told me Fluttershy was his favourite. This was hilarious. A big burly man whose favourite pony was Fluttershy. I couldn't help but grin. The man was asking me where I got them from, saying he desparately wants one to hang from the rear view mirror of the truck. He started beaming saying "ohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh", so I then showed him Rainbow Dash. He immediately exclaimed "Oh my god, you just got 20% cooler!". By this time, his fellow binmen were wanting to know what the holdup was, so he quickly put on the exact poker face I had before, turned around and told them to get ready to move on to the next street. Emptying the bin I gave him earlier into the truck he told me it was nice to talk to a fellow brony, and as the truck was leaving he leaned out of the window and told me that they'd have to empty all the bins in the next street in 10 seconds flat. I chuckled at this.

In a bit of a daze at what just happened, I walked home at a nice steady pace, no longer caring about holding the box as near to the wall as possible. The rest of the walk home was fairly uneventful, apart from when I got home and saw my best friend stood knocking at the door like a lunatic. I know friendship is magic and all but I dived behind the garden wall in 10 microseconds flat. (See what I did there?) I very swiftly dashed past the gate, and round the next street to get to the back of my house. Quitetly, I opened the door and let myself in. By this time my friend had left anyway, but it was still worth it to reduce the risk of being caught red hoofed. Safely back in my room, I chortled with glee as I opened up the boxes and rescued first Rainbow Dash, then Fluttershy! I adore them so much, even if they aren't accurate to the show. The only problem was disposing of the packaging, which consisted of a careful blend of packaging and lighter, followed by a brief flushing of the remains down the toilet. I could have really done with my friend the binman at this point...

Nonetheless, they now live on my computer desk whenever mother is out of the house, and hidden in a box of computer spares when she is in. Despite all odds, and everything conspiring against me, my desk is now 20% cooler. INHALLLLES... yay!

    145. A friend of mine just turned 21 and asked me to buy Pinkie Pie for her. I went to Target and couldn't resist not getting one for myself.
Once I got to the cashier, the lady recognized me (we used to go to High School together). She didn't directly ask me about the ponies but it still was very awkward.

    146. Confound these ponies!, they are not in Latin America.
Even if a decent pony appeared here I'm not sure what I would do.

    147. 25 years old brony here.
I have ordered the Happy Meal ponies through eBay (being in Europe I didn't have much chance of getting them in any other way) but I wanted to get the little molded pocket ponies aswell.
Though I could have ordered them, I decided this is a test of faith. The test of bronyship. I have to do this personally.

Tuesday. I walk into a toy store at 13:00. Due to being midday the store is completely empty, all the employes focus on me. Feeling a bit nervous.
I walk over to the girls department, being shocked by all the barbies and weird looking pony-monstrosities, mermaid ponies and god knows what else while I searched for my target blindbags. At this point I'm being asked by an employee if I need any help. Told her I'm just looking around. This happened once more on the way. I couldn't find the blindbags which I was looking for so sad and disappointed, I headed to the exit.

Wait...what's that? From the corner of my eye I see something familiar. I little basket, full of pony blindbags. Right at the cashier. At the entrance. In front of the security guy and two employes. In front of the goddamn security cameras.

      I took a deep breath.

"Fuck yeah I'm a brony" I told myself, grabbed the basket and started browsing through the bags, checking the codes on the packaging looking for the mane six, in front of the cashier and everyone.

Found RainbowDash (later on turned out I missed the code and got Roseluck but I kinda got fond of her by now and got RainbowDash in another store), Pinkie Pie, Twilight and Applejack.

By this time an employee asks if these have a certain code. Said yes. Found them on the net.
      She said it's cool.

Time to pay. I place the bags on the counter. We look at each other for a moment, exchanging a quite awkward moment of silence and stillness, then she proceeds.

She didn't ask for whom the toys are for.

That bothered me, I wanted to get totally humiliated, so I started a little conversation with her (store was still kinda empty so we had time). During our talk I admitted they are for me, also asked if there were other men of my age looking for these?

She said yes, but they all said it's for their niece / daughter.

I smiled and said "Yeah, that's what we all say". She smiled back and we parted.

A few weeks have passed and today I have completed my set with Rarity and Fluttershy.

These ponies are wicked. I'm totally hopeless and lost, ponified to the max. Can't recall the last time I got so excited over a toy or particulary any object, yet these little ponies gave me back the childish joy of opening the blindbags, having to supress my initial emotion to cheer loudly like a little girl.

      CONFOUND THESE PONIES !!! xD

    148. @Emil Bjrnfot

They are here in Sweden. I know. ;)

I just bought my first toy today. It was awesome. I walked into a store called "Lekia" and looked for ponies. I found them after like a minute because it's a really small store. I could see some odd looking G4 ponies, but I already had my mind set; buy a Pinkie Pie or Flutterhy. I saw several Rarity's, but they did not intrest me. I then found a Pinkie Pie in the back of the lowest case. (All the ponies were pratically by the floor.) I picked it up and examined it. Giggeling softly. I walked to the counter. I had to wait for a few seconds because a woman before me with her family bought a bottle of soap bubbles. I doubt they saw my pony, or even cared if they did. They walked off and I laid the pony on the counter. She asked if she wanted me to wrap it in. I was like: "Um... Nah, It's ok."
-"You sure? I can wrap it in for you if you want."
-"It's fine... It will soon be opend..."
Then I cracked. I felt like a fanboy meeting his life long idol for the first time, and my voice became hard to controll. I admitted that I like the show alot, and that this was an awsome pony. The lady at the counter agreed that it looked nice and I think that she understood that it was for me and that she accepted it. I payed a stunning 80 KR for it and I got a almost see-through white plastic bag. As I walked down the street on my 25 minute walk home, I am holding my bag discretely, trying to jam it down my giant pockets in my pants. I finally succeed and I feel calmer.

I have styled Pinkie's hair somewhat. It looks something of a mixture of Rarity's and Fluttershy's mane. She is currently pressed onto my netbook screen. She fit's really great. This is a picture I just took while writing this: http://i55.tinypic.com/156cmkh.jpg

    149. Kinda a late reply I guess but I figure I might as well share. I have two stories, neither of them really eventful. Anywho, I was with a recently converted brony and neither of us had anything to do so we decided to go to Target to buy ponies. We got there and immediately went to the little girl's section. We found the ponies and started talking about how they need to make them just a little show accurate. I complained that I didn't get gummy with pinkie. At the register I bought one for me (pinkie) and one for my girlfriend (rainbow). My friend didn't buy any. The lady at the register didn't give me a weird look or anything. I was almost hoping she would... We got back out to my car and I opened mine right there. I then proceeded to drive to my girlfriend's house to deliver the pony. Pretty boring, right? Second story now. It was the day of my friend's birthday (the same one from above) and I needed to get him something so I figured I'd give him a pony because he didn't have any. I went to the aisle (I knew exactly where it was by now) and grabbed AJ. When I was checking out the cashier jokingly asked if it was for me, and I told him they actually were. He just kinda laughed. I think he thought I was just playing along. Little did he know... ;) So yeah, those're my stories.

    150. They sell ponies where I work, and everyday i go through the pony aisle as its a quick way to the back of the store, but ive never actually bought one. tempted to, but i dont know how my cowerkers would react.

Yes, Wilkinson sells them. I am going to suck it up and buy one after school tomorrow. The only thing is, it will seem weird for someone my age to be seen in school uniform buying a pony from Wilkinson. Oh well, I'm Prepared with the gift excuse...

    152. I buy pony stuff all the time. I am a proud 31yr old Brony. I am also in the Call of Duty MLP Clan!

Only time I hide it a little is at school, because it is for mechanics.

I have told people about the show numerous times. Even to a tech support guy I was talking to about my Nexus 7!
