@Nickel Gunner If you look closely, as one said before me, the first time Twilight shows the book... the mare was a 'Earth Pony', while the second time an 'Alicorn'. Possible animation error there, but which one... Maybe we will never know.
Before posting I have to thank all the staff, studio, writers, voice actors, song writers, etc. for bringing another enjoyable episode to life.
I can now see since this was a CMC episode, the Mane 6 won't be main players and only cause plot problems.
But I still feel a bit sad they didn't break up Cherilee and Big Mac until after they were married. Could've had a why don't you ponies give it a try first before quitting moment. Even have Princess Celestica say they made a cute couple and have Big Mac and Cherilee blush and have AJ and Granny cry at the wedding.
It also would have been nice if at the end Big Mac pulled out that diamond he bought and told Cherilee he couldn't think of any pony better to give it to and have Cherilee kiss him and close with a little heart and hooves shape. *sigh* That would have been a nice cute ending. But that would also have justified the girls' interference. Of course that also might be their cutie marks, match makers.
It REALLY flew over my head at first as to why this makes so much sense.
Applebloom is a member of the Apple family. Big Macintosh is an apple farmer. Big Apple is New York. Macintosh is the Apple Macintosh, classic flagship computer. Cherilee is a teacher.
@Khimaira They didn't do that because of limited time and because it would have undercut the "message." The message was to not meddle in others' love affairs. If Mac and Cheerilee had gotten together, that would have defeated the message.
00:45- Jaws 02:35 to 02:45 -Music from M. Night Shyamalan's Signs 03:49- Disco Stu 04:04- Me Gusta 08:30 to 08:57 - Music from Disney's Fantasia The Sorcerer's Apprentice 17:07- Pepe Le Pew Hop, though Pinkie Pie doing it in Griffon The Brush Off had the hop and music
Also noticed that Carrot Top/Golden Harvest had herself a man during the song.
@Nova25Yup, I had noticed. I thought the second one was more likely to be the right one; We get a much closer look at the book than the first time.
Also... Equestria celebrates a holiday that came to be because of a mind-twisting love poison that destroyed an entire kingdom?
Now I want to learn more about this. That, and how much truth is behind Nightmare Moon's history as a cannibal spirit (as seen during Nightmare Night).
Well, Valetine's Day is named for a man who was beaten, stoned and beheaded for trying to convert the Emperor of Rome. A love potion is small potatoes in comparison.
@WoodencoyoteI was focussing more on the "dragon invasion destroying a kingdom" aspect. That's not exactly small potatoes. Don't you want to read more about that?
I saw a little bit of the leak.... was watching it with the little girl I take care of during the day until we had to go inside. Looking forward to sitting down tonight and actually watching the whole thing.
Due to product, demand, and monopolizing it's not like farmers ain't wealthy. You are also talking about the same society that can harvest rocks. Gems can be found EVERYWHERE and can be dug up mere feet underground. And we're talking about entire caches.
Diamonds and gemstones aren't hard to come by, it's just that the dragons and diamond dogs are hoarding the vast majority of them.
Apple, Hay and Carrot are some of the main AND base products of the alimentation of those ponies... plus minor holes for other vegetables and dairy products.
The Apple family seem to be the main(if not only?) productor of apples in their country... and since ponies are about 99% vegetarian, and so they will not exploit the other half(meat and stuff. And before someone tries to be ''smart'', those pigs are for their 'natural fertilizer', ok.)... the focus (and kinda monopole) on some of those products(like apples) makes for a lot of money toward the different branches of the Apple Family.
But, the fact that they aren't millionaires, kinda proves that apple farming on a large scale is still pretty costly (equipments, employees, seasons' limit, etc...), and that a lot of money is surely re-invested into the farm.
---
Also, yeah... Gems aren't 'that' hard to find, with the right spell (and if D.Dogs and dragons don't live nearby)... Plus growing gems in rock farms (Aggregation of mineral dust and magical imbued world ; theory).
Shayzorr said... This episode stretched the limits on how big eyes a filly can have. Just look at the CMC when they are hiding in the bush. ****** My theory is that unlike human eyes (approximately spherical), the Equine Sapiens Hasbro eyes are nearly flat, like fresnel lenses. This allows room in the skull for brains.
To those who wonder how Big Mac could afford a diamond, keep in mind that gems are fairly common in Equestria, such that Rarity thinks nothing of using them to basically Bedazzle her dresses. That makes the price go way down.
Since it's 623 comments and counting, it's doubtful that anypony working on the show will read this far. But! I'm going to say stuff anyway.
You know the shot where the Cutie Mark Crusaders are waiting in the bushes for Cheerilee and Mac to hook up? Do you remember their faces? That was my face during the ENTIRE episode. I giggled like a filly through the whole thing. This was one of the best. The acting was superb (Cheerilee screaming "SHMOOPY!" is Emmy-worthy, let me tell you), the song was fantastic and adorable. The background music was particularly strong. The writing, the set pieces, the wonderful art... I can't love this enough! Bravo I say, and bravo again.
One of the reasons diamonds are so expensive in our world is monopolization. The prices we are used to is mainly artificial, caused by shady business practices. With diamonds being a good bit easier to find and the world being generally less shady, it's easy to imagine diamonds being fairly affordable.
Plus, it's not like Big Macintosh is being sane. He might be spending money that the Apples have, but that they also need to save. Recent episodes have implied that stuff like Zap Apple Jam and Cider Season cause great influxes of cash that get the Apples through the income-less times.

I have to say: the first ten minutes of this episode scared me more than Cupcakes read by Sean Hannity.
ReplyDeleteThe love poison twist provided some nice catharsis to the horrifyingly saccharine and surreal.
Screw up Sweetie Belle! If you do something right, I won't love you as much!
How do apple farmers have enough money to buy diamonds? At last, more evidence that Equestria is socialist!
Hurray for Vietnam-era pit traps!
Nopony can force two ponies to be together? Tell that to arranged marriages!
And nothing teaches misbehaving kids to act properly better than psychological torture! Thanks Cheerilee and Big Mac!

Cherilee is a teacher.
Macintosh for Cheerilee.
Apple for Teacher.
Oh gosh, is this silly.
I didn't really enjoy this ep, but then again I don't really like the CMC, so all that screen time to them detracted from it for me.
ReplyDeleteBut besides that, did anyone else think that one of the jewels looked like it was based off of the Elements of Harmony?
Finally, they cause trouble wherever they go and now they have removed color from things. Therefore CMC == Discord
Another one from the pack, doesn't stand out from the rest, but gets the job done.

Maybe he offered the farm as collateral? People have done stupider things for love.
