So I just wachted this after returning home from all day trip of shooting(M-16s are fun) and the entire time I was hoping for amazing episode. Now originally I was expecting the falcon because Ragles are overused, owl already is owned, bat was odd. I know this is still a kids show with morals and lessons but, kick to my head. So with my wild idea(which was posted in the thing about the episode yesterday) about it being a wolf. So only going to say to fellow bros and sis's, if you ever chat with a developer, writer or even Luaren herself. PLEASE put my Wolf into an episode. Not letting it be a monster or evil would be great. Thanks for reading.
I personally wasn't too crazy about this ep. They kept talking during the song which kinda ruined it for me. And the winner was predictable of course, as soon as Fluttershy suggested him, I knew somehow he would be set up to win. I think part of it too though is that RD is one of my least favorite characters. I used to say Rarity, but she has grown on me a bit because she is so annoying she can be good for comic relief.
The show's AWESOMe. No doubt. New songs, more references , animation became more nicer (although there are some mistakes on duck scene), more exploitable clips for remixes.
I almost lost it when Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" started playing, and I did when Dash started whistling along to it. There was so much about that episode that was great, but that was the highlight. The duet between Dash and Fluttershy was also a nice, unexpected surprise.
I was a bit bummed that Dash didn't go with the falcon, but she was such a bitch to the tortoise that you knew she would pick him instead and that would be the lesson of the episode.
Did anyone notice, that at the end, when Rainbow Dash talks about how the winner would be 'whoever crossed the line with her' that Pinkie Pie jumps around and says "That's right, HE said that'?
Pinkie just referred to Rainbow Dash as a male. Play it over and check it. It's for real. Accident? Or are they trying to play up Rainbow's stone cold butch lesbian aspect here?
I played that bit over 20+ times. That's what Pinkie says. 'He'.
Interesting. Very interesting.
Maybe Rainbow is a trannie pony. That could be 20% more awesome than even being stone butch.
She says "she", it's just her accent + the fact that most English speaking people cut sounds out of words when they say them. e.g. The way Brits say "t" sounds.
@Giniko I think I recognize the name and avatar, you wrote Unicorn Jelly and Heliotrope, right? Any pony art or fics from you yet? (We briefly talked a few years back. Thanks for the advice you gave me at the time. I build robots for NASA now.)
So that song was... not so great. Wasn't feeling it at all.
The episode on the other hand was freaking amazing. I think with the last three episodes, they've gotten back into top form. Let's just hope we don't ever see another Lesson Zero...
Oh no... I was really hoping it wouldnt be a tortoise. Dash would have been better off with the Hawk. And that song omg, way too long and sounded kind of like it was a stage musical o..o I miss pinkie Pies short and funny songs.
That song was so ridiculously great, I can't get over it. Daniel Ingram has gotten so good. It's up there with the best songs from Nightmare Before Christmas for me.
Little sad the bat didn't win. His echolocation with doing stuff was pretty cool. Too bad it wasn't radical. Also the fact he had the Doctor Whoof mane was pretty funny.
@Luna-tic Scientist The intended audience is elementary-school-aged children (primarily girls), and to a lesser extent their parents, but keep in mind the animators are also in it to entertain themselves.
Need to save links to a few comments in this thread, as exhibits the next time someone says that Dinky/Derpy fans go too far in bending the show's canon to fit their fanon.
Watched the episode again, just noticed that in the photo sequence with Dash and the pets that she and the eagle were curling. CURLING. Talk about Canadian as fuck.
And falconer Dash. I just flipped my shit. Awesomeness overload.
I have to be honest; I thought this episode was... nice. The song was very good, if not quite up to the standards of the best of season 1, and it was good to see Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy in the spotlight; still, I didn't think the story had as much humor, excitement, or heart as the other episodes this season. I enjoyed it, though, and I'm sure I'll revisit it from time to time. Highlights and random observations:
During the pegasi duet, how were Fluttershy's animals sitting/roosting on the clouds?
Funniest moment: the camera "hopping" in anticipation of Tank's hop during the agility test, then having to track back just in time to see Tank faceplant.
Needs to be commemorated in fanart: Rainbow Dash & the owl in sweaters.
Loved the bat escaping through the quarry eel's nostril during the Ghastly Gorge race.
As a few others have mentioned, the sheer variety of critters highlighted during the episode was fun to watch, and the bat playing the glass harp was awesome; plus, the episode ended on a high note, with the Tank-copter. Not a bad episode by any means, just kinda lackluster compared to the rest of the season.
A new episode, and the first* one starring Rainbow Dash at that! First, my good points:
Holy crap, did they go all out animating Dash flying this episode!
I don't care if that was a dream; Owloyisous (can't spell that at all) just became 20% cooler.
It's nice to see all of the pets in one spot for once (obvious exception for Philomena of course).
Hooray for new song! Although maybe only average among MLP songs, that still puts it far above 95% of what's considered popular music, at least in my opinion.
I'm likeing the little details they put in here, such as when the hummingbird drops out of the air when it stops flapping.
I loved when the bat played the theme on wine glasses. Just one of those sounds I really like.
Ride of the Valkyries? That tears it: this episode has the best soundtrack (as a whole) of any episode so far (possibly tying with The Show Stoppers)!
Wow, they actually broke Dash's wing. Didn't think they'd actually do that on screen. At least the turtle, er, tortoise has her back.
And the not as good:
It was pretty obvious that Dash was going to choose the turt- tortoise eventually after the second focused shot on him. On the bright side, didn't the fandom agree that a turtle/tortoise would've been an awesome pet for her, like, several months ago?
Rainbow Dash was pretty much a jerk throughout the entire pet competition, especially during the race, but it's completely in character for her in those situations.
The Crazy:
RAINBOW FLAMES!!!
The shades are back!
During the photoshoot, Dash looks cute in a sweater/vest. Also, curling is not what I think of when I think of style.
Pinkie Pie doesn't need binoculars to see long distances. Because Pinkie Pie.
"Yay?"
Overall, I enjoyed this episode at least as much as Luna Eclipsed, possibly as much as Lesson Zero. Definately a high point for the season so far.
*She co-starred in Fall Weather Friends, so unless there's a season 1 episode with more Dash than that which I'm forgetting...
Okay. This is pretty good, and.. that song with Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy.. it really felt more like a musical than ever.. and makes me kind of wish we'd get a full musical sequence.. like a special, or movie or something.
Cons: Too predictable (who didn't know the tortoise was going to end up being Dash's pet the moment it was introduced?) Dragged too much on the quality evaluation scenes.
Pros: I liked the music and songs, Ingram shows us what he does with his time right here. Rainbow Dash being her pompous self, and gets bitten in the ass for it (this last part was essential to the success of this episode).
>Shadowbolt costume >Ancient Greek-inspired Gala dress >sports coach >classy schoolgirl >accessories: black shades, flight goggles, striped scarf, ball cap >most of the time, buck naked
There you have it, ladies and gentlemen — Rainbow Dash always dresses in style!
The episode was good, but I didn't like how it ended. It was obvious the turtle was going to be Dash's pet, I have no issues with that. But they pretty much cheated for the turtle at the end. The turtle didn't make the cut, RD even told the turtle this. So even though the turtle finished with RD, it doesn't count as the turtle was not a contestant anymore. They even moved the finish line closer to the turtle, more cheating. This bugs me because it pretty much cheats the other finalists out of their hard work and effort....totally unfair.
I also didn't like the turtle's helicopter gizmo, the turtle should just ride on RD's back.
Anyhow, my favorite animal was the Bat. The Hypno-Butterfly was pretty cool too!
Loved the funny jokes in this episode. Totally missed Derpy until I read it here....they're getting really sneaky with her! =)
Oh yeah, I also liked how they had reoccurring animals. The buzzard in the background, the humming bird contestant was Hummingway from the Phoenix episode in season 1.
Excuse me, but am I the only one to notice the 19:52 Pinkie's exclamation that is... somewhat odd when it comes to the gender of the pronoun used when relating to Rainbow Dash..? (I mean, I haven't been following the flow of comments here, so it may have already been brought up.)
Awesome song, but then again MLP is the only show where you can assume a song is awesome until proven otherwise.
But has anyone sensed that the episodes after Luna's re-appearance are a bit...weak? I mean, they're good, but they're certainly not on the level that the first few episodes were and WAY off the level from season one.
I dunno. That's just what I'm feeeling ATM. Not that I'll stop watching or anything, fuck no.
Another Awesome episode. -Freaky dream -Never thought of Fluttershy's house being both a vets and a pet store/shelter -Dash/Fluttershy duet -The contest somebody needs to write a fic about the League of Would-be Pets -butterfly has guts -the wasp and the bat are certainly talented -Coray eels why do I have a feeling one of the staff is a Metal Slug fan. -Dash hums Wagner -Dundunduun! -Baron Awesome won, but Tank was the better sport There's always next time Baron. -HeliTank on the move.
Where's Derpy: last week she was a filly now she's in a chicken coop. Where/What will she be next week? Stay tuned.
Anyone else find it ironic that MLP is aired after the new Strawberry Shortcake, a show that's practically everything Lauren didn't want MLP to be. It's like MLP is a reward for sitting through it every week just to watch new pony. Though this week's eps. didn't seem as bad as past views.
Speed, agility, guts, style, coolness, awesomeness, radicalness are all fine qualities to have in a pet. The bulk of the episode is Dash's insistence on finding, and the contestants' efforts at showing those competitive qualities, but ultimately that's not the point, and that's the friendship lesson she learns.
That the tortoise would win was predictable, but it was a mystery just how he'd do it.
"Find a Pet" is not the most memorable or catchy song, but it is a fun song, and it's not plot-interrupting filler either.
It should be clear by now to anypony that Derpy is being dropped into every episode like a silly Easter egg, for fun and as a nod to the fans, but that's all. There's no more significance to it. Don't hold out hope that a third-tier background pony will one day become a featured character in an episode. That's what fan-works are for.
In west Cloudsdale, born and raised On the playcloud was where I spent most of my days Chillin' out, maxin' relaxin' all cool Just shootin' some b-ball outside of the school When a couple of colts Who were up to no good Started making trouble in my neeeiighborhood I got in one little race and my mom got scare She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air'
I find myself saying this this every week now, but this is the best episode of season two so far.
First of all there was a SONG! And what a song! It was perfect, and will be hard to beat. Libman and Ball work very well together. After the song I had a big goofy grin on my face for the rest of the episode and the whole day, nothing can get me down.
As soon as I saw the Tortoise I knew it would be Dash's pet. Dash can be a bit of a jerk (her major character flaw) so it is nice to see her learn an important life lesson. Tank is perfect for Dash, the Element of Loyalty gets the pet with the most tenacity, a loyal trait.
"i need a "SD" version so i can play it on my PS3"
Wait, Wut???
Why? I download the HD version FOR my PS3, and then in a week or however long it takes for the clean rip to come out, I download the clean version and put it (in HD) on my PS3.
If you are talking about people making stupid MKV files or junk like that, then just use a youtube ripper. I always use Clipnabber. If you dig around their page you'll spot something like Clipnabber classic or something, which is a web based ripper I prefer to rip Bags159SC youtube vids... but he's late this week... Stupid Skyrim...
Now, while I still have hours left in the day. I gotta run to GameStop to grab my copy of Zelda Skywad Sword and then weep into my PS3 controller as i play Skyrim, cause I lent my Wii to my mother, and I'm also wasting all my free time on Skyrim.
I do recall Gilda sitting on a cloud next to Dashie.
I'll bet that Equestrian magic/physics makes it possible for most winged creatures to do as such. With such small wings, I think it's been implied that at the very least pegasi rely on magic to fly. If the world of Equestria is inherently infused with whatever force ponies refer to as "magic", then other creatures my be able to innately tap it as well.
Unicorn focus it into intricate and detailed comanded functions with their horns.
Pegasi and winged creatures focus it through their wings (primarily), and thought their hooves, claws, talons, or feet (secondary), allowing flight and manipulation/contact with clouds.
Earth ponies focus it primarily through their hooves... and given their proclivity toward baking and inventing functional flying machines or fine dexterous manipulation using their tails... I'd say maybe their mouths and tails as well.
Regarding the tails... We've seen AJ and Zecora use their tails for certain. Maybe for earth ponies and zebras, this is a means of magical focus they use more because they rely on it more, not having other ways to interact with the environment, outside of their hooves.
Also, I'm now 99% convinced that Princess Celestia herself enchanted Tank's Heli-beanie. The yellow magic is characteristically hers, and she'd be one to be able to pack that much power into such a tiny rotor.
Pinkie makes flying machine that requires 4 hooves to pedal. Celestia makes one that looks like it was made of the bobbin of a sewing machine...
Watch out Apple! Princess of miniaturization coming through! I think we found your new CEO!
I laughed my ass off during the home movies segment. Steve ends up coming in last in a derby racer shaped like a pony. It was light blue, with a rainbow colored seat, and it's mane and tail were kinda magenta/purplish, kinda like scootaloo... though I think the racer was a unicorn.
I couldn't help but laugh at that color combination on a pony shaped derby racer... I had to laugh at that!

Also... The moment RD first pops up from the rubble after the avalanche and tries to escape the rock, only to find herself trapped is @ 16:24. From that time to to the very moment Tank and RD touch the finish line @ 18:31 is exactly 127 seconds.
As soon as I saw the episode I KNEW that the random would have an outcry for setting us up. Swetie Bell, Applebloom, then (pause for dramatic effect) NO Scootaloo. (Celestia troll here). Made up for it with the legit song though.
Bags159SC just uploaded the clean rips of not only the last episode, but the one before. He admitted that Skyrim was a fault for delaying the upload of "The Cutie Pox"
Both videos are 720p, the highest available resolution that is free of all watermarks, logos, ratings, or advertisements.

I guess all there is left to do is come up with a pet for Luna.
I'm thinking some sort of amorphous blob creature like a living shadow that can shape shift. It would explain her cloak that turned into a swarm of bats.
It's hard to comment on this episode. Not that there's anything really wrong with it, but there isn't really anything to get enthusiastic over. I found it very predictable, especially given the way that damn tortoise was being pushed on us. Okay, okay! She's going to end up with the damn tortoise! We get it! You don't have to show us over and over.
IF YOU SUFFER FROM DEPRESSION, I am 30 years old and have been on Wellbutrin for the past two years for depression and ADD and let me tell you the pills have WORKED. I am a new man, and I wish I'd known about them when I was 18 because then maybe I could have enjoyed my 20's. LFMF

ReplyDeleteDERPY HOOVES IS IN THE CHICKEN COOP HOUSE WHEN THEY FINISH THE SONG!!!! LOL!!!!
ReplyDeleteOkay it was the May the bet pet win post, also if any of you know WhiteDiamonds, tell her the Wolf idea came to me.
ReplyDeleteAlright, I see it this way,
ReplyDeleteRainbow Dash's main trait is Loyalty
The Falcon's loyalty was something as of Twilight's traits, meaning that if it knows the advantage it has, then it will keep trying til it does.
The Turtle's loyalty was stubborn, more like Rainbow Dash's Traits.
So in fair game the Turtle is more like Rainbow Dash
FINALLY a season 2 song!
ReplyDeletePony music artists you know what to do! I expect at least 3 remixes of that song by next week!
The show's AWESOMe. No doubt.
ReplyDeleteNew songs, more references , animation became more nicer (although there are some mistakes on duck scene), more exploitable clips for remixes.
The season's is going better and better.

ReplyDeleteAAAWWWWW YYYEEAAAAHHHHHH Steampunk tortoise FTW

ReplyDeleteGAAAAH FLUTTERSHY! YOU ARE KILLLING ME!!!! XD

ReplyDelete>RAINBOW FLAMES!!!
Don't forget TRON Lightcycle Rainbow Dash!
>The shades are back!
In west Cloudsdale, born and raised
On the playcloud was where I spent most of my days
Chillin' out, maxin' relaxin' all cool
Just shootin' some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of colts
Who were up to no good
Started making trouble in my neeeiighborhood
I got in one little race and my mom got scare
She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air'
I find myself saying this this every week now, but this is the best episode of season two so far.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all there was a SONG!

ReplyDelete"i need a "SD" version so i can play it on my PS3"
I'm an ADICT!!! WAHHHHHH!!! :D

ReplyDeleteI do recall Gilda sitting on a cloud next to Dashie.
@mkb
ReplyDelete"I think I recognize the name and avatar, you wrote Unicorn Jelly and Heliotrope, right? Any pony art or fics from you yet?"
I write as Chatoyance on Fimfiction.net
I have six stories now, with assorted illustrations.
The song was so great and unexpected.
ReplyDeleteMy friends parents have a pet tortoise, its over 20 years old and that little thing can really book it across the room.
I did love the bat though. I want one like that! Oh, right, a bat..
Did anyone watch "American Dad" tonight?
ReplyDeleteI laughed my ass off during the home movies segment.

Time to memorize the song and sing it in public!
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I saw the episode I KNEW that the random would have an outcry for setting us up. Swetie Bell, Applebloom, then (pause for dramatic effect) NO Scootaloo. (Celestia troll here). Made up for it with the legit song though.

ReplyDeleteBags159SC just uploaded the clean rips of not only the last episode, but the one before. He admitted that Skyrim was a fault for delaying the upload of "The Cutie Pox"
Both videos are 720p, the highest available resolution that is free of all watermarks, logos, ratings, or advertisements.

Enjoy!
I guess all there is left to do is come up with a pet for Luna.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking some sort of amorphous blob creature like a living shadow that can shape shift. It would explain her cloak that turned into a swarm of bats.
More pegasus duets, please =)
ReplyDeleteAwesome episode!
ReplyDeleteIn other news, make a pause at about 8:54... when you see it, you'll shit lols!
ReplyDelete@Roxor
ReplyDeleteHaha show for 12 year old girls dude...take a chill pill
IF YOU SUFFER FROM DEPRESSION, I am 30 years old and have been on Wellbutrin for the past two years for depression and ADD and let me tell you the pills have WORKED. I am a new man, and I wish I'd known about them when I was 18 because then maybe I could have enjoyed my 20's. LFMF
ReplyDelete*Mods, I know this is a copy/paste from what I said in the RD thread but I felt compelled to repost it where others might see it. I guess you can imagine why.
The references to bullets and tanks harken back to the long-extinct race of bipeds that previously inhabited the world.
ReplyDeleteTesting...
ReplyDelete@Gryffinz
ReplyDeleteI second this sentiment. Why? Because FlutterDash is awesome. XD
Uhhh guys. The 480p one has vanished because Hasbro claimed against it. D: iScared
