Story: Equestria War Z: An Oral History of Zombie Pony War (Update Part 5!)

[Grimdark-War] [Crossover]

Author: CoffeeGrunt
Description: Theatrics call it the Howling Hunger. The religious, the Rapture. The politicians and bureaucrats of the United Equestrian Democracy simply call it "Equestria War Z." My name is Quill Stroke, and I write these stories with the permission of the ponies that tell them. Without the pony element of this long and horrific war, I believe history will simply call it another natural disaster, allowing the tragedies and massacres that occurred to reoccur.

I was wondering when this crossover was going to happen.

I am very interested in this.

Now I never expected this.
Bloody hell, how much more grimdark of a topic could you get than world zombie pony massacre?

Mixing two of the things I love the most in the world? So bucking reading it.

FamusJamus said...

@Skybreaker There was one here already. Can't remember the name, but it had Pinkie and Applejack exiling themselves in a dragon's cave.

V said...

@FamusJamus I think Skybreaker's specifically refering to "World War Z". This story is a crossover with a specific zombie book.

Boy, we've really gotten a sudden influx of Zombie Ponies lately, haven't we? First "Cantering Death" then "Somepony Who Loves You" and now this...

Curttehmurt said...

@Dusty the Royal Janitor

Zombie Ponies were inevitable after that bit in Bridal Gossip

I am also eager to read this, although I'm busy at the moment

Whoooooo a world war z crossover. This is just must read. Not for those who don't do grimdark though

Dusty the Royal Janitor said...

@Curttehmurt

Yeah, but it's odd that they're only coming around now, you know? You'd think we'd have seen a lot more of them a lot sooner...

PhallenFoenix said...

@Dusty the Royal Janitor
Lets not forget Cough. Read between the lines, that's a zombie apocalypse fic too.

FamusJamus said...

@V I know what he was talking about and the fic I mentioned was a World War Z crossover. It had the same format (i.e. interviews digging into the history of the outbreak), and specifically mentioned Solanum.

It came from a worm in one of Pinkie's Baked Bads. :P

Now EVERYPONY's doing zombies. I thought I was original a few months ago when I decided to start a fic about zombie ponies. :|

Fuggit, I decided just now that I'm not gonna get left behind in all of this. Expect my fic soon.
(Havent read this fic yet, so I can't judge it. Just wanted to whine a bit)

Someone on my Speech and Debate team is doing this book for their OI piece. It's all over the place!

Awesome! I knew this would soon happen!

Can't wait to read!

CoffeeGrunt it a great author, so I'm expecting this to be great as well!

What frightens me is someone managed to weld the two settings together this well.

I thought I was creative. Then I see the fics that are scattered around here.

Wow what a coincidence, for the past week or two I've been working on a summer reading project for school where my class had to adapt the book we read into a childrens book. I read World War Z so I've been writing and illustrating "My Little Zombie: World War Z for Kids" as my project, with ponies as all the characters.

I will reluctantly save this for later...

I'll be in the basement sharpening my bill-hook till then.

HAHA That book was absolutely brilliant. I'll have to read this sometime.

Some ponies are forgetting about the zombie fic way back in the April Foals contest.

Yup, this is what I have so far:

That's just a low res screenshot of it in Photoshop, and the pages aren't in order. I'll probably put the whole thing on Deviant Art when I'm done though. I know it's not that great but it's just for an English class project.

Pinkamena Diane Pie said...

Who needs English when you have Art?

Pinkamena Diane Pie said...

I fear for the fate of Fluttershy and Applejack. Zecora's an evil enchantress, so she'll be fine.
But Fluttershy's cottage is right on the border of Everfree, and Sweet Apple Acres is just next door (after you get past all the acres of trees).

A.J. Scriber said...

@Pinkamena Diane Pie

Well, Cantering Death does have elements of 28 Days later in in - I refer to the zombies as "infected," and the infected tend to fit the criteria of the lumbering antagonists of that film in particular.

FamusJamus said...

@Pinkamena Diane Pie I'm actually really interested in Fluttershy's fate. In the original, animals are really sensitive to the virus so they give it a wide berth. This was sometimes used as an early-warning system and, even though Fluttershy wouldn't know what was about to happen, she'd know something big was spooking them.

Add to that her ability to fly (not well, but enough to hop onto roofs at least), and I'd say her chances of surviving the initial encounters are pretty good. Just so long as she didn't investigate any dead animals and zombie pegasi didn't suddenly learn to fly themselves.

(Hmm, my spellcheck didn't seem to recognise "pegasus" or "pegasi". Weird.)

Pinkamena Diane Pie said...

That's because all spellchecks think the only correct way to spell 'pegasus' is 'Pegasus'. And pegasi was never a word till recently, and isn't listed in any form of authentic reference or dictionary.

Dash's testimony said they attacked in the middle of the night without warning. She's terrified of the dark, and she has all sorts of doors for small animals to go through. If any of them are infected, there's a whole army right there in her cottage waiting to be turned. Even if she manages to avoid getting attacked and get to the upstairs, she only has that one window that's just big enough for maybe a filly to fly through or for her to crawl through.

But if this happens after ground zero, she could be holed-up with Twilight for some ignominious reason.

FamusJamus said...

I guess that makes sense, 'Pegasus' would refer to the single creature, rather than the made-up species. Good thing there's an "Add Word" function. XD

I suppose it depends on which way the author decides to take the nature of the virus. In the original, it was simply toxic to animals and could only turn/reanimate humans after 24 hours(ish). Animals tended to go silent or flee if any infected were nearby, to the extent that the words 'sixth sense' were used to describe their awareness of it.

Angel could probably fit into that version quite nicely. And the author has already shown that reanimation doesn't happen instantly (the guards didn't turn until after the reporter died).

But who knows? Fluttershy could've been with Twilight like you said, or even somewhere else completely.

Pinkamena Diane Pie said...

Fluttershy's natural response to danger is usually to run. Literally. Wings? What are those?

FamusJamus said...

Heh, good point. It's either that, or diving into the nearest bush. XD

ponygrad said...

What was the photo on her desk of? Who was the filly?

mycutiemarkisagun said...

SMH @ feeling guilt over any zombie kill. This Twilight could teach LilPip a thing or two about emotional masochism.

Kippershy said...

I've not even started reading, but I'd like to say my favourite professional author is Max Brooks, which WWZ is my favourite of his two [that I know of].

So... I'm looking forward to reading this!

Kippershy said...

read both chapters. pretty good.
shame that there's only two chapters, since following a MB WWZ format should in theory give plenty of template material.

will check up on this occasionally to check it out :)

Battle of Yonkers time! ^_^

Cameron Strathdee said...

Hey Coffeegrunt,

You can write, I'll give you that much. And you can do it well too. But you can't write Yonkers. There just isn't enough involvement, enough of a sense of "OH FUCK OH SHIT WE'RE SO SCREWED" and shit hitting the fan. You gave a good assessment of Yonkers, and you did a passable ponification, but you lack Max Brook's touch.

This would be a good story if it wasn't just repeating everything that was in the original book. What's next, the celebrity safe house with Hoity Toity and Photo Finish?

Please come up with something new.

There's a difference between a crossover and just rewriting the original book with ponies.

CoffeeGrunt said...

Yeh, true. In hoesnty, this is only a throwaway side project.

I mean, seriously mate, you're probably the only person in the fandom that actually reads this. xD
