Lil'pip needs the bloddy mess perk, or high luck, not sure which one it is (i have luck 9...heck i'm level 24 in regular FO all all my stats are 9 or 10, bobble heads and 7 levels of intense training help, as well as some custom perks, one adds to str and end but reduced all my combat skills by 25, another droped sneak 10 but rose char by 2)

The ''ghost'' people (or cloud zombies, as I called them because I had forgotten their exact name) could be killed by shooting their head (usually resulting in destroying it).

It was the easiest and THE most economical way to deal with them.

A couple of 'Cosmic knife' to the head, and they would :
      1) Have the head pops.
      2) Die, then you kick their head some more, while they are on the ground, and it pops

      ReplyDelete
    3. @Nova25

Regardless of what you thought you knew, just shooting them in the head without destroying it won't kill them outright. Any limb will do and it's only the easiest way if you're a good aim or you use VATS. Heads only tend to explode on critical hits or if you have the bloody mess perk.

In any case, the point's moot: this isn't Dead Money, this is Fallout: Equestria, and it has been demonstrated many times that FoE is significantly more awesome. For example, when was the last time you saw a deathclaw with an energy weapon? It's not a mistake that Canterlot Ghouls are tougher than Ghost People, it's just another case of FoE being more hardcore than the non-pony version.

    6. I have a feeling Pip is going to have a revelation like the Prince does near the end of The Sands of Time. Go to this link:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V53HCzr9hd4&feature=related

And watch from 6.48. Pay close attention to the monologue in the in-game cutscene in particular between 6.48 - 7.05

"...but though I'd fight until the desert sands themselves were red with blood... I could not bring back the dead."

It is worth noting that the Prince *does* bring back the dead, but his anguish and memories are not undone. That said, the Prince went on to make the same foolish mistakes on Warrior Within before finally taking responsibility for his errors in Two Thrones. Pip here does not have the luxury of spazzing up time, nor does she have the option of rushing back and forth making hasty corrections to her mistakes. Everything she does is permanent, so she is forced to mature faster than the Prince himself, but that doesn't mean she isn't going to have a similar moment as the one I highlighted in the link above.

On a semi-related note: I wonder if Kkat ever played the Prince of Persia trilogy on PS2...

    7. You're bringing the Dunwich building , or at least your own horrifying version of it, into this aren't you? Oh, how ironic that situation would be, the book one could destroy in that building, if one bought the right dlc; is now going to be where they recover that awful black book. I went into that horrible building twice while playing the game, once to get the bobblehead and then again when I got the dlc and retrieved that book. Is there going to be a new messed up version of that statue thing too. If there is, why do I feel like it'll end up being Luna and Celestia melted into some horrible structure along with the possibility other random ponies that happened to be near them. Maybe some will even still be alive in that horrible thing.

Also, ponies were melted into walls and sidewalks and whatever, any chance they're going to be 'alive' but permanently trapped within whatever they fused with. Maybe they'll work as some kind of alert system to more mobile Canterlot ghouls. Maybe they'll scream in a way that sounds as if it's emanating from hell. Such, a brilliant approach this would be in my opinion. I might be going insane..Ha.Ha Ha Ha He Ha He...yes very possible.

It was Chapter 6, I believe, of that other FO:E that involves Blackjack. Believe you helped with that one Kkat, if I remember the last line correctly. Those fillies and colts have driven me almost over the edge. I have no idea what that's supposed to represent from the FO games, maybe nothing. Maybe you guys just thought up a place that's just as, possibly more, messed up than the Dunwich Building. I can't stop twitching, I'm sure it'll fade and I'll regain some of my sanity. I don't believe I've been fully sane for a long time though.

    8. I was reading through the comments and literally slapped myself in the face for not pinning Canterlot as the Dead Money DLC.

This was the sentence I just said out loud: "Well no shit it's Dead Money, Steelhooves is a fucking Ghost"

These ponies, they drive me to sound insane.

      ReplyDelete
    9. Well I got the dead money DLC because of this fic.
That was $7 very well spent.

Also... Do I sense a grand galloping gala coming up?

    10. The story is AWESOME!
But i call bullshit on one thing: not understanding the culture of the zebras and their fear of stars. Why? Zecora!
It seems like Z went away (sent by Pinky rather) somewhere in the middle of the war. Until that time ANYpony could just ask why the whole fuss is about or atleast ask her to find a peaceful way to end the conflict.

I wonder how the conversation went:
"Okay. First of all, we should ask Zecora WHY are they attacking us like this."

"Who? Zecora? Naaaw! I dont think she knows anything. She is just a highly spiritual zebra who knows shitloads about zebra customs and legends. Its not like she is some sort of a secret agent or diplomat or something."

    11. @Anonymous
      That's...huh.
Kkat, would you care to grace us with a press release? Even if it's just "sorry, can't talk about that: spoilers"?

    12. Will we ever be getting a map of the area of the Equestrian Wasteland covered in FoE?

      ReplyDelete
    13. Hey Kkat, do you read any of the side stories fanfics, and if not, why?

      ReplyDelete
    14. @Anonymous
Well, one would have to start with a decent map of Equestria, first.
I might give it a shot.

    15. Kkat, question:

Do you have a glossary or such on hand for the various terms and whatnot for what was what in basic fallout to pony translation?

      Vaults = Stables
      Pipboy = Pipbuck
      Potions = Stimpacks

That sorta thing? I'm only asking because I've got these fragments of a story in my head that I'm trying to work out. Whether it becomes a workable story or not, at least I'll have entertained it enough so I can focus on other things.

All of this was of course, spurred on in my head by my questions about the Princesses before. I may be my own worst enemy sometimes.

      ReplyDelete
    16. @Anonymous

Zecora was asked. And they made what they could of her answers.

The ponies understood the zebra's mythology, but they did not comprehend the impact that had on their cultural psyche.

Imaging understanding chocolate because you've read every definition of chocolate you could find in books, studied how chocolate is made, and even interviewed people who have actually eaten this substance called chocolate.

They didn't really get it. But they tried to "understand" it, at least to an extent. They even hid out in bushes wearing safari hats and watching the zebras with binoculars (metaphorically speaking). Midnight Shower was an example of that.

But remember that the religious aspect of this war didn't occur until roughly midway through. By the time the war became a holy war, the ponies had already been at war for about a decade. A lot of pony blood had been shed. And remember that the change in the war happened just after the Massacre at Little Horn. That was something that Equestria was neither able to heal from nor forgive. Plus, it took a while for the depth of the change to register. It was only the attempted assassination of Celestia that opened the eyes of a few, Luna included, that there was something more at play than they understood.

By they time they even began asking the right questions, the ponies had already crossed the point of no return. Equestria had the fallen soldiers who must not have died in vain, its own "day that will live in infamy", and even war heroes in whose name the soldiers were fighting.

They weren't going to turn back no matter what somepony sang while dressed up in fishnets (metaphorically speaking).

"You know what? Just forget it. I don't need to know if this is real or not. I don't need to understand it. I don't even care."

It was Twilight Sparkle vs Pinkie Pie Sense on a massive scale.

A few cared. Princess Luna cared. But even if they had truly understood, what could they have done? The ponies of Equestria believed they could no more surrender than the zebras could.

The only real difference between the two was that the zebras wouldn't stop because of what they would lose if they did, and the ponies wouldn't stop because of what they had lost already.

No, I do not. There are some that I really look forward to reading though. ^.^

I am not going to read any of the side stories until I am done writing FOE itself. There are a number of reasons for this. I don't want the side stories altering or impacting my plans for the story itself. I don't want to consciously or subconsciously steal ideas from them. If something I write in a future chapter ends up making something in a side story against FOE canon, I don't want to know that I have done that, much less be worrying about doing that while I write.

And, perhaps most of all, I don't want to get confused -- there is a lot to keep track of in Fallout: Equestria. I don't want to have too stop and say "wait, did I write that or was that something I'm remembering from Side Story X?"

      ReplyDelete
    18. @Culmen

You should've gotten it when it was on sale on steam a few days ago for like $4. Also get Old World Blues as it continues the overreaching DLC story arc and is easily the best Fallout DLC of all time.

    19. Kkat, you have managed to make something called the Pink Cloud terrifying. Hats off to you.

      ReplyDelete
    20. So I finally got talked into reading this, and while I'm not through it yet (not even close) I must admit that each new chapter urges me to read it as though it were a Party-Time Mint-al.

I haven't read any of the other comments due to spoilers, but I'm just going to put this here out in the opening so I can reference it later. I'm only a dozen chapters in, but I'm calling it now: Lilpip's virtue is magic. I am basing my guess on the fact that unicorns who's special talent is magic are good at all sorts of different things, just like the pipbuck. Also, friendship is magic, and without having friends growing up, it explains why she never got her cutie-mark until late.

I'll come back later to see if I was right or not.

      ReplyDelete
    21. @Kkat
wait a sec if you never read side story's how did/Why did Project Horizons get the Khat Approved tag?

      ReplyDelete
    22. @tyler

I approved that the story be moved to its own page rather than be kept with the other side stories. I did this largely because of the story's size -- it has outgrown its place on the Side Stories pages and deserves a page of its own.

But also, I have read other stories by Somber and deeply enjoyed them. So while I wouldn't expect Project Horizons to necessarily be canon, I can only image it has to be amazing. It is one of the Side Stories I am looking forwards to reading most.

      ReplyDelete
    24. Well, looks like I've finally got time for my really late review.

It's really amazing just how dangerous even somewhat weak enemies can be. Not to say bloodwings are weak (though they seem about as fragile as Dash's wings in other fics), but with how quickly they killed those zebras, and how close that one was to killing Calamity, it's somewhat humbling. Never mind them attacking SteelHooves though, he doesn't count for gauging enemy strength anymore heh (I'll admit though, I was a little worried about him getting knocked off the Sky Bandit, but the characters not being as worried about it helped me worry less).
Velvet and Pyrelight's reactions to the bloodwings were just as appropriate as they were somewhat scary.
I have to agree with JeremyRush, I did get the WoW vibe from Xenith's manoevers and well, it looks badass in my head. I think every chapter she's been in so far has made me love Xenith more, and I seriously would give her a giant comforting hug if I could (minor issues like the resulting death and her 'not being real' aside). I'm seriously going to miss her next chapter, though I know she has to stay behind and in all honesty it means she's 'probably' a lot safer than any of the rest of the team will be.

I can imagine Velvet's shield spell in the rain looking something like Atlantis' shield under the barrage of Wraith fire during one of the season finales of "Stargate: Atlantis" - and it makes quite the beautiful mental image.

I don't think I ever felt as bad for the Chinese in Fallout 3 or Caesar's Legion in New Vegas as I do for the zebra... All of these zebra need hugs badly.

The interactions when they meet back up with SteelHooves were fantastic, especially "Are we on a date?" Well maybe I shouldn't say 'fantastic' because of SteelHooves' history, but it was nicely written. The call-backs you make to earlier chapters (SteelHooves' 'Alicorn Hunter' title in this case) are always a nice touch too.

Midnight Shower... still a little up in the air about him, actually I kinda don't like him at all, but that's okay.

Not so "dry" of a dry run for Canterlot, but frankly, Canterlot seriously terrifies me now, not that it didn't already, but it does more.
That broadcaster... I'm certain the ones in the actually game aren't quite that bad (and you certainly paint a wonderful portrait of its terrors Kkat), but all the same it makes me glad I don't have any of the DLC for New Vegas.

When the zebra leader was first mentioned as being the caesar (I believe, or some term in those lines), I figured it would just be left at that - however, I really love the parallel you've drawn between the zebra and the romans (with the aqueduct, the amphitheater and the baths). It makes them more than just being "Fo:E's Chinese/Legion" to me anyways, it gives them something more of a sense of culture. Well or it could just be I'm a sucker for Roman architecture (which I am), and already loving them;but now I love them even more (and really want to restart NV so I can side with the Legion...)

      ReplyDelete
    25. Part 2:

"In all the f*cking wasteland, they were my greatest enemy." Even as terrifying as this situation quickly turned, this line was just so... right. And then pink cloud, and cue terror. Not just terror, there's a definite sense of desperation you bring across that just works so well.

"Lovely choice. If we wish to avoid the poisoned water, what better place than a bath house?" Have I mentioned how much I love Xenith?
And poor Calamity, not smart enough to not fall through a roof when he has wings.

The backstory on Luna was very interesting - not my favorite interpretation of the FiM backstory but it fits in well with the world you've created so I don't have any complaints about it.
I do love the connection between Littlepip and Nightmare Moon, that's more than fantastic, and so completely fits.

Poison is never good, and that is quite possibly 200 year old poison, that makes it even worse...

Xenith screaming made me tear up reading through this again.

Adding to the list of things that are never good: Alicorns saying "Gotcha!" Though that is a pretty effective and horrifying tactic. And another broadcaster, well that's just unfair.

SteelHooves stepping into the hoofprints where he died, that whole scene, and the parts of his history in the journal entries were so moving. I want to give him a hug too.

The three Alicorns talking to each other was chilling in a way, though I have to admit I agree with them. I just see zebras as being striped ponies, different only in the way pegasus are different from unicorns. And well, Littlepip shooting them with the BEL was just fun.
      That dream though... most interesting.

Ah and the prophesy, chilling to the freakin bone.

Definitely a well crafted escape scene, with great contributions by SteelHooves and Calamity, oh that Calamity. He is totally insane, and so very lovable. I'm worried about lasting damage with him from the cloud though, since not only did he have prolonged exposure to it, but wasn't treated very quickly.

Yeah, I've never used so few chems in a Fallout game! Though part of that is because I can get the same effect by slipping on my Naughty Nightwear, and since Speech was one of my priorities I've never even been 20 points behind the curve.
Then I hit level 30, put one last point in Speech, and now I could sell bottled water to lakelurks.

Naughty Nightware + Eulogy's Hat (1char and some barter)
      or Burtons Wig (10 speach)

Even with 100 speach the naughty is nice with the +1 luck by by level 24 all my SPEcIAL are 9 so i sold it to Robert.

    36. Just wanted to say Kkat -- love the new chapter. Don't listen to a word of what any of those tailholes ripping at it say. The motivation of the Zebra's feels entirely believeable -- it really fits the Cold War air of paranoia that the Pre-War Fallout world is all about.

      ReplyDelete
    37. @Kkat

Ah ok. I just thought that the moment Luna was put in charge it became a holy war and could have turned very differently had she stepped down.

    39. @Gozer the Equestrian

Ugh, I feel your pain. I recently started a new playthough of Fallout 3 (going for a perfect character) and I can't take any chems. Ever. I don't know whats wrong with me. I blame Kkat's story telling skills. Now it's impossible for me to take chems because it makes me think that Dogmeat and Fawkes are crying on the inside. God dammit.

      ReplyDelete
    40. @JeremyRush

Ironicy thanks to some mods i have i'm taking more chems and alcahol now (i use to never use them jsut because they wern't worth it) but now that i can get perks for using lots of chems, alcahol...

Course i also have a mod that let's me have all 8 companions at once, and there is another mod that let's you play NV and Capital wastland with the same character....

If i ever get all the DLC and NV with all those mods combined i can go back to vault 101 while fighting Ghosts in Dead Money while having a team of 5 companions and my own Balefire puppy :P

Humm i wonder if i can have Dogmeat and Robo rex?

    41. "ZOMG I CAN NEVER TAKE DRUGS NOW KKAT!"

      And in the game! :P

Seriously, this is good. Don't do drugs, they're really that bad for you. (and arguably worse, but RL drugs are kinda really off-topic)

    42. Hey FO:E fans. over on KYM we have made a page about popular background ponies and popular OCs. We have been asked to add littlepip and would like all of you to give us a good description for her. Here is a link to the page so you can get an idea of what we are asking for.

      ReplyDelete
    43. @supermonday

      Sounds fun!

So I'll toss it to the fans: what you you bronies think would be a good description for Littlepip?

I'll pick one (or perhaps a few parts from several) to be our Littlepip description on KYM.

      ReplyDelete
    44. Honestly? I would keep LittlePip off of KYM as that seems like it would appear kinda egotistical of you to have her up there. That and the fact that with the rampant OC hate the fandumb has, you would likely end up with a lot of targeted backlash in response.

      ReplyDelete
    45. @Anonymous 6:00,

Nyx is up there on the fan pony page. While I like Nyx I think Little Pip is a much more fleshed out and honestly better character. That said Nyx has far more of a memetic presence with the vast quantities of fanart that has sprung up and dances around the drawfriends all the time.

On the topic of drugs in Fallout, while I can never use Party Time Mentats anymore my Fallout 3: Wanderer's Edition character is pretty much always using drugs. The mod adds a lot of them and they are really useful. By the end of the assault on the purifier my Lone Wanderer was on Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Morphine, Buffout, Psycho, Rad-X, and Mentats (just the regular kind). Suited up in T-51b and with a couple ranks in the cyborg perk I'd say he barely qualified as human anymore. He probably bled rainbows. In a game drugs really have no real downside, if you get addicted you can cure it for 50 caps. This story has really made me think about it though, Pip doesn't even trust herself when it comes to PTMs any more. She has Velvet search her bags just in case. Much more realistic in my opinion. Poor Little Pip, she has to go through so much hardship. I hope it's all worth it in the end.

      ReplyDelete
    46. I'm one of the editors of the page.

Nyx is added because we had a person who was familiar with the character.

For Little Pip, on the other hand, we don't have a decent summary. But based on her popularity we would love to add her. That's why I asked supermonday to find something, since he has more experience with OC's. Which then brought us to the point of him asking for a good description.

So I'll ask again: What would be a good description for Little Pip? The link was already provided so you can see what we're looking for.

    47. @Anonymous

I agree that this seems like a fun idea. And from looking at the web site, it looks like you are more interested in a description of Littlepip's characterization than a physical description -- something I wholly support.

I'm tossing this to the bronies here to come up with the way they, as readers, would describe Littlepip's character. From that, I'll choose or piece together a description for you.

(Was there a deadline on this?)

Thank you for the offer. ^.^

There is no deadline. Thank you for offering to help.
You all heard Kkat, get to describing littlepip.

    49. @supermonday

If you have a day or two, the best way to come up with a description of littlepip is to read the story yourself. That said, I understand if you don't have that sort of time.

As such, I wish to propose the following description of LittlePip:
'In a shattered world filed with slavers, raiders, and bandits, Littlepip is a small unicorn with a large reputation. With a cutie mark of a device as common as a cutie mark and a single magic trick in her arsenal, she makes for an unlikely hero. However, even in this post-apocalyptic version of Equestria, Littlepip and her friends show that even a little pony can make a big change to the world.'

    50. Well, on request of both our friends at Know Your Meme and writer extraordinaire Kkat I decided to chip in and give a little description of Littlepip. It's another video, so apologies if a video shamed your clan's honor or something.

It's only 10 minutes and it was made at like 3 AM, with little to no preparation, so it's not the most in depth or coherent thing I ever said, but nevertheless every little addition helps. (And honestly, it could be completely different from what Kkat and KYM are looking for, so hopefully I'm near the intended mark)

Video can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYcQnCRk3hk

    51. Same editor here.
      Better tell this as well:

For a kind of description we're looking for simple stuff. Like "This is Little Pip, her character is like X, she appears in Story Y (which takes place in world Z), where she plays the role of Q". And maybe some part about her appearance in fan-art and such.

These descriptions still need to be from an objective point of view. So don't push yourself too far.

      Chapter 23.

"Inside were two objects, one of which I had seen before, recently, through binoculars: an anti-machine rifle. Only this one was pristine, with golden, flame-styled filigree, a custom bit, deep citrines embedded in the barrel and an embossed nameplate that read “Spitfire’s Thunder”. It was also broken down to fit in the safe. Some assembly required."

    55. Also if everything goes according to plan I'm thinking the "what happens to everyone at the end of the story" Fallout 3 + NV style ending thing will go a bit like.
      ***************POSSIBLE SPOILERS IDK?**********
Velvet and Calamity settledown and have fouls Xenith and her daughter go off and live with other zebras SteelHooves he goes and keeps control of the outcasts (Unless...) pyrelight lives with velvet and calamity homage and littlepip stay together but littlepip still wanders the wastes doing good. something like that who knows.

    56. Here's my attempt~ n.n

      Littlepip

Littlepip is the protagonist in the fan fiction "Fallout Equestria" in which she is is forced out of her Stable (The fan fiction's equivalent to Fallout's Vaults) and then takes on the quest to make the wasteland a better place.

Littlepip is good natured and wants to help. She is curious to the point where it becomes unhealthy. But underneath the image of a Wasteland Heroine lies a fragile, self-conscious and uncertain pony, who often struggles with many internal battles regarding a wide array of different issues including sexuality, addictions and virtues.

Littlepip is the only one of the main characters that have not been given a physical description, which was done to imitate the Fallout games, where the player is free to costomize the character they play as.
The fan fiction caused artists to start making fan art of the characters. The first fan art that was drawn of Littlepip (by slushy) did it's best to obscure the view so that she would still maintain her "blank slate".
But soon after, a fan artist (john joseco) drew her with a gray coat with a hint of blue, brown eyes and an orange short mane. Since then, most other fan artists has latched on to that image and thus Litlepip appears as such in most of the fan art.

That said, when you're a sneaky, lightly-armored sniper and you get bushwhacked by four BoS paladins who don't like what you've been saying to the Elder, you don't have much choice.
I took a cocktail of Psycho + Slasher + Med-X + Rebound + Turbo, and I still just barely survived by noticing the gatling laser had less HP than the guy carrying it...

And didn't get addicted, either. Huh.

      ReplyDelete
    58. I'll take a swing at the description.

Littlepip is the hero of the fanfic "Fallout: Equestria". Smart, good-natured, and inquisitive to a fault, her biggest enemies are not mutant monsters and ponies who have embraced the cruelty of the Equestrian Wasteland. Rather, her most harrowing battles are against addiction and the darkening of her own soul.

    59. Anon: August 10, 2011 8:31 PM here again. Still avoiding spoilers, but I hit chapter 21 and I was compelled to write down my new predictions and prophecies.

I'm not quite buying the whole "we're not who you're looking for," line, though I admit my confidence is now shaken, but not stirred.

Thats not was I came here to write about though. For a while now, I've been getting the suspicion that Twilight Sparkle was still around, maybe even still alive. I couldn't quite put my finger on where I was getting that idea though. Was I picking up on foreshadowing? Was it the way she was portrayed (or not portrayed) in memories?

When I read about how you could upload a pony's mind into one of the crusader mainframes, I thought that perhaps thats what became of Twilight Sparkle, but after meeting spike... His ominous warning about Twilight's true heart has brought me to a horrifying prediction. Twilight Sparkle is the "Goddess," that the winged unicorns are a part of. Perhaps having lived to witness the destruction, the pain and regret in her heart transformed her into a wicked mare of darkness. Or maybe it was just taint from the Splendid Valley.

Anyway, now that my prediction is out in public, I cant weasel out of it when I find out what really happened.

    65. Equestria's equivalent of the Wanderer from Fallout 3, LittlePip is a smart (and witty) tech pony of one of the secure underground shelters known as Stables, sealed refuges that protect the inhabitants from the dangers and horrors of the charred wasteland on the outside, until LittlePip goes on a wild goose chase for another of the escaped inhabitants, and is left to her own devices to survive and thrive in an unforgiving world.

She's a determined mare, a quick study, exceedingly curious and investigative, with a penchant for colorful expletives and an attraction to other mares, plus an enormous heart that is more than willing to fight for the greater good of the Wasteland.

In the story, she manages to establish herself at the head of a heterogeneous group of wasteland heroes, bent on bringing the light of hope to a devastated Equestria while discovering the true values of friendship.

During her journey, LittlePip, together with her team, will be facing all sorts of dangers, including terrifying monsters and pernicious environment hazards, not to forget her own fear of shortcomings or inadequacy, which will often bring her to both exceptionally heroic acts and weighed, dangerous decisions.

    82. Strangely, I feel sympathy to Red Eye`s Unity. It seems that ponykind follows some kind of Marks` formations theory.
Tribalism to slavery to feudalism to capitalism. Society making progress step by step
Yes, ponies deserves better "regime". But "better" means "better than". And Unity is better than tribalism and chaos of wasteland.
Eventually next step will be made, and on a basis of Unity will be builded something better.
It's dialectics. Negation of negation with forward motion. Ponies must see bad sides of "raiderism" chaos to build it's negation - Unity. And they must see bad sides of Utity dictatorship to build... something better.
Surely, building capitalism at the first place would be best, but it seems to be this is too big leap for the ponykind.

    84. For the KYM piece, I think it might be appropriate to have a blurb about the whole party, not just LittlePip (although she would have the focus). As LittlePip herself has pointed out several times, it just doesn't seem fair to single her out in the group, especially since a lot of the characterization is in the dynamics between different team members. Nyx gets her own section because she's a standalone character, but I think LittlePip's entourage is sort of a package; it's hard to talk about one without mentioning the others (and for precedent, Lyra and BonBon have a single entry). What do you guys think?

Well, it's like I said a while back... his goals are laudable, but any society based on his organization contains the basic, unspoken lesson that you can and should enslave and exploit when times get tough.
Suppose your house burned down and you had to build a new one. It might seem tempting to slap something together just to get some shelter, but any structure based on that frame will be wobbly and fragile. If you put in the effort to start with a solid foundation and sound walls, the final product will be sturdy and robust.
It's tempting to accept Red Eye's methods just to climb out of the abyss this society finds itself in, but if we have to rebuild society from the ground up anyway, I say let's do it right this time.

      ReplyDelete
    88. @Kree
I think you made a small error in that the prophecy in the cell was written mere days before the end, and the Zebra plans had clearly been set in motion already by then. Imagine how long it would have taken to construct the bunker under Four Stars! The decision to "blow up the board" must have been made months ahead of time.
That's not to say the prophecy was necessarily new or unique, but we don't have any evidence that it was quoting Revelations (so to speak).

    89. Anon: August 12, 2011 9:56 AM here again. So I was wrong about Twilight Sparkle. Close, but not quite... though I suppose there is still a chance Twilight is in there somewhere.

Finished reading the last chapter, phew, what an emotional roller coaster. Chapter 34 hit me like a ton of bricks, but the part that stuck with me even after Lilpip's ordeal was Calamity's mistake.

Lilpip had all sorts of soul searching to do about what she did, and I can empathize, who hasn't done things they regret? (Someone with no morals whatsoever?) But I knew things were going to go bad the moment they went for the water talismans, and you know why? Calamity, after all his talk about having no tolerance for raiders, became one himself right then and there.

And he still hasn't faced that fact. Thats going to eat at me, maybe even until the story is finished.

What you say is true, LotW, it would take a very long time to put into action all the plans that lead to the apocalypse, but you missed something. The Stables also took more than a few days time to research, design, purchase land, build, and select people to fill them. The Stables existed as a last hope to save ponykind if everything else failed. Nothing the zebras did was set in place because they had decided to "blow up the board" when they started those projects. Those projects were part of the zebra's option of last resort, something they hoped they would never have to use. They set them up well in advance knowing that if they did have to be used, they would need to be ready to go at a moment's notice. Even then, Pinkie Pie came very close to stopping at least one of the bombs. The zebras did not underestimate their opponents in the slightest.

    93. Excuse me please, Kkat, but might I have a moment of your time? You may recall some comments made earlier on the design of the missiles the Zebras used against Equestria. Well, I now have produced a document detailing what seems to me and two friends of mine to be a very good design. This document also includes a brief history of the missile's development, or rather my idea of the missile's development. I now type this comment because, when I submitted this somewhat unusual document (it is not at all surprising that there is here no prebuilt submission path for fan missile programs) to Equestria Daily, I was informed by Sethisto that this thing would require your approval to be displayed on this great website. It is for this that I now ask, if it would not trouble you. Thank you for your time here, and of course that you very much indeed for your great work.

    94. @ Endor

The problem with that theory is, they aren't exactly building something from scratch. That is, they aren't working towards a future with no precedent of civilization. Tribalism moves to slavery because they don't comprehend the idea of a more benign unity.

However, the Wasteland has precedent - Equestria once was a prosperous, peaceful nation, and so if everyone worked together they could strive for that template and make something better. It's only because everyone is pulling in different directions that nothing is working - Enclave is sitting on their cloud, Steel Rangers are hording technology. No one with the power to benifit the world is respecting 'noblesse oblige' and that's why Red Eye is resorting to slavery. He doesn't want to inspire others and do things the right way, he just wants to fix Equestria by any means necessarily.

      Laudable intentions, incorrigible methodology.

    95. @Saint Dane
      I'll double check.
did you put them in your main tf folder?

      ReplyDelete
    96. @Var

People don't participate in slavery because they don't know a better way, they do it because its an easier way to get things done, and then they twist themselves into philosophical knots to convince themselves that its the right thing to do so they can sleep at night.

Red Eye isn't fixing the ills of the wasteland, he's codifying them into the law and into the culture. While in the wasteland, cruelty is sort of an emergent behavior brought about by the necessities of the environment, but in Red Eye's unified world, they are set by precedent.

Never conflate uniformity with unity. Never confuse unity with harmony. Never mistake participation for cooperation.

Ain't no dictator ever gave up power without being forced. Laudable intentions, incorrigible methodology, ultimately doomed to defeat itself in the long run.

      ReplyDelete
    97. @Var

Well Red eyes has his eyes set on becoming Celestia.

Did he not announce the current form of slavery as something that would end? hmm I will read the entire thing again.

Why he has not done that yet lies further down the tale than we have gotten.

Makes me wonder why THE GREAT AND POWERFULL TRIXIE is staying where she is and not moving about.

      ReplyDelete
    98. Regardless of whether or not Red Eye intends to end slavery after his plan is complete, it doesn't really matter. Either everypony gets absorbed into the horror gestalt, or those entrenched in positions of power will likely refuse to accept such a dismissal, leading to war once again.

Well i don't know. Did not read all of it, but the pictures and text don't sound/like very pony/zebra like. The design looks like it could be from any other game.

When you asked first i actually expected some kind of hand-drawn blueprint with some witty small details like "balefire-egg-compartment", "navigation-crystal", ...

Imo your version just doesn't sound/look equestrian.

    109. @Anonymous
I think I'd take more inspiration from the V-1 than this does. Pulsejets are much easier to invent than a full turbojet, as is a rocket. The supersonic design seems a little weird for a group that doesn't even have reliable aircraft yet, and anyway, that kind of speed is prohibitively expensive for a cruise missile. High subsonic would be good enough.
I'd imagined the zebras using short-to-intermediate-range ballistic missile, but that's just me.
What's with that name, by the way? It doesn't sound very... er, zebrish.

PS - I personally think Equestria is a flat world.

      ReplyDelete
    110. @LordOfTheWrongs

well i assume you think this way because Celestia raises the sun? and even i think the world as it is in season 1 is fairly flat but i am hoping to be proven wrong. Round worlds are so much more fun.

      ReplyDelete
    111. Zebras seem to be running a Roman motif, so I'd suspect some kind of name like Pilum for the missile.

As for the design. If its an air breather, I would bet they use a design similar to the nuclear ramjet (see project pluto) where they have something similar to a balefire egg, or one that is slowly leaking, that superheats the air as it passes through the engine. It might even be the warhead and the engine are one in the same.

If its not an air breather, a basic liquid fuel rocket is really one of the simplest designs and likely what they would have used.

If Equestria is flat, that pretty much rules out ICBMs as we know them. (Read Missile Gap by Charles Stross for a neat flat world/cold war story)

      ReplyDelete
    112. Here is my take on the zebra missile, or at least the short range ones that were fired on Canterlot. Its a pretty simple ramjet design that regulates the thrust coming out of a ring of exhaust ports to control attitude.

      ReplyDelete
    113. @DCTH:
I did use a lot of real-world things, but unfortunately we know so little about the physics of Equestria.

      @LordOfTheWrongs:
I think the Zebras probably had a bit of an advantage from their possession of alchemically produced materials. The problem is that, Kkat's deliberate vagueness aside, we do have some information that suggests that the missiles are very fast. How fast isn't certain, since we know neither the travel time nor the distance traveled, but I thought that Mach 4.5-5 seemed about right. As for ballistic missiles, yes, those would have been easier for the Zebras to use, but I thought that they'd probably think that ICBMs flew too high. As for the name, "shizi", once the tonemarks are put back in, is Mandarin for "lion", and "cordis", according to Google Translate, is Latin for "heart". It's a bit of an elaborate joke/reference: one of my main influences was the Regulus Program, and given the position of Regulus…also, I'm not very good at thinking of names for things.

Interesting ideas…I don't think that combining the engine and warhead would be a good idea, but perhaps some sort of NTJ-analogue might work. I didn't know if the Zebras had the technology, though, so I played it safe. As for the rocket idea, I think that's quite good; dispensing with the intake would also dispense with a lot of hassle, and high-energy-density alchemically produced fuels and oxidizers could give still give the missile the range needed.
ICBMs as we know them, but ballistic arcs ought to still work; some design could be found, I expect.

      @icekatze:
Where does it say that the ones used on Canterlot were short-range?
Your design is pretty neat, but I think it could do with some fins and wings to take some of the burden off of the thrust vectoring (though, on the other hand, the erratic flightpath caused by constant corrections and counter-corrections would be good against AA…but it would also make it difficult to hit the target, and Equestria doesn't appear to have had much AA to speak of that could intercept things moving so quickly). What sort of guidance and control systems are you using?

      ReplyDelete
    114. The fact that I read this LONG before playing Dead Money somehow made that DLC several magnitudes more terrifying. To be suddenly trapped in the inspiration for Canterlot and the Pink Cloud is chilling, to a degree I can't say I've felt before.

    115. I don't disagree with the idea that the main cast are not Elements. I think there's more to being an Element than embodying the virtue. It also requres a purity of heart that is rare in the wasteland. An Element can't do awful things and continue to be an element, and I'm not sure they could even if they repent later. Pip's party are not the Elements. They're Heroes. Different job description.

I agree with LotWrongs's comment about Redeyes being wrong in that his methods teach that virtue is only good when it's easy -- and that's the same as having no virtue at all. If it's fine to act like a raider when times are tough, that's just being a raider.

In fact, there's really a fine line between that and Villain Of The Piece. The difference is in what you do. Redeyes does awful things with the excuse of the greater good. VotP does good things that they know wil be misunderstood, at last in the short term.

    116. On the topic of the Heroes being or not being the Elements of Harmony: I think its kind of like that scene in the Matrix where Neo finds out that he's not "The One," from the oracle.

To paraphrase Twilight Sparkle: "It just means you have to choose to believe in yourself, and sometimes it takes a friend to show you the way."

      ReplyDelete
    117. @Anonymous
I agree that I could see it going that way -- you're not the elements of harmony right now but you have the potential to become them -- but that's kinda what I'm saying; I think they're too much affected by the Wasteland to be true Elements. Ponies like Derpy or Homage have been in the wasteland, but never really let it get inside them. Pip's been through too much, I think, to be a true Element, and the others are very much similar. I can't see an Element of Harmony who once murdered another pony for revenge, sort of thing.

Basically, yes. How could Celestia raise the sun if it's already noon somewhere else? It also feels more, I dunno, "fairy tale"-ish than a geocentric planet.

      @Anonymous
That is an AWESOME idea! A deliberately "flawed" warhead used for propulsion also opens up some interesting stories, like shot-down missiles that are still venting radiation and fire as the megaspell slowly escapes.

      @Anonymous
I'm of the opinion that the native zebra language is Swahili. That was what Zecora's gibberish song was intended to be, but they didn't have anyone who knew Swahili.
There are a couple of handy online dictionaries. To get you started, "mtakaso" means "purification" or "cleansing".

    119. @ Anon 12:08
I don't think there was anything that said the non-megaspell missiles that hit Canterlot were short ranged, but it didn't seem very plausible to me that ICBMs would be tipped with conventional warheads. Also, once you get going fast enough, wings are more of a liability anyway. As for guidance and controls, I figured either a spell matrix or in a pinch they could cut a guidance cam.

      @ LordOfTheWrongs
I figure that the first time Celestia raised the sun, she also pulled it closer. (I even made a little comic about it.) Also, the planet could have been tide locked, and if so, the noon time zone would have been an unbearable desert. Or it could have a wobbly rotation so that the myth was really more about them stabilizing the night and day.

      ReplyDelete
    120. @icekatze

Alternativly it's a round world but it doesn't spin, or is more like the moon, Celestia and Luna control the sun and moon so the planet isn't baked on one size and frozen on the other, maybe a side effect of this is that is why ponies manage the weather and seasons.s It's a dead world and they The princesses movements are what gives the world night, day and gravity

      ReplyDelete
    121. @NekoLLX
Thats exactly what tide lock is. The reason celestial bodies like the Moon (to the Earth) or Pluto and Charon (to each other) always have one side facing the other is because no object is 100% perfectly spherical, and because gravity distorts the objects shape causing drag.
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tidal_locking

      @Nopony in particular
I had a moment of fridge logic just now. All the talk about the malevolence of the stars might help explain the importance of Princess Luna's former task of raising the moon to begin the night. I mean, you could have a night without the moon, so why the big deal? Perhaps it is because the moon helps block out the stars influence.

    122. sss@LordOfTheWrongs (about the language):
Yes, but there's also obviously a Roman influence on both culture and language, and "Yao Guai" is Chinese. Somber had the good, I think, idea that all of these languages are correct, and that the Zebras are composed of many different tribes/subnations with Latin being the predominant language but others still being used extensively.
      @icekatze:
Yes, but wings are still useful/needed at the Shizicordis II's cruise speed, I think. Wouldn't a spell matrix rely on gems? A big advantage the preprogrammed electromechanical inertial system has is that it can be made without Equestrian materials. Also, where does it say that the missiles that were targeted at Canterlot had conventional warheads?

None of them were megaspells, like the missiles which hit Cloudsdayle or Fillydelphia, but they would have been devastating all the same had they struck home... But the missile strikes were just part of the zebra’s ploy. The megaspell was already in the city."

That implies the presence of a large body that Equestria would be tidally locked TO. Are you suggesting that when Nightmare Moon made it permanently night, it was permanently day elsewhere? Doesn't make sense.

      @Anonymous
The Romanesque architecture is more like the Zebra interpretation of Equestrian styles, or possibly one heavily influenced by pegasus culture (see Cloudsdale). If you recall Pip's vision of the meteor shower, the zebra houses look like Zecora's hut.

      @Anonymous
The splash from those missiles was enough to kill any unarmored people near the shield. I'd think something more like a V-2 warhead.

I wanted to make her fan-art appearance part shorter, but her unknown design kinda forced me to make it this long.

I want to thank the people who took their time to create an explanation, you guys were a great help.

      Any opinions?

Also I read the comment about adding all the characters. With Littlepip as the main protagonist, it makes sence that she is added. But the other characters as well would be a little much. Nor am I familiar with the cast. If they develop enough they might be added in the future.

      @ LordOfTheWrongs
Usually a star counts as a large body.

Equestria could have a Pangea-esque super continent on one side and nothing but ocean on the other, and thus having permanent day over an empty ocean isn't very useful to anypony. That would also explain the necessity pegasi made weather, because large portions of the continent would be desert otherwise.

Another option includes having Equestria's moon actually be larger than Equestria itself, but have Equestria situated at the Lunar/Solar L1 point. Once Luna and Celestia were gone, they could no longer keep Equestria from leaving the semi-stable L1 orbit.

      Or its just magic. :)

I really don't like the bit about her being able to shut off her emotions. She doesn't. She's grown accustomed to killing like any soldier will, but no moreso than Calamity or Steelhooves. Heck, even Velvet's starting to get there by now.

      ReplyDelete
    133. Yeah she kills others plenty but she always has plenty of feeling about it. From time to time that feeling is blind unthinking rage but its still a feeling. She does feel little remorse after killing most raiders and such but raiders are such psychotic lunatics that they're little better than rage zombies. Its not hard to take the Calamity stance with them.

      ReplyDelete
    134. @Anonymous Yeah, I disapprove of the emotion shut-off thing too. Emotions and thoughts play a large part in her actions at all times, in fact we have even seen her falter in her combat routine because she was thinking about Corrupted Kindness while fighting a group of raiders (!) in chapter 34 (!!).

And I don't get why such a large part of the description is devoted to her fanon appearance. There should be more room for what's actually 'canon' there, like more of her personality.

Largely very nice. However, the statement that she can "shut off her emotions" is very incorrect.

Allow me to suggest the following description instead:

Littlepip is good natured, driven by curiosity and a need to help. She sees evil in the world and she instinctively wants to fix it. She values life; and in a lawless, shattered world filled with slavers, raiders, and monsters, this has compelled her to become judge, jury and executioner of those who prey on the innocent and helpless.

Littlepip is a small unicorn dwarfed by her growing reputation. Underneath the image of a Wasteland Heroine lies a fragile, self-conscious and uncertain pony. With an uninspiring cutie mark and a single magic trick in her arsenal, she makes for an unlikely hero.

In the story, she manages to establish herself at the head of a heterogeneous group of wasteland heroes, bent on bringing the light of hope to a devastated Equestria while discovering the true values of friendship.

Littlepip is never given a physical description in the story, imitating the Fallout games where the player is free to customize their character. However, as artists began to create images of the characters, the image of Littlepip in an artwork by John Joseco soon became the template for her appearance (as seen in the image above).

Anon @9:02am yesterday, as LordoftheWrongs said, the Roman motif is not the zebra standard; it's an Equestrian style. While Canterlot itself uses an architectural design reminiscent of standard storybook fantasy castles (similar to Castle Neuschwanstein) blended with elements of multiple societies including what I think are Greco-Roman and middle eastern influences, exclusively Greco-Roman architecture is seen in the show only in Cloudsdale. The standard for zebra architecture is most likely similar to Pip's dream; similar to Zecora's home in other words.

      @Anonymous

Anon @12:08pm yesterday, I personally don't have a problem with your name for the missile. If you wanted a name that sounds like it would fit the zebra culture, I think you should look to the languages of the jungle and savanna regions of Africa. The translator program at Language Resource Online says that the words 'lion' and 'heart' translate to Swahili as 'simba' and 'moyo'. I don't know anything about Swahili though, so I can't say if the meaning holds if you run the words together nor if they have a separate word for 'heart' when not talking about the organ. The word for 'spirit' is apparently 'roho', but again, I'm not sure what definition(s) of spirit that applies to. This is one of those instances where you need at minimum a proper translation dictionary since a good one will usually include several possible words depending on your meaning. You can then look up the various unfamiliar words and see what words they translate back to in order to get a context for the meanings. It's not perfect and can still run afoul of idiomatic differences. The ideal would be to consult someone fluent in both English and the chosen language, but such people can be difficult to come by.

      @Anonymous

Anon @9:13pm yesterday, as I mentioned above, the Latin influences appear to be a feature of Equestria, and more specifically of Cloudsdale. Similarly, zebra lands may or may not include territories loosely similar to Asian cultures, and until the origin of the term "Yao Guai" is given in Fallout: Equestria, it is equally likely that it came from some other as yet unnamed society of sentient ungulates - antelopes, deer, gazelles, or yaks perhaps, or there's the Asian wild ass and the kiang if you want to stick with more equine forms.

    145. @Escher

I do not know whether Pip or any of the others traveling with her are ultimately going to become Elements of Harmony, but I think you may have made an error in writing them off entirely. You say they can't be because of how much they've done even though you believe somepony like Homage can be. What you forget is that while Homage has a comparatively sedate life now, she used to be a wanderer back when she was still with Jokeblue. We don't know much about that time, but we do know one thing first heard from her own lips in Chapter 6: “This is DJ Pon3, and that was Sweetie Belle, singing about that one great truth of the wasteland: every pony has done something they regret." That includes Homage, and I think it's safe to say that we aren't talking about a trivial regret. Being an Element of Harmony isn't about being perfect or unstained nor is it about holding blindly to a virtue like a life preserver. Applejack lied (very poorly) to Pinkie Pie in A Party of One, remember? Being an Element of Harmony is about how you view the people around you (especially your friends) and the Element is merely an expression of where you strive never to cross a line and where you will go out of your way to make things right if you ever do.

      @No one in particular:

Concerning the question of the shape of the planet, Kkat pointed out that in episode 23, The Cutie Mark Chronicles, there appears to be a globe in the classroom where Twilight took her exam. I'm not sure how to reconcile a spherical world with Celestia and Luna clearly having control of the movement of those bodies over Equestria. Thoughts?

      ReplyDelete
    146. I suspect that the reason why Celestia and Luna couldn't just rotate the planet instead of moving the sun and the moon is related to why it is so much harder for lilpip to levitate herself, even though she can move things that are a lot heavier than she is.

      ReplyDelete
    147. @Kree
What about a geocentric system with nothing particularly important on the far side of the planet? Someone mentioned that earlier. Make the sun run off of magic instead of fusion (or maybe magical fusion) so that you can make it smaller. You don't even have to use crystal spheres or the like for the stars; just suspend the Ponyworld system in space.

      ReplyDelete
    148. How about they just don't really move the sun and moon after all. The way Calamity described it, the sun and moon are acting normally on their own. I always thought it was more of a symbolic act rather then a real one.

      ReplyDelete
    149. @Arcane Scroll
No, Calamity was describing the way it is now. It was different back in the old days...according to the history Pip and Velvet learned, anyway...which, actually, was in a Stable, so...now I'm wondering if Kkat's up to something.

      ReplyDelete
    150. @Anonymous
Well, the whole "Princesses are Gods" thing has been slowly chipped apart through out the chapters. It has been shown that the vaults were designed for social experimentation and aren't even consistent of history. I think Littlepip and Velvet are starting to realize that the Princesses aren't all they believed.

      ReplyDelete
    151. @Kree

I suspect that, rather than creating the sun and the moon and dictating their progression that instead Celestia and Luna managed their progression and kept things neat and orderly. With them gone, the natural and less predictable cycles have returned. Weather's gone wild. So how could they stop the sun and the moon?

      Magic. :P

      ReplyDelete
    152. @Kree
Even as a wanderer with Jokeblue, Homage never got used to killing. She said she's done it, always in defense of somepony's life. I'm not sure even Velvet can say that.

Anyway, I didn't mean Homage is innocent, or that she has no regrets. Honestly I'm not entirely sure what I mean. I'm trying to put words to something in my head that I can't explain very well.

Pip and co. just seem too steeped in what the wasteland is. Homage would never have visions of herself becoming a raider or go on a rampage that turns a whole town dark. Maybe I am writing them off too quickly, but I take Spike at his word -- they aren't the elements.

Like I said before. They have a different job description. They're heroes. It's not the same thing.

On the globe thing: Eh. The globe is an animator populating the background with common schoolroom items. It's not meant to be a statement on the geography of Equestria.

I can't see how the "raise the sun/moon" thing works without a flat world, so I assume it's flat (or flattish; it could be slight curved like an inverted dish, or even bowlish).

      @Anonymous
Calamity clearly understood how disturbing having the sun and moon up at the same time was, and the Enclave pegasi actually rioted due to the eclipse. They aren't the result of any controlled vault upbringing or Stabletec propaganda. (Anyway, I thought Stable 2 was the control where they didn't mess with anything...)

The fact that the princesses were keeping some kind of control over the sun and moon that has now been lost is pretty incontrovertible.

      ReplyDelete

Most of the Stables involved social experimentation. Stable 2 was special -- intended not to open until the world was safe again. Its sole purpose was to protect Apple Bloom's family -- consider it the control group. I expect the stories of the Princesses' divinity was brought in by the Apple clan itself.

    156. This may have been asked before, but I've been wondering, why doesn't Little Pip just kill ponies or other creatures with her telekinesis? Rip their limbs off, crush their heart, scramble their brains a bit. Brutal, but effective and with her strength in telekinesis it shouldn't be too much effort. She could save her bullets.

      ReplyDelete
    157. @Sebiale
Actual telekinesis strength is comparable to her physical strength, since what levitation does best is negating gravity and not really applying epic forces to objects.

Feats that require not much energy could be still executed though, and we have seen her using her TK to choke several ponies, so who knows, she might learn new ways to put it to use.

      ReplyDelete
    158. Lilpip already has choked some ponies with her telekinesis and flattened robots with lockers, I think that counts.

However, while it isn't explicitly stated, it is implied that there are a lot of other variable besides simply the objects mass that effect how easy it is to manipulate. It was easier for lilpip to levitate a big chunk of concrete with two ponies and a zebra standing on it than it was to levitate two ponies and a zebra by themselves.

If I were to hazard a guess, living things have some quality about them that can be resistive to magic effects.

Also, using magic is physically draining, where as bullets tend to work the same way every time. Either way, its complicated, doesn't follow any rules of physics that I know of, and its just plain magic.
      ----

In other news, do you suppose Nightmare Moon's armor was a soul jar? It might explain where some of her bitterness and rage went after it was smashed by the Elements of Harmony (the most powerful magic in Equestria) If thats the case, I have a feeling the elements of harmony or something similarly fantastic is going to be required to destroy the black book.

It seems like the Zebra stance on the stars is in part a warning to the viewers about the dangers of censorship. Without understanding, you leave yourselves vulnerable, and in the end they played right into the star's plans (real or imaginary as they may have been)

Using tricks or illusions (like making the sky appear dark) to control superstitious people is much easier then preventing the sun from rising. Unless she really wanted to rule a dead world. Hiding the sun has the same effect on the population while still keeping the warmth of the sun. Life would be hard, but that would just give the population more reason to rely on her.

      ReplyDelete
    163. Also, was Princess Celestia really captured? She wanted her sister back obviously, she just needed some ponies to succeed where she could not so pretending to be captured sets that in motion.

      ReplyDelete
    164. @Arcane Scroll
You're ranging far into the realm of alternate character interpretation just to support the idea that Equestria is round. I'm sorry the actual show doesn't mesh with your personal preferred cosmology, but that doesn't mean you get to rewrite the script.

There's no reason to believe that NMM was somehow hiding the sun. When she was defeated and Celestia released, the sun immediately rose in the normal manner; it didn't suddenly appear in the sky as it would if an illusion were removed.

There's also evidence that Celestia was indeed captured. I'll grant that she may not have put up a fight, knowing the Elements were the only hope for defeating NMM at all, but she clearly descended out of the sun when it was all over. As of Cutie Mark Chronicles, we know this is not the usual method of raising the sun, so the simplest explanation is that she was indeed imprisoned there.

      ReplyDelete
    165. Edit: I'm not saying Equestria is NOT round. But unless there's evidence to the contrary, we have to assume that the Princesses do literally raise the sun and moon. If this was all some elaborate deception, I think some astronomer would have eventually noticed.

No need to run and yell
      Dropping dead will be enough
Calamity says you're out of luck
Don't try to call my bluff

We'll be better off without you
So we hope do whats best
So please, oh please step out from there
And come and face your death

Anon @9:26pm yesterday, I think I like this explanation for the glimpses of the globe the best. A round world with all significant landmasses on one side is one of the ideas some of my fellow proofreaders came up with independently, and it's at least not inconsistent with the canon material. Great minds think alike, huh? I've carefully watched the scene in The Cutie Mark Chronicles and noted that the globe only ever shows two continents, one appearing roughly comparable in percentage of surface area to Eurasia only arranged longitudinally, and one of unknown but at least Australia size extending off the southwest corner of the globe. There could be more landmasses off either edge of the globe, but the east edge seems to be nothing but ocean which would fit this hypothesis. With such a configuration, Celestia and Luna could literally be moving the sun and moon into place (or as Somber said, controlling and regulating an autonomous but normally chaotic process) and the entire surface world would be subject to their actions.

You know, I can't help but think that two weeks of heating a face of the globe that is virtually all water while freezing the opposite side would create some hellacious storms along the twilight boundary. I'm thinking category 5 hurricanes turning to blizzards mixed with fist-sized hail stones would be possible, and if the zebra lands are closest to the twilight boundary, they would be hit the hardest by such storms. I'm thinking Equestria is likely to be closer to the center of the cluster of landmasses if this hypothesis is true.

      @Escher

So...you don't feel that Celestia or the mane six were heroes? I think defeating an opponent like Nightmare Moon is pretty much one of the defining ways of becoming a hero, and I'm not sure the Elements of Harmony would manifest for anyone not requiring them for a heroic task. I agree that Littlepip and company are very different from the mane six, but then their world is very different from the Equestria of old with different and usually much greater challenges facing them. Don't get me wrong; I understand what you're saying, and both you and Spike may be right about Pip's posse. I'm just saying that we've only seen two official examples of what the embodiments of the Elements of Harmony are like, and one of those was Celestia herself who is clearly an exceptional being and therefore a poor measure for normal ponies.

As for Homage, of course she would never have visions of becoming a raider because her virtue is honesty, and that includes being honest with herself and knowing her own heart. I think you may be assuming too much though to say that Homage could never be pushed to the point of slaughtering an entire town. She almost certainly has a different trigger than Littlepip, but that doesn't mean nothing could get to her that badly. "Even Fluttershy had her Gardens of Canterlot." As much as Pip sneaks around, picks locks, hacks computers, and tricks opponents, she will never be the Element of Honesty, but that doesn't knock her out of the running for other Elements. Pip has been through a huge number of changes in a very short space of time and is understandably extremely uncertain of herself, questioning herself, trying to make sense of what she is becoming and take control of the change to keep her essential core virtue unchanged...just as soon as she can figure out what her virtue is. She is not an embodiment of any Element of Harmony right now because she is in flux, but once she fully stabilizes and realizes her virtue...well, let me just say that I personally do not believe Twilight Sparkle was the embodiment of the Element of Magic until the very instant she realized how important her friends had become to her. Still, this is at least partially conjecture, so I could certainly be wrong.

You forgot that Ditzy Doo is also a "confirmed" element of harmony candidate: Laughter.

Planet rotation is the single biggest contributor to weather. Without planet rotation, you don't get trade winds, jet streams or really any stirring of air parcels. There may be relatively strong winds at the terminator, but they will mostly be even and stable. Most of the planet would just feel a gentle breeze. Another reason why it makes sense for Pegasi to control the weather.

      @Derpmind
Ditzy Doo is suspected to be the element of laughter, but there's no reason why she has to be the only pony to embody that element.

Also, it might just be my imagination, but Calamity is channeling the element of Loyalty pretty hard core.

I didn't forget Ditzy Doo. I simply didn't mention her because she wasn't important to what I was saying. If you are referring to my mention of official versions of the Elements of Harmony, what I meant was canon versions. Also, while I do feel Pip is right about Ditzy Doo and Homage, the absolute confirmation won't come until they actually manifest the Elements of Harmony (presumably in Spike's cave, though that too remains to be seen).

      @Anonymous

Anon @7:03pm, I am aware that planet rotation is a strong factor in the weather and the primary cause of winds. First though, while I am no meteorologist, it was my understanding that convection currents are the primary cause of most severe storms. Second, it still hasn't been established whether Luna and Celestia are rotating the planet or moving celestial bodies. If they are doing the latter, the planet may still have some rotation of its own which could provide what weather the wasteland experiences. Or, you know, it could be magic.
      (^.^)

We know for a fact that Ditzy is not the one and only Element of Laughter. Spike said he'd found potentials before -- just never all six at once.

    178. @Kree
Ooh ohh! I know this one, I took a little bit of meteorology back in school. Rosby Waves (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rossby_wave) are caused due to sheer in rotating fluids, and are absolutely critical for severe storms. (There's a reason why tropical cyclones always rotate counter-clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.)

You need convection too, don't get me wrong, but it isn't as big a factor. You might get some convective weather on a non-rotating planet, but the global low pressure system will be centered on the sunward pole, and if that is over a land mass, it is likely to dry up pretty quick.

Anyway, all the heat and moisture in the world isn't going to create lots severe weather unless there is atmospheric instability. If you've ever lived in the midwest united states during the summer, you know what hot and humid with not a cloud in the sky can feel like.

Anyway, I suspect that Equestria rotates, though perhaps a lot more slowly than Earth. After all, the Pegasi did turn their cloud making machines on full blast and left them there, which is where I figured most of the clouds were coming from.

      @Ditzy Doo Debate

Remember, Ditzy Doo was still alive when Pinkie Pie was around to be the Element of Laughter herself. She wasn't THE Element of Laughter then, though perhaps she could have been. What ignites the elements of harmony though is the spark of friendship. Even if Lilpip finds a bunch of random ponies, they're going to need to be friends in order for this to work.

The mane six were the elements AND heroes. I didn't say they were exclusive, just two different things.

On Pip's virtue, I really buy into the theory from a couple comment pages ago that Pip's virtue is Sacrifice (like the PC from Fo3). I have a theory about what that will entail near the end of the story but I don't want to share it since it's potentially a huge spoiler (or just utterly, insanely wrong).

All I'll say is to point out that the Black Book is a zebra (or stellar) artifact, and therefore logically does not require unicorn magic to use.

      ReplyDelete
    180. I still think that Lilpip is going to be magic. After all, friendship is magic, and look at how well Lilpip is bringing everypony together. She even got Steelhooves to work with a Zebra, thats magic right there if you ask me.

Well it worked for My little Portal.

Your song was amazing though! And I did another one :p

When I was a younger zebra and my fate was looking glum
The slavers and the bullies, they would f*** me and beat me down
I'd scream and trash and fight back, for it's a thing I hoped I'd solve
But another slave said that wasn't the way to deal with things at all

She said "Xenith, you gotta lay more low, learn to hide your tears
You'll see that they might hurt you, just wait and they will disappear!
*silence* *they get bored and go away*
      Soooooooo
      Submit to their orders
      learn not to cross borders
      Sneak past trouble-makers
      Hide from drunk late-nighters
Beat up slaves that hurt you
Shut it up when's not your cue

And tell that slave that's watching you to take a hike and leave you alone and if he thinks he can touch you then he's got another hoof coming and the very idea of such a thing just makes you wanna... CRYYYYYYYYYY

What is this place, filled with so many dangers
Pink Cloud's the spell, only one safe's the Ranger
The stuff piles in me, and I melt if I don't heal
Ghouls roaming free and deadly radios I can't hear (can't hear)

Ooohhhh what a f***ed up place
And I can't loot a thing, we're just going through in a race
If I at least knew the plan, I could comfort me a bit
but instead I want soon out, I just wanna leave
      Yes I'd give anythiiiiiiiing

Yeesh, quit apologizing, Kkat, if anything you deserve to take a longer break. You've been spoiling us with, what, one, at times two updates a week so far. I daresay you have the highest word/time ratio of all the authors here.

Besides, it's not like you're intentionally keeping us waiting. Real life has a way of sneaking up on us like that, I think most, if not all of us would've experienced it firsthand ourselves.

Take a break, Kkat, and take care of real life first before tending to us. I mean, yer doing this for FREE for God's sake, an to put it bluntly, I think you've the right to do with your time whatever you damn well please.
