Good alicorn/bad alicorn? Absolutely want. Little girls don't always do good vs. evil play, but they don't mind it a bit if they do. White horses are favorites, as are heroines dressed in white (Princess Leia, anyone?), and black horses are also favorites (Black Beauty, et al). If Nightmare Moon has removable armor, this would be a plus.
Zecora? Probably would want. She has a kind face and magic, and she glows in the dark, and she has stripes. (I loved my tiger stuffed animal, myself.)
Pony with big weird glasses? I'd probably want that one. If I knew she was a pony who liked music and was a DJ, probably I'd be more interested rather than less. She could also double as narrator, sports announcer, rock star, etc.
Trixie does magic tricks, and that is awesome. If I knew she wasn't always a totally good and truthful pony, this would allow for more storyline with the other dolls, using Trixie as an instigator.
Don't recognize the other non-Mane Six ponies, but a lot of girls like styling doll hair.

ReplyDeleteYou'd have to be a pretty boring kid to not think that the DJ Pony is cool looking.
The White Celestia WILL sell among children, especially among the children who have watched the show and noticed that Celestia isn't pink.
The Trixie brushable and the other two recolour ponies will do equally well with children, though the Brony input shall make the Trixie toy's sales larger.
The only real risk here is NMM and Zecora. NMM is a villain, and MLP villains haven't been released as toys before, but since she looks interesting, retains the brushable feature, she may prove to be popular among the children - completely ignoring the obvious popularity among bronies.
Zecora hasn't got a whole lot against her, the main hurdle is that she's the first Zebra to my knowledge, which is funny granted the "My Little PONY" franchise she's part of. But she glows in the dark, has DAT MOHAWK, and the fact that she is incredibly unique in colouring and pattern could make her sought after by children. Again, bronies are bound to seek her out as well, for the above reasons.
I don't think Hasbro will make a loss out of these toys, one way or another, they'll all sell. How much profit they turn is the question. If a particular toy doesn't meet their expected profits, then they might stop producing them.
So just buy ALL OF THE PONIES and things will be good!

Trixie was named Trixie in the show so she will be named trixie and Zecora is her name in the show so she'll get to keep that name. Vinyl is a bit more tricky. She was called DJ Pon-3 on a Hub made Promo so I'm guessing that's the name she will get.

ReplyDeleteFiasco may qualify if taken from the perspective of the community. The Brony community creates Derpy and wishes for her to play a bigger part in the show for a year, and when that finally happens, some members of the community criticize her depiction and write angry letters to Hasbro.

More than anything, think about this: Hasbro usually makes toys that kids will recognize, and DJ P0N3 only had 3 seconds of airtime.

When it comes down to it for a kid, ponies are ponies. Some look cooler than others, but if they haven't been on the show, or only had minimal screen time, that's really the only thing they care about.

Heh heh, given the amount of time it takes to plan something like this, it almost makes me think Hasbro acted very quickly when they found out about bronies and their willingness to spend money. Think about it, who tends to have the greatest purchasing power? Well it's actually men who are over 35 but men in their 20s aren't far behind, especially if it's something inexpensive like toys. ReplyDeleteTroll business strategy there. Each time you buy most of the toys, Hasbro would use the profits to make more of them (as they would be shocked to make so many sales), which you would buy, etc. Eventually you'd run out of money and the remaining toys would go to the remaining bronies.
so, my question is why no derpy? as far as fan faves go, shes up way up there.

It seems Hasbro is pretty confident in their toy sales. That said, I wonder if Princess Cadence is going to be released around the time of a white Princess Celestia so Hasbro can compare which actually sells better--a pink or white toy. I think Hasbro wants to prove to retailers that they will both sell equally well, and that toys for girls don't have to be pink. That would be amazing!

ReplyDeleteActually, this seems like the kind of thing that would've been done a while ago. Toy making is a long process, so these were probably in development before all this Derpy stuff happened.
Because remember, Vinyl was acknowledged way back in the Equestria Girls video, and Derpy first got her own scenes in Season 2, and only got named a few weeks ago.

ReplyDeleteI highly doubt that we're buying "most" of the toys. There may be a lot of us buying toys, but remember, most little girls aren't going about the internet talking about how much they love MLP.
We are not and probably never will be the majority audience. MLP is still a show aimed at young girls, just a damn good one.
