Replying to an earlier anon commment: ".. I wonder why all adult dragons on this show are portrayed as having anger management issues. Is it like, after dragons go through puberty they become assholes?"
Not necessarily, but you *never* mess with another dragon's hoard unless you want to fight. Seriously. Don't do it.
@Jack Pipsam I agree, not that it's a bad thing. This particular story line has been used in almost all cartoons so it makes sense that it would appear in MLP at some point.
Haters gonna hate. This is my favourite episode. Maybe because Spike is my favourite character. The scene where he was laughing evilly and throwing feathers around with Twilight standing in the background was hilarious.
I really enjoyed this episode, and not just because I'm a Spike fan.
I mean, c'mon, who hasn't been jealous of a new sibling and worried they'd be replaced? Considering the show's target audience, that's what the situation mapped to for me.
My favorite part as well. He had the gall to *continue* trying frame the owl even as it was obvious he was caught red, er, footed. Good on ya, Spike. A true villain never admits when he's beaten.
Loved the episode... Aloysius (or should he be "Owloisius"?) is a cute addition to Twilight's family... and a true pet, unlike spike. Plus, he's fun. Who? Aloysius! Who? The owl! Whoooo? (continues ad libitum) The other bits are funny as well, up to and including Doormat... I mean, Scootaloo.
Great episode. I got a lot of good laughs, with Spike Dastardly being my favorite. It's also probably the saddest moment in the series yet. "She doesen't love me anymore?"
I'm baffled at people's dislike for this episode. I think you people need to lay of the fanfics. Their starting to spoil you.
@Anonymous It might also have to do with how we have had a few really high to Celestia tier episodes the past few weeks so we've been spoiled by that. Maybe some people are being over critical of the episode since it didn't hit such standards?
I admit I thought it was just an all right episode at first, but after sleeping on it I'm looking at it in a more favorable light.
It did explore the Spike and Twi dynamic which was sorely needed and helped establish that each really do care for each other. And while it might have had fewer comedic elements than some of the other episodes there were still some clever bits of dialogue.
So overall, I move it up from solid mid tier to upper mid tier or low high tier for me at least.
@Spikefan101 You've hit the nail on the head here, I think. This episode is, at its core, all about sibling rivalry, something that is a major factor in the lives of the show's target audience.
What I liked was not only how they portrayed Spike as a realistic little kid, but how they portrayed Twilight Sparking failing to realize that. Yes, she keeps saying he's "only a baby dragon", but she keeps forgetting that Spike thinks like a child--he lies to cover up embarrassments, he constantly worries over whether Twilight cares for him or not, and he has no moral qualms about framing his rival whom he sees as a threat to his "special relationship" with her.
Twilight, in her usual emotionally clueless manner, doesn't grasp that she's actually Spike's mother figure, with all the emotional baggage that goes with it. It's no wonder he runs away--the way she scolds him may have been appropriate for someone her own age, but for a young child it was terrible.
Don't understand why people are hating on this episode so much. Especially the owl and the dragon.
Think about this with D&D rules and it kind of makes sense. An owl is like a diminuitive or fine creature meaning it gets a circumstancial bonus to its AC for being so small. A Great Wyrm dragon is trying to hit it, but is so large and unwieldly that it gets a penalty to its attack roll for being so large. It makes sense it might miss.
The owl is meh but it will annoy me more if they drop him, just have him in the back ground once or twice just sitting there sleeping or something so we see him but he does nothing
@Sandman The head-rotation seemed like a clear reference, aye.
Though I imagine most of the non-brony audience was unfamiliar with The Exorcist and found it creepy simply because it looks creepy. (And the music/visuals cued it, of course.)
Mutley, you snickering, floppy eared hound. When courage is needed, you're never around. Those medals you wear on your moth-eaten chest Should be there for bungling at which you are best.

Given that owls are night-creatures, I wonder if Owloysius is (perhaps) keeping an eye on Twilight on behalf of Luna?
Twilight and Celestia are close friends, clearly (and Celestia receives regular reports from her student) -- but we haven't heard from (or about) Luna in quite some time.
But here, in an episode which is introduced by night-time celestial events (which should probably be a domain in Equestria that is now governed by the younger of the two sister-princesses) a stealthy nocturnal flyer appears and goes out of its way to be quietly helpful to someone who Luna would have quite a few reasons to be curious about. When discovered, it ingratiates itself further, winding up a "junior assistant" for the pony who (as the Element of Magic) ultimately helped restore Luna. Hmmm.
Perhaps Owloysius is simply a quasi-throw-away minor background character and I'm reading way too much in the way of "foreshadowing" into its appearance. Or perhaps the owl's associations are going to be revealed later ... Spike can get messages to Celestia, but I can't help but wonder: what would happen if something happened to Celestia and Twilight needed to get a message to Luna? Perhaps introducing the owl is all a set up for such an event?
Regardless, I remain your most humble and obedient brony, Loquacious of Herd.
haters are gonna hate. i actually like all of cindy morrow's work - griffon the brush-off gave us gilda, winter wrap-up gave us an absolutely fantastic musical number and showstoppers was honestly the only CMC-centered episode i liked. People complaining about this should remember that episodes have seriously been much worse; pretty much anything by dave polsky is a stinker, for example (feeling pinkie keen, over a barrel).

Every time I see 'Owlolicious' or some other brutal misspelling, I cry a little.
ReplyDeleteAloysius is spelled Aloysius. It's the Latin equivalent of Louis/Ludwig/Luigi. If you must owlify it, it's Owloysius.
(sure I only know this because Aloysius was a character in a Matthew Reilly novel, but still, come on guys)
Green dragon is being called 'Reginald Handling'.

Ponibooru's calling the red one Basil for some reason -- haven't gotten a good explanation why.

ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure Spike isn't a pet.
Someone on TV Tropes noted that this episode finally gave everypony a pet:
ReplyDeleteApplejack -- Winona
Pinkie -- Gummy
Fluttershy -- Angel
Rarity -- Opalescence
Twilight -- Aloysius
Rainbow Dash -- Scootaloo
The owl is meh but it will annoy me more if they drop him, just have him in the back ground once or twice just sitting there sleeping or something so we see him but he does nothing
ReplyDeleteDid anyone else think of The Exorcist when Spike first met Owlicious?

ReplyDeleteYes! I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought that. Especially after Spike said how creepy it was.
