• Would You Guys Like an EQD (DIGITAL) Magazine?

Someone going by the name of Hybrid Rain is offering to do a magazine for us, similiar to the Screw Attack one from a while back.  He wants to hear your feedback on it though!

His initial demo of what it would look like can be found here.

This would be a monthly update, spotlighting some of the more popular things on the blog (Yah, I know it already filters and spotlights things, but this would do it further I guess!)

I'm defenitly liking what I see, but he wants your two cents, so hit up the links below or drop something in the comments to give some feedback on it!

Note: This would be a digital magazine! Not a print one.

    2. Monthly? Do you think there would be enough space?!?
      Other than that, YES

    3. Wow that really does look good. Yes this must be done.

    4. It's a neat idea, but I'm not really impressed by the formatting in the sample magazine. Especially the cover.

      It just doesn't POP.

    5. Only wish I had thought of this meself. This is an EXCELLENT idea!

    6. also don't forget the copyrighted works. Half the stuff that is posted in here would not make it in the magazine. Therefore the magazine would be forced to make original content or articles related to the show. Basically if EQD magazine were to be successful, people would have to skip DeviantArt and submit content (like fan art, photos or fanfics) exclusively to EQD magazine in order for the magazine to get more views than the internet.
I don't know how that could happen but if someone could figure out a system to compensate everyone for their participation while posting interesting content AND avoid any legal issues then this magazine would stay around for a long time. Thank you for reading.

    7. I'm a bit worried that the magazine would not have much of a place in the context of EqD. Anything content-wise that could possibly go into the magazine version simply must also be available on the main blog, both to ensure exposure and time-relevancy.
However, I do like the 'propaganda' idea that’s been floating around. A compilation of the month's most important news, and, most critically, supremely meritorious creative output could be a very useful thing to have on hoof. It would also help to keep bronies up to date on the really big things should they ever come to be unable to visit the blog regularly, for whatever reason.
I don’t know that including full (or especially partial) copies of stories would be a good idea. Perhaps some short stories (under 2000 words, methinks) written in relatively easy-to-read prose might be a good substitute, however. Larger story releases (of complete stories only) could simply be transcluded. I think anything that manages to snag a star-6 tag is probably worth announcing, but we might want to avoid anything that’s more than a little grimdark.
I think what I’m suggesting is something along the lines of an editor panel, with maybe 3-5 ponies on it; just to make sure no noise gets through to the “official” publication. I’d of course be fine with Hybrid Rain heading it up, but I think input from at least two high-profile bronies is an absolute must.
So, I say go for it. I think as a community we should definitely give it a shot, and I’ve got no problem with the Equestria Daily brand on it – if that’s even partially my opinion to have.

    8. Yes please! I'd also love a print magazine, but I know it would never happen. Not at least until we take over the world.

    9. As a student of journalism, recent graduate (give me 48 days and that will be true), and a consumer of new media, let me give you my opinion.

I don't think this is a good idea, nor an idea worth your time. As a blog, Equestria Daily is already performing all the functions a digital news-zine would perform. Granted, you'd be digesting things that weren't fanfiction, but EqD already has the "no fanfiction" button, so that is irrelevant.

While it would be convenient for me to check an e-zine for pony content, I would be just as likely to check EqD itself, since it has more notoriety and a larger readership.

Your idea is good but ultimately it is unnecessary. But if you decide to start it up despite my sagely advice, maybe you'll let me help you? After December, I'm going to be dying to find journalism-related things to do with my time, since that's when I graduate and all.

    12. Only if it was in PDF format, I live in Australia so I wouldn't be able to receive a physical copy. But it seems like an interesting idea :)

    13. But why Flash? Guys, it don't even needs HTML5... just (X)HTML and CSS.
It would be nice, but because of Flash... I can't read it. My Gnash (free Flash player) can't open it.

    14. As long as there's a comics section, yes

      ReplyDelete
    15. Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!

And yes, I am ok. ;)

    16. I read the first thirty or so comments on this post, and then I scrolled down to this comment box. I agree with what [undetermined percentage of commenters] are saying in that if it just copies what the blog posts, that would be pointless. Then again, what we saw was just a sample. I think if there were to be a digital Equestria Daily magazine, it would be great if it compiled highly-rated fan fictions and comic strips. I also think such a magazine should also reprint the really important articles from the EqD blog.

    17. Having the same content from the blog in digital magazine form seems a bit unnecessary. The magazine would always be behind the news. I'd skim it to see the layout, but I wouldn't reread any of the articles.

A physical copy would be more useful, or some exclusive content that took advantage of the magazine format. You could include some pony related puzzles or something.

    18. Oh wow. There can be an editing team, research, thoughtful articles ...

AND SO MUCH PONY AND PICTURES OF PONY.

      This is a great idea.

      ReplyDelete
    19. Well, like others said, I think it would be an interesting idea, but the content in it needs to be somewhat different from the stuff EQD puts up daily.

Since it's a monthly thing, it would be nice for it to show more in-depth analysis, more eagle-eye overviews on a whole month of pony, and yeah I would LOVE text interviews with brony artists (As already suggested, Kkat is willing to do email ones, so get on to it! :D )

Video, music and art spotlight are a nice filler, and I don't mind the reader's corners and the occasional ads (as long as they concern the pony community, like that Mic the Mic one and the Brony podcast)

Be sure to open up for suggestion/feedback/occasional article to the reader public, the brony mass sure is a creative bunch, and many won't hesitate to collaborate in this!

Whatever you are planning to do, I wish you good luck with your project :)

    20. Oh yes. I think the formatting (fonts and spacing between text and pictures) needs a little work, but I would love this.

      ReplyDelete
    21. I say do it.
But if you can take it a step further and do a print out. Hell Id buy it!

      ReplyDelete
    22. I'd say go for it, but I don't really see the point in the format.

      ReplyDelete
    23. This actually sounds like an awesome idea!

    25. To make it worthwild youd have to save important information and items for it only, otherwise it would basically be "Equestria Dailies best of the Month" Magazine. And since most of the submissions are from fans youd have to get them to play along.

      ReplyDelete
    26. This looks so aweosme thta it would be even more awesome as real-life magazine.

      ReplyDelete
    27. Sure man, go for it.

I need more reasons to get me an iPad2 anyways XD

      ReplyDelete
    28. Hm, I like the idea and what I see. Some more condensed community news would be awesome

      ReplyDelete
    29. Put it on iOS newsstand and i say yes

      ReplyDelete
    30. I support this idea. EqD is a great site, but I'm sure there might come a time when I'm not checking it every day.
It would be nice to have a record of all the major things that have happened in the last month, without having to sift through everything else.
Plus, the artists who's work gets featured get a bit more longer-lasting exposure.

      ReplyDelete
    31. Only if it had the same coverage as the website. I do most of my EQD reading through the RSS feed on my iPhone, and reading a magazine like this would be damn near impossible.

      ReplyDelete
    32. Meh. Just a bunch of the same stuff from the blog. I wouldn't give it special attention.

      ReplyDelete
    33. No. It's a paper layout for... digital information? That's just going backwards. The blogger format as is isn't really appropriate for a news site, and having a set layout as in a magazine makes even less sense.

      ReplyDelete
    34. Wow! This is a great idea. I would definitely love this kind of thing, as long as it's free. Anypony who wants to have a paper copy can just print it out! :D

      ReplyDelete
    35. Absolutely!!!!!! Should find a way to make a smartphone app for it too..

      ReplyDelete
    36. I'm not totally sure about this one.
First of all I support ANY fan creation and work, pretty much regardless of what it's aiming for.

My first thought was that since it's going to feed off EqD, it seems like doubleing the site. I don't see the point of that.

On the other hand for those who simply can't linger around the site all day and can't take part in the bigger community events, this might be a great thing. A monthly magazine containing the most popular happenings. So yes I definitly see a place for the magazine.

Also, comong just think about it, how cool is that. A Brony Magazine? Don't say anything. Just repeat these words in your head. Brony - Magazine.

Yes it's pretty cool huh? ;-)

As for the demo, I like it.

So overall, you have my support and I believe it would be a nice addition to the community.

    37. I think this is a beautiful idea. I'd love to have the Digi-zine downloadable... something anypony could look back through and collect, like any ol' magazine off a store rack...

Also, suggestion! An optional donation button. I'd throw some bits in for it.
      Or perhaps pay to download?

What the hay, all I'm trying to say is... YES.

    39. If he's needing content, the Equestria Inquirer is always willing to contribute. Hit me up at [email protected] and I'll provide something.

      ReplyDelete
    40. If he would enjoy doing it as a sort of recreation, it sounds like a good idea to me. But otherwise i'd say no since it seems like it's mostly a 50/50 cast.
