If "Star Swirl" is indeed the name of Twilight's costume, then it's definitely referencing something out of a book of hers, or Equestrian history. If it's the latter, I expect it to spawn a fair number of fanfics.
I'm guessing that rainbow dash's costume started out as a wonderbolt, Theissen and Wootie were probably like "too predictable" and made the change to the obviously cooler shadowbolt costume.
Fluttershy isn't going to have a costume. C'mon, this is a pony who gets sacred at her own shadow at times, what do you really think the odds of her even answering the door are going to be, let alone go out and brave a night for celebrating the scary?
Her house will have all the lights turned off, the door locked, windows boarded up, and she'll be hiding under the bed.
It'll be a really neat nod to continuity if there is some sort of interaction between Luna, and the fact that Rainbow Dash is wearing a Shadowbolt costume.

Rarity goes through multiple costumes. She wants hers to be so awesome and unique that she keeps undoing and redoing it whenever she sees one with the same costume and does this for most of the episode. In the end she just goes as herself.

I was THIS CLOSE when I called the costumes a couple weeks back. I had Twi as a sorceress, Dash as a Wonderbolt, AJ as a scarecrow (nailed it!) Rarity as Juliet or something, Flutters as a bunny, and honestly, I had no effing clue as to Pinkie. But the chicken getup doesn't surprise me.
I can't wait to see fluttershy's outfit. Probably obviously going to be something cute. ( Like that rabbit costume someone put her in a while back for a fan made halloween event )

It has been a very very long time since I have given the tiniest amount of thought as to what someone was going to be for Halloween, but by god I MUST know what Rarity is going as!
If the reason for the costumes for Nightmare Night is the same as it is for All Hall's Eve/Halloween than they are meant to scare the jerks that don't like leaving them alone rather than each other so a costume of a villain that is seen to be scary is perfectly valid during that time.

Rainbow Dash has too much respect for the real Wonderbolts to appear to be masquerading around as one of them. If Scootaloo dressed like a Wonderbolt, then that'd be harmless -it would be like a kid dressing up as a Blue Angel; if an adult did it, it would just seem kind of disrespectful, but for a little kid it would show admiration.
Here's an idea for a drinking game: Watch the episode on a live stream. Take a shot everytime someone makes a "Pinkie Pie is Scootaloo" comment. The last one alive wins.

OK, in all honesty...
I am LOVING Luna's look! I always figured she'd either grow into or power back up into a form that was more like her sister.
She should not have the same stature though... Luna IS, after all, Celestia's little sister. I think she is PERFECT!
Also, to everypony whining that they gotta change all their Luna art... Luna spent a year recovering. I'm sure her mane didn't pop back into it's celestial night form overnight. There is CERTAINLY room for both styles, the same way there is room for foal, filly, young mare, and adult mare Celestia art.
