Memories: A Rainbow Dash 'Tail'

Confound it... Adding the "Up" beginning song to this comic is just evil.

I'm so glad these ponies will never actually get old in the show.  (Assuming Twilight doesn't screw up an aging spell in some episode, since she apparently can't cast complex spells without ruining something!)

Anyway, have it after the break!

A pretty good adaptation of the comic. I like. ^^

Oh my god. I cried.

AND THE VIDEO WASN'T EVEN FINISHED.

Ace2401 said...

I don't see why people think that comic was sad. Rainbow Dash was reminiscing her happy, fulfilled life.

Canvas Wolf Doll said...

blah! the original comic was sappy as it was (in a good way)! why'd did they have to go and up the sappy/nostalgic feel? 100/100 for awesome.

VooDooZecora said...

I saw this a while ago, made me so happy. i don't think its sad she lived her dream! (could have had more of a midlife, and maybe a crysis) but very good art and story anyways

And of course I have to say that motion comicking it made it 20% cooler. :D

Jeez, that comic was both so happy and sad. Same with the video. I was starting to get teary-eyed watching it. Nicely done.

ToonNinja said...

I am currently having trouble seeing through the manly, manly tears that are blurring my vision right now. That's just not f*cking fair.

Krizak said...

It was nice. It didn't make me cry twice like Up's actual opening did, but it was nice.

Dammit... how am I supposed to be a emotionless bastard when these ponies keep on reminding me that I actually have feelings!?

Manly tears have been shed.

It's so beautiful, I cried tears of joy.

Come12and3 said...

So sad, yet so perfect. The music makes it show a whole other side to Rainbow Dash's personality. So brilliant. I won't cry...

Nymo said...

Funny: When I first read that comic, that same song from Up played in my head. Wonderful adaptation of a bittersweet comic. Now if you excuse me, I'm going to wipe my manly tears for a moment...

Sketchy Sounds said...

@Ace2401

Tears aren't always shed due to sadness.

On topic, this is just as beautiful as it was in comic form. Props to whoever put it together.

Phoe said...

@Ace2401

That's exactly why it does make me cry. The unrestrained joy of such a passionate dream lived to the fullest, and the quiet dignity of reliving the memories years later are... staggeringly beautiful. In much the same was as the 'At the Gala' song left me a quivering mess, this comic and now the video version expertly pushes all of my squishy sentimental buttons.

In other news, splicing the clips from the show with the comic scenes really does an amazing job of showing just how on-model the artist was with Dashie. It's pretty darned amazing.

kwj said...

wow it's even better now and i swear to elestia i didn't cry no i didn't

Flygon16 said...

No manly tears here. This was quite a nice adaptation of a very heart-warming and contentment-inducing comic. A long life lived to the fullest should not be mourned, but rather celebrated.

Now, that opening scene from "Up"...god, I'm getting misty-eyed just thinking about it...

Flygon16 said...

@Phoe
Well, when you put it that way, then yeah, I can understand tears of joy being shed.

And yes, original artist is credit to fandom, as is the video maker.

MikeOShay said...

@Ace2401 "Sad" is a pretty bad word to use to describe it. I don't think "bittersweet" even fits it, it's just extremely heartwarming to see something so positive like this, to see an example of someone who worked hard and managed to live their life to the fullest and fulfill their dreams.

Mattatatta said...

Only the sound of a distant cricket, and a soft whirr from my computer could be heard for several minutes after that video ended.

I needed some time alone...

Ace2401 said...

@Phoe

It's not people crying, that I totally understand. I just remember people saying that this comic made them sad when it was first posted.

Overlong Analysis Cobalt said...

I'd probably get all misty eyed if I wasn't so damn dehydrated from overindulgence in coffee and this frickin' cold. But I gave a smile, and that was enough.

solobutterfly said...

Wonderful blend of the truly great comic and scenes from the show and Micheal Giacchino's score *sigh* Gosh I hope I get to hear him conduct this live when he's at my local symphony later this season.

Saddlesoap said...

I feel that the real core of this comic was the panel where RD reacts to getting the acceptance letter.

Her quiet - almost restrained - tears of joy really hammer home how much that moment would (will?) mean to her.

Ohmygosh^10 is fine for general good news, but the idea that achieving her life's goal would be met with something more internal and profound just seems to...work.

And the addition of a little motion and some suitably sentimental music only serves to emphasize that.

A slowly-building round of stomped applause to all Ponies involved. Bravo!

Suffuri said...

Admittedly this and the opening scenes to Up remind me quite a bit bout aging and dreams... flying and all.

Streek471 said...

Nice comic put to nice music. Though this made me happy, while Up crushed me.

Ruxin12 said...

I can feel the tears trying to form, but one's body can only take so much pony before an immunity is built up. I swear, back in June this would have made me ball my eyes out.

This made my soul hurt D:.......Well the good news is; DUE TO MY DENIAL PONIES NEVER AGE OR DIE! *goes and has mental breakdown in a corner*

Oh my, How awesome was that. The end for me... That was the same as the first time I read "The last Sonic Rainboom" from the "Nightfall" series. *sigh* Why is it so hard for me to forget that series of stories. :'C

It was that face of elderly Dashie that totally broke my composure there. How can a "cartoon" figure like her have this much effect on others. Maybe it's the extra life we breath into them every day with our stories, drawing, and overall imaginations...

mistal said...

there's something in my eye... very touching and well done...

Flutterfan said...

I cried from the comic. Now I cried 2 or 3 times to this...Me Gusta. I am running out of manly tears here, man!

Dr. Henry Killinger said...

Oh Pixar, you and your mortality themed movies. Many manly tears were shed throughout the years, but it was worth it.

The beginning of Up was definitely tough to watch, but I think the award for greatest tear-jerker goes to Toy Story 3's ending. Maybe because the whole series was built for my generation, or just the concept of it all. Had me and my many manly man friends trying (and failing) to not show any signs of weakness during that sucker.

Violet Droplet said...

Oh Celestia, this is why I love this fandom. No matter how much I expect beautiful things to pop up, nothing could've really prepared me for this.

Near the end there, I was actually moved to sob a little bit as a happy laugh escaped my lips.

Stuff like this is what makes this fandom so wonderful. Thank you.

Paraderpy said...

I think the fact that we are all so familiar with Dash is part of what makes us react to this the way we do, but it's also something we can probably all relate to ourselves. We all have dreams, we all want to be that satisfied Dash at the end of her days who looks back upon her life with satisfaction and pure bliss. We are sad because those times that provided so many good memories will never come again, but we are thankful that we were given the opportunity to have those times.

*sniff*

And that song from Up fits amazingly well, I must say...

jeffbridges said...

Gese, I had to pause as soon as the music started to take a minute to ready myself. A test for androids and sociopaths? Yeah, pretty much.

Smellybananna said...

Darn, I really thought I wasn't going to cry but then I cried like no other.

Kezarim said...

Adding up that song is simply CRUEL.

Yet, it will make one person very happy. I shed a single manly tear (only a single one!), which was carefully filled into a flask. It will be mixed with a virgins blood, a dragons scale, a pinch of gold and a tiny fracture of a diamond the size of a head.

This mixture is very rare (it contains a mans tears!) and said to cure cancer.

Flameheart said...

This gave my heart mixed Emotion, mostly happiness that Dash fulfilled her dreams. The song fits this perfectly. =D

Someone beat me to it, but to use SCIENCE! to explain this emotional reaction, well, it can be predictably "coached" because it taps one of the only things every single person has to face:

Mortality.

When you combine it with something that you admire or love and use it to provoke those feelings, man, it hurts.

Not saying I escaped the knot in my stomach either. I myself always get hit by these types of things because thinking of the "End" hits hard on me.

rainboomdash said...

Okay, this is going to be a long one, but wow.. this video has done something to me. Like almost everyone else, it made me tear up, especially elderly Dash. For me, it made me realize I'm wasting time, I'm not working on accomplishing my ultimate life goal, and lives to short to be doing that. Ive got a terrible habit of procrastinating, and I've been putting off what i truly want to accomplish before my time is up

I want to eventually be like that last panel, looking back on my life knowing I've fulfilled my dream. Ever since filly Dash discovered her goal, she's spent her life working towards it. She never let go of her dreams of becoming a Wonderbolt. Even when times where tough and everything was against her, she never let go of the dream. Eventually all that work payed off for her.

I've let my dreams slip for the past few years, I've been putting them off. Ive become conferrable at my day job, but have stopped thinking of my dream job. I haven't felt the passion i once had for my future in so long, until now. Ive just realized how much precious time I've let slip past me, doing almost nothing productive. I could be working at my dream job right now, instead of nightshifts at a convenience store. After spending the past few years trying to convince myself to get back on the ball, but quickly losing interest, its an animated pegasus that really wakes me up. Ive got a feeling i'm not sleeping tonight, Ive got some long overdo work to catch up on. (This video has also convinced me to finally comment on something, guess I'm not a lurker anymore.)

A life well lived is infinitely better than one with regret. That was the point of Up and shown in practice here. Damn these emotions.

S008 said...

I actually can't imagine her being old. Come on, we all know that she has to time to get old between being active and napping!
On the realistic side, I agree that thinking about either their lives (those of the ponies, whom we all know and love) changing or an aspect of it ending is saddening, no matter how you approach the topic.
I better man up and not think about it; else I'd could ponder about it for seemingly endless hours.

I honestly don't think that song went well with the comic, it didn't flow right and seemed kinda awkward at times. The comic stirs up a lot of emotion in me, and that got me like it does whenever I read that comic. But this adaptation really didn't stir anything more like I was hoping it was going to.

Good effort though ^^

Nostalgia is a beautiful thing, especially with a happy life. It gives us the courage to go on, it gives us the ability to follow our dreams...
It gives meaning to life.

Awwing right now. That was a sweet little adaption. Much props. No tears though, as many others stated a life well lived shouldn't be mourned. :)

musicssound said...

Up theme is now stuck in my head. Thanks. I'm going to go insane, as I always do when a song this expressive and dynamic gets stuck in my head. Heck, I nearly went insane when I mastered Everlong on acoustic and started to figure out how it sounded with a REALLY slow section in the middle.
And I've now got two problems. I don't currently have a dream job, or dream accomplishment, or dream anything.
And I've also realized, neither does Twilight. I was thinking of how some kind of sequel would go, with even more realized dreams. Most emotional moments possible: RD joining the WonderBolts, RD leading the WonderBolts, RD having to leave the WonderBolts. FS getting too old to take care of the animals, and the animals take care of her, or she finds a replacement (even odds it'll be Angel). AJ sees Granny Smith die, AJ meeting a lover, and her kids taking over the farm, as she slowly becomes like Granny Smith (who always came across to me as not quite realizing that AJ has become matriarch of the family). Rarity...I can't think of anything for her. Her dream of becoming a dressmaker already happened, I'm fairly sure she's at least known in Canterlot, her entire prince fantasy went out the window in ep 26. Pinkie...She's living her dream. The only thing I could think of is throwing the hugest party possible across all of Equestria (and meeting every pony in Equestria at the party if it lasts longer than 5 minutes.) Twilight doesn't have a goal from here. She's just having fun with her friends and fulfilling royal duties. I could see her taking a ridiculously Mary Sue route and becoming equivalent with a royal sister, but that'd be really hard on her friendship master status, what with the immortality thing.
