    1. Despite all the hatin', this is still one of my favorite fics out there.

When it comes to the revisions, I have to admit to my chagrin that on at least one point I should have kept my mouth shut. As the story originally went, Celestia's confiscating of Nyx was heartrending and terrifying. What she intended to do (if Nyx was Nightmare Moon, she intended to literally DISINTEGRATE her!) was frightening enough to fully justify Twilight's panic and despair-- and her unwillingness to contact her mentor in the first place. But it was a little too extreme to fit Celestia, and I (and a lot of other fans) objected vociferously.
But the current revision goes a little too far in the other direction--- Celestia doesn't even suggest anything so dire for Nyx's fate, and reassures them both that she's only taking Nyx till the next day. Even though Twilight is aware that there's a big "IF" in that statement, it still makes both Nyx's fear and Twilight's panic seem overwrought. If perhaps Nyx had a moment where she realizes that the reason Twilight had been hiding Nyx was because she was afraid Celestia would take her away.... or, more grim, some indication in some way that Celestia had no intention of ever bringing Nyx back. One or two sentences could do it, really.

Of course, look what happened the LAST time I stuck my oar in....

    2. People have been griping that Nyx spends most of the start of the story as a crybaby. They're missing the fridge brilliance here...
Of course she's a crybaby. Nightmare Moon was made up of all Luna's hateful thoughts and negative emotions, including her loneliness, unhappiness and low self-esteem. Nyx was innocent, but she still was literally born alone, lost, afraid, and convinced that nobody loved her or ever would.

....Aww, now I REALLY wanna give her a hug. :(

    3. Holy Mackerel, this looks awesome... but that scene with Twilight on the gallows... idk...

But you don't have a sad or grimdark tag on this story...

Oh... to read or not to read?

      *deep breath*

      READ.

*closes eyes and clicks first chapter...*

    4. Sat down and read the whole thing through, took several hours but it was a fantastic read.

Am I the only one that wants to see a picture of the new Luna?

    6. Comments really need an edit feature.

      Anyway...

      @rockerman100:
There probably are a lot of people like me out there. I only became aware of, much less watched my first episode a few weeks ago.

I only found out about this fic from reading a comment that mentioned the name and made me curious enough to look it up.

Heh, I only found this -site- after looking up Lauren Faust and seeing her interview mentioned and that was... a matter of a few days ago as I recall.

I can't imagine there aren't other people who just haven't heard of it yet.

    7. I've finally finished reading this, and I must say, this is the best fan fiction I have ever read. Unfortunately, I'm not the kind who can just make a review in a minute, so I'll just say this:

If you haven't already, read this fic now. Just do it, you'll be glad you did.

Also, many thanks to Pen Stroke and Batty Gloom for making such an amazing story!

      ReplyDelete
    8. Hey, look, I'm commenting right now after everything is over!

Just gotta say this was amazing. One of the only books that could keep me up at night reading.

Yay, internet! Also, thank you Pen Stroke!

    9. I read this story. I enjoyed this story. I think it gets a lot of unwarranted hate... but please, everybody, stop treating it like it's the greatest thing ever written, because it is a far cry from that.

    10. FAR AND AWAY the best fanfic i have ever read. not the best MLP fanfic.. the best fanfic period. An excellent story excellently told

      ReplyDelete
    11. This was an excellent fanfic. If I had to nitpick, I felt the teen chapters were a bit repetitive, as they muddled over NMM repeating the same thought process over and over and over. But still, overall, very nice! It took up my whole day to read, and I thank you for giving me something to do. I give this fic a solid 9/10 4 out of 5 stars.

    12. My God, this is one of the most well thought out stories I have ever read, and I've read a lot of books.
They should make a movie based on this story.
      IT'S THAT GOOD.

      ReplyDelete
    13. This is by far one of the most gripping and well thought out stories that I have ever had the pleasure of reading.
There should be an episode like this, no, better yet, a movie.

    14. Hay PenStroke, was/is that new fic out approved by you? Just wanna know so that One knows if one can read it or not.

    15. Wow, just wow. I can't actually sum up in words how good this story is, I actually kind of hate myself for not finding out about it sooner. Its almost like becoming a Brony again because I was slightly curious at first about the hype it got, I read a couple of chapters and got quite interested then read on the next day and couldn't get enough, going through the next 18 chapters in one sitting (with breaks of course.. I regret nothing).

I'm generally quite bad at reviewing anything because im a terrible critic plus I don't like spoilers anyway so I will avoid saying much about the plot but I can definitely say that you would have to be crazy not to read it, indeed if you haven't read it yet then stop looking at my comment and click that 0 at the top of the page because you definitely won't regret it.

But in all honesty I don't think I've ever expressed so much emotion over a piece of fiction before and certainly never a fanfiction I genuinely broke out into tears of joy and sorrow at some parts as Twilights relationship with Nyx was incredibly touching to say the least and the events that unfold through the story that developed Nyx as a character and how she reacts to what she becomes was simply amazing (I know, im terrible at this)

But really this was just incredible, personally I think it deserves to have its own permanent spot on the front page of EQD because it deserves the attention of everyone in this fandom and anyone that ever decides to become a part of it.

Pen Stroke, thank you for writing this incredible piece of literature that has engrossed me so vividly for the past day and a bit and will probably engross me many many more times whenever I decide to re-read it.
You sir are a fantastic author and I'm looking forward to more of your work, All my thanks.

    16. You know what? I completely and utterly hate this fanfic. You know why? Because I just spent the past 5 hours finishing it... and I have a chemistry test tomorrow.

      So yeah. 5 stars.

      ReplyDelete
    17. It took me about 3 days to finish this story. And in almost every chapter I teared up just a bit. All out cried in the tenth chapter. But I had the warmest feeling in me when I read the final chapter. I'm gonna rate this 5 stars even though it's worth more.

      ReplyDelete
    18. I'm just starting chapter 16 now.

I've been crying for fifteen minutes straight.

      ReplyDelete
    19. Goddamn...I don't even know what to say. All day I've been just thinking and thinking of giant paragraphs to write to the author about how awesome this is and how he needs to shut up and take my money and such.

Putting it short, getting me to read is a VERY hard task, let alone reading 500-something pages. I need to find the author's paypal address so I can pay for the novel I just read.

Good work, my heart; it has stopped countless times while reading this.

    24. Dang! The size of the comment section has nearly doubled since my last time viewing this page. Glad to see Pen Stroke getting more love.

Just want to reiterate that this fic is the best thing I have seen, heard, done, or tasted. It is better than any published book I've read, and that's saying a lot. It is the only piece of fiction that has made me shed tears, and it made me do so for joy and sorrow on multiple occasions. Pen Stroke is a master of molding a mood, and that skill comes to the fore in this fic.

Anyhow, don't forget to visit its trope page and see if you can think of something that should be on there that has been missed.

      @The Great and Powerful Trevor:
Yes, Fandom Crisis's usage of Nyx was authorized by Pen Stroke himself. If I recall correctly, Pen Stroke even helped the author out a bit on writing her.

    26. I seem to be noticing more grammar and spelling errors after the final update. What happened?

      ReplyDelete
    27. @Treebohr

Mind if I ask what you mean by Final Update? Are you talking about the update of the last three chapters? And, if you are, what things are you noticing?

      ReplyDelete
    28. I just finished all 553 pages and I would like to that that story was top notch quality; publishable quality even. The quality astounds me. I was left speechless at the imagery that filled my head as I read, it was like watching a movie. I went bro-tears (being a parent myself) at the interaction between Twilight and Nyx (my heart burst when she screamed "MOMMY!"). I am dissapointed though. I wanted she and Celestia to go at it. I wanted Twilight to get all momma bear about her cub on Celestia and get her eyes all white in indignational fury over taking her child, but it wouldn't have really fit so I can see why you didn't.

      ReplyDelete
    29. @DJilliill HA! You wanna know what's funny? It's 3am and I've got an exam at 9am that I need to start studying for because of this story. But you know what? I don't really car :D

    30. This is a great read, and I've no trouble giving it 5 stars. Though a couple of criticisms remain.

The foalish/foolish thing. The first implies childish, which didn't always right in context.

Secondly the whole Nyx/Nightmare Moon thing. At the end of the story there is a strong contrast between what they know happened, and how they behave. While I appreciate it's probably the irst time ponies have come across this situation, their conceptions of irriducability (vague term used to avoid spoilers) directly conflicts with evidence that is sitting directly in front of their eyes. This makes a few of the letters sound hypocritical, and almost all of the principle characters sound extremely foalish on occasion. In both senses of that term.

Still, a great read. And highly recomended.

      ReplyDelete
    31. I mean, after the last three chapters were put up, I read those, but didn't reread the whole thing. Then, I recently started rereading, and it seems like there are more small errors in the spelling and grammar during the beginning chapters.

They might have been there the whole time without me noticing them, though. I'll have to check.

      ReplyDelete
    32. Read this after the final chapters were added, and I gotta say, this was the best thing I've ever read. Hell, I WANT this to become canon. I even made a movie poster for if it got adapted: http://eddmario.deviantart.com/#/d4dyvyy

      ReplyDelete
    33. Whoa, this story was just incredible. All the stuff that happened, the imagery, the characterization...quite the story, indeed.

That said, I still found minor spelling/grammar errors sprinkled throughout the piece, especially in the later chapters. I don't know how often Penstroke or Batty Gloom check the comments here, but if either one is willing, I could go through and highlight the errors...then the story really would be the best it could be.

    36. On scale from 0 to 10 i would give this story a 9,5. It's simply fantastic, and if it would, by some miracle, became official movie it would be great, with some additional tunning. I was a bit dissapointed that Luna had so small role in story, and that her battle with Nightmare Moon was offsreen. I also think that some chapters and some angs with them is a bit too much longer that necessary. Still this story is great and i think that it should be put on fanfiction.net so even more people would have chance to read this.

      ReplyDelete
    37. lol funny thing some bronies went into rage mode saying celestia was out of character....
and when nightmarenigt came on tv luna was nothing fandom expected, gess the real luna was out of caracter , or maybe evrysinge fanfic is out of character but you dont se people saying "fix this fanfic we need luna in chanterlot's royal vioce!!! " lol

slowpoke i know should post this weeks ago lol

      ReplyDelete
    38. @Dakaros

That's because Luna hadn't really been established as a character yet, so the fans could be forgiven for writing her however the hell they wanted before any canon was available. Luna could not have been "out of character" in the show because fanfiction is not, and will never be, canonical. Anyone who thinks the creators of the show could incorporate fanfiction into canon without having to deal with a massive pile of legal issues that would not make it worth it is a delusional fool.

In contrast, Pen Stroke more or less threw canon out the window a few times when writing Celestia as well as Twilight. As one of the reviewers who worked on the latest set of revisions, this was one of the biggest issues I had with the story, and I said as much rather loudly a few times.

Much as I wish more could have been done in this area to improve the plot, it is ultimately Pen Stroke's story.

So, to sum up: Luna could be out of character in past fanfics because there was no canon available. There was plenty of canon available to write Celestia's character.

      You may cry,
      but the tears will dry
when he hands you the keys
      to a shiny new Equestria.

Seriously, though, this is the only piece of fiction that I have shed tears of either joy or sorrow over. I regret it not.

      @Dakaros
I still remember those crazy days back when the fic was still updating. Them debates on Celestia's being in character but under stress or unforgivably out of character sure were fun. No need for us to dig up old flame bait, though. The amount of vitriol spewed over that detail in particular was astounding to me.

      ReplyDelete
    42. @Bugsydor
Haha, yeah, I remember arguing about that point. It was, in fact, my first comment on an Eq Daily post, if I'm not mistaken. Sweet Celestia and Luna, I remember waiting anxiously for the final 3 chapters to be uploaded. And also stopping reading the redone chapters midway (about Ch 6) through, because I was a foal and read through some of the comments, so I was nervous about Nyx possibly dying. I was glad when I finally forced myself to read through Ch 18. Of course, then there was the matter of waiting for the final 3 chapters, but all was forgiven.

      ReplyDelete
    43. just got about halfway through chapter 10, eeyup, knew I was going to cry

      ReplyDelete
    44. Does twilight die in this story, because I can't read a fanfic where she does. I did once and my stupid brain made it so when I watched MLP all I could think of was twilight dying(Those thoughts passed, by the way). I've only heard good things about this fic, so I really want to read it. I don't mind the spoiler, just a yes or no would be nice.

      ReplyDelete
    45. Very nice story, though there's room for improvement. Chapters above 10 tends to drag too much and feels forced and bit unnatural. And there is a bit to much angs and drama in them for my liking. You (autors) would notice this too if you will look at this story from perspective of readers. Nyx seems too much lost sometimes for her status as queen. Simple cutting out/changing unnecessary part of later chapters and reducing angs and drama in them would make even better story. And artwork in first chapters was nice touch, it should be added to others chapters. Lack of Luna-Nyx battle also was bit disappointing to me. Overall very good story but another revision and polishing would make this story even better.

      ReplyDelete
    46. And now somepony who goes by the deviant name "space-is-pretty-big" has started creating a comic version of this glorious fic like has been suggested countless times in this very comic section. Now that Nyx has conquered prose, fanart, music, and now comics; all we need to do is get some people together to fanimate this for her to achieve global domination! ^3^

    50. This... This is amazing. I noticed this story out of the blue when I read a spinoff fanfic (fandom crisis) and I must say that I was floored by the amazing quality of this tale. It makes you laugh, cry, and gasp in just the right amounts and it leaves you wanting more. I haven't cried in several years, however I am willing to admit that I came dangerously close to spilling some tears when Twilight realized she had let Celestia take Nyx away. The character's personalities are captured perfectly. I could not ask for a more accurate depiction. Pinkie Pie especially had me appreciating this author's attention to detail. Being a fan of the show, I couldn't help but laugh at all the direct and indirect quotes. Somehow Dash slipping in "Pinkie Pie, you are so random", as well as other well-placed tidbits just lent to the overall feel of the story. The humor also had me rolling on floor. I nearly lost it at "She turned Fluttershy into a tree!" as well as "Spell Nexus has broken himself into the castle dungeons". The author definitely has a good grasp of comedy. Of course, the overall message of the story is abundantly clear, and at the end you feel like you've learned something important. the overarching theme of "people can change for the better", coupled with the tried and true "friends are the most important thing a person can have" creates a sweet and heartwarming experience that is easily enjoyed. Listen to me, I'm ranting, but I feel it's justified. Since this post is in danger of becoming a chapter of its own, I'll end it with this: having read my fair share of fanfics and being well acquainted with how badly creating an original character for a story can go, I must say, Nyx was woven into this tale seamlessly and I have exactly zero complaints about her being the mane (intended misspelling) character. To conclude, I applaud this fanfic as a work of professionalism as well as the result of a tremendous amount of effort. I am proud to say that it has definitely earned a spot in my top three fanfics of all time.

    56. Very short version: This story got the 2nd-strongest emotional reaction out of me out of everything that happened to me this year. I didn't quite cry, but I came pretty close a couple times. Oh, and this story messed up any hope of me getting a good night's sleep yesterday. I was so busy thinking about the story that I probably spent 1/3 of my time in bed awake. -_-

    57. I do not believe there are words in the English language to express exactly how much I enjoyed this Fanfic.

So I will simply say that it is... nice.

Or maybe I should call it super-ultra-extremawesamazing.

Either way, this was a seriously well-written piece, I myself became extremely emotionally invested in the characters. Not only those established in the show, in which you did an awesome job (in my humble opinion) of holding true to their characters in a more mature setting. But also Nyx, a pony you created from the ground up, pulled my heartstrings more than a few times. Kudos to you. I sincerely hope that there are more tales to be told, for I have grown rather fond of Nyx.

    58. So I have read this Story Oh I dunno 3 times over now? Ever since I moved back from Catalina Island as A dive instructor I first heard about the Bronie thing over the radio on the Mark and Brian show. My initial reaction (as i am sure with plenty of others) was What The Fark? Though being the non judging person I was I decided to leave it at that and other people's interests where just that and did not bother me one bit. I was browsing Memebase at work being bored and saw a poster for a past sins movies (which we all know was just wishful thinking) It instantly caught my attention and I saw a link for the Fan Fic, My curiosity got the best of me and I have been needing a good read. I saw the Fan Art for it and figured 6 stars plus art, music, and over 3.5k comments warranted my interest even if I was not a bronie.

I am glad to this day I took that step of curiosity...The story immersed me in feelings that I have not felt in a long time...I wanted to thank you Pen Stroke for this fantabulious OC (Nyx who I have come to enjoy a lot) this story single hoovedly (i think that was correct) Brought me in to this very wonderful, and intelligent community. I my self am a Bronie now and I enjoy. I also noticed in some of the comments (yes i read them all) that their is some trolls and flamers out there which is fine by me any great story will have those (just look at the HP series or Narnia) when you have haters and a lot (and i mean a lot) of people who love it then that means you made the perfect story. I am currently reading other fan fics (Creeping darkness being one of them, loved the portal cross over btw) and i am enjoying it quite bit. I have watched all the EP's and still watching the show and Community closely as since my imagination is allowed to run here with out any issues of my own discretion. Also as I read through the comments you where stated that you enjoyed having an extra set of eyes and people to help with papers and stories. I would ask that if I can help? I have written many different scientific papers that have been published and I have helped other authors with their Fan fics. I would consider it an honor to help you out. Sorry this comment is so long It is hard to express my enjoyment in such few words for this fic. I will shoot you my E-Mail in a PM on Dev. Art here soon. Again thank you

    63. It is nearly 5 o'clock in the morning now, and I finally have ended the reading of the 3rd version of your story, after I had read version 1 and 2 some weeks and months ago. I have to say that the story (no matter which version) is one of the best fanfiction (no matter which fanfiction-universe) I have ever read. Thank you very much for writing, adjusting and sharing :-).
I would very enjoy a sequel, but I guess it would be quite hard to start one. I would also interested into a copy of version 2, because you had overwritten the google-docs with version 3. Does anybody has a PDF?

      ReplyDelete
    64. I honestly think this story is overrated.

The plot is hardly a masterpiece, Nyx is a mary sue in pony form, the story is littered with many, many moments that make me wanna cringe and after reading it, I honestly felt I could've spent more time reading something better...like Elements of Gaming, Hoennshy, Rainbow Factory or any of the other pony fanfictions on my backlog.

This is my honest to Celestia opinion on this, it doesn't deserve it's popularity and I regret reading it.

      Good day

      ReplyDelete
    65. @BronifiedOtaku
Don't bother with Rainbow Factory; it sucks ass. I mean, I was reading it, and I literally had to skip about half of it just so I could reach the ending; it was that bad. And then the ending is so anti-climatic it's not even funny.

Also, I find it funny how you hated this story so much, claiming it wasted your time, and then you waste even more of your time to bitch about it in the comments. But whatevs, I'm not you, I don't honestly give a crap about how much you like or don't like this fic.

      ReplyDelete
    66. @Jonny Manz
I wasn't trying to bitch about this, I was just giving my opinion on it.

I just don't see why people like this story and Nyx so much, I mean haver her not only be the reincanation of Nightmare Moon in filly form but be the daughter of Twilight Sparkle...just really screams unoriginality to me.

But hey, you guys are entitled to like whatever you wanna like, I mean us Bronies ARE about love n tolerance after all.

Besides every fanfiction page needs at least ONE negative comment, I guess I should be that one negative comment.

      ReplyDelete
    67. @BronifiedOtaku
Fair enough; it's my personal opinion that Nyx rises above her Mary Sue-ness, and is a far better character for it. Haha, good point about the negativity, tho

    71. i just spent the last 13 hours reading this story without halt.... this is the best fan made story i have ever seen i cried and laughed. my heart sank for Nyx and i felt emotions that i normally never from other authors this single story has inspired me to want to help the ones less fortunate then me and i know the author of this majestically written piece of work probably wont see this but if the author ever dose.... thank you.

      ReplyDelete
    72. Normally, I tend to avoid fanfiction, or even detest it. But since I had heard good things about this one, I decided to check it out. In the end, I am very glad I did.

Everything this story tries to do, it achieves with flying colors. It was sad when it tried to be sad, heartwarming when it tried to be heartwarming, tense when it tried to be tense, funny when it tried to be funny (in particular, the scene with Trixie had me in tears). I really connected with the characters, felt everything they felt; like Twilight, I was worried for Nyx and wanted her to be safe. The characters were, overall, very true to canon, with a minor exception to Luna (though that would just be because she didn't really have any established canon personality at the time of writing) and the new characters were also quite interesting, especially Nyx, of course. The plot was compelling with plenty of twists and tense moments I found this story really hard to put down (I don't even remember the last time a school play had me on the edge of my seat). Easily one of the best stories I have ever had the pleasure of reading. I can barely even nitpick, it's just that good. I mean, there are a few pacing issues in later chapters and it can get a wee bit repetitive at times, but that's it. That is literally all I can think of to criticize this. I give it a solid 5 stars. It's an absolute must-read for any fan of the show, whether they're casual or a full-blown brony.

      Fantastic job, sir.

    73. Okay, so am I the only one who thinks this REALLY needs to get the legendary tag? I mean really. Freaking Fallout:Equestria has the tag for pete's sake. How this doesn't is beyond me.

      ReplyDelete
    74. @Runeplay2Agreed.

We need to tell Seth to tag this story as a legendary fanfic. My understanding of a fanfic achieving legendary is that when a good amount of people really love it and when there is greats works revolving around the story.

Seeing as how this is the case with Fallout Equestria (I gotta get to reading that!), Past Sins must be tagged legendary because of how much impact it has on the fandom just like Fallout Equestria.

Besides, I've been seeing more fanart of this story that is not yet on this post. And I mean a ton of more fanart.

We need to get more of this fanart/works and compile it into this post. There is actually a comic in development for this fanfic as it is.

Pen Stroke has achieved much heights thanks to this fanfic. Not only do I need to read more of his works (I read his Portal/Alan Wake crossover and both are excellent), but this is one of the few fanfics that should be tagged legendary.

I mean no hate against Fallout Equestria, but what are the classifications for a legendary tag anyway?

      ReplyDelete
    75. Dead serious. I'm tempted to reread this story since I no longer have college for the remaining month. I really want to recapture what I loved about the fanfic.

Nothing against the haters, but this story should also be tagged as fanon simply because of Nyx alone. As it is I don't think the fanon tag exists yet.

Also, shouldn't this story be tagged as season 1?

      ReplyDelete
    76. @Sleepingcobrox
There's a reason this isn't tagged season one. Pen Stroke and Batty Gloom have said that they are going to revise this story after season two ends in order to make it comply with new canon.

@People clamoring for the legendary tag:
FO:E had a few things going for it that this fic just doesn't have yet. The main one I see is that FO:E has a zillion side-stories set in its universe, while I've only seen a small handful of stories appear in this setting (and only one of them on EqD, namely Fandom Crisis).

Both fics get boatloads of fanart and a respectable amount of fanmusic, and the two fics are in the same tier of popularity above the rest. I figure it's just a matter of time before Past Sins claims the legendary tag itself, but I don't think it has everything it needs for that yet.

      ReplyDelete
    77. These authors should not be writing fanfics!
They should be writing amazing novels, making millions of dollars, and amazing stories that stay in your heart and mind forever, BEGGING hollywood to make them solid!
      Just my opinion
Best part of the whole thing?: Authors Luna matches up canonically in appearence with Nightmare Night Luna at the end.... MONTHS BEFORE THAT EPISODE AIRED!!!!

    78. I made it to chapter 11 before tears ran streams down my face, call me a crybaby if you want. But this book pulls at my heart strings, I hope to finish it tonight!

I don't need to finish reading this book to give it a 5/5 stars

      ReplyDelete
    79. This is an impressive piece of fan fiction. It's been a long time since I picked up a book, and at over 500 pages in a PDF file, this one seemed about that daunting. That I spent the past day and a half reading it and finding myself wanting to finish it is proof enough for me that it's a good story overall.

I do have one problem with it, and this is a GIGANTIC SPOILER for those of you reading these comments, so if you don't want to read a GIGANTIC SPOILER, gloss over this comment and go to the next until you've read the story.

Up until the abandonment scene, everything flowed nicely. I could quibble about things here and there, but quibbling is all it would be. All the actions and reactions, including the filly being labeled as a crybaby (and rightly so) by specific characters fit perfectly. Rarity, the play, the school, the bullies, the forest... everything was written and flowed well enough that I simply absorbed the story.

But the abandonment scene jarred me because it didn't make enough sense. Having read the entire story, I understand the reason for that pivotal scene. I also understand (after the fact) the logic of TS not being present in the event the filly was indeed the threat C feared and had to be destroyed/banished on the spot, as the spell was supposedly going to allow her to see. But for whatever reason, it just didn't click with me, and once I got to the point where TS was physically chasing C and the filly, I was jarred into stopping reading. Even going through the emotional conflict with her mentor and ruler, it didn't make enough sense that either the practical, sensible TS that we know and love, or the growing protective mother-like figure we are shown her growing to become, would have forced herself to stand aside like that. I kept waiting for the point in the conversation where she says, "No, I have to go with her. It will make this process easier if I go with her. This process will prove she is not a threat, so I want to go with her. Even if you have to chain me to the floor to prevent me stopping you from doing what you have to do because of what you see in the spell, I have to be there."

Once I moved past that point, again the story flowed nicely. Yes, there are things I could quibble about like before, but once I got past that scene, I was again in the mode of a reader absorbing a story. Nothing jarred me from stopping, and the story made sense and flowed nicely right to the end. But the abandonment scene was jarring and didn't click for me, while the rest of the story on both sides of that event was easy to absorb and kept me wanting to finish the story, which is why I bring it up.

This is definitely something to be proud of, and nothing I regret spending my time reading. Very impressive.

    80. What's that? Past Sins is on my Kindle?
      That's terrific news.

      ReplyDelete
    81. @nezudomo:
This scene was changed in all 3 versions of the story until now and I am sure that it will be changed again for the next rewrite. I personally like the first version the most (even if it is the most painful), but the current version is a good compromise between version 1 and version 2.
I think the easiest way for Princess Celestia would had been to just invite Twilight and Nynx to Canterlot, separate them inconspicuously (like inviting Twilight to a 4-eyes-talk), put Nynx to sleep, run the tests, re-union them and let them go home – but of course that would make the following chapters impossible ;-).

Manly tears were shed when Diamond Tiara had met with her Father again.

Here and there, at least once every chapter, I saw a few core words missing; like 'She', 'The' etc...But I also tend to forgot to write them when I am writing my own story.

The plot is well done, as I don't really expect what comes next after reading a few stanzas.

Chapter 18: Mare against Monsters bored me a little (emphasis on a little) but further on it is quite an exiting read!

    103. Can I just say how amazing and well written this is, not to mention emotionally straining, this story actually made me cry, and the only other times I have cried was for the first Pokemon movie and to the ending of Gran Tornino, this story is amazing in every way and I just had to sing its praises, this was the first fan fic I have read since becoming a brony and I love it and it has opened a whole new door to me, I hope the author reads this because they really deserve it. I read it in about 3 days, and I couldn't get enough, if there is ever a continuation of this... well, I can only hope there is. And I just wanna say thank you to the author again.

      Also, a review? One sec!

Past Sins is incredible really. A story not only with novel-like qualities, but with a novel-like plot.
Had this been marked (sad) or (grimdark) I wouldn't have read it. I'm a coward. The only Grimdark Fanfic I read was cupcakes. Only cause I heard it was like Happy tree friends. It was delicious!
      Anywho, back to topic!
Nyx, During revision 1, started out as a Mary sue. As much as I'd hate to break it to all of you, she was one. But then came revision 2. She Started showing flaws, Stopped being completely supported, and gained fridge brilliance.
      Being a crybaby.
Nyx completely contrasts with Nightmare moon this way, as Nightmare would never cry.
This is an example of a 'contrast', one I would expect to find in novels like "The Great Gatsby" or "Jane Eyre".
The final chapters, contrary to what some may say, were incredible. Seriously, I mean, that description of Nyx's dark side! And that trial! and the result, and Twilight's reaction!
One change I may note, Twilight develops from being a mom, who let her daughter get taken away, to being a mom who would DIE(!) for her daughter's sake. Yet more fringe brilliance!

      ReplyDelete
    105. This was truly the most wonderful story I have ever read coming out of the MLP fan base. I have a habit of becoming enthralled in storied that hook me. And I spent my entire Sunday, 12 and a half hours, reading this fiction from start to finish. I am left in awe at the entirety of this story, the beauty of its description and the plot. I would really love to see some short stories about Nyx's and Twilight's times together, or just Nyx's time in Ponyville. This is one of those stories where you created a bran new character that can not simply be left as she has. I was expecting the ending, and was beyond pleased to see it come to fruition. However, I am now left with an empty feeling that can only be filled with further stories involving this Alicorn Filly. Truly a masterpiece, I am beside myself. Amazing job, manly tears of joy, sadness, and pure exhilaration have been shed during the reading of this story.

I want to cry so bad it hurts but my dumb eyes will not comply.
Anyway this story tickled me in ways only a few other fan fics have been able to, the writing and the personalities of the characters were amazing, although some things are a little off at times like how the CMCs were so unfazed by Nyx's transformation into Nightmare moon.

      ReplyDelete
    113. I've spent the past few days reading this story obsessively.
I really can't describe in words how touching this story is. (Completely unmanly tears were shed)

    114. "MOMMY" almost made me lose it...Agreed with other comments. THIS NEED A SEQUEL!!!!

Okay let me give a useful review+commentary. Nyx is one of the most well rounded characters I have read. Lovable immediately. The authors had a really good idea of her character personality was because all of her actions were aligned with her character of Nyx/Nightmare Moon. The canon characters were shipped very well, especially Rarity I must say. IDK what Celestia was like prior to updates, but I think her actions within the fic were canon. On the whole, an excellent story with ups, downs, and a brilliant ending.

      ReplyDelete
    115. Nyx getting her cutie mark is probably my favorite part of any fanfic and, although it was inevitable, one of the greatest pleasures of reading Past Sins was seeing how the story built up to it.

    121. I just realized that, surprisingly, Season 2, including the finale could fit pretty well with Past Sins:
      WARNING, SPOILERS AHEAD

For example, Cadence is a third alicorn, yes, but is less powerful than celestia and is, in fact, normal pony sized, with fits with the fic explanation of how alicorns work.

Also, Nyx cutie mark seems to match with some other family members :) She has, after all, Twilight's blood :P (even if it's only a drop)

There were times I was "d'aww"ing, times I was wanting to punch Nexus to make him shut up, and times I was like "NO! NYX, IT'S NOT TOO LATE!"~

      I'm so glad it ended the way it did. I kinda want Nyx to be canon now ^_^;;

      ReplyDelete
    124. My Likes and Wishes for "Past Sins":

-I like that you provided a sympathetic view of Diamond Tiara in chapter 17. She and Silver Spoon are the default antagonists for any stories involving the Cutie Mark Crusaders, and it's easy to caricaturize them as heartless bullies. I enjoyed seeing a side of this filly's personality that did not involve teasing her classmates.

-I like the theme of "nature versus nurture" and how personal decisions triumph over our genetics and history. While Nyx is the reincarnation of Nightmare Moon, she realizes she can rise above the expectations of other ponies (be they her loyal cultists or her fearful subjects). I also enjoyed the message that nopony is inherently evil. Spell Nexus, the chief villain, is actually possessed by an influence beyond his control. In fact, one could say that Nexus is a tragic hero - one who sought to protect his fellow pony by confining the evil of the Nightmare scraps inside himself.

-I wish the story ended a little sooner. The climax, to me, was Nyx's confrontation with the "worst of herself", as personified by the dark cloud possessing Spell Nexus. Everything afterwards felt like an overly-long piece of Falling Action designed to sort out the character relationships.

I skimmed over the following points of the story:
-Luna's confrontation with Celestia (Chap 11). The sisters' conversation is overly long and recounts plot points we're already familiar with. The story so far had made me interested in Nyx, but it lacked that investment in Luna’s conflicts, and I felt little need to follow the drama between the royal sisters.

-The Battle for Ponyville (Chap 18). Too repetitive: Nyx fights alongside a main character, and then another, and another. These would be cool fight scenes in a movie, but without the visual "awe factor", it's just a repeat of the same premise over and over.

-Luna's Inquisition & Nyx's Recovery (Chap 20). Nyx has already redeemed herself in the eyes of the audience, but now the ponies have to be convinced. As with Chapter 18, there's too much repetition: Luna interviews one character, then another, and another. It's variations of the same theme: "we forgive Nyx". I think it would be more effective to send Luna off, have Nyx fret a while about what the alicorn might discover, and then have Luna return to summarize her findings.

-I wish the story could have acknowledged Nyx's cowardice in Chapter 18. On the one hoof, Nyx chooses not to perform any further evil as Nightmare Moon; on the other, she will not submit herself to judgement for her actions. Her refusal to release the Royal Sisters from their heavenly prisons is the supreme act of "having your cake and eating it too", and I wish that somepony had called her out for her hypocrisy. Nyx's self-imposed exile to the quarry castle is presented with an air of noble suffering, ("a single resident ... continued to haunt the halls like a restless spirit"), when it's really just the survival tactic of a frightened child who doesn't want to be punished by her parent.

A suggestion for future re-writes: Nyx immediately releases the alicorn sisters, and then goes into hiding in her castle. Her camouflage magic could be so potent that even Celestia cannot detect her presence. Perhaps, in the sisters' absence, monsters on all of Equestria's borders have been running rampant and the princesses have other towns to defend besides Ponyville, thus allowing for Nyx's redemption when she fights for her home town.

-I wish the Great and Powerful Trixie had received some foreshadowing prior to her entrance. It's a cute cameo but it needs the build-up, especially when Nyx realizes that she and her mother have some personal history with the boasting magician.

    127. This story... is incredible. I erally mean it. It's not the flat characters, the writing(that towards the end I have to say gets even worse)and...that ending,I have to say that this is an incredible fic: the perfect example of how Not to write pony fanfiction. Thank you Pen stroke, you taught me how not to write.

    128. Hi, I typically don't read fan fiction, but got interested in this one thanks to seeing it mentioned on TV Tropes. After that, I ended up spending pretty much every free moment completely immersed in it, and once I was done, devoured Pen Stroke's other stories with a feverish hunger.

It even inspired me to start an interactive starring Nyx, if anyone is interested. It isn't author-approved or anything, just a tribute to the best, most emotional fanfic I've read in years. I'm not a very fast writer, so please contribute if you'd like.

    130. While this is certainly one of my favorite MLP fanfics and one of the first I read-and I mean no offense by this- but I don't think it's, "The greatest story evar zomgzomgzomg". Just saiyan.
P.S.: This story actually made me stop acting like a heartless bastard. I mean, I'm a genocidal misanthropist, but before this, when something bad happened to a major character, I would go "OH NOOOOOO meh". Soooo. Thanks, Pen Stroke. Also, I'm going to start on the Season 2 revision.

    131. That latest comic.

      HAH XD

Very sweet. And it looks like Twi has her own biological daughter this time around? Who's the dad I wonder?

I guess I can sit down with them and listen to Twilight retell an old tale. She tells them the best.

    132. Is it worth re reading? Are there any major changes and or improvements?

      ReplyDelete
    133. @Ikusa GT Yes. It is worth a re-read. The most major change is that it was [CENSORED]'s [CENSORED] that [CENSORED] to [CENSORED] them out of the [CENSORED].

    134. I'd never read the original version, but when I saw "everything revised" I thought of the reviews I'd heard and figured "why not".

Boy am I glad I did.

What a fantastic work. Full of ups and down, moments that made me laugh and... consider the possibility of shedding manly tears. Ahem. My personal favourite part was Zecora's appeal to Nyx in chapter 18. Some brilliantly rhyming prose, somewhat reminiscent of Dr. Seuss in how the tempo fluctuates just so perfectly that it rolls off the tongue while setting off the "this is genius" alarms.

Yet, when I try to put the story into a box, nothing fits. There's no [Shipping], thank goodness, and while there are [Comedy] moments, that's not the focus. [Adventure] no way, and since nopony gets hurt, [Dark] is out too. Too much happens for [Slice of Life]. It's [Sad] in places, but every good tale has ups and downs, and that's the yang to the comedy's ying. That leaves [Normal], but this one is anything but. I therefore propose [Just read the damn thing already].
