• Bonus Portugese Ticket Master CD

Someone sent me this Megaupload of the Portuguese Ticket Master episode found on the bonus CD they were giving out a few months ago.  It's actually pretty well voiced! I was surprised! Though I admit, I'm not sure what a good Portuguese voice actor actually sounds like.

You can find it for download below if you are curious!

    1. Is it the same CD that contained the Dutch voices? Because I've been very curious to those, but I can't find a rip.

I am really curious. I don't know Portuguese at all so I probably wouldn't understant anything.

    4. Spike sounds like he's 25.

And RD sounds a lot more... Girly.

    6. Hate to sound like a parasprite here but...

Some of the voices just sound way off. Spike sounds too old, Rainbow Dash sounds too girly, and while Pinkie Pie's speaking voice is just right, her singing voice is just way too deep.

That being said, though, I'm reminded that this is produced for a much different culture, so as far as I know, this is what they would actually expect these characters to sound like. I will say they sound very expressive, which is always a plus in dubs.

    7. 10 seconds in and I know the Portuguese word for "no". :D

I love watching stuff like this in German just because it's a good learning tool.

Quick, someone still in high school see if they can get this into their curriculum.

Yeah, that is unfortunately true. I am from a portuguese speaking country and I can tell you that some of the voices don't really sound like they should, but I think that some are quite good (Rarity, Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie).

    9. As an american who speaks portuguese, this is hilariously weird. Pretty good dub though I think... sounds like every other portuguese dubbed show out there.

    10. Not to be hyper-critical of the foreign dubbing job, but...I actually thought this was kind of terrible.

I mean, maybe it's just the culture shock from the voices being so different than what I'm used to, but there's more to it than that. Part of what makes these characters so distinct is how fantastic a job the voice actors who play them do at infusing the characters' personalities into their voices. If you put me in a windowless room and played an audio clip of MLP: FiM for me, I could identify each and every character within a couple words just by the sound of their voice.

Conversely, every single voice in the dub was entirely interchangeable. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was a single voice actress doing every single voice for the main six. And even that one voice didn't work for any of them: Twilight sounds decent at times but just ditzy at most others, Rainbow Dash is too girly and not brash enough, Fluttershy doesn't sound shy, Pinkie sounds hyper but not to the extent that would make her the unforgettable character she is in our version, Rarity sounds more stuck-up than refined, and Applejack...dear God. Ninety-five percent of her appeal is her country sensibilities. Take that away, and you have nothing redeeming left. Everything she does is tinted with that Southern accent, and that Southern style is what makes her so charming. Obviously, that whole dialect wouldn't make to a kid living in Portugal, but...damnit, can't they at least try to get a regional equivalent that I can actually tell apart from the other characters?

And just in case the dead...tree hasn't been beaten enough yet, the singing is reminiscent of what my expectations for the singing in MLP: FiM were before I actually watched the show. As in, the songs aren't a happy, guilty pleasure as much as they are just annoying. I swear, whoever sang the theme song was either hungover or a very effeminate Portuguese man. I would ask Pinkie to save me, except there's no doubt at all that whoever sang her songs was indeed a very effeminate Portuguese man. So now I have to pass on that too.

Apologies for the rant, but...I'm tired and this was not what I wanted to see before I went to bed. My fault for downloading it, I suppose. I'll take my English version of the show eleven times out of ten.

    11. @Aquaman52 You haven't heard many foreign dubbings, have you? Of course the english will be better 100% of the time, but this is actually relatively good as far as foreign dubbings go.

Though it's weird that Applejack doesn't have any kind of accent, especially since in Brazil there's a huge redneck culture they could have used that is pretty much analogous to America's South.

    12. Dear Celestia, look at all that delicious tl;dr...

To summarize: disregard foreign dub, buy American.

    13. Fluttershy is the only one who I had the most problem with this dub.

She sounded a bit too loud here.

    14. @Anonymous

I've heard a couple. The difference in the other ones I've heard was that the foreign voices at least somewhat fit the personalities of the characters they were trying to portray. And I could actually pick out where one voice stopped and another one started.

Then again, I'm well-known for turning in what amount to blank sheets of paper for dictation assignments in my foreign language classes, so add an obligatory silent "disregard everything the idiot American who can't even begin to comprehend ferreign-speak says" to the end of all my posts.

    15. @Aquaman52 and the others who commented on it.

I am Brazilian (thus I speak Portuguese) and I mut say I'm really disappointed with what I hear on the video.

One must know how important it is to have the voices sounding right: it is part of the character itself! Most of it (Lets name Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash and singing Pinkie Pie for starters) simply doesn't fit! And I've already seen this whole cowgirl way of talking of Applejack in other dubs but not here. I must say it killed some of the uniqueness of those characters.

I could sit here ranting about it all day but I think our non-portuguese speakers here already checked it out (Thanks Batty Gloom and Aquaman52 again).
On a last note, I think if it keeps like that, there will be really few fans/bronies/whareveres over here, for it just sounds plain stupid (unlike other classics like Dexter's Laboratory, PPG, etc). I'm just happy to know fluent English but most here don't...

On a last last note: A fan dub made by a Portuguese person (it does sound different, but you catch it) sounds so better that I just want to burn up the file I just downloaded (but I won't, or I'll end up having a dvd with this "thing").

      I feel better now.

    16. For someone who doesn't speak a word of Portuguese, (aside from what I remember form high school Spanish. XD) this was pretty amusing.

    17. Truth to be told, this file popped out around way back then, in the comments of the "Portuguese subtitles" news (Ok, it probably wasn't this EXACT same file, but we're talking about the content here), but since we were all discussing it in portuguese I believe you guys might have missed it out (...And maybe we forgot to point it out to Sethisto. Our fault, I guess.)

It seems that this episode is contained in a bonus DVD that is being given as an extra along with some of the Friendship is Magic toys being sold around here in Brazil, or at least that is what I caught wind of. Anyhow, this is probably a taste of what we will get when the series arrive here in Brazil and... speaking of the quality of the dubbing itself... It is indeed rather subpar.

I believe most of the major problems have already been addressed by the people posting here. Most of the voices don't really suit their characters, there's a dangerous lack of accent on Applejack, the singing parts are all absolutely atrocious, the acting of most of the voice actors themselves sounds rather terrible... Overall, it was indeed pretty lacking. Which is a shame, for this will certainly not help the show to spread it's popularity around here. In fact, this level of quality may end up killing any chance of a healthy fanbase development.

I only hope that this was just a somewhat rushed job from the localization group to get the episode done, so that they could increase toy sales. I do hope they might to a better job when the series eventually arrive here in Brazil. Or that they may choose another more competent studio to handle the localization.

    18. Oh yeah, I almost forgot! The same person who provided us with the episode last time also posted a scan of the DVD cover. Nothing extraordinary, verily, but here it is, for those who might be interested:

    19. for mee......
i actually couldnt tell much of a difference between the voices for some of them.
though I think if anything they maybe shoulda swapper Fluttershy's and Rainbow Dash's voices.

    20. -Twilight Sparkle was OK, if a bit ditzy at parts
-Applejack without her accent sounded too plain
-Spike sounded too old, like a guy in his 30s
-Don't know what to say about Rainbow Dash, she didn't sound so girly as you make it to be, but it definitely wasn't perfect
-Pinkie Pie matched well, but her singing voice was too different and deep
      -No problems with Rarity's voice
-Nothing special about the other characters

      -Singing was horrible in general

    21. -Oh yeah, and Fluttershy is just WRONG

    22. The general rule with dubs is to disregard them and watch subbed.

      ReplyDelete
    23. @Spazturtle

I agree with you buddy but that's not gonna happen, if it gets released it is going to be dubbed only (in rare cases, depending on where it was released, we can use "sap" to hear it in original sound, but no subs), mainly because it's a cartoon show and not a movie.

    24. @Holy
Yeah, I think I found the fandub you were talking about, the LyralioRC one? THAT sounds amazing. Heck, if the official dubbing still sucks when the real episodes come along, we should get this girl and just rip the bgm from the English shows.

A fandub that's better than the official. Can you imagine? :D

    25. @Gent

Yeah, it is this one, I totally forgot to post the link to youtube. Good thing we have people working on this kinda stuff, just like the subs (.ass) that people were working a while ago, I wonder if those are still rolling...

      ReplyDelete
    26. @Holy

Yeah, I just went ahead and did a search on it and have just finished seeing it. It was far better than I hoped, but unfortunately it seems that the person doing these is not yet planning on doing more than just a couple short scenes, so no whole-episodes fandub projects at this point. which is most unfortunate.

Regarding the subs, Myke Greywolf is the man doing it, and he's still working at a steady pace doing the Portuguese (PT-PT) subs. But recently, I started a project of adapting his subs to Brazillian Portuguese, though I'm admitedly working at a much slower pace (I just recently finished episode 3). I will be making them available later, once I get a substantial batch to release.

Also, there is Snowflake, who is working on his own subbing project, which are being released on youtube (This is his channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/mlpfimbrasil), so you might want to check his work out as well.

      No!
That's what happens when a company receives a small fee to make the voice acting for "just a promo CD that comes with some toys". :(

    29. In the end, Brazilians (like me) are stuck to either know English or be like that.

...Or we can put our hope in the hand of a few helpful bronies and in the words of Fluttershy I scream "way to go".

This aponycalypse will never reach my country.

      ReplyDelete
    30. Is that the brazilian version? If it is, I've watched it. Twilight and Pinkie were spot on (except for the song), Spike a bit too old but OK, Rarity and AJ too young, RD and Fluttershy just... no.
