I talked to Chris at Q POP yesterday and here's what I know about the auctions:
They will be on eBay, most likely starting tomorrow or Wednesday. The plan is for a straight auction with $75 starting bid.
We're thinking 5-day auctions, with one start per day (so the first will end on Sunday, the second on Tuesday, and so on...)
We haven't yet talked about the order in which the sketches will be auctioned.
That's all I know at this point. I'll post as soon as I know more. If anybody has questions, I'll try to get answers.

We wanted to make sure that EVERYBODY has a chance to bid on these... no worries that the auctions are going to flash by before funds and/or will can be mustered.
The staggered end times will also mean that if you miss on one, you get a chance on a different one.

What we have here is Lauren Faust going meta. With her sketch of Derpy Hooves she has made a concept-style sketch inspired by fan art inspired by a background character in a series that started out as a series of her concept sketches. That just blows my mind.

I love Lauren Faust. She sells concept art of a character created after the show starts to air. And Pinkie Pie was going to be a pegasus. The consequences will never be the same...
It wouldn't surprise me if we see a new wave of Pinkie/Dash shipping fics with Pinkie growing wings somehow, lol.
Lauren is not stupid. She knows the fans of the show willing to shell out dump loads of cash for those drawings are the same ones who HNNNNNNGGGG- over Derpy.
Pinkie with wings... here's my take on it already.
The day celestia gave Pinkie wings, was the same day she got sealed for a three years by the vote of everyone in Ponyville, Canterlot and Fillydelphia.
Luna was the happiest filly alive after that, unfortunately the wings couldn't be removed once granted. And the world would never be the same as Pinkie Pie slowly took over the world with the power of flight.

I just did a quick goggle for Animation Museum, and found three in Japan. Then it dawned on me, what if we chip in, win it, then see if we could get one of the Animation Museums in Japan to permanently display it. See if we could get them to display it with a little plaque explaining the significance of Derpy and that we (the internets) won this through a Charity Auction for Japan and donated it to a Japanese Museum! That would be epic wouldn't it?

It's not Pinkie-with-wings it's a drawing of Surprise who was supposed to be one of the characters originally but got turned into Pinkie Pie.
