• Splitting is Probably a Bad Thing

We have 2 Pony focused chan boards.

    Ponychan
    and
    FiMchan

Ponies are once again OK on /co/.

I think it was kind of decided that both boards have different types of communities.

Ponychan was winning, but I don't think it matters anymore.  I personally was posting on FiMchan due to the faster speed/less errors, but I dug some really good content out of ponychan I haven't seen before.

If it ever happens again I can always remake the poll, but looking back it probably wasn't the best idea ever.  Anyway I'm off to work.

    1. Well. I honestly. don't visit the cahsn too often, but when I do. I normally go to co and b about equally.
Since the pony holocaust started, I found myself to be visiting ponychan more, though I honestly don't see a difference between those 2 but I think that we should be hanging out in pony chance since it was the first to be established, not that I'm saying that FiMchan is any worse.

But quite frankly, I think people should have the choice to go to either one, ya know? Its not exactly right to tell everyone to go to one specific chan.

    2. even if we lost the fight on /co/ there is still hope - plus the blog will always be a refuge for us

      stay safe blogbrony

    3. Tried to go to Ponychan, got an error that the board was at max users.

      score +1 for FiMchan

I'm just giving people some direction is all, I'm not saying you have to visit whatever one gets the most votes.

    5. i like FiM chan because it has a blue background instead of pink, i also heard ponychan was made by /b/

    6. Holy crap, it's about even right now.
Anyway Blog Pony, even though you link a bunch of crappy ship fics and pantie ponies.... over all you're doing us fans a good service.

Thanks for trying to corral the madness.

    7. I like the idea of this poll. There is nothing wrong with having two chans but it is good to see which will be fast and which will be slow.

My vote is for FiMchan. It seems to run a lot faster for me.

      ReplyDelete
    8. I just lurk both boards. Not much of a contributor anyway.

      ReplyDelete
    9. I prefer FiMchan, mainly because I happened upon it first; so I went to Ponychan for scientific evaluation. Some difficulty finding my way around, but that was probably my not being used to it. Unfortunately, there were several errors, front page talked of one, and I had trouble uploading images. Fimchan gets my vote.
      IMO.

    10. Good news! The Hitler mod has gone away. It's safe to post pony in /co/ again! MASS MIGRATE

      ReplyDelete
    11. Blog brony, you are awesome and we love you!

      ReplyDelete
    12. FIMchan runs better so 1 vote for FIMchan.

      ReplyDelete
    13. Ponychan is ahead. By 3 votes.

      3 votes.

What we need is the guys who run both chans to Join Up, connect both sites.

Anypony know how we would go about suggesting that?

      ReplyDelete
    14. Looks like Ponychan's getting all the /b/tards

Whereas FiMchan's getting the real bronies.

      My votes for FiMchan

    15. So... are ponies permanenty banned from /co/? That would probably lead to a stagnation of all things pony, seeing that there is pretty much no way fresh blood comes to the pony centered boards.

Oh well, 'twas fun for the time it lasted.

      ReplyDelete
    16. @Anonymous

Away for now. Plus the general image is still banned so the archive doesn't work.

      ReplyDelete
    17. @Anonymous

we have no idea if they are, it might be a rouge mod it might not be.

      ReplyDelete
    18. Both of them seem to have too many boards, with ponychan being the more confusing of the two.

      ReplyDelete
    19. fliter is apparently gone from /b/

      but its still on /co/....

      ReplyDelete
    20. fimchan has a /co/ style general thread even if its slower than the normal general. it just feels right.

      ReplyDelete
    21. Meh, I'm sticking with plus4chan.
Ponychan isn't really that interesting, although FiM-chan looks kinda better.

      ReplyDelete
    22. Perhaps we need something to focus the refugees, maybe, I don't know, an emergency friend off? On whichever board wins? (My vote is with FIMchan) I don't know, the topic could be...Springtime or something.

      ReplyDelete
    23. FIM chan seems to run smoother and faster.

      ReplyDelete
    24. i honestly don't like either really, fim if i had to but 4chan's back up to pony threads. mods are in check but don't go overboard in non cartoon forums people

      ReplyDelete
    25. The hitler mod may be gone, but my 14 day ban remains.

Truly hope my appeal goes through, but these things take time.

What we need is to link the two sites!

Do what we couldn't do on 4chan, and combine /b/ronies with /co/nies, to create /ponies/!

      ReplyDelete
    26. If any bans get lifted it will probably be awhile, they probably got deluged with appeals. That opening salvo of the ponycaust literally turned entire threads red with ban text

      ReplyDelete
    27. Neither chan seams very well organized or efficient.

      ReplyDelete
    28. terrible idea, don't split the bronies, we are nice and cozy here in equestriadaily and /co/ ktnxbai

      ReplyDelete
    29. FiMchan is a little better but I can lurk through either of them alright; both have stuff I enjoy.

      ReplyDelete
    30. Jackass mod is back. Just a heads up.
This time the reason for being b& was "ponies".

      Just "ponies".

      ReplyDelete
    31. @Anonymous

      "emergency friendoff"

We were supposed to have a Friendoff tomorrow anyway, being the last of the month. Looks like I'm the only one who remembered. Oh well, I've got my fic ready to go anyway, even if it's just a party of one.

      ReplyDelete
    32. Are you kidding? I thought he was gone!

      ReplyDelete
    33. I started out on Ponychan, but have moved on to FiMchan simply because the server for the first one has become so sluggish under the load.

      ReplyDelete
    34. Ponychan also seems to be run by an idiot, considering the message on the frontpage...

      ReplyDelete
    35. the word fliter is still up on /co/, even if the mod isn't around till its down we can't really go back.

    38. I think friend off's turned into holiday things tbh.

      ReplyDelete
    39. I'd run one but I have work in 3 hours and wont be able to effectively upload everyone's friend off material.. plus it helped a lot having /co/ threads dedicated to it

      ReplyDelete
    40. I prefer Ponychan. Way higher amounts of concentrated friendship. There's none of the /b/-faggotry around there anyways.

      ReplyDelete
    41. Who keeps voting for Ponychan? FIMchan is obviously much better.

      ReplyDelete
    42. I'm not particularly fond of either of them. I like the generals because they were a great mix of content, ideas, and discussions in one convenient location.

      ReplyDelete
    43. Ya'll do realize that the filter and the bans will be gone in a few days right? And even if they don't, you're not really going to give up that easy are you?

      ReplyDelete
    44. @Anonymous

LOL, I don't mean to sound paranoid, but I think that's the /b/tards trolling.

      ReplyDelete
    45. Dear god they're neck and neck.
      *grabs popcorn*

      ReplyDelete
    46. Fuck, just got banned for attempting to talk sense into a mod.

      ReplyDelete
    47. @Lucres
You can't reason someone out of something they didn't reason themselves into. This is clearly all emotional for them.

      ReplyDelete
    48. So now there's officially a site-wide ban on ponies, and attempting to talk to the mods about it is banworthy.

"They're not looking for feedback" is just another way of saying "We have no reasonable justification for this, and any discussion on the subject would prove it."

      Argh.

      ReplyDelete
    49. @Mads
On some level I knew that, but dammit if I'm not stupid enough to try anyway.

      ReplyDelete
    50. I don't see what everyone's problem with splitting is.

People have different ways they like to enjoy ponies. forcing them all into one place is NOT the best option. Find what you like and have fun. There is a LOT of us, you're going to find a lot of people no matter what.

      ReplyDelete
    51. I don't like to yell at you, Sethisto, but I do think this is a terrible idea. You seem to be feeding the idea that having two boards is bad and will cause "wars". I don't see the problem with it. Come to ponychan if you're more of the "warm, goody-goody happy friendship" type and go to FiMchan if you just wanna chill and talk about ponies. I've used both to a good extent but I overall prefer Ponychan, but I know it's not for everyone. There's no reason we need to argue or anything over it, and two boards for two slightly different trains of thought is totally fine in my opinion.

      ReplyDelete
    52. I have to agree... the idea of splitting a fan base into two different areas tends to cause problems. The great thing of having things all in one place is that you have a variate of people talking about stuff and giving different views on things, not to mention its just a hell of a lot more convenient.

As far as weather or not this will all blow over, at the end of the day we do know that this can still happen. It is probably a good idea to figure out a backup for when things like this happen (weather it's a permanent thing or not).

      -------------------------

When looking at the two different places we should be looking at a few different things...

1.) Capacity - Lets face it the community seems to be huge and probably is. Which site is more suited to handle all of the bronies that actually go to these places and not give an error due to too much traffic.

Honestly, if the fan basis is as large or bigger than I imagine it is then I doubt either site is ready for a mass migration to the boards...

2.) Rules of the boards. Knowing what is and isn't allowed on the boards should come into play when making this kind of decision. Choosing the site that fits most of the fan bases needs should be another priority when figuring out where you want to go.

To me this choice should be made for whats best for everyone not just what works for you. The thing about a community is that though they may have their own needs and wants, the best way for that community is to work together. Alone we can only do so much but as a group we can get much more done for the benefit of everyone.

3.) Dependability - How are the mods like and how do they deal with things? You need to feel as though your voice is important, will be heard, and wont be ridiculed can banned (within reason, I'm putting this into a more civilized context). Which of the two has better policies on this and which is less likely to pull the same kind of stunt 4chan is doing now with ponies in general?
      ------------------------

In the end it all is up to the community to where they want to go. I think its a good idea to have this poll and have my full support. Knowing where more traffic is/will be is a good thing to think about for any draw friend/wright friend/whatever else there is so they know where to post what they make. To most artists that I know, we make things for other people to enjoy and with that we want to know where most of the audience is to show everyone. (I'm new to the whole fan base thing. Usually kept to myself for the most part.)

In no way am I saying that everyone should cram themselves into one area just on the word of a few people. It's that kind of mentality that causes these kinds of problems in truth.

In essence this blog in itself acts like a center point to all the madness. With that in essence the fandom isn't separating fully, we will still come here in the end of it all. As long as we don't start having feuds between the boards it should be all good.

As far as the suggestion of the friendoff thing... Unless I read it wrong it sounded like you want people to take sides and have a friendly competition to unite the community. To me that sounds counterproductive... I understand the intention but I'm sure that that kind of separation isn't what is needed nor wanted.

Overall in the end of it all all we can do is wait and see what happens. I have a feeling this will all blow over and things will go back to normal, but I still cant help but think that it may be a good idea to get a grounding of the "what if" in case this happens again.

      ReplyDelete
    53. I haven't really used either of the chans in question. I pretty much stayed on /b/ and occasionally /co/ before today. FiMchan has impressed me somewhat more than Ponychan, though. It seems faster, and I like the blue color. So I voted for that, and that'll probably be where I get my pony fix from now on.

I see no reason why the two chans can't coexist, however. Especially if they kinda embody different approaches to the show. If I do end up on FiMchan, I certainly won't hate Ponychan...they're still my bronies, after all!

      ReplyDelete
    54. I'm currently lurking on both. It'd be awesome if they'd combine forces. :>

      ReplyDelete
    55. @Anonymous

Friendoffs aren't competitions. The last Friendoff was arguably the high point of the brony community.

      ReplyDelete
    56. @Anonymous

Ah, ok thanks for that clarification.

      ReplyDelete
    57. Are ponychan and fimchan warring?

They appear to be two very different types of community. I don't see a problem with them being separate.

      ReplyDelete
    58. fimchan and ponychan should have some kind of a merge so we have a single place to come together.

      ReplyDelete
    59. FiMchan has a better artwork board
      Ponychan has better discussions
Equestria Daily is where I go for all my fiction

      >mfw I had to go from one website for ponies to THREE

Seriously though, both can exist at the EXACT SAME TIME.

Blog pony! Just make a note or sticky or link to both at the top of the blog at all times. Both these sites are better than 4chan anyway.

      ReplyDelete
    60. I like FiMchan better, but I've been browsing Ponychan a little bit too.
Mostly been raging at how all the mods banned a crap ton of people, instead of just making a Pony board.
      Bull. Shit.

      ReplyDelete
    61. Ponychan mod here, I'd just like to confirm that we've outgrown our current host, and are currently discussion possible solutions.

      ReplyDelete
    62. @Ponychan mod

I love your site and you guys are awesome and a perfect companion site to FIMchan.
Keep up the good work and I hope you find a solution.

      ReplyDelete
    63. I'm not sure if I want to have two different boards. I like having equestriadaily as the main headquarters, but I don't want to have to choose between ponychan and FiMchan. Is there some way of merging them? I realize the ponychan admin is attempting to increase the capacity, but until it is increased, I will have to go to FiMchan. I know we'll figure something out.

      ReplyDelete
    64. Who says we can't have options?
why do we need ONE pony related chan to go to?
They each have their strengths, and their weaknesses, and everypony should be allowed to post in either one they choose, or (gasp!) BOTH.

      ReplyDelete
    65. meh, I don't exactly like going on ponychan or FiMchan, it's too friendly and it just doesn't feel right.

      ReplyDelete
    66. @bubsAKAvermin

      >It's too friendly
      >fan of MLP: FRIENDSHIP is magic

I don't even fucking know. BUT i do agree, both seem almost OVERTLY friendly but I'd rather have this than constant bullshit.

      ReplyDelete
    67. @Anonymous

True, but at least the friendliness feels genuine.

      ReplyDelete
    68. I've been reading this and a bunch of pony threads and I'd like to suggest something to help alleviate the apparent concern about "splitting" the community or the community migrating off 4chan. I must admit that I am not a 4chan user and thanks to this blog, Ponibooru and DeviantArt I get more than my fill of ponies. This may not hold true for everypony, but I thought I'd offer it. Anyway..

I have maintained websites for going on fifteen years now and I think one thing content providers such as myself can do to help keep ponies organized is to provide a better paper trail to find our work. I've noticed I'm one of the only artists to sign her work and provide a link to find more; it's not nepotism, it's honestly been my experience that success and recognition grow from setting rules and following them. I will post all of my pony art on my DA account. It's not perfect, but it's helpful. I will continue to identify said art as mine with a signature and provide a link. No matter where that art goes from there, it has a "launching pad".

I think the visual artists contributing to the FiM fan base are sort of all over the place; I can't tell you how often I'll find an unattributed image file on Ponibooru or here on this site only to locate the artist weeks later through DeviantArt. A little bit of extra care and throughness on our part could help everypony in the long term; has every FiM artist uploaded all of their FiM art to a single central location? I don't know, and since I don't follow 4chan, I can't tell. Sethisto is doing a great job collecting this stuff but I'm amazed that I can still go to obscure corners of the internet and find Madmax artwork I've never seen before.

So this is my plea to artists and writers: CENTRALIZE. Choose a place besides 4chan or FiMchan or Ponychan or even this site where all your art may be found and make sure it's all there, in one place, neatly organized. There's no reason there can't be four or five "community centers"; it's entirely normal for any community, the problem is that this community didn't exist six months ago and we're exploding out everywhere and causing trouble for ourselves. There doesn't need to be mass, group action so much as individual accountability here.
