• Mods Finally Respond to MLP Bannings

Apologies to those of you who have no clue wtf is going on, but for the 70% that do, it looks like the mods have finally given us...something to chew on.

Apparently they were getting piles of complains about mlp avatars and crap.  Why people are so offended about this when right below said avatars is fatfurs and goatse, I will never understand.

    Apparently cute is just scary.

    More stuff from the IRC

Apparently it's pony avatars they want to get rid of.  Now who could possibly be guilty of that! *ducks*

    6. Idiots are everywhere. Even among us MLP fans are some it seems.
I mean why is it so hard for some people to stay in one general thread?
I think everyone who makes a new pony related thread, while there is already a running General going on should be banned.

And even when someone accidentaly makes another thread he should at least delete it after he realized it.

    7. lol this is too much, everybody getting mad. seems people are quick to abandon friendship and tolerance when nudged. a shame really but it may be for the best if people migrate to one of those new image boards

    8. For what an outsider's perspective is worth, my condolences to all of you. I hope that sense is restored soon, or at least that you can find a reasonable alternative for yourselves as quickly as possible. Always remember that a community can persist anywhere so long as it wants to remain.

Still, this sucks. It isn't right what they're doing to you.

    9. Best thing any brony can do is put together a well-thought-out, respectful email to moot letting him know that a mod has banned discussion of a cartoon on the Comics & Cartoons board. This mod's overstepped his authority.

Ahem, Parasprites make all those extra threads to piss everyone off you know, because we like something they don't like.

My problem is that I discovered MLP on /co/, and it's where I spent all my time talking about it. I know there are other sites, but it stings like hell to get kicked out of a place you felt at home.

      ReplyDelete
    13. We never had a problem with people using avatars (Recently, anyway), we were doing the best we could to keep it in one thread, and banning the people on /co/ for the actions of the /b/ crowd (Why if you're going after us for the same thing every day there you don't crack down on all the other repeat threads I don't know) and the idiots/trolls that post on other boards is just stupid. Really, it seems like just a wall of flak put up when they lack an actual reason. Then the mod made the troll comment and left. Real good moderation 4chan has these days, huh? (Looking at /tg/ as well)

    14. I don't know if linking to proxies here is the best idea but whatever.

Either way, we know now how much it buttpains people who use sites like SA and 4chan to see something cute that causes people to be friendly, when they've based so much time and energy around forming themselves into heartless goblins who feast on the horrid and despicable. It's too much for them, but we shan't let that cause us to dissipate even slightly.

Yeah, making MLP an insta-ban on every other board would probably work. Keeps it to /co/ and maybe /b/. Then you'd just need to figure out how to deal with people not getting the General system.

Believe me, I understand how much it sucks to suddenly feel unwelcome in the place you called your home. It's a feeling I wouldn't wish on anyone to any degree for any reason.

I just wanted to offer some positive reinforcement amid feelings of despondency, because no idea will ever die if there is but one person who will stand up for it. And I hope that thought helps make something very crappy feel a little less bad.

      ReplyDelete
    25. "Offended", lol. Considering some of the stuff I've seen come out of 4chan, I have a hard time imagine them getting offended by anything at all. In any case, there's better discussion on the show to be had elsewhere.

Ok, so basically right now they're trying to cut down on the number of MLP posts and trolls by banning everything and then later allowing it again? That sounds surprisingly intelligent for 4chan's mods, even if it is a dickish enough method for it to be them.

    34. There is, admittedly, a problem with the pony threads - there's so many people posting in them that when one hits a cap, two or three threads are created to replace it by accident. Damn near always one is chosen to host the MLP General image, and the others are deleted or fall off page zero. At worst, it would be a minor inconvenience, if it weren't for another factor in play.

The real problem is there are those opposed to pony threads that have been screencapped as saying that they have been performing a constant false-flag campaign of creating new pony threads and bumping the extraneous ones in order to rile up the average /co/mrade and to try to get ponythreads banned altogether. And damn it, it's worked.

We've got either a big group of haters or one extremely dedicated hater. Ask any /d/eviant about the dedicated futanari-thread bumper that for months was so prolific that no non-futanari thread survived for more than a few hours at the outside, and you'll know how much damage one person with way too much time on their hands can do. This group or individual have been spamming pony threads in and outside /co/ to drum up ill-feeling. And when they were effective - and they have been horribly effective, as right now I and countless others are banned from 4chan because I posted the word 'pony' - we did their work by them by raising a shitstorm. I ain't pointing fingers, my first reaction was to shitstorm it up a little and I would have if I hadn't been clumsy enough to run into the wordfilter first thing. Fact of the matter is, the haters (trolls, parasprites, call them what you will) have won this battle.

So, wat do, as the age-old question goes. We can migrate (to FiMchan? To Ponychan? To beg sanctuary from the SA ponyfans who are in the same boat? Google the Paradox of Buridan's Ass for a graphic example of why our multitude of choices is going to cause us serious damage if something isn't done) but the threads on /co/ weren't just a place for us to meet and discuss, it was an advertisement. "There is a show that many of us like", it said, smack bang in the middle of the most receptive crowd possible for a cartoon. To migrate to a specialized *chan will cut off a large portion of our new blood, as the earlier poll on Equestria Daily advertised - from memory, the majority of us came from /co/ or /b/.

We can throw ourselves on moot's mercy, but as much as I love the guy, he's not got the best turnaround on these issues. Not all that long ago, /tg/ was tormented by a janitor that deleted threads literally at random for months before the constant appeals to him bore fruit.

This is the point where I really wish I could succinctly sum up all of the above with an elegant solution, but I've got no fucking idea where to go from here. Barring unforeseen consequences, I can all-too-easily see the fanbase being split between Ponychan, FiMchan, and those still holding out for the dick of a mod on /co/ to relent, and divided we shall fall to drama and stagnation. I salute our beloved Blogbrony for trying to intervene with his latest poll, but they're completely neck-and-neck. Something needs to be done, and Celestia help me, I've got no clue what that 'something' is.

      ReplyDelete
    36. @Anonymous

I feel bad for the people who can't bypass bans though. I was banned three fucking times for replying to the mod in the meta-thread. They weren't even troll replies either.

Man he was mad as hell.

      ReplyDelete
    37. Horsefeathers. I don't know what was happening on the rest of 4chan, but it's no excuse for the /co/ bans, people discussing a cartoon on the cartoon board.

      ReplyDelete
    38. Completely migrating is an option, but it wont help any when absolutely no new blood is added to the mix.

Ponies are this big because 4chan is big. Most of us are converts just from seeing the threads all the time.

      ReplyDelete
    39. Yeah, just read through the thread. I hope Phrix is right cause this is retarded beyond imagination.

      ReplyDelete
    40. @Mads

"Avataring" on 4chan means posting with the same image or character every time. This annoys a lot of people, as those images (Each thread is limited to 150 images) could be put to better use than one person's need to express themselves using images.

      ReplyDelete
    41. @Mads

<----That twilight sparkle is an avatar.

On 4chan, everyone is anonymous, with a few using names and tripcodes to set themselves apart.

Others use avatars, pictures of twilight sparkle for example with various facial expressions that relate to the post.

      ReplyDelete
    42. @Mads

It means using the picture of a specific character everytime you post. Its hated because it takes up image spaces in threads and doesn't contribute anything new. It's considered a form of spam.

THE PROBLEM IS... this was going on in /b/ and not /co/. This is why the ban in /co/ is absolutely retarded because it's the backlash of a mod who probably doesn't spend much time in /co/ as much as he does in /b/ or other boards.

      ReplyDelete
    43. I'm not going to go anywhere. As long as there are free proxies I'll keep on posting. Not avaretarding, not furry bullshiting, not spamming, just discussion.

They will have to learn to deal with it.

    46. I wasn't much of lurker/poster last two weeks but I don't remember much avataring in pony threads. Maybe occasional GREAT AND POWERFUL TRIXIE but that's it.

      ReplyDelete
    47. @Sethisto

Do reaction images count as avataring too? I don´t remember seeing to much people using the same character all the time.
It´s not that I have a problem with that.
      ----

Also I´m wondering if the image limit of 150 is changeable. When 4chan depends on it´s community why do they want to limit it so much? They should be happy that there is a new show with a huge fanbase who are heading to /co/. I don´t care for 4chan. I only came her for the ponies. And I will leave with the ponies, when the show is over and nothing new comes.

      ReplyDelete
    48. @Anonymous

It's unclear if reaction images will be effected by this. I think most of us have at least 200mb of pony at this point in reaction images alone, so that will be a huge blow.

It is changable, but moot has never given a fuck about losing people. He doesn't have to at this point. 3000 pony fans is barely a scratch on 4chan's numbers.

      ReplyDelete
    49. ... What's wrong with posting reaction images from My Little Pony on ANY board?
      That argument is just retarded.

      ReplyDelete
    50. @Anonymous

      @Somepony

Okay, thanks. So how is this different from reactionfaces or posting Celestia pictures while being lolmagichitler?

Also, can you believe I've been on 4chan for years and never noticed this?

      ReplyDelete
    51. But moot believes in free speech, this is all the work of one butthurt mod.

      ReplyDelete
    52. I don't see whats so hard about hiding threads. if /co/ didn't want to see our pony threads they could just hide them.

      ReplyDelete
    53. One big site is one big target which leaves people at the mercy of the few who can drop just drop an anvil on you with very little disregards for your feelings and forget you exist at all.

Putting eggs in one basket works fine, but if you want to carry more your going to need a second basket...

      ReplyDelete
    54. @Anonymous
Not everyone can hide a thread.

      ReplyDelete
    55. Avatars? That's bullshit of the highest order. I've spent an unwholesome amount of time in ponythreads on /co/ and the closest I've seen to any avatarfaggotry is reaction images and a bit of brief roleplaying - and if reaction images get banned, that's half of goddamn 4chan gone. Maybe it's been done in /b/, but a hell of a lot of questionable shit goes down in /b/, and why would what happens there affect what happens in /co/?

It smacks of justification after the fact. The mod went in half-cocked and fortnight-banned anyone posting about ponies and then scrambled for a reason when other mods raised eyebrows, and now, as illustrated by that conversation with 'ALTERNATIVE', our complaints are going to be met with 'well you shouldn't have been using avatars then'.

      It's bloody infuriating.

      ReplyDelete
    56. @Sethisto - 4chan may have been a driving force in the growth of the MLP fandom thus far, but it's by far not the only one. Your own polling indicated that, and this is just one of many fan sites out there. So, migrating the core of MLP fans away from 4chan wouldn't create a lack of "new blood". In fact, it'd likely boost numbers, if the atmosphere were right, because 4chan is definitely not a site that's welcoming to new members. I, for one, would never have gotten involved in any pony-related fandom stuff if it were confined to 4chan, you couldn't pay me to spend time on that site (nothing personal, it's just not the sort of place I have any desire to spend time on, in any board)

      ReplyDelete
    57. I kind of see a little justification on what's going on. The community is spreading like parasprites and despite our best efforts, we honestly can't keep it completely contained to one thread. Trolls capitalize on the confusion to make it worse, and the mods cannot tell when it is the community getting out of control or when it is trolling. They can tell that when it spreads to /v/ and /a/ and for some reason /fit/ and that is definitely evidence that the community can't contain itself. /b/ is hardly random when there are pony threads full of tripcode users and avataring.

basically put, like it or not, we are somewhat at fault here. The mods needed to put a stop to all of this just to figure out what they are going to do.

I wouldn't be opposed to a script that by some means won't allow a pony thread to be made if the general image is in place. even better if it deletes flagged threads when a general image shows up.

also, we really ought to stop flooding the boards in protest. Show the mods that we really don't mean to be annoying. We do pride ourselves in our civility, at least I think we used to.

      ReplyDelete
    58. An additional bit of explanation http://images.4chan.org/co/src/1298843591122.png

      @Rainbowdosh
Mods go to /b/ more than /co/, so they judge from what they see there. The /b/ threads were entirely worthless.

      ReplyDelete
    59. 4chan may've sparked the fandom, but that wretched hive of scum and villainy is no longer required to keep it going. There are other communities people can go to, at this point.

      ReplyDelete
    60. @Adrian Brony

An apologist stance won't help anything. /b/ avatarfaggotry is just /b/ being /b/, and the only reason shit going down on /b/ is at all relevant is because the mod responsible wants an excuse for what he's already done. And the cross-board spread and the threads without the general image (excluding the few accidental simultaneous threads made) *are* trolls that did this deliberately. There's been almost as many anti-MLP metathreads as there has been MLP General threads, and after the initial tactic of 'spam them with gore and fetish' they decided on false-flag operations to fuck us over.

Oh, and by the way? The 'flooding the board in protest'? Seeing how many of us got caught in the Ponycaust, I'd be willing to bet cash money that the people doing so are the pony-haters cementing their victory by making the mass-banning seem justified. And now we're supposed to take the rap for that too? Bugger that.

      ReplyDelete
    61. basically people in /b/ avatarfagged all the time, mods go to /b/ more then /co/, they assumed we do it in /co/ as well.

luckily according to Alternative this will probably not be premanent but we will have to try harder to keep it in one thread.

      ReplyDelete
    62. What are the avatars people are talking about?

      ReplyDelete
    63. I'm used to actual message boards, in which avatars are used almost without exception. Personally, I don't quite get the big deal over this stuff; but I assume it's just 4chan being stupid, per usual.

When even the mods are trolls (apparently), better to just leave.

God damn it if people keep saying this I think I'm going to burst a blood vessel. WE DO KEEP IT IN ONE GODDAMN THREAD. The ones creating threads all over the goddamn place are the ones who want to get MLP banned. Getting the wordfilters and bans lifted on the condition that we 'keep it to one thread' is utterly ridiculous because all it would take is one guy with a proxy and a handful of pony images to get it banned again.

    86. /b/ is supposed to be a place where people can express an interest in things that they cannot usually express their interest in without some form of consequence. Now matter how one looks at it, society firmly believes that anyone over the age of 18 watching and enjoying a cartoon meant for children without a child watching it with them is weird, unclean, and potentially dangerous. Society wishes everyone's last ounce of innocence and child at heart to be completely dead. The unexpected demographic in MLP illustrates a large-scale struggle against society's beliefs, and it is so easily labelled a demographic of freaks, paedophiles, and social outcasts.

These self same individuals who bear these labels from society at one point or another discover /b/, and there they find a place where they can exist without giving two shits about society. When ponies came along, it awoke the ounce of innocence and childish nature remaining in a vast amount of anons, which led to a huge fanbase growing exponentially each week.

One would think that such a large group of anons, who are now more so labelled as misfits in society, would be more than welcome to a place like /b/, many anons believed this, as did I. However, after the past events over the mere span of 24 hours, I have come to realise that society exists in /b/, it has infiltrated and corrupted the purpose of /b/, and turned it into yet another place for rejection and ridicule. I never believed in there being a 'cancer' that was killing /b/, but after seeing society rear its ugly head, and wreck the most innocent and cutest thing to ever exist on /b/, I now believe in the 'cancer', and I know what the cancer is.

For a long time now, /b/ has been tainted, and today, I call its death. The cancer was never the latest scandal involving /b/, it was never the GET threads, the trap threads, it wasn't even the Alice threads. It was society influencing people's opinions in the one place where society should not matter.

/b/ is dead. But the heart of innocence and childishness continues to live on, and I hope it continues to.

I used to only be involved in this because I liked the show, but seeing these events unfold has made me open my eyes to see things I couldn't see beforehand. I'll always be a fan of the show, and everything around it, nothing has changed there, and never will.

I guess this is more of a farewell to /b/, as I'm never going to return to that cesspool of ingrates ever again. God forbid that my different attitude would conflict with their internet tough guy egos, and my posts deny them of some magical number that bears no real magic whatsoever. Friendship IS magic, that is all.

Considering the nebulous reasons for all the bans, it does seem like the avatar thing is being used as a scapegoat/slapdash justification. (then again I can't really say much, since I almost never post anywhere on 4chan)

Now I'm just hoping all the fandom infighting will die down eventually...

      Yup.

We got banned for something practiced on 4chan for quite some time now.

      It's not a reason.
      It's an excuse.
