I liked this episode. In fact, I'd rate it quite high. The arrogance of RD made me grin and the dramatic irony was fun. The way in which each character lent themselves to the events was, IMO, well-crafted. The dam scene was definitely my favourite.
Also the baby was adorable.
The bit at the end was also fun. For some reason, it reminded me of the bits in Hot Fuzz when Simon Pegg was chasing the cloaked murder(s). But, y'know, people have differing tastes and haters gonna hate. It's cool that people like it and don't like it, but I'd rather they not shout each other down over the internet. It ruins comment sections.
PS: Despite what people think, Scootaloo dind't "betray" RD. She did want her role model to come with her to the event after all.
Although, the number of accidents in a short space of time was weird. I interpreted it as the wrath of the pony gods on a universe that hasn't any Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy or Applejack focused episodes this season.
That's what I'm talking about right there. You are being arrogant and looking down on me and you can't even realize it. Or maybe you think it's nice to tell people who they are isn't good enough for you and that you have it all figured out and have the best viewpoint on all things and if only the whole of the earth would be convinced to follow it then the seas would abound with fishes and the heavens would open up to turn the fucking deserts to fertile plains.
I'm jealous, but not quite spiteful enough to be glad you don't have originals. I've only owned a handful of production artwork from projects that I wasn't personally working on, but I do love that kind of thing. (Unfortunately I lost pretty much all of my possessions a few years ago in a storage disaster, so even those are gone.)
You're very kind to offer to share your collection, and perhaps someday when you're settled I may take you up on it. Good luck with the move in the meantime!
Loved the episode, as with the rest of the Season 2 episodes. There hasn't been one that I didn't like..and frankly, I don't think there will be.
Simply because I enjoy the show for what it is. I'm not gonna go and tear apart a children's show for it's flaws, that's just silly. "Hey guys! I hated that episode of Rugrats because Tommy totally should of pulled out his screwdriver quicker!"
General thoughts, this episode was written to solve Dash Arrogance problem, hopefully this will lead into another episode later in the series, like how Look Before you Sleep set up the situation for Sisterhooves Social. Considering how Pinkie Sense returned in this episode, hopefully Dash will learn to be less Arrogant from now on as well.
That said, Dash cannot hold an episode just by communicating with herself, she works best when she has over characters to bounce of (Though that's the case with everyone, they only work if it's a breakdown episode it seems) have more characters to work with, it would have been fun to maybe have a scene of just her and spike at one point.
Also general idea, don't do two episodes in a row with the same character being the spotlight, Showstoppers wasn't liked because it was two Crusaders episodes in a row. This is probably the same case. Most people want to see more of the other characters now.
I've found that bronies are actually harsher than other internet communities in their own right because they are more passive aggressive and hypocritical than any other fanbase I've ever seen... then again, I stick around because I love the show, the art, the music, so much good stuff.
You're quite welcome! It wouldn't be a trouble at all, provided I could find them of course. You may need to remind me though, as my mind can be like a sieve at times, and recently even more than usual... ah well.
Oh and thank you for the well-wishes too; it will certainly be nice to be settled again.
I was about to post a lengthy explanation of what parts of the episode I didn't like and why I think it's the nadir of season 2...and then Saddlesoap just had to jump in here and make the episode SUDDENLY AWESOME with that comments.
Well played, mysterious Internet stranger. Well played.
I hoped it was going to be princess luna after seeing the horn and wings, but as soon as RD started chasinge her through town it was pretty obvious who it was
@b493fe1e-184f-11e1-90f6-000bcdcb8a73 If being a nihilist and a hipster is so awesome, why are you watching a show that's so determinedly positive and sincere?
I saw the ending coming a mile away. The episode had more superhero cliches than I could count. Rainbow Dash is an egomanic who will never learn her lesson.
It is for these reasons that I... absolutely loved the episode. Why so serious people?
Remember that lesson we all learned back in "Boast Busters," about how foolish pride is annoying? Yeah. That lesson this week. Only with me, Rainbow Dash.
Blah-blah-blah... Man, Twilight makes this look so easy.
I'm coming to see a real overlap in how MLP fandom and Doctor Who fandom act after every new episode. The "rate the episode" polls on Gallifrey Base always have a steady group of people there to cry out "It's all rubbish!" and that the show has definitely gone downhill since (INSERT FAVORITE ACTOR OR PRODUCER HERE) left.
To those saying Scootaloo changed loyalties on Dash, remember that Scootaloo still thought of Dash when no one else did. :)
I'd like to point out that MLP:FIM stories have always been on the predictable side, even since Season 1--it's the ride that's the most fun! I know this is still surprising for some of us, but episodes are still written for little girls, for who these plots may be entirely new. :)
If you check it out carefully, all that bickering comes from the same four or five people. I you remove those comments all you have left is just your run of the mill episode discussion. People loving it, people hating it, people being neutral about it. Nothing else.
@DJB123 My natural inclination is towards cynicism and pessimism; I've decided I'd rather try to be positive and hopeful. That's one reason I love MLP:FiM so much; it helps me develop a more positive outlook. If you want to remain the way you are, that's find, just don't feel like you have to. As messed up as this world is, there's always something good to focus on in yourself and in others.
It Twilight, Applejack,Pinkie pie ,Fluttershy, and they are all the misterys mares. Rarity is the one who made the outfits and that what I know any who think I am wrong say it.
On predictability: recall a certain filmmaker whose movies relied heavily upon the big twist at the end. The first two movies he made were really good, but as time went on, it was apparent he became so focused on the twist that he kinda sorta forgot to make the rest of the movie worth watching, too. So predictability doesn't always factor into whether a given thing is good or not.
I personally liked this one. The plot wasn't stupid, it was simply a reaction to RD getting UNBEARABLY obnoxious.
I also liked the BTAS references like the signs. I missed the music reference though. But I can name another.
The whole "it was multiple people taking turns" thing reminded me of the Batman animated TV movie "Mystery of the Batwoman", where the mysterious Batwoman turned out to be three different women working together and alternating in the costume.
i srsly think most of these negative comments are from parasprites. I understand that not everybody is going to like the episode, but really now? saying that FIM is dying is just paraspriting.
I tend to agree. I don't really like dash and I wasn't a big fan of this episode personally, but I've still enjoyed lots of the SE2 eps and I'm going to keep on watching.
I'm afraid I have to join the haters this week, just because this was so out of character.
Rainbow Dash was able to take a hint about her vainglory in Boast Busters, which handled the whole issue better. But I can live with retconning that for a good pony episode.
What I can't pass off is how her friends reacted. A large-scale practical joke, I can see. But a scheme to make RD envious and look bad in comparison? Deliberately rubbing salt in the wounds and laughing at her in the Sugarcube Corner scene? And gentle Fluttershy is in on this too? I'd give a fanfiction that did this 1 star.
The focus on RD's frustration and sadness is out-of-character for the series as well. We normally see ponies have problems, but even Lesson Zero and Party of One showed them being adorable and silly at the same time, and the resolutions were beautiful. This episode was a far cry from the bright and cheerful show that brought me to a fan site.
Ah well, HUB showed the Discord 2-parter afterwards to cleanse the palate. Delicious.
@WhiteDiamonds Yes, the construction site and the hydroelectric dam seemed out of place in what's been established as a mostly pre-electricity society; I honestly don't know why it didn't bother me more in this episode, but I just shrugged it off. So long as it's not the beginning of a pattern...
And I have to say I also consider the 1990s Batman series as one of the best animated shows of all time, possibly the best period; I've got some photocopies of model sheets from TaleSpin, so I can imagine how nice it would be to have similar memorabilia from Batman.
Rainbow Dash can't save bad episodes. Last three have been worse and worse--Cutie Pox wasn't at the bottom of my list, but Best Pet was, and is now replace by Mare-do-well. Which is a little sad, because RD is my fav pony.
A lot of little things bothered me with this one, many of which already mentioned by others:
1-Ponyville is now the most dangerous place ever
2-RD is being too big-headed, even for RD. This turns her into a caricature and a tool for the purpose of punching you in the face with a moral, rather than a character.
3-Cranes? Hydro-electric dams? Um, yeah.
4-This is related to number one, and also unavoidable considering what the writer was wanting to do with the episode, but all the calamities that required rescuing felt out of place. I think it would have been better if RD had done something breath-takingly heroic at the start, and just let her ego feed off praise she received for that the whole episode while her friends figured out how to deal with it and get RD to understand how it was affecting her relationships with her friends.
5-The method RD's friends take to fixing the problem seems a bit out of character for them, and its execution in the writing hid them from the audience even though it would have been better imo to see more of them and their problem-solving efforts than to see pouty RD.
6-Littler things. Like how the RD fan club seemed a little too big, or why in a town with ponies like Twilight and Applejack that such a dangerous road exists.
None of those things in isolation ruined the episode for me, but taken all together puts it firmly in my least favorite camp.
Though, I spose after that I could mention a few positive things: -Scootaloo was great, and her heading an RD fanclub was nice -The secret identity wasn't as kick-you-in-the-face-we're-not-even-writing-for-children-anymore-it's-so-obvious as the winner for Best Pet. Not as good as sisterhooves tho. -RD wasn't abusing animals this time.
All the background ponies!!!! Need.... Fanart.... HHHNNNGGGGHHH <3 <3 <3 Oh man this episode was AWESOME. Very predictable, yes, but super cute and fun ^^
Also I can't help but notice that there have been a lot more male ponies included in recent episodes. Maybe the female to male ratio isn't as big a difference as we may have originally thought! Hmmm
Okay, first off, where are you Bronies with jetpacks getting them?! Me Gusta, send me the manufacturers name =)
On the episode: I don't think it was too heavy handed, I think it was funny as hell and well done. Alot of bronies are, to me, losing sight of the fact that this is a CARTOON and not everything introduced *even in canon* is going to come back, ever, and not all of it has to make complete sense with some sort of giant overall mood and history of equestria. *deep breath*
That having been said, I have always disliked RDs massive EGO even if it is mostly justified cuz she's awesome- it was nice to see her get a wakeup slap. The higher-tech stuff was a little out of place, but who cares? they needed more things falling or in danger of falling ro drive the plot (no pun intended). YES, ponyville suddenly seems super-dangerous, but it is obviously a mechanism to add some excitement to an episode that would otherwise be dominated by RDs verbal masturbation.
I believe many people would live longer and enjoy things more if they could step back from their -often biased and immediate- opinions and just appreciate things for the good elements. Mysterious mare-do-well gets 6/10 from me, not nearly as good as Lesson 0 or Sisterhooves or Best Pet (which were all stellar) but still a decent episode from the best cartoon to be created in a long time.
Some people simply take the show far to serious. Just like how most of the fanfiction is, which relies heavily on background stuff. This is a cartoon afterall!
Ponyville might be a small village where a dam and a construction site feels out of place, but it's still reasonable enough for a cartoon show like this. It's a less serious episode like Feeling Pinkie Keen. But FPK is one of my favourite ones! And the Construction workers worked in Cloudsdale already. They should've been considered "out of place" here too. But they didn't.
Also Dash's friends showed her that heroes who don't brag are easily more famous than Dash. Isn't this what they wanted to do? And Dash was bragging in plenty of episodes before. She just went a bit farther here and her friends pointed it out to her.
If the show was more realistic then it would be really boring.
Cranes, prams and hydroelectric dams, meh. They did kind of break the setting for me - like the bowling alley in cutie pox, and rarity's parents... everything about them.
They could have had a nice dangerous building site without diesel cranes and all that modernity. Humans were building large buildings for literally thousands of years before such things came along, so you didn't *need* the modern equipment to create the peril.
Prams, well, maybe. Pony foals are on their feet not long after being born in real life, but presumably not these ponies, with their big human-sized brains, that probably forces a helpless babyhood in them the same way it does for us. So I guess I can buy the pram.
The hydroelectric dam though? I got nothing. We got RD sticking her hoof in a dyk--- oh i'm sorry, i'll go scrub my brain with a wire brush for that one. It doesn't follow, they just don't use that much electricity.
Or are we going to see them watching TV next? Ugh. I mean, I've been wibbling about fridges for a while, but it was kind of believable that only specialised places like Sugarcube Corner would have that kind of equipment, until we saw one in Rarity's kitchen. :-(
I did like the show, i'm not hatin' here, but it feels like the setting is starting to slip. S1 did this stuff too, but it seemed less so, and when it happened, it was more excusable by the Rule of Funny. Now it's starting to feel off.
I don't see why some people are disliking this episode! You're all probablly just sore because they didn't make it a Scootaloo, or Trixie, or Derpy episode. We all knew in the backs of our heads that it wasn't gonna be Derpy or Trixie because they'd have to make it a Trixie/Derpy-centric episode develop their personality, and that wasn't happening when The Mysterious Mare Do Well didn't show up until well into 9:20! Nearly 1/5th of the show was done! It should've been obvious the was the Mane 6 when Twilight, Pinkie and AJ all started complaining about Rainbow Dash's egoisms. You all complain that it was predictable from the beginning, but yet again, what episode doesn't have a predictable lesson? We all know how they end, I mean, really? Who didn't see Tank being the pet? Who didn't see Discord being defeated by the Mane 6? As good old Pinkie Pie would say, "Well, duh!" I think you're all just being sore because your waifus aren't the centric episodes. It was a good episode. Much better than The Cutie Pox and the Sisterhooves Social.
Coming on the heels of May the Best Pet Win was a hard act to follow, but this episode was a worthy successor. Very much over the top like most of the new season, and better for it, if you ask me.
Definitely one of the funniest, if not the funniest, episodes of the series. I laughed through almost the entire episode. The gags were a mile a minute, and the superhero parody was overdone to heroic proportions.
After just one viewing, this is already one of my favorite episodes, and it has some serious competition for that honor (Sonic Rainboom, Cutie Mark Chronicles, Best Night Ever, anyone?).
If this is what the new production team has to offer, then SIGN ME UP, BABY, because I am all into this!
Actually while I was watching the episode I was enjoying every minute of it. OTOH I've only seen it twice, which is about half what's been normal by this time so far this season. And that was just once for the youtube as quick as possible and once for the 1080 version. So while I laughed and enjoyed while i watched it, i haven't felt pulled back to it like the others so far this season. Which I guess is a metric.
And actually, so far this season, I think Sisterhooves Social is actually my favourite - rarity's parents aside - which surprised me as i would've thought luna eclipsed would be. But viewing counts don't lie...
I'm not about to write off the whole show like some above - this one's still better than several from S1 - Over A Barrel comes quickly to mind (though the "i'd like to be a tree" scene remains brilliant in isolation). So it's nothing new for the show to have the odd episode that doesn't really do it. Certainly no reason to think it's all downhill from here.
I liked the episode, but it is not my favorite. Simple enough.
I also don't feel Scootaloo turned on Rainbow Dash. Everypony was excited about the new hero, and Scoots just wanted to bring her favorite pony to the big celebration. Scoots was just oblivious as to the fact that Rainbow was having a personal crisis over thinking ponies didn't think she was awesome anymore. She might have interpreted Scoot's actions as a betrayal, but it was in fact genuine loyalty defined! Dash just couldn't see it.
Nyan Dash and Batman style posters were super win!
Also, EVERY FANFIC that has ever had the ubiquitous cliff with a point overlooking Ponyville... NOW CANON! LOL! Villains can now look over Ponyville savoring the moment they enact their devious plans, and lovers can go up there for the view and share in a private moment, and they can all do so in the COMFORT that it's all canon now! yay
I will admit, Mane 5 working to deflate RD's over inflated ego is fitting, but two things... I would have preferred Trixie, trying to redeem herself with deeds. That would have been cool. She knows that she made a fool of herself before, and her life was devastated. She lost her home, business, and reputation in a single moment. If it leveled her, and gave her the drive to better her real skills, I could have seen such a thing. I'm sad that the only major redemption was Luna. Friendship was not magic for Trixie or Gilda. They need saving episodes.
Second, I am VERY disappoint that they took the last moments of the episode for a stupid prank/joke, and sacrificed the REAL letter the the princess to do it. WHAT were they thinking! RD needs to learn her lesson, hardcore... and they pretty much skipped it! And for what, a stupid Spike is RD's ghostwriter, scared by a ghost prank? Lame joke cost use a genuine letter. I am NOT happy with that. It's the only part of the episode that actually made me dissatisfied. I gasped (or maybe guffawed) when the credits came up! Seriously!
What were they thinking!
Otherwise, I liked the episode. It was good, but not the best.
no, wait, I *don't* buy the prams. They're *ponies*. They have *excellent* backs for carrying things, and they don't have hands to make pushing a pram around make any sense at all.
They even have saddles, though they seem to be nonfunctional fashion accessories, but it would be an obvious thing to rig up a saddle/cradle thing for foals small enough to not be on their feet yet. That totally makes sense. And even easier for them to do (once they solved the making-and-putting-on-of-saddles bit, which they have) than it is for human mothers to carry their infants around for the millions of years they did so before prams were invented.
You made me laugh out loud. You even made me spell out LOL. All my internets, I'd say you won them, but I had to give them all to The Hub last week, and I'm still trying to catch up on my replenishing of them since my cable modem broke last Wednesday.
It's possible to take a negative lesson from this episode: that it's okay to keep secrets from and manipulate a friend so long as it's for what you consider to be their own good.
Mare Do Well was realised brilliantly though, and there's going to be some excellent iconography out of that. Never heard of darkwing duck before today, but frankly, from a quick google image search, i think it's another thing that's better with ponies. I was reminded more of V (for Vendetta) in the shapes of the *rest* of the costume, not, obviously, the mask.
I thought this episode was all right. I did think that they overused the accidents. That was way too many. I don't think that the other ponies were trying to humiliate Rainbow Dash. I think that they were trying to show her how a hero was supposed to behave and how much better people treated her.
OK, loved the Darkwing Duck and B:TAS shoutouts with the costume and music.
As for the episode overall? Not the best, but decent enough. I felt they could have played up RD's ego a little less, but that's just me. I could see the ending as soon as the wings and horn started appearing and disappearing, but I liked it anyway. The moral was slightly heavy-handed and RD could have used a little more build-up to her change of heart. Spike as ghostwriter was nice, the RD fanclub was hilarious (what happens to it now, anyway? Or to all the Mare-do-Well merchandising?).
Overall, I'd give it a 6.5-7 out of 10. RD never has the best episodes, but they're OK.
So many of the fandom keep losing sight of the fact that the show doesn't have a resolute continuity. This is an intentional mandate from Hasbro so they can use it as a marketing tool where need be without worrying about continuity.
Just accept the fact that there will be constant contradiction, disregardances of continuity, out of place elements, low level redefinitions of character, and reconfigurations of background characters.
None of these things should be strongly affecting your enjoyment of the show as they are just a fact of life.
As for this episode specifically I found that while it's not my favorite episode or RD moment it was a very fun and slightly surreal little adventure with a pleasantly different and original take on Ponyville life.
You see, I LIKE the randomness and disregard for continuity. Keeps things fresh and lets the writers be creative compared to a series with restrictive continuity.
I'm happy that Pinkie Sense is back, and Twilight pulling off quite the magic trick pleases me as well.
That being said, I start to notice why I'm not enjoying the second season as much as I did the first one... It feels like the characters are "restarted" over and over again. The lessons the characters are learning now seem a bit redundant with what they already know.
Man, reading over some of these makes me wonder how many of us actually read what is said before and how many just crank out responses. Ha, even my previous comment I now see as too preachy. I think 'Haters gonna hate' sums it all up, im gonna go watch the episode again.
The ending was pretty obvious (once it was shown that the mare had magic AND could fly) but I thought it was a really fun episode. There was a lot of fun animation (like when RD was in the water) and hilarious facial expressions and I tend to like eps where Rainbow Dash has to learn humility. Also, did the score, esp when RD is chasing the mare at the end of the ep, remind anyone of the B:tAS theme?
I have to admit, I'm shocked at how anti tech people are. We've seen:
•lamps •refrigerators •stoves •motorized kitchen mixer •switch operated lighting •DJ turntable •spotlighting •fans •megaphones •microphone and speaker systems •laboratory equipment that appears to be an EEG machine •and maybe other stuff I'm missing.
To top it all off, the majority of this is from season 1.
I see one simple thing here... Blinders. People notice a big thing like a dam and have a fit, but forget the little details from last season where all these things existed that would NEED a power source. You see one cutesie wootsie retro oil lamp, and instead of saying, oh, how quaint, that pony likes to use an old style oil lamp, you instead think... WAIT! why are other ponies using electricity! NOOOOOOO!!! That's totally not canon or allowed! Come on people! Open your eyes to all those little details that you missed last season and stop your tech whining. At least their power is green.
It's also entirely possible that Ponyville is not fully electrified, or that they may use unicorn magic to distribute the energy as well, hence no power lines. Still, as a unicorn, would you want to not only enchant a device to function, but power it from your own pool of energy. This makes perfect sense to me.
I'm going to say that Prams have existed since The Ticket Master, although in that one time it was used for a Benny Hill Chase sequence. So yeah...
Honestly how this episode is going to turn out will depend on how they write Rainbow Dash from now on, if she continues to be arrogant, then this episode will feel like a complete waste. But if she learns and stops being arrogant, then it's probably going to do better since this was the changing point episode. Hopefully she is going to be less arrogant in Future Episodes from now on.
Also, Mare Do Well is going to stay. No way is this fandom going to let that awesome design go to waste. Would be cool if Mare Do Well is in a future episode as well, maybe one where everyone in Ponyville is dressed up as Mare Do Well to beat a bad guy.
My headcanon: the events of this episode chronologically happened just after the Return of the Harmony and all incidents were the result of the last traces of Discord's chaos energies slowly dissipating from Ponyville.
I know! An insult like that would have resulted in a challenge to a duel in the old days!
Really, if someone accused ME of liking "Twilight", I'd have no choice but to kill them slowly, chop up their bodies, and make them into cupcakes! It's a matter of honor.
I started watching MLP:FiM because it is fun and entertaining. So far, it is still fun and entertaining. A lot of us are taking this fandom a way bit too serious.
I'm reading the comments now and I'm surprised that people didn't like this one! Maybe it's just because I'll watch anything with capes but Personally, I loved all the superhero cliches (and how Ponyville suddenly became super dangerous --"What, suddenly there are no natural disasters?")
Idk, maybe people were disappointed because was pf the hype? I don't go to EqDaily or any other pony sites much anymore so I never go into an episode expecting anything. It's funny that people seem to think there's been a decline in writing --I've seen no noticeable difference. In fact, this episode had pretty clever, self-aware writing. "Awesome is overplayed!" Let the backlash begin, I guess...? I mean, it's a KID'S SHOW. It's pretty hard to mess up a kid's show.
It's good and I can't find any problem with this episode. Although RD really acted like a jerk, but at least the message to convey people about stop boasting and being an attention seeker is expressed clearly. Still, I'm sticking to Lesson Zero as my favorite best episode in season 2.
1. Ponies Shouldn't Have Technology (X), It Makes No Sense for Ponies!
None of their technology makes any sense for ponies, you doof. All technology in the world was built by and for *humans*: bidepal creatures with highly dextrous appendages, manipulative digits, and a nervous system well-suited to tool use.
A world built by and for ponies would be completely different in every single way. Imagining it is beyond most writers, and it would certainly just be confusing to the target audience of the show. Get over it.
2. Ponies Shouldn't Have Technology (X), It's an Anachronism!
Here's a crazy thought: maybe a podunk town like Ponyville isn't the gold-standard for global technology levels in Equestria? Yes, there are still steam trains and horse(lol)-drawn carriages in places like Ponyville and Apploosa. Guess what? There are places in Wyoming that don't have Cable TV, and places in Africa that don't have running water or an electrical grid.
Manehattan existing suggests that there are probably places in Equestria where there's a more advanced standard of living, where they construct large buildings and probably have a lot of modern infrastructure.
The main reason you don't see more technology in Canterlot is because they have an abundance of magic. As Twilight noted in Winter Wrap-Up, they have enough magic there to do just about anything, so they don't need a lot of technological infrastructure. Places where predominantly earth ponies live aren't so lucky.
3. The Mysterious Mare-Do-Well is Best Pony!
Finally, everyone (except Rainbow Dash fans) can agree on a single best pony!
My only complaint is that I think it would have been better if Rainbow Dash had joined the others and become one of the Mare-Do-Wells. That would have shown she'd learned her lesson and have brought it back around to the friendship/harmony theme.
Also: I think we all know the real breach of canon from this episode is the fact that Rainbow Dash is literate. I can only imagine her letter to the Princess is full of plot-holes and spelling errors.
As soon as I saw AJ stop the carriage I knew where this was going. This episode didn't really do it for me it was good to have some RBD character development.
But I feel as though people are expecting TOO much from this series. Remember it's intended age group.
@richfiles Speaking just for myself, the problem is exactly that the anachronistic elements in this episode were "big thing(s)". Lauren Faust mentioned wanting the show's setting to be without electricity. Smaller items, like refrigerators, fans, even speaker systems, can be handwaved (hoofwaved?) away by saying they're powered by magic, but a dam can't be, and while the construction site isn't entirely anachronistic to the show's setting, a 7-story building is the sort of thing that you'd expect in Manehattan, not a small town like Ponyville.
It's not going to ruin my enjoyment of the series if they continue to introduce more modern technology into the series, but it will be a jarring tone shift. While TV sets and video games are fine for the fan-made comics, I'm not certain I'd want them in the show.
I should really stop reading these comments. I tell myself that every week, but I always get curious and come back anyway, against my better judgment.
I want to know what other people thought; I want to know if they noticed the same things I noticed, or if they noticed things I missed; I want to know which moments are catching on as memes; I want to see some thoughtful discussion and interpretation. And all of that is in here, but to get to it I have to wade through so much bullshit, and I always, always leave in a worse mood than I came in.
I know I shouldn't let a few parasprites get to me, and I apologize to the rest of you who aren't acting like completely horrible people; I'm sorry for contributing to the negativity in here by posting this. I just felt like I needed to vent a little bit about it. :\
I had written up some direct responses, but decided it was better not to stick my nose in that fire. I don't know any of you personally, and I don't know what you might be going through right now. But...but I'm going through a rough time too, and I come here to get away from that and feel a little happier for a while. And then I come in and I see this stuff...
I'm just feeling disillusioned about a lot of things right now.
Loved the episode, though. It lifted me up out of my funk for a little while, at least.
A long time ago Lauren Faust wrote, "We don't hammer logic too hard on this show."
Incongruous technology, props and settings are there to serve the plot and/or gags. There's precious little screen time to spend (or waste) on explaining them away. Fans commenting here are taking these things way more seriously than the show's creators are. Get a little perspective; it's a light-hearted children's cartoon that occasionally feels profound. this just wasn't one of those occasions.
Urgh. Great. I thought I was going to get out of here without sticking my nose in where it doesn't belong and saying something I'll regret later, but I'm just not strong enough.
I just don't think that's funny. People shouldn't use things like "Go read Twilight!" as an insult, and people shouldn't take it as an insult either. There shouldn't be anything wrong with liking Twilight. People like different things, you know? Saying or implying horrible things about somebody just for liking a certain work of fiction is. Not. Cool.
I get ruffled about this stuff because I can never tell how serious people are about the things they say about Twilight fans, and they say some pretty nasty things. I'm not a fan myself, but my mom is. Nobody likes to have their mother insulted, you know?
I liked this episode, even though Mare-do-well doesn't exactly roll of the tongue. Maybe Twilight got the mayor to help her out building up the new hero.
It was predictable, but remember it is a kid's show, and there have been plenty of predictable eps before:
- Pilot: was there any doubt twi would make friends with these ponies? - Ticket Master: all the ponies got tickets, not surprising at all. - Applebuck season: stubborn applejack fails and has to ask for help after all; did see that one comin'. - Dragonshy: fluttershy faced her fear, NO WAI! - Over a Barrel: can't we all just get along? of course we can, they all made friends and ate some pie (no not pinkie pie, that's just gross). - Owl's well: new challenger saves old stalwart's life and they become friends and it turns out the new guy actually didn't wanna get rid of the old guy. - May the best pet win: a race, involving a turtle/tortoise. really, did any of the others stand a chance? never challenge a tortoise, they'll f**k you up.
FiM, just like a lot of kid's shows, will be predictable to adults sometimes, deal with it. We fell in love with the show regardless. This isn't an Agatha Christie story, plot twists or meandering plots tend not to make good kid's TV.
In order for Rainbow Dash to redeem herself in my eyes, she needs to become AN hero rather than be A hero. And while they're at it, the rest of the mane cast should proabably do that too. Especially Twilight, AJ, and Pinkie.
I was about to say that, Jon. I knew from the moment everypony was getting on RD's case that they were doing the Mare Do Well bit to teach her a lesson. But by the end of Act 2, it really felt like they were taking the gag too far. I would've had the five own up what they did to RD, and then like you said have RD play the Mare Do Well in the last scene, for good closure.
I liked the episode. Lots of new background ponies. And the action scenes were very well staged.
First time watching episode same day. I'm in the "kinda disappointed" camp. It wasn't terrible, but ponies as construction/architects felt really out of place. I'd rather have a "don't ask, don't tell" policy when it comes to how things were built. Ponies make terrible carpenters.
RD freaking at the prospect of being alone conforms to a personal feeling of mine; she is very insecure, and has been since the beginning. The big ego and everything is just a front, and I've always felt she is very afraid of not being good enough.
While watching, Twilight as Mare was my first thought, in the interest of teaching Dash a lesson. When Fluttershy went by, it was clear to me that it was a group effort. All in all, the episode just felt a bit rushed, trying to get everything in. Even Pinkie being Pinkie felt a little out of place, as if they just had to cram it in there. Toning down the catastrophe might've eased up on that feeling, maybe.
All in all, felt it wasn't quite as spectacular as the rest of the season has been. But nothing too terrible.
@Epesi I feel like I'm partly responsible for this, riffing on the original comment like I did. I meant for my reply to be nothing more than a silly joke; while I have no fondness for the Twilight books or movies, I don't want to insult anyone for liking them. It does seem like my comment's been taken more seriously than I meant, though, and I'm sorry if it aggravated your disillusionment with this comment thread.
As a peace offering, I'll mention that I love Laff-A-Lympics, and invite Twilight fans to insult me over that appalling lapse in taste.
For some reason, I just realized that I've never seen the ponies wash their hooves before eating. They walk around outside on their front hooves and then use them to shovel food in their mouths, or stick them in each other's mouths. If I were a germophobe I probably wouldn't be able to watch the show anymore.
Yeah, one thing I've learned is that you can still have a perfectly fine episode with a predictable plot. To all the people who "hated" this episode and the last one, try watching them again. You know how you can re-watch most episodes and still enjoy them? I mean, you know everything that's going to happen, so by their logic it should be impossible to enjoy it, but they're still funny and a great watch. I'll admit that my first impression of both these episodes were not high at all, but then I re-watched them, and I noticed how awesome the song was in the last episode, how funny some of the jokes and references were, etc. etc.
And with the tech stuff, rule of funny. When I saw that dam, I literally just laghed and said out loud to myself, "Wow, they have a dam now? Okay, lol." And yeah, they had skyscrapers and such in Manehattan, how do you think they were built? And all the electronic devices? yeah, there's a bit of Schizo tech, but that just allows for more jokes and such without needing to establish a full list of available technologies. This isn't Star Trek, no matter how specific you wanna get on certain things, although I guess I'll admit that this might end up just as popular...
1 - These rotating hatefests for each new episode crack me up. Only ep I didn't like was Sisterhooves and that's just because I'm a only child. Apparently I have moar Love & Tolerance! for this show than any of you. :p
2 - Equestria was always Schizo Tech imho. That said, do we see any of the utility lines necessary for a power grid? No, we just see power capacitors and the like. So either they've perfected wireless energy transfer (100+ years away IRL, unless you live the alternate universe where Tesla didn't go broke), or the Dam gathers energy for some other esoteric, non-household purpose. Complex machines powered by magic tech are already canon so whatever @ the construction equipment. Can't hire Unicorns for everything.
3 - MST3K Mantra.
4 - How the hell can you blame the order they're showing the episodes in for *anything*? Hasbro obviously acquiesced to showing Lesson Zero immediately after Discord and not doing anything stupid like a Halloween episode in May, but past that, the ordering has been pure iTunes shuffle.
5 - "The ending was obvious!" Its a childrens show. You want shocking plot twists, epic suspense, and deep thought provoking dialouge? Watch Breaking Bad.
BLASPHEMY, SEASON ONE WAS UTTER PERFECTION AND THE PEAK OF HUMAN FICTION AND THESE SEASON TWO ABOMINATIONS SULLY SEASON ONE'S GOOD NAME! lolololololololol
@b493fe1e-184f-11e1-90f6-000bcdcb8a73 Now that I've had "an hero" explained to me, I've got to ask again: Why did you start watching this show in the first place?
And this isn't sarcasm or passive-aggressive insulting, I'm genuinely curious. You prize your nihilism, cynicism, and snarky sense of humor, yet you praise season 1 of a genuinely positive, sincere, heartwarming cartoon; why?
I can't say I understand the hate coming from some of the haters today.
Yes, the technology was a bit surprising, but when we first saw Vinyl with a turntable, what do you think powered that? Or the lights at the same fashion show? Or Sugarcube Corner's oven? Or the smoke detector in Rarity's home? Gotta give the ponies props for having renewable, clean energy though...hydroelectric FTW. Even better than wind or solar, and made a good plot device.
I was kept on my toes personally about who Mare-Do-Well was. I was thinking it was Pinkie until the dam scene, then Twilight until the wings were seen. I think it was a clever little scheme that hit the point straight to home. RD is my fav pony but (like me) she takes her awesomeness straight to the moon sometimes and then...well, here you go. A simple talk about how much of a bitch she was being obviously wasn't going to work. I think the rest of the Mane Six drove home a hard and good lesson.
Commentary aside, this episode had me laughing so hard I almost cried (after a lot of "WTF!" at the TV screen!). A huge improvement from last week's episode. Season 2 has been pretty good so far! :D
When that kid supposedly killed himself over a lost iPod, 4chan /b/tards were prank calling the kid's grieving parents and snapping photos of ipods mockingly placed on his grave.
I'm not knocking fans who obsess over details ala Star Trek enthusiasts. While I don't let the small stuff bother me, I do love the show myself and understand the impulse to make our visions of the world fit together in a nice, tidy package. Especially the OCD sufferers among us, who are legion. ;-)
Just like knowing the combination to Captain Kirk's safe, there's a certain cool factor in knowing the tiniest of details about Equestria and our little ponies, and a satisfaction all its own which comes from that.
But just like anything, if it gets to the point that it is making you unhappy, it goes from being benign to hurtful. When that happens, take a few steps back, take a few breaths, look at the big picture and marvel at the incredible stroke of luck that we have been gifted with a show which no one could have ever expected to come from the MLP franchise. A show that would have been unthinkable for almost any of us to consider watching just a little over a year ago.
I'm also a fan of the Golden Age of Animation, and think this excellent series carries on in that grand tradition. But I think even the most diehard Looney Toons fans would probably think it silly to get upset because Bugs Bunny held a carrot in his left hand one episode and his right hand the next.
Do as thou wilt shall be the whole of the law, but if you're missing the fun in this episode or any other, give it another shot and give yourself permission to enjoy it for what it is, not resent what it is not. Why?
So is AppleDash now canon? Just look at the AJ's expression after RD says: "Hey Applejack, how'd you like to be immortalized as my friend?" and the flash goes off.
The episode was fine in my opinion. Not my favorite by any stretch, but I didn't get the same annoyances as everybody else. There are a few issues with it yes. For instance, Rainbow Dash wasn't playing off against other prominent characters enough, thereby the comedy was lacking. Also I would've wanted a letter in the end, but we can't have everything.
The technology-isn't-following-the-canon bull I think is insane. Another comment has already mentioned the fact that electrical equipment DOES exists. Lab equipment, DJ mixer table etc. IT'S THE MAGICAL LAND OF EQUESTRIA for pete's sake (and it's a kids cartoon), does it really have to follow a certain -well thought out- canon? Stop the hate I say.
@dosed I looked; I see a pony who desperately does not want her photo taken with Rainbow Dash. How, exactly, does that support Appledash shipping, much less make it canon?
@salesman173 Sorry I mentioned that having a hydroelectric power dam and a 7-story building seemed out of place in Ponyville. I didn't realize I was hating the show or saying it was ruined.
I liked this better after two viewings, but on the whole, I'd have to say that in my not-so-humble opinion this was the weakest episode of Season 2.
Ponies talking to themselves just cannot carry an episode. It only worked in Party of One because Pinkamena was essentially a separate character from Pinkie.
I'm also starting to get really worried that RD is being badly flanderized. If it somehow can be shown later on that she's learned her lesson, great, I love character development (it's one reason why Rarity is a much better character than some give her credit for - better than Fluttershy and Pinkie, imo). Mattatatta's post about the scene on the storm cloud covered that well. But if not...gah. I don't mind at all that Dash can be arrogant, egotistical, lazy, and underachieving - the fact that she has those flaws is part of what endears her to me. If you'll excuse me making inappropriate literary comparisons, it's almost Byronic hero-like. But making that the entirety of her character is not the way to go. Dashie is my 1a favorite and I do not want to see that happen.
The transition from her blushing sort-of humbleness (fricking adorable) to where she was in the middle felt right, everything after that taking things past the point they should have stopped.
I loved that the rest of the Mane Six turned out to be behind the MMDW (it may be predictable, but who cares?), but the aesop accompanying it is one of those shaky ones that can turned really ugly if you look at it from a certain perspective (I've always laughed at the people who got all saddlesore over Feeling Pinkie Keen's moral, but it's got the same issue). Dash needed to be taken down a peg in this one, but I'm not sure that systematically upstaging her in every possible manner, rubbing salt in the wounds, destroying her self-confidence, and then telling her it was for her own good was necessarily the best way to go about that.
That said, every show tosses out clunkers from time to time, and even then, this was by no means a bad episode. It just doesn't match the admittedly very high bar set by Lesson Zero/May The Best Pet Win/Return of Harmony Pt. II.
Things I did love are Scoots leading the RD fan club (I can has membership? So long as they don't mind me rushing off to attend TS fan club meetings), the Mysterious Darkwing Lantern Mare Corps, the BTAS references, and the ending.
I thought this episode was pretty good. Wasn't the best but still good.
And to all of you people saying "I hope this isn't a sign of things to come?" Implying this was a bad episode, REALLY!? Every single series EVERY series has at least some "bad" episodes in them. So you all should just relax when judging the whole season, we still have 18 flipping episodes left in season two for the love of pete.
@Adrian Brony Yeah, I'm not having a good night, and it seems like I'm saying the wrong thing too often, so I guess I'm being a bit sensitive right now. :P Might be time to call it a night.
why are you guys so shocked about a Crane and a Dam? Cutie Mark Cronicles, Applejack goes to Manehattan. We clearly see Sky Scrapers that have to built with the help of a what now? We also see flashes of massive bright lights along a pony analog of Broadway. where do they get the power for all those light bulbs?
Twilight clearly has a computer in her basement that can read and record brain synapses. Cloudsdale has industrial machines mass producing clouds, there's steam power trains as well as pony powered versions.
The Show Stoppers episode... They have spot lights, microphones and speakers. Rarity has a sewing machine for crying out loud.
anyways, fun episode, not a personal favorite but still worth getting up early to watch with everyone else at Bronystate.
PS, Lauren Faust herself has stated Ponies have access to modern tech! *flips keyboard*
... I left a comment here this morning and came back now to see what other kinds of comments had been posted. I wasn't a huge fan of this episode either, but seriously guys. Take a chill pill. Forget the predictability. I'll list all the episodes I correctly predicted from season 1:
Ticket Master Applebuck Season Bridle Gossip Swarm of the Century Fall Weather Friends (except for Princess Celestia's appearance at the end, I hadn't predicted that) Feeling Pinkie Keen Sonic Rainboom Green Isn't Your Color Over a Barrel A Bird in the Hoof Party of One (which happens to be one of my favourite episodes) The Best Night Ever
That's nearly half the season, yet I still consider MLP:FiM my favourite show on T.V. Predictability has always been part of MLP, but it's the way they get to the "surprise" that makes it fun imo. In every predictable episode there was some part of it that surprised me, even if it wasn't the overall message.
Stop worrying about the episodes being predictable, they have always been that way. I'm not saying you HAVE to like it. I repeat, I wasn't the biggest fan of this one either. I haven't lost all hope for the show, though! Losing hope never even registered in my mind. Relax, and look forward to next week's episode.
I loved it :) My only real complaint is that they should organize the episodes so as not to repeat character-centric episodes for the same character. Otherwise: darkwing pony, creepy fangirl scootaloo, pinkie sense, nyan dash poster, it had a lot of awesome stuff in it :) The moral was rather obvious, yes, but I don't think that detracted at all because they did it in a funny way.
I honestly only saw like 12 minutes and then went to the ending.
It just... this types of Anvilicious, character exageration episodes rube me in the wrong way. Rain bow dash desesperation and desire to be praised... it was just sad and almost depressing.
Why I liked was the animation and the soundtrack.
Does anybody noted that since episode 1, the sound of cloves had gone from so-so to superb? Seriously, you can hear it with perfect synchronization in the last 5 minutes and the expresions of ponies are at the same time more humane and more alien with each new work.
This wasn't the best episode, but it wasn't bad. I think people are freaking out about nothing. While people's reasons for disliking an episode or S2 might vary, I perceive the following trends:
1) Many Bronies are forgetting the primary audience of MLP is younger kids. Although S2 has seen things like the Big Lebowski cameo, Mortal Kombat pony, etc., the writing is still geared towards children. It wasn't as if any of the season endings in S1 were incredibly surprising, after all.
2) I think that some of the community can't come to grips that their fanon is being torn down with each S2 episode. Over the summer break, many absorbed themselves in fanfics which tried to develop the characters and Equestria further than the show. The problem is that no matter how well written a fanfic is, it isn't canon. While Luna is the largest example of this, there are plenty of ways in which individual fanon could get broken with each S2 episode.
3) Some people are failing to look back and realize that this show has always been quite loosey goosey with Equestria's technology level. That being said, the evidence tends towards their having a society which is reasonably close to modern real world standards. S1 showed us several things like DJ turntables, sewing machines, kitchen appliances, and so forth. Thus far they seem to lack long range communication and entertainment devices (telephones, television, radio) and modern desktop computers. It is entirely possible that their dam powers some sort of magical device which provides mystical power to their devices rather than electricity, but neither could be said to be out of place given what we've seen in the show. Also, Manehattan has tall buildings, so why it is a big deal that they were building one in Ponyville? Maybe the town is expanding.
As a previous poster mentioned: If MLP were designed with realism in mind, technology created in a society built by intelligent equines would likely be very alien to us. However, the show needs to use very recognizable objects so that children can understand what's going on.
I really enjoyed this episode, it was solidly entertaining and from a world building perspective it was a real treat, loved seeing the hydro electric dam and the mechanized construction equipment as well as even the toddler pony. Only real criticism would be I would have liked to see Fluttershy do more than just a flyover and have helped some animals or something. Other than that, 8.5/10 for me.
We finally address Rainbow Dash's flaw! I love this episode! She seriously needed to be called out on that, since season 1. She's cool now. I think I'll join her fan club.
Oh, and the usual predictable endings. MLP, you're always like that.
Btw, I was okay with apartment buildings but CRANES?!?! Don't fuck with me! Ponies build apartment buildings like Egyptian slaves for Pharaohs!
Hey, this is the first time we see a baby pony, isn't it?
Most importantly, look at how many people hated this episode! I mean, just go and count them! Like, 99% of them absolutely hated it! And how dare they have complaints about a kids' show?!
Ok, now that I've acted like a hypocrite in more than 3 ways, I go.
Reading through the comments as the episode went about, there was genuine surprise when Twilight fixed the dam after Applejack stopped the bus. So I don't buy the whole predictability thing.
I don't buy Flanderization either; May the Best Pet Win was more of what we saw of Rainbow Dash in Fall Weather Friends, and this episode was more of what we saw in Friendship is Magic Part 1. There's a difference between bragging and being overly competitive.
There's also a difference between the moral of this (A real hero doesn't brag about accomplishments when attention is directed towards them) and the supposed moral of Boast Busters (Don't boast to gain attention in the first place, especially when you're lying) - not to mention that the actual moral of Boast Busters was what Twilight learned: It's okay to be proud of what you accomplished. So no Forgotten Aesop here either.
Luna has a microwave. Vinyl had a turntable. Tank had a copter with energy flowing along wires. It's no big reveal that Ponyville has electricity. And have you seen the numerous waterfalls coming off nearby Canterlot? Hydroelectric is definitely the way to go. As for cranes and baby carriages, they had bowling balls with three holes already. They had doorknobs already. It is time to accept that these ponies are in a world with human-oriented stuff.
Mare-Do-Well was fun. Applejack naming her bucking hooves was hilarious. Derpy derped a big derp, and that made me cheer. Bon-Bon was in Rainbow Dash's fan club - poor, poor Heartstrings. And Pinkie Pie had Pinkie Senses and called Twilight "Silly" after a "call me silly" setup.
The only thing that was bad about this episode was that Pinkie didn't giggle at the ghosties. This episode was better than Luna Eclipsed.
The reception on YT for the episode is very strongly positive, thousands of likes and only 22 dislikes so far. People are over stating the negative response to this and are seemingly blind to the overwhelmingly majority positive response.
I'm not the only guy who guessed "every other mane6" after the magic and wings right? (I secretly hoped it was a new alicorn... or Luna seeking further redemption)
Oh and besides the obvious Dark Wing Duck ref... I'm not the only guy who noticed an obvious Batman Animated Series ref in the music... right?
I hate it when people complain. I mean they just sit around whining and crying and nobody cares. People who complain are stupid and I hate them and want them to cry.
I have finally decided what I don't like about the new direction of season 2.
There is no continuity.
In season 1, we were introduced to Faust's vision of Equestria; essentially a knights and castles society with magic as technology, pretty much a D&D world with ponies (despite a few exceptions).
Our characters were well defined: Twilight as our protagonist, Pinky as being comic relief that is also fearless, and so forth.
Equestria seemed a solid place, with rules, a place where sapient ponies could learn about friendship and deal with each other.
The world was interesting, the technology relevant to a medieval land (mostly. As Faust herself noted, there were some unfortunate exceptions.), and the stories actually taught something about friendship.
In this season we find Equestria very different. Now it has become Wacky Land out of Tiny Toon Adventures, with whatever prop is needed - be it a hydroelectric dam for a superman reference, or a stupidly dangerous cliff for a street - suddenly appearing so that we can have cartoon comedy.
I keep expecting Buster Bunny to pop up at any moment. The world no longer has a soul, it has become a stage for gags.
What is next, parodies of Star Trek, or perhaps more Marvel Comics?
Worse, they just recycled a plot. We've already seen Trixie be a boastful entity, now we get the same lesson shoved down our throats only using Rainbow Dash.
For me, this was the worst episode thus far - because it destroys the world. Equestria no longer has a unique identity; now it is just... the modern world, or whatever they need it to be, so long as it serves a cartoon gag.
The show has turned from a heartfelt story of ponies into a series of gags. It used to be more than merely a cartoon, now a it has become a cartoon of itself.
Think about it: even the world of the bloody Thundercats - or the world of the awful Smurfs - is more self consistent that Equestria is after this redundant episode about Trixie - um, Dash - being boastful.
I want Lauren Faust back, and I want her to fix Equestria. I want her vision, not this new gag-a-thon of internet jokes and parodies of movies. I've already seen Freakazoid, I don't need another season of that show.
I need another season of the show I fell in love with, My Little Pony, Friendship Is Magic.
Stop blindly liking the show? If you care about it then complain? You arrogantly assume that everyone either agrees with you but doesn't want to say so, or agrees but doesn't know it yet.
Liking episodes that you do not does not make us blind. We disagree with you. That's it.
We do care, and if we feel there is something to complain about, we complain.
The magic is not gone for most of us. I'm sorry you feel that way, and you are entitled to your opinions, but stop demanding that others conform to them.
It's okay to criticize, yes, but what you're saying sounds more like "it's NOT okay to NOT" criticize. That's ridiculous.
Good point about Boast Busters; I can't believe I forgot that the Aesop on that one was about Twilight, not Trixie. Eheh, guess I have her elevated status in the fandom to blame for that.
Luna's microwave is only fanon, but aside from that I agree about the schizo tech. It's nothing new.
Pinkie's sudden fear of ghosts was odd, but maybe she was just playing scared for fun again.
Thanks for the clarification; it made me feel better. And I'm sorry for getting overly worked up about it. :) When I'm not sure of people's intentions, I guess I start to fear the worst.
Blargh, enjoyable episode, but it was irritating that I figured out the plot twist approximately 2 seconds in. I know this is a kids show, but giving more hints to something that's obvious is annoying. I liked the action sequences, but I wanted Rainbow Dash to turn into Rorschach and for the theme of the episode to be that vigilantism is a crime (okay, I'm kidding about that one, but it would be funny). The only thing that I didn't expect was for the Pinkie sense to come back again. Overall, I liked the episode more than a lot of the episodes from Season 1, but the least of all the episodes in Season 2.
I think what's being complained about is not positive posts, but the "It's not fair to complain about a children's show" posts, that we do see a lot of right now. These posts aren't helping people who are disappointed by the ponies not being awesome for them this weekend.
Sure, unbridled negativity isn't good for a fan site, and I'm all in favor of trying to cheer people up. (And someone who's going to the "The magic in MLP is gone" extreme definitely needs cheering up.) But I think that's better done by pointing out why there's reason to hope for more pleasing episodes in the next 31 paid for, or leading people to pony-fix-substitutes like the humorous Sparkle's Law fiction that went up recently.
To be honest, I hated everything about lesson zero. nothing seemed out of place, but I really To be honest, I hated everything about lesson zero. nothing seemed out of place, but I really did not like it at all. this episode was very different. but it was not too much better. not enough happened to make it feel like a full episode(looking at you, sisterhooves),like most of the other episodes this season. This episode was really even with best pet, only because the latter had a musical number (other than that, not impressed)cutiepox was just a bit more interesting IMO... Don't tase me, bro. the reveal was good and predicable, and I'm glad i was not the onlyone that heard something about skyrim during the cloud swimming scene. Also, a house that you can swim in? Pegasi have it made! oh and why do all the little colts have to be depicted as ugly? (snails is borderline passable as some sort of kid with a growth-spurt, but snips haunts my nightmares with his human-fish-like face)they could at least look ponyish, with slightly different muzzles. In conclusion, PONIES! That is all.
I have a thought, one that perhaps may help with mutual understanding.
I suggest... that possibly there are (at least) two distinct kinds of fans for MLP:FIM, and each is after something very different, each was attracted for a different thing they liked.
Type one: I don't have a clever name for it, but basically I suggest people who yearn for a better, nicer, kinder, cooler world. They're here because MLP offers, or did offer, a vision of a magical world they wish they could live in. Kind of like Trekkies wish they could actually live in that future.
This type wants to see everyday stories about friendship, kindness and hear happy songs. They're not in it for the comedy, they're in it for the same thing people get from... religion, I suppose. Something better than Here.
Type two: arguably the larger group, would be fans who just happen to like any funny, hip cartoon. They aren't here for any big message, they have no need for the show to be anything more than a laugh. If it's fun, if it isn't too dumb, it if makes them chuckle, then MLP has done everything anyone could expect it to do. Good job, all around!
I suggest that perhaps this is where we get such a difference between those upset and those not with certain episodes or the tone between seasons.
Two very different things are being wanted from MPL, I think, and in some ways they can be mutually exclusive: too much funny and Type One loses precious immersion, too much tenderness, and Type Two can deal, but it just isn't all that funny anymore.
The first season, I think, really fed the Type Ones, the second season is feeding the Type Twos.
Yeah, it's kind of pop psychology and crap, but this kind of makes sense to me. Maybe it will to you too. Maybe something along these lines might help the two sides, if they exist as I describe, to understand each other, and the passions that fuel various comments.
Then again, maybe my anal sphincter is doing all of my talking for me. If so, poop.
I had to keep pausing this episode to give my ears a break. Rainbow Dash's voice hurts my ears nearly as badly as Pinkie Pie's voice does.
It took me a while before I figured out what was going on. When stopping the carriage, I thought Mare Do Well was Applejack, just going from the pose used. Her being faster changed my guess to Pinkie, given she's the only one we've seen outrun Dash. The scene at the dam had me thinking Twilight from the magenta-tinted magic, and with the previous scenes being due to augmentation of her speed and strength with magic. The flyby had me thinking one of the princesses was using a magic disguise, then I realised that with ridiculously unlikely and said "screw it, it's got to be the main six taking turns."
I think this episode was generally good, but it hit it's points a little too hard and too repetitively. It was a good storey, but something in the storyboarding or animation lacked subtlety.
Also, I caught Rainbow's voice slipping into Applejack's voice a couple of times.
And my final note is that the real hero of this episode will be whoever builds some kind of safety railing around the giant cliff edge that apparently has always been just on the edge of Poneyville.
Just listen to this, to those of you who aren't familiar with this awesome film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=cE68oB02wbs#t=38s
Overall, a decent episode. I probably would have liked it better if I was actually interested in the superhero genre or had any idea who Darkwing Duck is.
That being said, I believe that Season 2 is still superior to Season 1. A few of the comments seem to think that the show has lost its heart and message of love and tolerance, while in my eyes, there seems to be a lot more of it. You have the 2-part Return of Harmony, where the six actually break up and Twilight has to get everyone back together despite the fact she couldn't stand their behavior, demonstrating the endurance of friendship. Luna had to learn how to make friends after being isolated for a millennium. Sisterhooves Social and May the Best Pet Win had a lot of heartwarming moments in them as well, and shows that the show is about family in addition to friendship. Some said that the humor is the icing on the cake, while the themes and messages is the actual cake, and I agree with that. While the icing is definitely more than in Season 1, the cake is still there and is still awesome.
Also I second Phil Srobeighn's analysis of Boast Busters. That episode shows Twilight the opposite extreme mindset of Rainbow Dash. She just stood there as her friends were tied up, electrocuted, and humiliated, all because she was afraid of being seen as a braggart.
I was still pretty annoyed at the Dash hatred being spammed on many forums. I'm starting to lose faith in the community. I wouldn't be surprised if there were more offshoots of the bronies in the future.
@SajinZero The lack of power-lines leading awy form it, plus comment from Lauren about her own head canon for how electronic-looking technology can be shown make it plausible that it is a hydro-ARCANIC dam, much like the Luxfont in the Webcomic "Tales of the Questor"
Hm... re-examining this ep, I think a better twist would've been that the "Mare-Do-Well" was setting up the accidents so (s)he could swoop in and save ponies, but make a fatal miscalculation in her final stunt, so RD would've had to put her petty anger aside to help save the day. The MDW would then gallop into the sunset, her identity forever a mystery, and RD would still learn her lesson in humility.
Give it a couple of weeks and give the guy a break. His grandfather just died and he will want to have a few days off while he takes care of his family guys.

ReplyDeleteI don't look for reasons to be the way that I am. It's naturally the way I feel and think and I see no reason to pretend to be otherwise.
But look on the bright side, at least you can look down on people you've never met.
@Saddlesoap
ReplyDeleteYou, sir, have won the Internet.

That Trixie silhouette up there got my hopes up...
ReplyDeleteI liked this episode. In fact, I'd rate it quite high. The arrogance of RD made me grin and the dramatic irony was fun. The way in which each character lent themselves to the events was, IMO, well-crafted. The dam scene was definitely my favourite.
ReplyDeleteAlso the baby was adorable.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, the number of accidents in a short space of time was weird. I interpreted it as the wrath of the pony gods on a universe that hasn't any Pinkie Pie, Fluttershy or Applejack focused episodes this season.
@DJB123
ReplyDeleteim not looking down on you personally, im looking down on Cynicism as an idea.
also naturally feeling sad isn't a good thing.
@Mojo
ReplyDeleteThat's what I'm talking about right there.
I found it on YouTube by now and it still hasn't shown up here. Also the chat stopped updating.
ReplyDeleteI didn't like it, I feel like this type of premise has been overused. Good animation, showed us more of Ponyville, but still an overused premise. 7/10
ReplyDeleteOn rewatch, my final observation:
ReplyDeleteWinkingest ending in Pony history. If you ever need a suggestive wink to go with a lyric in a PMV, this is your episode to mine.
I think it is an illusion created by twilight to help rainbOw realize it's okay to not be thae best. Or.... BATMANE
ReplyDelete@DJB123
ReplyDeleteyeah that does actually sound like my ego.
yeah im self aware of my egomania, trying to work on it.
Maybe Dash's mum? x
ReplyDelete@WhiteDiamonds
ReplyDeleteI'm jealous, but not quite spiteful enough to be glad you don't have originals.
I thought it was gonna be Trixie-who-grew-wings.
ReplyDelete@cardshark78
ReplyDeleteThank you. Have a muffin.
@cardshark78
ReplyDeleteThank you. Have a muffin.
Loved the episode, as with the rest of the Season 2 episodes. There hasn't been one that I didn't like..and frankly, I don't think there will be.
ReplyDeleteSimply because I enjoy the show for what it is. I'm not gonna go and tear apart a children's show for it's flaws, that's just silly. "Hey guys! I hated that episode of Rugrats because Tommy totally should of pulled out his screwdriver quicker!"
Sounds silly eh?
General thoughts, this episode was written to solve Dash Arrogance problem, hopefully this will lead into another episode later in the series, like how Look Before you Sleep set up the situation for Sisterhooves Social. Considering how Pinkie Sense returned in this episode, hopefully Dash will learn to be less Arrogant from now on as well.
ReplyDeleteThat said, Dash cannot hold an episode just by communicating with herself, she works best when she has over characters to bounce of (Though that's the case with everyone, they only work if it's a breakdown episode it seems) have more characters to work with, it would have been fun to maybe have a scene of just her and spike at one point.
Also general idea, don't do two episodes in a row with the same character being the spotlight, Showstoppers wasn't liked because it was two Crusaders episodes in a row. This is probably the same case. Most people want to see more of the other characters now.
@Arothyss: "I think someponies here need to watch something a little more in their league, like Twilight."
ReplyDeleteWow, I didn't think a brony was capable of such a harsh insult...
@jodyjm13
ReplyDeleteI've found that bronies are actually harsher than other internet communities in their own right because they are more passive aggressive and hypocritical than any other fanbase I've ever seen... then again, I stick around because I love the show, the art, the music, so much good stuff.
@jodyjm13
ReplyDeleteI wasn't sure either, but in the off-chance it was the former I really couldn't bear to let it pass by.
@Harwick
You're quite welcome! It wouldn't be a trouble at all, provided I could find them of course. You may need to remind me though, as my mind can be like a sieve at times, and recently even more than usual... ah well.
Oh and thank you for the well-wishes too; it will certainly be nice to be settled again.
@Saddlesoap
ReplyDeleteThis is beyond brilliant; kudos!
I was about to post a lengthy explanation of what parts of the episode I didn't like and why I think it's the nadir of season 2...and then Saddlesoap just had to jump in here and make the episode SUDDENLY AWESOME with that comments.
ReplyDeleteWell played, mysterious Internet stranger. Well played.
I hoped it was going to be princess luna after seeing the horn and wings, but as soon as RD started chasinge her through town it was pretty obvious who it was

ReplyDeleteIf being a nihilist and a hipster is so awesome, why are you watching a show that's so determinedly positive and sincere?
I hope it's Trixie
ReplyDeleteI'm just confused and slightly concerned that Ponyville has a dirt path down a dangerously steep hill leading straight off a cliff.
ReplyDeleteSo it's now canon.
ReplyDeleteRainbow Dash has put her hoof in a Dyke.
I saw the ending coming a mile away.
ReplyDeleteThe episode had more superhero cliches than I could count.
Rainbow Dash is an egomanic who will never learn her lesson.
It is for these reasons that I... absolutely loved the episode. Why so serious people?
Dear Princess Celestia,
ReplyDeleteRemember that lesson we all learned back in "Boast Busters," about how foolish pride is annoying? Yeah. That lesson this week. Only with me, Rainbow Dash.
Blah-blah-blah... Man, Twilight makes this look so easy.
So, um... Yeah. Bored now. Bye.
ReplyDeleteI knew it was the mane 6 the whole time :)
ReplyDeletealthough about half way through I thought it would be luna
@SYLOH
ReplyDeleteOh dear, Dash is never going to hear the end of that, is she?
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI knew it was them. I mean, who else would t have been? Also, I'm a little disappointed that we didn't actually get to hear Rainbow's letter Celestia.
ReplyDeleteI heard somewhere that the network is in charge of how the episodes air and not the producers?
ReplyDeleteBecause what a terrible terrible decision airing 'May the best pet win' and "Mysterious Mare-do-well" back to back. Felt repetitive.
Is it me, or is Ponyville a lot more industrialised? That was a mechanical crane.
ReplyDeleteI loved this episode!
ReplyDeleteTo those saying Scootaloo changed loyalties on Dash, remember that Scootaloo still thought of Dash when no one else did. :)
I'd like to point out that MLP:FIM stories have always been on the predictable side, even since Season 1--it's the ride that's the most fun! I know this is still surprising for some of us, but episodes are still written for little girls, for who these plots may be entirely new. :)
It's rather sad seeing all of the bickering in the comments. Come on, guys. I thought we were better than that. :/
ReplyDeleteOh well, *grabs jetpack* Nothing to see here .__.
Mare-Do-Well is best pony
ReplyDelete@Mike
ReplyDelete"I guess Skyrim's going to have to wait!" (or something like that.)
anyone else notice a lack of tank?
ReplyDelete@MasterProcrastinator
ReplyDeleteIf you check it out carefully, all that bickering comes from the same four or five people. I you remove those comments all you have left is just your run of the mill episode discussion. People loving it, people hating it, people being neutral about it. Nothing else.
*grabs my own jetpack and goes away too*
@DJB123
ReplyDeleteMy natural inclination is towards cynicism and pessimism; I've decided I'd rather try to be positive and hopeful. That's one reason I love MLP:FiM so much; it helps me develop a more positive outlook. If you want to remain the way you are, that's find, just don't feel like you have to. As messed up as this world is, there's always something good to focus on in yourself and in others.
@Xalgoz Number 7 was spot on, and was first correct answer. Well done.
ReplyDelete@Heartmend I TOTALLY FORGOT
ReplyDeleteIt Twilight, Applejack,Pinkie pie ,Fluttershy, and they are all the misterys mares. Rarity is the one who made the outfits and that what I know any who think I am wrong say it.
ReplyDeleteOn predictability: recall a certain filmmaker whose movies relied heavily upon the big twist at the end. The first two movies he made were really good, but as time went on, it was apparent he became so focused on the twist that he kinda sorta forgot to make the rest of the movie worth watching, too. So predictability doesn't always factor into whether a given thing is good or not.
ReplyDelete@jodyjm13
ReplyDeleteGood for you.
I personally liked this one. The plot wasn't stupid, it was simply a reaction to RD getting UNBEARABLY obnoxious.
ReplyDeleteI also liked the BTAS references like the signs.
ReplyDelete@hybr1dgamerx
ReplyDeleteI tend to agree. I don't really like dash and I wasn't a big fan of this episode personally, but I've still enjoyed lots of the SE2 eps and I'm going to keep on watching.
Sparkler = Ditzy Doo's sister.
ReplyDeleteMakes much more sense.
(also Sparkler doesn't sound like a teenager)
@jodyjm13
ReplyDeleteIf the horseshoe fits...
I wouldn't worry about the harshness though. That kind of insult requires intellect for someone to understand it, so it won't affect them.
Still, yeah, that was pretty nasty, even for me.
I'm afraid I have to join the haters this week, just because this was so out of character.
ReplyDeleteRainbow Dash was able to take a hint about her vainglory in Boast Busters, which handled the whole issue better.
Delicious.
Dumbest. Plot Twist. Ever.
ReplyDeleteOf all time. Not 20% cooler.
BUT! It was a very good episode for the most part.
@WhiteDiamonds
ReplyDeleteYes, the construction site and the hydroelectric dam seemed out of place in what's been established as a mostly pre-electricity society; I honestly don't know why it didn't bother me more in this episode, but I just shrugged it off. So long as it's not the beginning of a pattern...
And I have to say I also consider the 1990s Batman series as one of the best animated shows of all time, possibly the best period; I've got some photocopies of model sheets from TaleSpin, so I can imagine how nice it would be to have similar memorabilia from Batman.
bring on the mare do well fics
ReplyDeleteI didn't know there was so many neighsayers (that's what you're called now) the episode was great.
ReplyDeleteWas it predictable? Yes, but stop whining just because it was some obscure backround pony.
This is a children's show, a very well produced one, but still a children's show.
Please tell me someone out there caught the Batman: TAS reference in one of the crowd scenes
ReplyDeleteRainbow Dash = Supermare
ReplyDeleteRarity = Ironmare
Twilight = Batmare
Pinkie Pie = Spider-Mare
Fluttershy = Mare-Hulk
Applejack = Ron Burgandy, apparently
It was only predictable towards the end. But for a long time you didn't know who she was.
ReplyDeleteRainbow Dash can't save bad episodes. Last three have been worse and worse--Cutie Pox wasn't at the bottom of my list, but Best Pet was, and is now replace by Mare-do-well. Which is a little sad, because RD is my fav pony.
ReplyDeleteA lot of little things bothered me with this one, many of which already mentioned by others:
Though, I spose after that I could mention a few positive things:
-Scootaloo was great, and her heading an RD fanclub was nice
-The secret identity wasn't as kick-you-in-the-face-we're-not-even-writing-for-children-anymore-it's-so-obvious as the winner for Best Pet. Not as good as sisterhooves tho.
-RD wasn't abusing animals this time.

ReplyDeleteyes and it was hilarious... though that brings to questing whether it was added after Batman: TAS was added to the Hub or not
All the background ponies!!!! Need.... Fanart....
ReplyDeleteHHHNNNGGGGHHH <3 <3 <3
Oh man this episode was AWESOME. Very predictable, yes, but super cute and fun ^^
Also I can't help but notice that there have been a lot more male ponies included in recent episodes. Maybe the female to male ratio isn't as big a difference as we may have originally thought! Hmmm
Wow. A reference to The Cape *bg music when dash is saving the filly from the well*.
ReplyDeleteAnyone else notice that the background music during the construction scene was the same as when Pinkie Pie was going crazy in Party of One?
ReplyDeleteOkay, first off, where are you Bronies with jetpacks getting them?! Me Gusta, send me the manufacturers name =)
ReplyDeleteOn the episode:
I don't think it was too heavy handed, I think it was funny as hell and well done.
ReplyDeleteThis is a cartoon afterall!
I was going to post a long writeup on why the level of technology doesn't matter much in a cartoon, but instead I will just say:
ReplyDeletePonies have RENEWABLE ENERGY.
Cranes, prams and hydroelectric dams, meh. They did kind of break the setting for me - like the bowling alley in cutie pox, and rarity's parents... everything about them.
ReplyDeleteThey could have had a nice dangerous building site without diesel cranes and all that modernity.
ReplyDeleteIt should've been obvious the was the Mane 6 when Twilight, Pinkie and AJ all started complaining about Rainbow Dash's egoisms. You all complain that it was predictable from the beginning, but yet again, what episode doesn't have a predictable lesson? We all know how they end, I mean, really? Who didn't see Tank being the pet? Who didn't see Discord being defeated by the Mane 6? As good old Pinkie Pie would say, "Well, duh!"
I think you're all just being sore because your waifus aren't the centric episodes. It was a good episode. Much better than The Cutie Pox and the Sisterhooves Social.
I LOVED THIS EPISODE.
ReplyDeleteComing on the heels of May the Best Pet Win was a hard act to follow, but this episode was a worthy successor.
"Danger's my middle name. Rainbow 'Danger' Dash."
Hell yeah!
tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FanDumb
ReplyDelete...Just leavin' this here for the sane ones among us.
Carry on, headless chickens of both sides.
The Dam and Crane in Ponyville make sense when you keep in mind that Ponyville got itself a train with Season 2.
ReplyDeleteThe small town is expanding and modernizing, slowly growing into a bigger town.
ReplyDeleteAnd actually, so far this season, I think Sisterhooves Social is actually my favourite - rarity's parents aside - which surprised me as i would've thought luna eclipsed would be.
ReplyDeleteI also don't feel Scootaloo turned on Rainbow Dash.
You know, my current wallpaper is of Twilight Sparkle and Batman, a crop from that find-all-the-characters puzzle from about a month back.
ReplyDeleteSo this episode is incredibly hilarious to me. Particularly the Batman-ish music playing whenever Batmare... er... Mare Do Well is about.
no, wait, I *don't* buy the prams. They're *ponies*. They have *excellent* backs for carrying things, and they don't have hands to make pushing a pram around make any sense at all.
ReplyDeleteThey even have saddles, though they seem to be nonfunctional fashion accessories, but it would be an obvious thing to rig up a saddle/cradle thing for foals small enough to not be on their feet yet. That totally makes sense. And even easier for them to do (once they solved the making-and-putting-on-of-saddles bit, which they have) than it is for human mothers to carry their infants around for the millions of years they did so before prams were invented.
So maybe what we're seeing here is just some too-lazy peril scenarios for our heroes to save the day. The well, the pram, the building site, the dam - sometimes you can get away with the trope, sometimes it's just a lazy cliché and you *could* have told the same story without breaking the setting.
@Don't Call Me Brony (Please)
ReplyDeleteYou made me laugh out loud. You even made me spell out LOL. All my internets, I'd say you won them, but I had to give them all to The Hub last week, and I'm still trying to catch up on my replenishing of them since my cable modem broke last Wednesday.
Have a Faygo instead!
It's possible to take a negative lesson from this episode: that it's okay to keep secrets from and manipulate a friend so long as it's for what you consider to be their own good.
ReplyDeleteMare Do Well was realised brilliantly though, and there's going to be some excellent iconography out of that. Never heard of darkwing duck before today, but frankly, from a quick google image search, i think it's another thing that's better with ponies. I was reminded more of V (for Vendetta) in the shapes of the *rest* of the costume, not, obviously, the mask.
ReplyDeleteI thought this episode was all right.
ReplyDeleteI did think that they overused the accidents. That was way too many. I don't think that the other ponies were trying to humiliate Rainbow Dash. I think that they were trying to show her how a hero was supposed to behave and how much better people treated her.
OK, loved the Darkwing Duck and B:TAS shoutouts with the costume and music.
ReplyDeleteAs for the episode overall? Not the best, but decent enough. I felt they could have played up RD's ego a little less, but that's just me. I could see the ending as soon as the wings and horn started appearing and disappearing, but I liked it anyway. The moral was slightly heavy-handed and RD could have used a little more build-up to her change of heart. Spike as ghostwriter was nice, the RD fanclub was hilarious (what happens to it now, anyway? Or to all the Mare-do-Well merchandising?).
Overall, I'd give it a 6.5-7 out of 10. RD never has the best episodes, but they're OK.

ReplyDeleteSo many of the fandom keep losing sight of the fact that the show doesn't have a resolute continuity. This is an intentional mandate from Hasbro so they can use it as a marketing tool where need be without worrying about continuity.
ReplyDeleteJust accept the fact that there will be constant contradiction, disregardances of continuity, out of place elements, low level redefinitions of character, and reconfigurations of background characters.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I start to notice why I'm not enjoying the second season as much as I did the first one... It feels like the characters are "restarted" over and over again. The lessons the characters are learning now seem a bit redundant with what they already know.
Lol Darkwing Duck inspired Mare Do Well.
ReplyDeletean hero
ReplyDeleteMan, reading over some of these makes me wonder how many of us actually read what is said before and how many just crank out responses. Ha, even my previous comment I now see as too preachy. I think 'Haters gonna hate' sums it all up, im gonna go watch the episode again.
ReplyDeleteThe ending was pretty obvious (once it was shown that the mare had magic AND could fly) but I thought it was a really fun episode. There was a lot of fun animation (like when RD was in the water) and hilarious facial expressions and I tend to like eps where Rainbow Dash has to learn humility. Also, did the score, esp when RD is chasing the mare at the end of the ep, remind anyone of the B:tAS theme?
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, I'm shocked at how anti tech people are. We've seen:
ReplyDelete•lamps
•refrigerators
•stoves
•motorized kitchen mixer
•switch operated lighting
•DJ turntable
•spotlighting
•fans
•megaphones
•microphone and speaker systems
•laboratory equipment that appears to be an EEG machine
•and maybe other stuff I'm missing.
This totally ruined my picture of equestria/ponyville and Rainbow Dash.
ReplyDeleteI'm going to say that Prams have existed since The Ticket Master, although in that one time it was used for a Benny Hill Chase sequence. So yeah...
ReplyDeleteHonestly how this episode is going to turn out will depend on how they write Rainbow Dash from now on, if she continues to be arrogant, then this episode will feel like a complete waste.
ReplyDelete@jodyjm13
ReplyDeleteI know!
ReplyDeleteI'm reading the comments now and I'm surprised that people didn't like this one! Maybe it's just because I'll watch anything with capes but Personally, I loved all the superhero cliches (and how Ponyville suddenly became super dangerous --"What, suddenly there are no natural disasters?")
ReplyDeleteIdk, maybe people were disappointed because was pf the hype?
ReplyDeleteStill, I'm sticking to Lesson Zero as my favorite best episode in season 2.
1. Ponies Shouldn't Have Technology (X), It Makes No Sense for Ponies!
ReplyDeleteNone of their technology makes any sense for ponies, you doof.
ReplyDeleteBut I feel as though people are expecting TOO much from this series. Remember it's intended age group.
SPOILER ALERT***
ReplyDelete...knew it had to be the rest of the mane six...
END SPOILER***
@richfiles
ReplyDeleteSpeaking just for myself, the problem is exactly that the anachronistic elements in this episode were "big thing(s)".
ReplyDeleteI want to know what other people thought; I want to know if they noticed the same things I noticed, or if they noticed things I missed; I want to know which moments are catching on as memes; I want to see some thoughtful discussion and interpretation.
ReplyDeleteIncongruous technology, props and settings are there to serve the plot and/or gags. There's precious little screen time to spend (or waste) on explaining them away. Fans commenting here are taking these things way more seriously than the show's creators are. Get a little perspective; it's a light-hearted children's cartoon that occasionally feels profound. this just wasn't one of those occasions.
@Alondro
ReplyDeleteUrgh.
ReplyDeleteIt was predictable, but remember it is a kid's show, and there have been plenty of predictable eps before:
Nyan Cat RD is in the club house, in case no pony mentioned it yet 21:58
ReplyDeleteIn order for Rainbow Dash to redeem herself in my eyes, she needs to become AN hero rather than be A hero. And while they're at it, the rest of the mane cast should proabably do that too. Especially Twilight, AJ, and Pinkie.
ReplyDelete@b493fe1e-184f-11e1-90f6-000bcdcb8a73
ReplyDeleteThat makes no sense whatsoever.
(yes, I am aware of what "an hero" means.)
@Jon
ReplyDeleteI was about to say that, Jon.
For people complaining about it being bad because it was too predictable, I have 2 words for you:
ReplyDeleteTicket Master.
First time watching episode same day. I'm in the "kinda disappointed" camp. It wasn't terrible, but ponies as construction/architects felt really out of place. I'd rather have a "don't ask, don't tell" policy when it comes to how things were built. Ponies make terrible carpenters.
ReplyDeleteRD freaking at the prospect of being alone conforms to a personal feeling of mine; she is very insecure, and has been since the beginning.
You can say ponies make terrible carpenters and architects, but what else will they use all of Ponythagoras's theories for?
ReplyDelete13 mins into the episode.
ReplyDeleteDon't tell me that the mysterious mare is actually all of the girls, trying to teach Rainbow Dash a lesson.
Let's see if I'm wrong.
@Epesi
ReplyDeleteI feel like I'm partly responsible for this, riffing on the original comment like I did.
@Flutteryay
ReplyDeleteHow is "an hero" different from "a hero"? Is this another internet meme reference I missed?
For some reason, I just realized that I've never seen the ponies wash their hooves before eating. They walk around outside on their front hooves and then use them to shovel food in their mouths, or stick them in each other's mouths. If I were a germophobe I probably wouldn't be able to watch the show anymore.
ReplyDelete@milleniummaster18 Goddamn it, I'm too old for this shit, and I'm just 19.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, it was way better than the last episode, I enjoyed it more. Definitely one of the good ones from this season.
MFW Scootaloo becomes obsessed over Mare-do-well; http://mylittlefacewhen.com/f/
ReplyDeleteOr altenitavly; "HeroInferno.exe has stopped working..."
I'll admit that my first impression of both these episodes were not high at all, but then I re-watched them, and I noticed how awesome the song was in the last episode, how funny some of the jokes and references were, etc. etc.
ReplyDeleteAnd with the tech stuff, rule of funny.
@jodyjm13
ReplyDeleteYes, it is a (rather cruel, if I say so myself) meme started by 4chan. To become an hero means to commit suicide.
1 - These rotating hatefests for each new episode crack me up. Only ep I didn't like was Sisterhooves and that's just because I'm a only child. Apparently I have moar Love & Tolerance! for this show than any of you. :p
ReplyDelete2 - Equestria was always Schizo Tech imho.
@Eddie Perkins
BLASPHEMY, SEASON ONE WAS UTTER PERFECTION AND THE PEAK OF HUMAN FICTION AND THESE SEASON TWO ABOMINATIONS SULLY SEASON ONE'S GOOD NAME! lolololololololol
@b493fe1e-184f-11e1-90f6-000bcdcb8a73
ReplyDeleteNow that I've had "an hero" explained to me, I've got to ask again: Why did you start watching this show in the first place?
And this isn't sarcasm or passive-aggressive insulting, I'm genuinely curious. You prize your nihilism, cynicism, and snarky sense of humor, yet you praise season 1 of a genuinely positive, sincere, heartwarming cartoon; why?
@mycutiemarkisagun "Rack him,that's a good take"
ReplyDelete@Flutteryay
ReplyDeleteThanks for the explanation. Now I have another meme to avoid using like the plague.
I can't say I understand the hate coming from some of the haters today.
ReplyDeleteYes, the technology was a bit surprising, but when we first saw Vinyl with a turntable, what do you think powered that?
@Flutteryay
ReplyDeleteWhen that kid supposedly killed himself over a lost iPod, 4chan /b/tards were prank calling the kid's grieving parents and snapping photos of ipods mockingly placed on his grave.
Yeah, cruel sums it up nicely.
@jodyjm13
ReplyDeleteWell, I became a fan of the show via Cupcakes and Fallout Eq-
oh, you were talking to him, not me
._.
@mycutiemarkisagun
ReplyDeleteActually, I really like your explanation for how the dam's being used. And your other comments are absolutely spot on.
@Kitsula Tsulakala
ReplyDelete...bullshit. There is no way in HELL they made a "Cape" reference. No f'n way. IMPOSSIBLE, I SAY!
I'm not knocking fans who obsess over details ala Star Trek enthusiasts. While I don't let the small stuff bother me, I do love the show myself and understand the impulse to make our visions of the world fit together in a nice, tidy package. Especially the OCD sufferers among us, who are legion. ;-)
ReplyDeleteJust like knowing the combination to Captain Kirk's safe, there's a certain cool factor in knowing the tiniest of details about Equestria and our little ponies, and a satisfaction all its own which comes from that.
Why?
Because ponies. :-)
So is AppleDash now canon? Just look at the AJ's expression after RD says: "Hey Applejack, how'd you like to be immortalized as my friend?" and the flash goes off.
ReplyDeleteWait a minute... pony bowling balls have FINGER HOLES?!?
ReplyDeleteThat makes no sense! It ruined the show FOR EVAAAAR!!!!
(I've really got to stop reading these after-episode comments!)
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteDid Scootaloo's voice change? It seems different to me for some reason.
ReplyDeleteYES!!! FILM REEL! FILM REEL!!!
ReplyDeletegood lord you people will pick apart these episodes for anything, won't you?
ReplyDeletemy only problem with the episode is the pacing and the characters being slightly off.
but I can forgive that because this was the first episode written by a writer that is new to the show. cut him some slack.
@jodyjm13
ReplyDeleteSeason 1 was an amazing break from this harsh reality. An escape from the bleakness of everyday life. Now the series just reminds me of regular life.

ReplyDeletewhy are you still here?l I thought you said that the show and fandom was dead and that you were done with it.
(BTW, 7/10. you are very good at it, but if you were a bit less abrasive you have the makings to be a truly great troll.)
ReplyDeleteThe technology-isn't-following-the-canon bull I think is insane.
@dosed
ReplyDeleteI looked; I see a pony who desperately does not want her photo taken with Rainbow Dash. How, exactly, does that support Appledash shipping, much less make it canon?
@salesman173
ReplyDeleteSorry I mentioned that having a hydroelectric power dam and a 7-story building seemed out of place in Ponyville. I didn't realize I was hating the show or saying it was ruined.
@DeRockProject
ReplyDeleteI was glad to see her back too. I always liked her design.
@jodyjm13
ReplyDeletethat wasn't directed at you. there WERE people that were overreacting that much to it.
I liked this better after two viewings, but on the whole, I'd have to say that in my not-so-humble opinion this was the weakest episode of Season 2.
ReplyDeletePonies talking to themselves just cannot carry an episode.
ReplyDeleteAnd to all of you people saying "I hope this isn't a sign of things to come?" Implying this was a bad episode, REALLY!? Every single series EVERY series has at least some "bad" episodes in them. So you all should just relax when judging the whole season, we still have 18 flipping episodes left in season two for the love of pete.
not to be crass but I'm pretty sure Trixie will @^#t a brick when she finds out Twilight is also a Super Hero.
ReplyDelete@Adrian Brony
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm not having a good night, and it seems like I'm saying the wrong thing too often, so I guess I'm being a bit sensitive right now. :P Might be time to call it a night.
You gotta admit the action sequences were well planned out and animated too.
ReplyDeleteLol at the negative comments
ReplyDeleteShow for 12 year girls people...let's all take a chill pill
I wanna join the rainbow dash fane club. Those man/wig things are awesome!
ReplyDeletewhy are you guys so shocked about a Crane and a Dam? Cutie Mark Cronicles, Applejack goes to Manehattan. We clearly see Sky Scrapers that have to built with the help of a what now? We also see flashes of massive bright lights along a pony analog of Broadway. where do they get the power for all those light bulbs?
ReplyDeleteTwilight clearly has a computer in her basement that can read and record brain synapses.
Holy mother of-
ReplyDelete... I left a comment here this morning and came back now to see what other kinds of comments had been posted. I wasn't a huge fan of this episode either, but seriously guys. Take a chill pill. Forget the predictability. I'll list all the episodes I correctly predicted from season 1:
Ticket Master
Applebuck Season
Bridle Gossip
Swarm of the Century
Fall Weather Friends (except for Princess Celestia's appearance at the end, I hadn't predicted that)
Feeling Pinkie Keen
Sonic Rainboom
Green Isn't Your Color
Over a Barrel
A Bird in the Hoof
Party of One (which happens to be one of my favourite episodes)
The Best Night Ever
Otherwise: darkwing pony, creepy fangirl scootaloo, pinkie sense, nyan dash poster, it had a lot of awesome stuff in it :)
ReplyDeleteThe moral was rather obvious, yes, but I don't think that detracted at all because they did it in a funny way.
I found this episode to be a little bit predictable
ReplyDeleteI didn't care for this episode.
ReplyDeleteI honestly only saw like 12 minutes and then went to the ending.
It just... this types of Anvilicious, character exageration episodes rube me in the wrong way.
Best xenophiction ever.
This wasn't the best episode, but it wasn't bad. I think people are freaking out about nothing. While people's reasons for disliking an episode or S2 might vary, I perceive the following trends:
ReplyDelete1) Many Bronies are forgetting the primary audience of MLP is younger kids.
ReplyDeleteFluttershy was the first to help with the falling hot air balloon.
ReplyDeleteWe finally address Rainbow Dash's flaw! I love this episode! She seriously needed to be called out on that, since season 1. She's cool now. I think I'll join her fan club.
ReplyDeleteOh, and the usual predictable endings.
@DeRockProject Them actually having complaints has nothing to do with it. It's WHAT they're complaining about.
ReplyDelete@Ikusa GT
ReplyDeleteYep, that is valid. But, just note that there aren't that many people who hated it.
And some people were just complaining about complaining itself. All I wanted to say.
That was a great episode.
ReplyDeleteReading through the comments as the episode went about, there was genuine surprise when Twilight fixed the dam after Applejack stopped the bus.
ReplyDeletePonies that are irked by the characterization of Rainbow Dash confuse me.
ReplyDeletehttp://goo.gl/9Xty4
I enjoyed this episode.
ReplyDeleteAlso, obsessing over details in a children's cartoon are just a little bit sad.
I'm not the only guy who guessed "every other mane6" after the magic and wings right?
ReplyDelete(I secretly hoped it was a new alicorn... or Luna seeking further redemption)

ReplyDeleteThere is no continuity.
Sethisto is talking to himself. He's finally snapped.
ReplyDeleteStop blindly liking the show? If you care about it then complain? You arrogantly assume that everyone either agrees with you but doesn't want to say so, or agrees but doesn't know it yet.
ReplyDeleteLiking episodes that you do not does not make us blind.
I suspect she's just matured somewhat. Her VA is about 15.
ReplyDeleteGood point about Boast Busters; I can't believe I forgot that the Aesop on that one was about Twilight, not Trixie. Eheh, guess I have her elevated status in the fandom to blame for that.
ReplyDeleteLuna's microwave is only fanon, but aside from that I agree about the schizo tech. It's nothing new.
Pinkie's sudden fear of ghosts was odd, but maybe she was just playing scared for fun again.
WE ARE SETHISTO
ReplyDeleteWE ARE LEGION
Thanks for the clarification; it made me feel better. And I'm sorry for getting overly worked up about it. :) When I'm not sure of people's intentions, I guess I start to fear the worst.
ReplyDeleteBlargh, enjoyable episode, but it was irritating that I figured out the plot twist approximately 2 seconds in.
ReplyDeleteI think what's being complained about is not positive posts, but the "It's not fair to complain about a children's show" posts, that we do see a lot of right now. These posts aren't helping people who are disappointed by the ponies not being awesome for them this weekend.
ReplyDeleteSure, unbridled negativity isn't good for a fan site, and I'm all in favor of trying to cheer people up.
ReplyDeleteI have a thought, one that perhaps may help with mutual understanding.
ReplyDeleteI suggest... that possibly there are (at least) two distinct kinds of fans for MLP:FIM, and each is after something very different, each was attracted for a different thing they liked.
ReplyDeleteIt took me a while before I figured out what was going on.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I caught Rainbow's voice slipping into Applejack's voice a couple of times.
And my final note is that the real hero of this episode will be whoever builds some kind of safety railing around the giant cliff edge that apparently has always been just on the edge of Poneyville.
@ponyvangelist
ReplyDeleteAnother brony that knows!
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I believe that Season 2 is still superior to Season 1.
Amidst all of this discussion about TMMDW, I wish to make a side statement.
ReplyDelete*ahem*
I truly believe that the dam outside of Ponyville is called Hoofer Dam.
There, I said it. Please return to the discussion about why some of us were so terribly disappointed with this episode.
Actually an episode with Dash an heroing and the consequences of it would make for an interesting episode :)
ReplyDeleteYay! I have my own page all to myself!
ReplyDeletenot anymore hahahahaha
ReplyDeleteI was still pretty annoyed at the Dash hatred being spammed on many forums. I'm starting to lose faith in the community. I wouldn't be surprised if there were more offshoots of the bronies in the future.
ReplyDelete@SajinZero
ReplyDeleteThe lack of power-lines leading awy form it, plus comment from Lauren about her own head canon for how electronic-looking technology can be shown make it plausible that it is a hydro-ARCANIC dam, much like the Luxfont in the Webcomic "Tales of the Questor"
Hm... re-examining this ep, I think a better twist would've been that the "Mare-Do-Well" was setting up the accidents so (s)he could swoop in and save ponies, but make a fatal miscalculation in her final stunt, so RD would've had to put her petty anger aside to help save the day. The MDW would then gallop into the sunset, her identity forever a mystery, and RD would still learn her lesson in humility.
ReplyDeleteOH COME ON! The videos been taken down, along with the entire channel!
ReplyDeletethe episode doesn't exist in youtube T.T
ReplyDeleteDamn hasbro trolls are flagging the episodes again... this seriously has to stop.
ReplyDeleteAnd the videos are gone.
ReplyDeleteGive it a couple of weeks and give the guy a break. His grandfather just died and he will want to have a few days off while he takes care of his family guys.
It's just a show, real life is more important.
