Well, I sort of expected this turn of events; we already know that the 'elements' don't have physical embodiments, and the necklaces just seemed to form when the elements of harmony were used (probably for marketing purposes on Hasbro's part, though not sure). Discord effectively hid the elements when he entranced all Twilight's friends.
However, I wasn't expecting Discord to let Twilight Sparkle and her friends to keep trying to find the elements: it seems out of character, and maybe that's because of those limits on violence/meanness children's shows have. At any rate, I'd still watch it.
I don't see this two parter ending in the traditional "Taste the rainbow motherfucker!" of the elements of harmony. Discord is just too much like Q. I expect a lesson learned about friendship, and then he returns into the Continuum.

Am I the only one who wants to see the CMC use their skills (Design, singing, dancing) somehow? I think that would be a good idea, I figure that they released them in the first place, so they'd want to somehow fix the mess. Theory two of mine, judging from the episode's description, Twilight discovers the real meaning behind the riddle and shows that they still have the EoH. Theory three of mine is a combo of the above with some Luna. I want me so me Luna!
I wish everypony would stop giving the cutie mark crusaders a hard time for releasing discord. Celestia herself said that wasn't what happened. It was the Elements being used by new ponies, thus severing Celestia and Luna's connection to them, that broke the spell imprisoning Discord. It just took a little while for him to break out of the statue. It was probably Discord breaking free that made the CMC fight, not the other way around.
It strikes me that Discord still has a win condition in his game that is valid (Find the Elements), and he's taking on the role of a Dungeon Master rather than an straight up villain, so he's not planning to "win," because he really doesn't have a horse in this race.
He has rules in place for his chaos, and he's hesitant to break them, although he will if the ponies need railroading. Discord is also chaos incarnate, so I'd imagine he knows that perpetual chaos is unstable as a living condition, and if it became the norm, he loses his power. So I'm banking on the fact he's chaotic enough to throw his own game once he gets bored of it, and be willing to submit to the Elements, lowest moral denominator being he can just break out again, and chaos it up when no one expects it. But IMO, he seems to want more than wreaking havoc, and wants to teach somebody something before he goes back in the box.
Tag-team ninja'd. But are the two goals mutually exclusive? Would be tragic for him to teach by example, but he seems self aware enough to pull it off. Or am I reading to far into his actions?
Well, Discord IS a nearly all-powerful Chaos Spirit. His games wouldn't be any fun if he KNEW he was going to win. He needs to give his opponent at least some SMALL chance of figuring it all out. Victory is so much more satisfying when there's a degree of uncertainty about it. Judging from Discord's posture at the beginning of the clip, I want to say that he was watching something akin to a show, mayhaps the Mane 6 (sans Rainbow) fighting amongst themselves, then eventually splitting up (seeing as it looks like its just Twi and Discord in the crater).

I'm beginning to think that the "twists and turns" were just a ploy to draw the Mane 6 into the labyrinth for easier separation and corruption.
"Finding them back where you began." I used to think this meant back in the castle of the Royal Sisters, but not anymore.
Consider the following: -Season 1: Episode 2. The Elements needed a spark to activate them. To quote Twi, "The spark ignited inside me, when I realized that you all are my friends!" That's when the EoH activated (began), right after Twi acknowledged the others as her friends.
On that note, I think that Twi will have to befriend the others once again to get the Elements back.

Ok, good point there, I sincerely apologize to the writers that I messed up at reading between the lines. I still want some Luna, though. It would be nice to see the CMC start at least acknowledge that maybe designing, singing, and dancing be their goal to get their Cutie Marks. I imagine it won't be in this episode, though. Q was originally Discord until the Royal Sisters imprisioned/blocked him so he had to escape to the Star Trek Universe and all his exploits with Picard were really just his way of warming up for his return to Equestria!
Discord seems oddly generous, basically outright telling Twilight where to find the elements. Either he wants her to get them back (knowing that they're useless as long as the Mane Cast are turned?), or...?

The 3 things I've learned in my life on how to deal with beings of chaos: 1.Never trust a word of what they say, 2.Always keep your eyes on them at all times but never make eye contact, and 3.First chance you get, beat them senseless with cold iron. I know the last one is for dealing with Faries but its a good problem solver when it comes to it.
Where they began? I bet it's either their respective birthplaces, or perhaps Discord never intended to give them back the Elements and he'll just twist the second part of the riddle into something like "Well, if you could go back in time to when you got the Elements first...". He mislead them the first time, why start telling the truth now?

Well, Discord IS a nearly all-powerful Chaos Spirit. His games wouldn't be any fun if he KNEW he was going to win. He needs to give his opponent at least some SMALL chance of figuring it all out. Victory is so much more satisfying when there's a degree of uncertainty about it. Speculation time!
Judging from Discord's posture at the beginning of the clip, I want to say that he was watching something akin to a show, mayhaps the Mane 6 (sans Rainbow) fighting amongst themselves, then eventually splitting up (seeing as it looks like its just Twi and Discord in the crater).
Riddle time.
I'm beginning to think that the "twists and turns" were just a ploy to draw the Mane 6 into the labyrinth for easier separation and corruption.
"Finding them back where you began." I used to think this meant back in the castle of the Royal Sisters, but not anymore.
Consider the following:
-Season 1: Episode 2. The Elements needed a spark to activate them. To quote Twi, "The spark ignited inside me, when I realized that you all are my friends!" That's when the EoH activated (began), right after Twi acknowledged the others as her friends.
On that note, I think that Twi will have to befriend the others once again to get the Elements back.
...
Either that, or I could be completely wrong. Nevertheless, bring on Episode 2! My body is ready.

Ok, good point there, I sincerely apologize to the writers that I messed up at reading between the lines. I still want some Luna, though. It would be nice to see the CMC start at least acknowledge that maybe designing, singing, and dancing be their goal to get their Cutie Marks. I imagine it won't be in this episode, though. (Same for Luna.)

Discord seems oddly generous, basically outright telling Twilight where to find the elements. Either he wants her to get them back (knowing that they're useless as long as the Mane Cast are turned?), or...?

If you didn't want to hug Twilight at the end of last episode, you sure want to now. Having her friends turned into jerks and now told that what she's just been through was pointless. And the "maybe the magic of friendship can help you" line -- just rubbing salt into the wound...

I believe he means "back where you began" as in that room where they defeated Nightmare Moon. Where their "magic of friendship" began. Just my thoughts.

The 3 things I've learned in my life on how to deal with beings of chaos: 1.Never trust a word of what they say, 2.Always keep your eyes on them at all times but never make eye contact, and 3.First chance you get, beat them senseless with cold iron. I know the last one is for dealing with Faries but its a good problem solver when it comes to it.
