The fact that the episode before it already focuses on RD suggests that the masked pony will likely be the main character of this one, but we'll see.
Also I can totally see Scootaloo "switching sides" to this new pony

Sounds like this masked pony is going to be to Rainbow Dash what Trixie is to Twilight Sparkle.
Most of Dash's fame and attention comes from her flying skills, and for someone to outdo her in that regard, they'd need wings... So I'd rule out Trixie.
Derpy's a wildcard. I kinda doubt they'd give her such a major role, though.

Seeing as how Rainbow Dash had ZERO episodes all to herself, I'm ok with this, even though there is no guarantee that she'll be the soul focus of this or the pet episode.

What I'd like to see is a reveal that said new masked hero is a crook in disguise; this would be revealed after Ditzy and a group of like-minded clumsy meddlers caught him or her in a malfunctioning trap. Add in her trying to figure out why her trap didn't work and wishing that she had a nifty catch phrase like Zoinks or Jinkies and you've got instant comic gold.

MLP:FIM has been unexpectedly successful; and copyright issues are negotiable with the will and the way (money), so "impossible" is too strong a word.
I still reckon it's *unlikely* because... why? It's a bit like a certain type of Doctor Who fan who on the merest rumours of future episodes go off on fantasies along the lines of "It's the Rani! It's the Axons! It's the Ice Warriors!" And it never is, because the people actually *making* the show have an imagination and like to introduce new monsters...

Superhorses? Ok this is a show about colorful, talking ponies that live in a world where the sun is raised by a princess Celestia and clouds are made in factories in the sky. So I never thought I would say this: “That sounds too weird for FiM.” Maybe because it remembers me of those old DBZ in which Son Gohan disguised himself as superhero out of nowhere.
So who’s this masked hero? Could it be a new character? A new villain, perhaps? After all they said there would be more villains. But since the character is masked, it’s probably some pony we already know in a body suit. I doubt its Gilda, she’s too easy to recognize by both the characters and the fans. Maybe it’s AJ? I don’t know how they could pull it off but it would be funny.

Unfortunately though, we don't know what the Writers are thinking, so trying to guess what a brand new character will be like in one sentence is hard. All we can assume is that, it's probably a Very Fast Pegasus, since that is Rainbow Dashes defining trait(Clears the skies in 10 seconds flat), and to steal her thunder, they have to be as fast as her.
And since Firefly was the original design of Rainbow Dash, I think it would be quite cool if this Masked Pony was Firefly, or at least her Colour Scheme. The Original being the one trying to steal the spotlight would be quite cool.

Derpy, we find out that her alter-ego is the Muffinator, a no nonsense wise cracking mare who always gets the job done, no matter the cost. Everything we have seen with Derpy has been an act, and now she must put away her life as a mail-mare and save Equestria from a mysterious alien force known only as 'The Reapers'. Rainbow Dash must overcome her stubborn ways and help her, on a mission none expect them to survive.

All of the Wonderbolts are masked, so masked ponies are nothing new for the show. Still, it'll be fun seeing them play with the masked hero trope!

Either it's a new/background pony, in which case we'll get a new fandom favourite ship.
Or it's a main/secondary pony, in which case we'll get some more characterisation.

Actually, wait. It doesn't specify anything about the masked pony being a girl or a guy, nor does it specify whether the thunder in question is flying ability. I predict that the first part of the episode will show Dash being helpful and heroic and a role model for the town, basking in their admiration, before a masked pony comes to one-up her in being a hero. She'll get jealous - probably come up with some tricks to get rid of this newcomer - before the identity is revealed and Dash learns the lesson of not being jealous and trusting in her friends to not replace her simply based on skill.

Y'know what's wonderful? We already have information on eight episodes... And yet that still leaves a whopping 18 episodes to look forward to knowing about. 22 to actually see still! So much pony in our future~
Anyway, I'm casting a vote for Derpy. I doubt it's actually that, but most people tend to vote for what they want, anyway. So whatever. I think it would be amazing.
So far, the likely candidates are "New Pony" (weather male or female, this hasn't been revealed, just yet), Derpy Hooves (wearing either something with a muffin-based theme or a new-and improved version of her bag-girl costume from Luna Eclipsed), Ditzy Doo (who was revealed to NOT be Derpy Hooves a ridiculously long time ago when Faust said she didn't want to step on anyone's "Derpy love", and more recently, when a storyboard from Luna Eclipsed referred to the wall-eyed equine as "Derpy Hooves"), the pony that wore that Ermac costume in Luna Eclipsed (Ermac is a Mortal Combat character, so, that makes this at least the fourth time FiM has referenced a work for older audiences, along with Star Wars, The Matrix and Benny Hill), Trixie (mastering the telekinetic art of self-levitation) and Firefly (if Hasbro has an interest in reacquiring or borrowing any of the lost Generation 1 ponies from whoever ran away with them in the first place).
But, seriously, if it is Firefly, I really hope she wouldn't be displayed as a villain. I don't think Faust would be too happy about it, either. We don't know that this character is a villain, any more than we know the character is a female, a pony or even their own name. We do not yet know what this character's true intentions are, at this point and I could really see it going in so many ways.
If I'm already seeing this episode correctly, I want to see Dash win, as in, rise to the occasion and beat this masked pony in whatever the competition may be. Mind you, the previous episode may change my mind, but if this is suppose to be some sort of "Rocky"-esqe episode, I want to see her win!

Inspiration, It's Surprise, A.K.A. Proto-Pinky, member of the wonderbolts, With Pinkie's randomitity and skills equal to or better than dash. and she's the most likely to swoop(Swooping is bad) in and decide being a superhero would be awesome.

Somehow, I feel that if the E/I was still intact, it'd be a pony with a disability and would end with a moral about the abilities and inabilities of others won't stop them from doing things others do.
