• League of Extraodrinary Gamers Charity Event

Lyra and Octavia play video games.  They are not Extraordinary Gamers, but even they donated a few bits to the make a wish foundation in honor of the League of Extraordinary Gamers event going on here.

Over the next 158 hours (Give or take a few due to my lateness), they will be marathoning all sorts of stuff in the name of charity!

So far they are currently at a whopping $1683.39 out of their goal of $10,000.  If you want to help out, head over to the channel, with an alternate below!

They also said to post EQUESTRIA DAILY RAID if you come from here once you get into the comment section.

    5. I really don't want to be a party pooper, but the Make A Wish foundation is one of the least efficient charities around in terms of aid-per-dollar, as explained here:
      http://lesswrong.com/lw/37f/efficient_charity/

To summarize: the Make A Wish Foundation's 2009 annual report states that they gave wishes to 13,471 kids, while their total expenditure on "programs and support services" was $203,865,550.
This implies that they spend an average of $15,134 to grant each wish.

By contrast, a charity called VillageReach distributes vaccinations to infants in Mozambique. A similar analysis of their books shows that VillageReach SAVES A CHILD'S LIFE for, on average, $545.

For $15,134, the Make A Wish foundation can grant a wish to one ill child. This is a good thing, and the last thing I want to do is disparage charitable work. But for the same donation, you could save the lives of twenty seven children. As charitably-inclined individuals, it behooves us (heh, see what I did there?) not just to donate, but to try to maximize the effect of our donations.

Good point. If people are a bit aware of what they donate to, they can do a lot more good with the same ammount.

Okay, you'll save more lives donating to charities like that, but the world is not just a numbers game. You'll save those kids from the possibility of a few diseases, sure, yet many will still die from starvation, violence, or live out their lives in miserable 3rd world poverty.

Thanks, but I'd rather give a dying child I can actually relate to on some emotional level the meager $10 that I can afford. I'm a terrible person for giving to the "wrong" charity, I know.

    10. You're not a terrible person in any sense of the word, anon; you're still donating your own money to charity, after all. I'm a psychologist, I understand completely the importance of being emotionally invested in results. Just a difference of opinion, I guess: I operate under the general principal "life is good, death is bad, no exceptions". Anything that increases the probability of a human being's survival is better than something that does not. Especially when it does so twenty seven times over.

    11. Hmm... Raiding in the name of good?

How are you ponies not okay with this? When something else happens, we raid at the drop of a frickin hat, but when it's for a good cause? Nope. Not happening.

    13. this reeks. we're being targeted.
Seth should be ashamed of himself for being other people's bitch and advertising for them just because they know we have a history of being generous.

Shame on them, and shame on seth for thinking this would get him karma points within the community by taking advantage of us.

Well, aren't you Mr. Negativity. And this ad is bad how? Last I read, it's for a good cause and from a credible team of people, the Creator of this group being a part of TheSpeedGamers and this group specifically are partners with ED. Not to mention this puts the fandom in a positive light. Nobody said you HAD to donate y'know or is FORCING you to.
