• My Little Dashie: The Game

Someone named SonicMon over on Deviant Art is currently working on a video game version of My Little Dashie.   How do you make a game out of fanfic about some dude raising Rainbow Dash? RPG Style of course! It sort of plays like a mix of those old Tamogachi toys, Pokemon, and a choose your adventure game.

Right now it's primarily an engine demo with a bunch of random features thrown in, but it looks like there is some potential here for something neat later on.

Check the game out here!  The creator is looking for feedback in comments for future editions of it, so be sure to leave him some.  This is far from a completed project, so expect a bit of revamping.

    1. Why don't we just crown it "Lord of all fics" whilst we're at it?

I have no idea why the fandom likes this fic so much...

    3. A "My Little Dashie" GAME???

OH MAN, THIS IS TOO MUCH.

    4. The fic is multi-layered like Pan's Labyrinth and emotionally moves people through its description of the environmental place settings, etc.

I'm not sure what I think about this game but it sounds interesting.

    12. This game is awesome if just for the ability to beat up Twilight Sparkel for fun. After a couple ranks you can one shot her :D

    13. It's a good fic and all, but seriously?

2 sequels and a game? That's just taking it too far.

      ReplyDelete
    14. This game is terrible and honestly could be made in under an hour if the (hardly original) art resources were there.

I was at least expecting a competent Pokemon battle engine clone minus the animation.

      ReplyDelete
    15. This game... honestly the only similarity is the name and you find dash in a box. Otherwise, the game is basically completely different so far.

Would have been better if it were just that, but no. :/

He had to go introduce battles and like said above, self-inserts.

      Bleh.

    21. How the heck I'm supposed to play if I can't even beat Walter's Twilight?

      Aw, come on!

      ReplyDelete
    22. I haven't read the fic, but I somehow doubt it included Pokemon style battles between fillies.

It's done well, and shows promise, but that aspect seems out of place.

      ReplyDelete
    23. Just....no. This story is to good to be represented in any way except for maybe a movie, and it would have to be done REALLY well.

      ReplyDelete
    24. @Rafasde

You start with 2 items for free that will allow you to stomp TS. The money that you get from that battle will pay for buying replacements for the items. Don't go for FS until after at least 3 battles with TS.

If you went for tank then just growl repeatedly and eventually they won't do damage any more, extends the time to win, but makes it easy. Always spend upgrade points on def/health. Defence is the easiest class, but requires lots of time.

If you went for attack then focus on buying AP minor potions (the big ones seem to be bugged), then use those potions to keep a string of powerful attacks going. Spend upgrade points on attack so you do more damage, beat FS several times so you can buy loads of potions and beat Luna with a constant stream of unreplied attacks, you should never want to get attacked by Luna's strong attacks if you are attack class.

If you went for balanced then push F5 and pick a better class :P

Seriously balanced sucks, its bonus is more AP regen, but that requires you to spend upgrade points on health/def too, as Luna will 1 shot you, no way to use regenerated AP if you're dead.

      ReplyDelete
    25. @awh
What are you talking about? The author never described anything about the protagonist so that the reader could self insert HIMSELF.

      ReplyDelete
    26. @Ysalamiri

No, it's just using the fic name to get an EqD post and looks like it worked.

    27. Oh god not more about this fucking piece of shit story god why just let it end please

      ReplyDelete
    28. It's a nice game... buuuuut, it'd be awesome if it were just a visual novel.

      ReplyDelete
    29. I never read My Little Dashie, but this game was just really weird. I mean, people finding little ponies in boxes and then letting them fight eachother?

      ReplyDelete
    30. MLD was a pretty decently written story although I personally did not understand why anyone could call it "sad". It was emotional, sure, but to me "sad" denotes some form of negativity which definitely was not present. She just "moved away". That's not sad, that's everyday mundane life.

I do think that for a fun wish-fulfillment tale that takes place in a "fantastical reality" setting it is treated with far too much importance and seriousness by many fans.

Now as for the game... I believe my initial reaction comment can double as a review.

      ReplyDelete
    31. I see no correlation between this game and the story, except for the title. Which I do not think is a bad thing. MLD is a poorly-written story without any character development whose entire appeal is that it can make you "feel sad". Meh.

      ReplyDelete
    32. Wait, you mean there´s no Twilight Sparkle filly in the My little Dashie fic and there´s no fighting is magic stuff? Dangit and i just wanted to give this a try after playing this game.

      ReplyDelete
    33. Can someone who thinks MLD is well-written please explain to me why you say this? From what I remember the fic is not only poorly-constructed on a sentence level, but also chock full of simplistic teenage angst and whining.

I'm fine with sad stories and I'm fine with angst. I'm even fine with whining. But if you're going to write that stuff you better not write it with the intelligence level of a 15-year-old. That is, don't make the story a jeremiad about how humans are evil because they don't pick up trash and treat each other like shit. People are complex. Write with a little humility, for chrissakes.

I mean, fuck, look at the construction of a recent fic like Yours Truly (overrated and star-bombed, yes, but high-quality and deserving of praise) and compare the writing with that of My Little Dashie. It's just baffling to me that people put these on the same level.

    35. A game based entirely around moral choices that are very black and white. Yah not liking it. I don't even like the fic that much. The main character is an absolute idiot.

      ReplyDelete
    36. @Mad Brochacho

Agreedx1000000. Didn't shed a single tear throughout the entire story. Can't judge Yours Truly though, since I've never read it.

Sure, the fic wasn't the worst I've ever read, but the amount of praise it has been getting is starting to get to creepy levels.

    37. Ow, as one of the very few members still active in the English-speaking Tamagotchi fandom, it pains me when it's spelled as "Tamogachi".

      ReplyDelete
    38. @RanYakumo

I don't see MLD getting lots of praise being creepy (unless they went beyond to the point of creepiness).

Maybe I'm the only one who think's this...ah well.

      ReplyDelete
    39. Games imply fun, but this will require extra servings of sad. Not sure how that's gonna be worked out

      ReplyDelete
    40. @Mad Brochacho

MLD is rlatively well written not on a technical level but on a baseline of effective storytelling.

It has a story to tell, it portrays it's themes and characters well. No there's no character development but it's written as a first person perspective experiencial, like watching a series of home movies without context.

Like I said before, it's wish fulfillment and fantastical reality. Taking it too seriously is a mistake that can be applied to both fans and detractors alike.

I say "relatively" well written, because while it's no masterpiece by any means (I kinda wanna slap the guy who compared it to Pan's Labyrinth) it is significantly superior to the plethora of painfully bad wish fulfillment FiM fiction out there. And that alone is deserving of respect.

Also I'm not sure where you are coming from with the "humans are bad" angle. The fic only lamented the general societal apathy that serves to lull us into letting the magic in our lives wash away. It was a little melodramatic, but mot like on the level of a JRPG.

I don't dislike the fic itself, although I'm not a huge fan either. But I am a little disturbed by how gaga people are over it.
The IDEA I can understand being enamored with, but the fic itself I rated 4 stars which I stand by.

      ReplyDelete
    41. At least for me, MLD worked. Yes, the setup wasn't terribly believable, and the main character is droopy. But that's why Dashie coming into his life is so precious to him, and why her leaving is the [Sad] moment it's supposed to be. A less dependent pony-adopter gives a much different story.

In comparison, most [Sad] stories seem pretty bad. The-cast-grows-up-and-apart has been done to death, and wasn't a particularly great idea in the first place. If you're going to subvert the show's theme of friendship, it's wise to replace it with another positive. We like these characters, and fade-to-greyness is not an ending with mass brony appeal.

Call MLD a medium-sized fish in a small pond.

      ReplyDelete
    42. @WhitFox

My problem with "sad" is that it's so subjective. SO many of them are darkfics with a sad tag just because the authors care so much about evoking emotion instead of telling a story they end up going to traumatizing extremes.
That is by far why sadfics above all else (gluefics and clopfics included) are my least favorite.

MLD did it more or less "right". Presented an emotionally charged scenario for what it plainly is and let the readers subjectively relate to it instead of trying to force the emotion on the reader.

      ReplyDelete
    43. This game is pretty cool...
      I eagerly await its completion.

    44. My Little Dashie was probably the best wish-fulfillment fan fiction I've ever read. But that doesn't mean much when I'm comparing it to the likes of Sonichu and any number of terrible "CHECK OUT MY OC HER NAME IS THE SAME AS MY USERNAME BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING AND I'M PAIRING HER UP WITH AN OOC VERSION OF MY FAVORITE ANIME CHARACTER" fics.

    46. ALL right, this game is somewhat unwinnable. My defence character has 77 attack power, and is level 8 and still I can't even damage luna by a sliver even after I fully stared her down. So unless if I somehow acquire the motivation the grind out fluttershy a couple dozen more times. I won't be using my defensive character to try and beat luna.

    50. My Guide

EST time to beat game ~15 minutes

      *general notes
-assumes you are using an offensive class.
-put all your upgrade points into attack power you will use consumables to make up for lack of HP and AP. (The health, defense and AP regen stats are worthless)
-Make sure you spend all upgrade points when you get them.
-You will be using a lot of consumables throughout this session. (pretty much exclusively AP potions.)
-The idea is that you want to defeat the enemy quickly so that you don't get hit.
-That you constantly go back to the store to restock on consumables. (mainly AP potions)

1st. Beat Twilight spamming dashing blow (whatever attacks you want) But make sure you use the consumables you start with to beat her. (if you fail to beat her even with the consumables you will be screwed. And you will need to start a new character to retry the game)

Then beat her about 3 more times being liberal in the expenditure of the consumables. (but be willing to tank a few hits for the extra AP generated)

Once you can reliably 2-shot her using dashing blow and have 4 or more AP potions start grinding fluttershy.

Again with fluttershy tank a few hits and use dashing blow and the AP potions to defeat her.

Fluttershy drops enough money to completely ameliorate the costs of 3 AP potions. So if that is what it takes to beat her quickly. Do so.

Once you can 3-shot fluttershy and have a pattern that minimizes downtime, just keep on farming her for EXP and money.

Once you get to level 5 with around 81 attack

power and have about 10 AP potions. Save your game and try luna.

With luna just drink all your AP potions and
attack her exclusively with the "fly" attack (it
seems to ignore armor or something) and with about
6-9 attacks she too will fall like the rest. Don't
worry about getting attacked. She won't get enough
AP to start using her counterattacks against you
      in time.

    51. @Sgt Byrd Hey Sgt Byrd, this is SonicMon,

It's really awesome that you found out all that stuff. But there is a hidden cheat you might not have discovered.

If you keep chatting to Dashie, you will accumulate more monies. This is to help people who have trouble leveling up.

      ReplyDelete
    52. @Mike

To me, games are an experience. The developer is taking you on an interactive journey. You choose the path, and you set out on a quest!

But there's battles too, if you want...

      ReplyDelete
    53. The game is good, but there is one problem. He called it My Little Dashie: The Game. This has nearly nothing to do with MLD at all, aside from you finding Rainbow in a box. Luna wasn't even in it for heavens sake! What he needs to do is scrap the title and instead put more pokemon into it. Have it so you can pick your pony and choose your fighting style. The game is really brought down by the title because is saying that it's something it isn't. If he changes the title and adds the other ponies for selection, this could be getting somewhere. But as long as it's called MLD, I'm out.

      ReplyDelete
    54. i tried reading the fic, but to be honest i didn't care for it... it was too mushy and it was trying to be emotional in all the wrong ways... The game just proves how overrated this whole thing is. "Let's just slap the title on some lame game so people will think it's good and I'll get a post on EqD." Come on guys we're harder workers than that! Do we really want our fandom to be defined by cheap crap like this. I don't know about you but I want this fandom's true quality work to be shown before cheap stuff like this. Why is this rated 5 stars????

      ReplyDelete
    55. @Mitchell Green

Hey, great game, I enjoyed it :)

Thanks for the cheat, that will be helpful early on. The money gained by talking takes a while, though. And after a few attack upgrades, repeatedly stomping FS gives money faster. That's how I rushed to Luna, by managing AP minor potions to stomp FS with starting health. That fight gives lots of money (more than you spend on potions to beat her) and exp.

Several people have been having trouble damaging Luna as Attack class. I also found that the level 1 and 3 attacks, Tackle and Dashing Blow, do no damage, or too little damage to notice. Fly does damage. So beating Luna for me was just about getting enough money to spam AP minor potions and attack without reply. I only upgraded attack stat so I couldn't even take one hit from Luna lol.

Could you answer a question, there is a stat called Morality, I don't know what it is, or what modifies it. Only that mine stayed at -1 for what seemed like the whole game.

      ReplyDelete
    56. @Sgt Byrd

      Hey Sgt Byrd,

The cheat was implanted recently for that reason. I am completely redoing the game now, so that difficulty should be nullified.

Yes, a glitch had occured in the coding. The problem was when Fluttershy was added to the game, the data used for the first and third attacks fell onto Fluttershy, meaning you were damaging someone, just the wrong pony.

Morality occurs when make a good or bad decision, however, every time you win a fight you SHOULD be able to obtain +1 morality. I don't understand why yours stays at -1. It's something I'll look into in the refreshed version.

Thank you for replying. God bless, and have an awesome day.

      Dear ShakeNDake,

Thank you for trying the My Little Dashie: The Game.

I noticed you found story differences between the game and the fanfic. It is intentional. While the game is based off the same idea as the fanfic, I didn't want to create a clone. I wanted people who haven't read the fanfic, to read it with a whole new set of eyes.

It's double the fun, shall I put it?

So yes, as the story develops, it will move further and further away. Please note, though, that Fluttershy and Luna are both placeholder enemies, and may or may not feature in the final version.

Thanks for your comment! God bless, and have an awesome day!

Well, think about Pokemon. You find them in little balls, and then your rival goes.

"Hey Ash, wanna go and willingly abuse these two pokemon in a cage match?"

      "Shucks, ok!"

I based it off that idea. XD

Yes, I know. It's stupid. But Pokemon never said why, since Pokemon has lived with man since the beginning, they make them fight.

You mean *sniff* I was *sniff* accidentally hurting *sniff* Fluttershy when I was trying to hurt Luna? ....

      B'AWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAA

      How could I, I'm a bastard.

I could deal with beating Fluttershy up to win the fight that she was happy to engage in by sending her rabbit army from hell to hurt me, but beating her up when she wasn't fighting back is too much to bear.

      I'M SORRY FLUTTERSHY WAAAAAAA.

Also maybe put a dead end ending at the start, where you can abandon Dashie at the first morality choice and get a game over because Dashie died without your help. That way restarting costs almost no time, but lulz can also be had.

Like that interactive Vinyl Scratch game where you can ask to be her friend, she'll say something along the lines of "really" and you can say "lol no" to her face for fun.

Funny, I was just reading your journal post about that. Allons-y.

      ReplyDelete
    63. @Sgt Byrd

Speaking of the upgrade, now when I play against Luna, she can attack without me pushing defend.

ie, I use a potion and have over 50 AP, use an attack, and the controls don't reappear, Luna just launches into her attack. I didn't have to push defend. But both the other battles allow you to attack for as long as you have AP.

Obviously I put all my points into attack upgrades, so now I can't sustain her first hit, I managed to farm xp from Fluttershy until I got 2 more points, I put them both in health, and 140 health still wasn't enough to take one hit :D

      ReplyDelete
    64. @Sgt Byrd

      To Sgt Byrd,

That was intentional. You see, people have complained that they can just stock AP and rape the opponent. Well, not anymore.

Luna is an intentional wakeup call. It's as if she pressed the defense button, now she can make her move. It makes it more turn-based, and more thrilling. Because she could have mercy on you, or she could kill you in one blow.

Definitely focus on Defence more than health. Defence will keep you standing longer. Instead of health, save up and buy full restores and Minor AP Pots. You'll thank me later.

Try to unlock the achievement for beating her. It is so satisfying. And see if you can beat me to it. I haven't finished my own game yet.

Which means I fail at my own game?

      ReplyDelete
    65. @Mitchell Green

LOL that was my only strategy, just rape with AP potions. It still works against TS/FS, though.

What is the point of the expensive AP potions if you can't even use them fully against Luna now? I mean you can only spend 16 AP per turn now, so the bulk AP potion seems a bit overpriced.

I'll try upgrading defence next time instead of health.
