ReplyDeleteI seem to recall seeing you in several other places really ripping on 'Becoming Popular,' and you've never really explained why. I personally don't understand how anyone could have a problem with it - it's Rarity, an extremely talented singer, singing about how she wants to be well-known, which is a huge part of her character and is in no way reproachable unless it's the only defining characteristic and is done maliciously. Rarity has plenty of facets to her character, and nothing she does is with the intent of hurting anyone else.

ReplyDeleteYou're saying you hate it, but not telling us why. I'm genuinely curious, because I personally thought the lyrics were great. The beat wasn't terrible. I'll meet you halfway and agree it wasn't great, but not terrible either - just meh. The lyrics captured Rarity's character, and they did have the potential to come off as vapid and shallow, but that's only taking the lyrics into account and not also the stellar delivery which conveyed a lot of depth and emotion, especially in the final few lines.
So yeah, tell me why you hated the lyrics.

ReplyDeleteYou seem extremely angry at something very much not worth the anger, and which I really feel you misinterpreted. She doesn't care about appearances and popularity because she's shallow and self-centered. Element of Generosity, remember? She's a businesswoman, and in her sort of field social connections are vital. Thus, "becoming popular" isn't so she can impress these pea-brained ponies and feel good about herself, although that's definitely a side effect. It's all about furthering her career. Plus, again, you're only looking at the lyrics. The delivery and inflections convey a lot more than the words themselves do at face value.
Plus, if you're picking on them for lessons about friendship, then I fully expect you to hate "At the Gala." It's all about each pony's self-centered goal. Sure, Twi and Fluttershy want to make friends, but AJ wants to make money, Dash wants to establish social connections with the Wonderbolts - which is, I might add, very similar to Rarity's reasons for becoming popular - Rarity wants to marry into royalty, and Pinkie just wants to party. Not exactly a message of glowing harmony and togetherness.

ReplyDeleteAlright, so that's progress. I honestly hope I can convince you to look at the song differently, because according to what you said it's a really bad point for the season and if I can convince you to cut it some slack maybe you'll enjoy the season more.
And yeah, that point is true, but the end result is "ponies are selfish and split up, then learn the lesson about friendship." Rarity went through the same thing with "Becoming Popular," except on an individual basis and thus with more time to develop the plot behind it and thus make it seem less shallow. Rarity learned her lesson in the end, and the song itself was a good vehicle to set it up with in the first place.

On the history of Equestria ... I appreciate the effort, but this is part of the problem. And by problem, I mean taking canon more seriously than the show's writers do.
ReplyDeleteThe writers are trying to tell a cute story about the tribes getting together. They even explicitly did it as a play, so details don't have to be accurate. I don't think they fact-checked it against other episodes. Building up complicated theories to remove internal conflict, only helps the series if they make Equestria more entertaining and inviting. And that's not the direction they generally go.
I'll add that if you look at the comments here at ED, the world-builders seem generally happy with what they got. It's the bronies devoted to character moments who were nonplussed. Even if you can fix the history, that isn't going to help them enjoy the episode more.
Maybe I should have stayed awake a little longer for this roundup. But I was already done about fifteen minutes before. So let's see. As usual, plenty of interesting news bits, an Android app that doesn't do me any good since my phone has some kind of mystery operating system, the continuing invasion of ponies into every day life, and more that would seem pointless in commenting since it's already there. As for best pony, my answer will always be Fluttershy. Yay!

ReplyDeleteYes, "saucy" as an adjective has been around for ages, generally referring to things that are boldly inappropriate for polite company though shy of outright obscene.
So really, in terms of this site, it's a substitute for "suggestive".

For me personally, Twilight Sparkle is best pony, and the other five main ponies are ranked so close to each other (and so close to Twilight) that it's useless to try to rank them; on any given day, any of them can be second-best or worst pony. (Of the mane cast; worst pony overall is probably Upper Crust.)

Actually, the only time I found Pinkie Pie to be even vaguely menacing was when she was Discorded; in "Party of One", when she was straight-haired ("Pinkamina"), I just found her sad and pitiable.

I hereby propose the SpitfirePlot (or SP) as being the maximum amount of sauciness a pic can have while still being appropriate for posting in a Drawfriend without a sauce link. E.g.: The first Spitfire recruiting poster is about 0.7SP, the second would be exactly 1SP, and that Rarity/Twilight pic from last night's Drawfriend would be 1.3SP.

I suspect that's the main reason, and the long-established use for "sauce" pointed out by @DeRockProject helped cement its use here (though "sauce" has long been used to ask for the source of non-porn images too).
Oof, that King5 piece was quite... the stereotypical reaction. I'd hope they'd be good, but unfortunately not.

Also, "repressed feelings"? Really? I never had any desire to play with dolls as a kid (I never really had any desire to play with cars either) -- I know that a single datum can't disprove a trend (which is what the sociologist was going for), but I feel like most of the bronies I know are the same way. While it's good to buck gender roles and expectations, misrepresentation as deviants is not an accurate portrayal.

They didn't quite specify how long ago Equestria was founded, we know Celestia has only been ruling for roughly the past 1000 years, prior to that Discord was ruling, and the defeat of Discord and the banishing of Nightmare Moon must have occurred quite close together (maybe only a year or two if even that apart). As far as the alicorns go, I would like to refer you to that genetics chart that popped up a little over a month ago. Perhaps the gene that causes alicorns has not mutated yet in the ponies, and even once it does there's still a very small chance for any pony to inherent the necessary genes.

Timeline: Page 394, nice Harry Potter reference. Also, he seemed to do a pretty spot on job as far as accuracy goes, except he could have mentioned that a draconequus had an appearance on a drawing somewhere in the episode.

ReplyDeleteSorry for not being clearer; the Spitfire pic I was referring to is actually the second one you linked to. It was accepted for a Drawfriend and Cereal Velocity was going to use it as a header for a nightly roundup (like Rarity for tonight's), but he changed his mind and used another pic as the header. (Probably the right decision, even though I don't see anything wrong with the pic.)

I take it you haven't had many tattoos then. One, they look different after they have healed, and two, this was the first sitting. I have to go back in a month for the touch-up work. It's a lousy picture as well.
Solid-color tattoos are very tricky; especially when they don't have black borders separating the colors.
As for "not very good" tattoos, you should see the couple I gave myself back in high school (with a sewing needle wound with thread and dipped in india ink) and the ones done with a homemade tattoo gun (pen tube, walkman motor, and a sharpened piece of guitar string for the needle) now those are bad. :)

Yep, it's mine. But there's a reason I didn't go to the King5 thing: I know how they would spin someone like me being a brony. As Sethisto said a while back when some news agency was contacting a bunch of bronies for interviews, if you're not an accurate representation of the majority of the fandom or could easily be used to cast the fandom in a negative way, then don't take part in interviews. I am exactly that kind of person, simply by how I appear, so I stay away from them. :D

I am almost twice as old as many of you, run my own business, and the normies think I look like a psycho freak (which I am, but that is beside the point). I also tend to answer questions a little too honestly sometimes.

Ok, if there's defintely something I'm different from everyone else, is how much I don't do anything. Everyone else writes fanfics, makes music, PLUSHIES!!!, but I really gotta start being more productive...

But yeah, you're one of the youngest that goes to the gatherings, but there's some high school colts & fillies in the group as well.
And yes, you should try your hoof at making something. You've definitely got the energy for it, why not use it?

ReplyDeleteAnd energy? What energy? XD I'm just absolutely tired all the time and I can't motivate myself to do anything! I want to draw, write, compose, whatever! But I can't get a project and lift it off ground! They're all just notes and sketches and shit. Most recently I thought about making an animation. How far did I go? It's currently a treatment. And it just stopped there.
It's not like I have any experience animating though, so I was thinking of it more like practicing with Flash.
