I think Trixie ruined her own life. She wasn't willing to accept that Celestia would have more than one personal student. And when she didn't get her way, she made the decision on her own to run away. That's my interpretation, at least.
Trixie should be Twilight's rival.

Actually, Trixie couldn't stay and study under Celestia because rather than hatching the egg, she tried replacing it with a fake hatched egg, but you can't trick the judges with smoke and fake eggs.

This comic makes me think that this Celestia will abandon Twilight if a new, better magician comes into the picture.
Although, Trixie is nowhere near powerful enough to grab the Princess' eye. She'd be an excellent magician, of course, and probably got a nice mentor, but not Celestia.
And I am totally not biased because Twilight is my favourite pony.
Gah. This just annoys me. Yeah, let's all have some artificial sympathy for Trixie. Nothing like this happened, I think. She was always just a fake showpony from the beginning.

My only problem with this is that Trixie doesn't act like she knows Twilight in the episode. Also the implications about Celestia.
I always liked Trixie's character but for different reasons. This just changed everything though. I like her a whole lot more with this piece of depth. I hope we get to see her in the second season sometime.

Well its not as bad as the "A Test of Strength" noir comic where Celestia verifies Twilight's magical talent by sending a spec-ops team to kill her parents.
Poor Trixie, that doesn't seem like the Celestia we know, also I think Trixie's had enough blue-raspberry slushie.
@DoctorWhooves Celestia can share, and Twilight can share, but I don't think Trixie can. Which just makes her sadder.
Meh. I'm generally okay with trying to make the villains sympathetic, but not by making the heroes villainous.

I think trixie is more fun if she doesn't have a reason to be annoying/arrogant. I like to think she's just that kind of pony.

Excuse you? I'll thank you to keep your condescending lectures to yourself. Why should I *not* get annoyed by a cheap and heavy-handed attempt to make a not-so-nice person into the victim of the piece?
This might make me feel bad for Trixie, but honestly I just can't see Celestia acting like this. That rather large bit of out-of-character-ness (it's a word) just prevents me from feeling anything about this. Sure, there's the explanation that Celestia was explaining to Trixie that she'd be willing to take her on, she'd just have to share the spotlight with Twilight, and Trixie wouldn't accept that...but that just makes her seem like an even bigger jerk.
Besides which, I'm in the camp that says sometimes the antagonists are more fun when they're not tragic or sympathetic, they're just plain jerkasses.
The artist said that Celestia wasn't choosing Twilight over Trixie; Rather, she wanted to tutor both personally, at the same time, as equals. Trixie wan't willing to share the spotlight with anypony though, she felt betrayed, so she ran away.
Okay, good. As long as the point wasn't some more of that Trollestia nonsense.
Going by the artist's story, I have no more sympathy than I did starting out (which is exactly none). She's a selfish, stuck-up, arrogant ass. Excuses don't really change that- it's her choice to act like that.
(I really hope she doesn't turn up in season 2. Once was more than enough.)

Wouldn't It Be cool If They Had Trixie back along with Gilda and they would make some sort of Negative 6(as Opposed to the Mane/Main 6)with other antagonist like characters that would probably appear in season 2
