• Hoodie Designs On Ponychan

Over on Ponychan, a brony going by the name of Ari is designing different hoodies for each pony.

I'm kind of curious.  How many of you would be interested in something like this?  The feedback on the ponychan thread is overall very positive.

I guess I could classify this as a discussion post.

Here is a link to the thread on Ponychan

    1. I'd love to get that WITHOUT THE WINGS

The wings kind of make it look retarded. IMO anyway.

      ReplyDelete
    2. I'm a big fan of Avril Lavigne and her hoddies with ears on them, this is very similar and I'd wear it.

      ReplyDelete
    3. I wouldn't wear it

      ReplyDelete
    4. Instead of wings why not put webbing with a feather design between the elbow and side like a flying squirrel suit! In fact make a Rainbow Dash flying squirrel suit.

      ReplyDelete
    5. I WOULD GET A SUMMER JOB JUST TO BUY THESE

      ReplyDelete
    6. I wouldnt wear it either. Dont like the color on my body and I dont wanna walk with ears, wings and hairs on my hoodie.

      ReplyDelete
    7. This is where lines begin to form in this fandom for me. I'm a guy, and though I like the idea of a Sky-blue hoodie w/ possibly Rainbow-Dash's mark on it somewhere...the Ears, the mane and the wings just are a bit too much. Girls can get away with wearing them because on them it's "Cute" lets be honest.
If I were presented a hoodie like this to wear, minus the wings/hair/ears I'd be ok with it.

      ReplyDelete
    8. I'll be wearing the Cutie Mark Crusader patch hoody that I'm ordering... but no, I don't think I'd wear this design.

It's too furry. Yes, Dash is hot... no, I wouldn't want it to be publicly known that I think so. XD

      ReplyDelete
    9. Is it bad if I think it looks like Pinkie Pie used the flayed skins of her friends to make hoodies?

      IDEA: RUINED FOREVER

      u mad

      ReplyDelete
    10. Also, doesn't this kind of give anyone the creeps?

Can't you kind of see the 'Cupcakes' incarnation of Pinkie Pie going around wearing this, made out of the real deal?

      ReplyDelete
    11. On a second thought, not everything that glitters is gold. At first I was blinded by the fact that it's pony hoodies, but if you think about it, it's equivalent to wearing actual pony skin, skinned off, plus too fury, though the hair might be a good idea.

      ReplyDelete
    12. Do want! Somebody make these NOW. I will happily shell out money for one of each of the the mane cast. Except maybe Pinkie. I'm not sure I'd look good in a pink hoodie.

      ReplyDelete
    13. Wings, ears, and mane have to go. That wouldn't even look cute on a fem, in my opinion. Cutie mark is fine, though.

      ReplyDelete
    14. @Anonymous
You just gave me the best idea for haloween costume. Human version of pinkie pie's cupcake costume (but not from actual human skin). shit would be so cash.

      ReplyDelete
    15. I still think a Rainbow Dash squirrel suit would be cool...

      ReplyDelete
    16. worst! design! ever!

      no ears, hairs, or wings.

You can do rainbow stripings down the center of the hood though, that I can accept.

      ReplyDelete
    17. I had the same thoughts as Anon 11.14am

This Hoodie is best suited for female fans of the show, or male fans who are also well within the 'furry' clique.

I'll fly Dash's colours and 'mark any day, but I won't dare be her clone - I think only Scootaloo is that much of a die-hard fan to want to do that

      ReplyDelete
    18. If it didn't have the actual wings on it. Maybe pictures of wings printed on the back would be more appropriate. Same with the ears.

      Then I'd buy it.

      ReplyDelete
    19. Not all furries are into 'suiting (in fact, it's a small but vocal minority), ya know.. but anyways, yeah, this is a bit much. I could only see a little girl getting away with wearing something like this and it not looking.. wrong.

      ReplyDelete
    20. inb4 Fluttershy's "Do you REALLY wanna know...?" rant from Suited For Success

      ReplyDelete
    21. As much as I would actually love to wear something like this, I don't think I could walk 100 metres without being laughed at, or walk a kilometer without getting beaten up in this.

      ReplyDelete
    22. I wouldn't wear it simply because I don't like hoodies.

      ReplyDelete
    23. @Anonymous

And now I'd like to see a Madmax comic that features Scootaloo dressing up in this outfit. XD

      ReplyDelete
    24. The wings make it look a bit too much like a fursuit.
      Still, OHMYGOSHOHMYGOSHOHMYGOSH!

      ReplyDelete
    25. @AnonymousIf it's any consolation I'd secretly laud your bravery while I beat you for wearing this.

      ReplyDelete
    26. i'd buy it. and wear it. ALL THE TIME

      ReplyDelete
    27. i like it as it is
      also without the wings
      maybe without the ears
i don't like it if it doesn't have the mane

      ReplyDelete
    28. The design looks awesome! i don't think i could ever wear something like it though, except for at comic cons or parties, as it would otherwise look silly on me

My first thought upon seeing this? Almighty God, how much is this going to cost? Seriously, in order to get any kind of longevity out of the item the final product would have to use a lot of hideously expensive (and durable) materials. The cost to benefit differential would be enormous.

Plus, it's like undead431 said, it looks like someone skinned Rainbow Dash and is now trying to sell her pelt online. I can get behind a sky blue hoodie with RD's cutie mark on it, I could even stand a rainbow dye job on part of the hood, but I will not willingly choose to wear a piece of clothing that has pieces of one of my favorite character's body sewn onto it. That's just not cool.

. . . Though, this entire line of thought has brought about an interesting concept for the Ponyhammer 40,000 project. So I suppose that's something.

      ReplyDelete
    30. Well, if I lost a bet...

      ReplyDelete
    31. No wings, no ears.

      Then I'll think about it.

      ReplyDelete
    32. Maybe. They'd have to lose the wings and mane. I'd be cool with ears + cutie marks, though.

If these actually get made I'll totally buy a Rarity one.

      ReplyDelete
    33. I still want the Wonderbolts hoodies as pictured here...

      ReplyDelete
    34. I can't even tell my best friend im a brony, let alone wear a winged hoodie.

It's so cold and lonely here in the brony closet.

      ReplyDelete
    35. I don't mind the ears really. The wings are overboard though

      ReplyDelete
    36. Nope, not for me.

      ReplyDelete
    37. The wings really up the creepy factor, I think.

All the attention Pinkie gave Rainbow's wings in 'Cupcakes' comes back to my mind when I look at the wings on this hoody, and it kind of makes me gag since I love Rainbow so much.

      ReplyDelete
    38. One of us! One of us!

If it makes you feel any better, I *am* a furry, and I wouldn't wear something like that in public.

Heck I don't even know if I'd wear it at a con. Despite my love of ponies and furry things, I have to have *some* standards or I'm in danger of losing my Guy License. :)

      ReplyDelete
    39. Make a kigurumi (a costume pajamas) instead. You can then wear it around the house and to bed without fear of embarrassment.

      ReplyDelete
    40. Okay, Sethisto, I have a serious request:
Can you please just...stop with this whole anti-furry thing?
Us ponies are supposed to be an accepting community, and you're working against that.
Or can you at least keep the negativity to yourself, and out of your posts?
      That'd be nice.

In accordance to the hoodie however, I think it looks great!
However the ears do look like a little much, and they're not necessarily key to Rainbow Dash's look, as they're ALL ponies.
The mane and the wings alone would be fine.

      ReplyDelete
    41. As much as I love rainbow dash, I don't think I could wear this. I'm more into the pony-"inspired" look.

      ReplyDelete
    42. The design is way too cluttered. Could you imagine trying to follow this style of design for a Pinkie Pie hoodie? Or Rarity? It'd be a mess.

I could get behind the ears -or- the hair, but not both, and certainly not with the wings. Imagine trying to put this thing through the washing machine or dry cleaners? It'd fall to pieces in short order.

I think it would do much better if the hair and wings were reduced to print-designs instead. Wings printed down the back, rainbow printed on the top of the hood between the ears. Even that's being generous since I'd personally reduce it all down to just a sky-blue hoodie with Rainbow Dash's cutie mark printed on the shoulders.

      ReplyDelete
    43. I wouldn't wear it. It screams furry.

I think the ears are okay on girls, but the wings and hair is a huge stretch.

If it was just a light blue hoodie with Dash's cutie mark on it, I'd wear it, but not in its current state. It's just ridiculous. I'm all about brony pride, but there's a fine line between looking like a brony and looking like a weirdo in public. And I believe this is going over the line.

This isn't Nam. There are rules.

      ReplyDelete
    44. I've had that idea for a wile but way to make it a reality, I would buy one in a heart beat

      ReplyDelete
    45. I'm all for weird hoodies (I want to make one with a face on each side of the hood) but... this is a tad bit ridiculous.

Personally I would have nothing on the hood, then I would put the cutie mark over the right (or left) part of the chest (like a badge, but bigger) and write "Rainbow Dash" on one of the arms, and maybe print wings on the back. (like the simplified design has)

      ReplyDelete
    46. I'm a die-hard furry, and I wouldn't ever wear that.

It looks more "neko" - whatever that is, I honestly don't know - than "furry" anyway. The ears, that is. I'm sure a lot of people would like that part in particular though.

You know, personal taste? Not judging things just by stereotypes? Friendship and all that junk?

As a designer, I'd say all a pony costume needs are appropriate colours and maybe a pony image: Twilight's hoodie would be dark-purple with a single magenta line running across the left or right side. Classy.

Rainbow's can be light-blue with two mirror-image rainbows circling the sides like open wings. I'd wear that... If I were brave enough.

      ReplyDelete
    47. Uh, I'll take a version with, like, a Wing pattern picture on the back, no ears, and no mane, just maybe a colored stripe.

Yeah, I want a blue hoodie with a cutie mark. That's it.

Non of the furry fru fru.

      ReplyDelete
    48. yeah no. this is pretty furry. not for me i guess. But hey, make it anyway im sure it would make some people happy :)

      ReplyDelete

I dislike furries. Fapping to animals? Really?

    52. @Colyme
Sure. I guess i was a bit harsh on it looking back. I honestly don't mind furry.

      ReplyDelete
    53. @Anonymous HAHA! Don't worry brony, one day it will be forbidden by law to like cartoon animals... Oh wait...

@BronyVids That's a lot better, imho. Not my style, but I can see the appeal.

Especially with the bright colours: these seem to have completely disappeared from modern clothing somehow, at least where I live.

Christ, it can't be hard to come up with a t-shirt design for this stuff.

      ReplyDelete
    54. I never leave the house without my jacket (even though it's Florida).
It's an old Soviet military jacket.
People don't recognize me without it.
This would be a bad decision for me.

    55. @Sethisto
      Thank you kindly.
However, looking at the comments on this post, I suppose you're not really the only one to blame here.

I think I'm simply going to stop reading the comments for posts like this entirely; they disgust me.

      ReplyDelete
    56. I'm a bit of a furry myself, but when the thought of the hoodie looking like someone skinned Rainbow Dash, I got turned off by it. Maybe if it was less like that, I might think about it.

Although, I would totally wear the Wonderbolt hoodie Purple Tinker brought up. That would be awesome!

      ReplyDelete
    57. This is getting pretty borderline furry.

And before someone goes off on some accepting everyone friendship speech thing, I don't mind furries.

You just haven't exactly made yourselves a group that someone would want to be associated with.

Keep it clean, Keep it classy, and for the love of god don't make the bronies look like furries.

      ~Scratch

      ReplyDelete
    58. @Sethisto For the sake of confusion: as this "furry" thing - I guess? - I don't mind at all. "Furry" is adjective enough. Descriptive.

The worst I'd worry about is sheer irony: bringing up fans of cartoon animals on a site for fans of cartoon animals.

      (It's pretty funny though)

@Colyme You just have to care about what other people a bit less. It's hard - for us humans - but it's a skill you'll have to learn as fan of a cartoon for little girls. ;)

This design is the best so far. I'd wear it.

      ReplyDelete
    60. @BronyVids

This. These hoodies have a far more solid design. This is the sort of thing one should aim for when making themed clothing; it references the source material while still being moderately subtle. Well... as subtle as a rainbow can be.

      ReplyDelete
    61. I'd wear this one

    62. @Fire.Esper
The point here is that "furries" feel some sexual attraction for those cartoon animals.
And I think that is a little weird. Even if those are only cartoon

      ReplyDelete
    63. maybe without the wings, otherwise i suddenly lost the ability to keep my money

      ReplyDelete
    64. Nope.jpg

Furfags are ruining ponies. I am very much beginning to dislike this fandom and it's getting worse every day.

      ReplyDelete
    65. I wouldn't wear this, but I don't mind it.

      ReplyDelete
    66. @BronyVids THIS!

That's what I'm talking about. It's actually, well, clothing, design in clothing... Like... Fashion. Good find!

Still, this hoodie also gets a lot of positive feedback. Different strokes for different folks, huh.

@Anonymous Good luck with your social acceptance thing. Call up them furries when you eventually fail miserably like every other emerging social group in history.

"Rock n' roll is music of the Satan, you darn kids!"

      Give it time.

@Anonymous You mean exactly like people do in every other fandom ever? Yeah, that happens. It's pretty weird alright.

      PinkieDash forever, btw.

      ReplyDelete
    67. I'm fine with furries. But every now and again, there's a time where either the group as a whole or certain individuals of the group make me dislike them.

Like those who over-sexualize them. I'm fine with seeing a little hotness from time to time, but since I've only ever seen sexual stuff from the furry community (literally NOTHING lower than rated X content), It just feels like it's a little too much, you know?

Of course... there's one thing from the furry community that I will never like... something that fills me with utter disgust and blind, seething hatred...

FURSUITS. GIVEN THE CHANCE, I WOULDN'T MIND IMPALING THE FREAKS WHO WEAR THOSE THINGS ON FLAMING PIKES AND AMPUTATING THEM, BEFORE THROWING WHATS LEFT OF THEM INTO A VAT OF CONCENTRATED ACID AND POURING THE ACID OVER THE REST OF THEIR DAMNED COSTUMES!!

      "/endpsychosis"

      ReplyDelete
    69. Yeah, the simplified design of the Rainbow Dash hoodie looks better, the wings would be overkill. I would prefer the Derpy Hooves hoodie, it would only be recognisable as a MLP:FIM hoodie to other bronies and other people probably wouldn't see anything strange with it.

      As for the furry thing:
Furry has nothing to do with sexual attraction to anything. It also has nothing to do with fursuits. With that in mind, the discussion so far seems a bit weird to me... (not considering myself a furry, but this is probably irrelevant)

      ReplyDelete
    70. Loose the ears, the wings and instead of a rainbow mane add rainbow coloured "fluff" or whatever you call it, around the edge of the hood.

      ATM too furry, wouldn't buy.

      ReplyDelete
    71. Are some people so paranoid of furries that they wouldn't wear something like this? Why is that?

Does it have something to do with fursuiters?
Or maybe something to do with the online communities?
Are people afraid they might be associated with all of this?

Sounds like petty paranoia to me.

    74. Get rid of the mane and wings and you have a sale.

      ReplyDelete
    75. @Anonymous

I'm a little hurt that you actually believe that.

      ReplyDelete
    76. @Fleymevas

It's just paranoia from ignorant people who have the wrong idea about furries.

      As a general rule:

      - We don't want to fuck animals.
      - We don't fap to animals.

Yes, many of us like porn, but really... many of *everyone* likes porn. And I've seen some weird ass porn coming from the anime community that makes the most exotic furry porn look tame in comparison.

Yes, many of us like to dress up in costumes. So what?

Yes, many of us are immature and socially stunted.... But this is the case in pretty much ALL fandoms.

      So get over yourselves.

(and yes, I've probably been trolled. Just tired of this bullshit)

      ReplyDelete
    77. @Colyme
Hey, Colyme, I have a serious request:

    82. @Sethisto Good move. This is just ridiculous (and somewhat sickening, actually).

      Ahem.

My vote for wingless-maneless-earless design. Clothing that looks like clothing rather than a costume.

Also, more rainbows. Dash needs lots of rainbows.

      ReplyDelete
    83. @Sethisto
Seth you're such a whore. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into this.

      ReplyDelete
    84. I don't get why people are throwing around such derogatory names as "furfags", etc.

I have nothing against furries, personally. I don't think I qualify as one, because I only find some cartoon characters mildly cute rather than super-hot; but still I don't really care what other people find attractive as long as it doesn't hurt anyone.

And it's certainly none of my business. You guys throwing around all these hateful terms should really tone it down.

      ReplyDelete
    85. On topic, folks. We're discussing fashion here. Rarity would be aghast at all this trifling.

      @Fire.Esper
I respectfully disagree on the idea of more rainbows. A little rainbow goes a long way, but a lot of rainbow hurts to look at. Better to go with something small and tasteful.

      ReplyDelete
    86. To me, this hoodie can be described in two words:

      Too much.

I mean I like ponies A LOT but this... is borderline rediculous. Just my opinion.

      ReplyDelete
    87. @Kurogo It's true: it's why Rainbow's only actually rainbow part is the mane.

It needs to be balanced out, but at the same time it can't be relegated to small stripes or cutie marks; it needs to be strongly present to actually be Rainbow Dash, yet without taking over the whole picture, and it needs to be balanced against the whole body rather than just the hoodie.

Ah, the wonderful world of design. Don't know a damn about clothes though.

      ReplyDelete
    88. Remove the wings and ears. Other than that, fund it.

      ReplyDelete
    89. Hey!

Ohmygosh I totally didnt expect this to be posted here :D! Thanks!
Just a quick reply before work, yeah guilty of this being kinda furry xD was aiming for something cute more than anything though (Though, GG with the cupcakes references guys :P) but I've also done a simplistic version mockup of the dash hoodie in the thread :D screenprinted/iron on transfer wings would be optional on that design too :3

Thanks for all the crits and input!

      ReplyDelete
    91. I probably wouldn't wear something like this. I'm more into simple designs and the mane seems like a bit much.

However, I saw an idea for a Wonderbolts hoodie that I would be more inclined to wear.

      ReplyDelete
    92. Funny, everyone seems to hate the idea of the wings but the hair and ears seem a bit more accepted, I would contemplate getting one of these with wings only, no hood

      ReplyDelete
    93. @Fast and Free
There are already plenty of hoodies that have ears, and I've seen a few that have plush mohawks as well. The wings, however, don't mesh and, combined with everything else, seem a bit over the top. In the illustrated form they'd be too flimsy, would likely tear right off, would get in the way (flopping around when moving, making backpacks impossible, etc) and would generally just be a bother. Plus, y'know, you've got plushie wings hanging from your back...

      @arinaca
Good job on a first draft. Designing clothes isn't even remotely easy, though it's nice to see your effort and that you take constructive criticism well. Let's see a few more swings at the idea, yeah?

      ReplyDelete
    100. Ah well, it looks cute on paper. And an art of a human-style RD wearin' this would work out great, wouldn't it? I'm glad the designer checked in and mentioned screenprinting too.

      (browses all comments) ... I AIN'T EVEN MAD. :D

      ReplyDelete
    101. I would not buy or wear that RD hoodie, not even for Halloween. I don't want _be_ Rainbow Dash, I like the artwork that is Rainbow Dash. Rainbow Dash clothing should reflect that esthetic.

      ReplyDelete
    102. Ha ha ha! Oh wow.

I'm sorry, but wings, ears, and a rainbow mohawk? What the hell. Saying that this sweatshirt is gaudy would be a horrible understatement. People are not ponies. Putting little wings and crap on us just makes us look silly.

      ReplyDelete
    103. I don't remember people being so whiny about furries back when swatkats and the thundercats were popular, then again this is the internet and everyone knows that the minority thats the most vocal is representative of the entire fandom!

      Very tolerant of you Ponies.

In regards to the Hoodie though...Lose the wings, and maybe the ears. the Mowhawk is just too cool to remove though.

    104. I'd not only wear this, but I'd wear the hood up, and I never put the hood up.

If it wasn't for ponies being quadrapeds, I'd say to put silk-screen wings on the arms.

    105. 180 pound hetero male Bronie here.

      Yes I'd wear it.

Still, I think the design with the big cutie mark in the back looks cleaner.

    106. Why don't we just take this furry flamewar...

      and PUSH it somewhere else?!

    107. @ Anonymouse who said it looked gaudy

THANK YOU! From a designer's standpoint this hoodie is a trainwreck. Far too cluttered and overly flashy.

Needs to be streamlined, simplified. Then we're in business.

    108. I would prefer the wings to be just a design on the back, but I'd wear it with a mane and ears.

I'd like it more it was a pullover myself though, rather than having a zipper.

      But I'd still wear it.

    109. my first thought was like many's on here (it looks furry). i admit that. but at the same time, from a style point of view, it's simply too much. personally i've never been one for hoodies with excess stuff on them, so even it there was just the ears i'd still be a little edgy just because i feel it looks tacky. the wings are definitely a no, and to think of anything with some sort of mane or hair emulation just makes me shudder. if i could offer a design change, i'd just say stitch an outline of rd's wings on the back, not make them physical protrusions.
tl;dr: impractical design that would have much more potential if simplified.

    110. DO WANT PINKIE PIE HOODIE!!!

    111. Take off the stuffed wings, mane and ears. Maybe have the mane coloured on the hoodie (inside or outside) maybe? Just my suggestion. Wish the designs could be a bit more fashionable and wearable outdoors.

    112. I myself wouldn't wear it, but the idea is great

    113. Thanks again for all the input, already looking at revising the designs and the simplified version looks like it might actually happen :O! I'll keep updating the thread on Ponychan for anyone interested :3

      Thanks again all <3!

    114. Having wings and hair sticking out might turn a few heads in public for the wrong reasons...not really my kind of thing. Perhaps if they were just shirt designs?

    115. In a strange sort of way I think the wings are cool. I wouldn't wear it myself though. The mane and ears are definitely over the top as well.

I think the design would be a lot more accessible if the mane/ears were removed and if the wings were printed on the back as an image. I'm no designer, but that seems closer to something I'd consider wearing . . .

    116. eh. I don't care for it. If I couldn't wear it and not feel self-conscious outside of a geek- or fandom-oriented setting, then I wouldn't buy it.

      ReplyDelete
    117. i would buy it and pretend to be an airplane like i usually do and run to everywhere(except i will actually be rainbow dash). even better i wont need to stick out my arms to pretend they are wings anymore, cuz i will already have wings!!!!!!!

And the female fandom rejoiced! Love it just as it is, but different levels of detail I think would all be very marketable. I needs a Fluttershy!

    120. i already made my own rainbow dash hoodie lol

    121. i meant to make a comment on this earlier.
so here's what you do to satisfy everybody.
remove the peripheral stuff (ears and wings and mane) so that it is just a hoodies that is rainbowdash's bodie's shade of blue. then, on the back, have a huge print of her cutie mark.
      that way the hoodie:

      1. looks cool and not at all gaudy

      2. it will have the whole appeal of being a sort of "hey, if your a brony then you totally get what this thing i'm wearing is" thing

      3. and, like many people said during project merch, if you are a little self conscious about wearing something that make you look like a huge MLP fan, then people who look at the design i just suggested will simply think your wearing some sort of a trendy hoody.

      that way everyone is happy.

    122. While I would love to have one, due to the large number of parasprites I deal with on a day-to-day basis, I would imagine the wings, ears, and mane to be ripped off by the people who aren't manly enough to watch the show themselves. If they were removable, that would be a whole other story.

      ReplyDelete
    123. I second this motion. I REALLY LOVE this hoodie idea.

      ReplyDelete
    124. I LOVE THIS. I would soooooooooooooooooo buy this!

    125. I think to many people think they would look "stupid" in this. Saying that they should get rid of the ears, wings, and fur pretty much means destroying the whole concept. ANYONE can iron on a cutie mark on a blue hoodie. :\ Personally I think this is AMAZING! The wings might be a bit over the top, or simply to difficult to make, though I think it makes it even more cute! If its not possible, at least make a print of the wings on the back.
I would love to get one of these!!!

      ReplyDelete
    126. I'd tootally buy it
      Minus the wings
The wings should be printed on the back
      Rainbow Dash iz da bestest
