• Popular Posts: Remove or Keep? And Other News

You may have seen that huge pile of words and images on the left hand side bar labeled "popular posts".  It's something blogger has built in that takes the top 10 most viewed posts in the last 7 days and features them in order.

I added it mainly to test it, but it pretty much just chooses episode posts/drawfriend stuff! Go figure! Do any of you actually use it?

Also in other news, upcoming Drawfriend Posts are getting a bit of a facelift. All of the stuff currently queued (9 images right now) has a source attached.  Hopefully this will allow me to post a DA page or something for everything.

I only hit /co/ once or twice a day now briefly (I think they hate me now anyway for some reason) so most of the drawfriend stuff will be from my normal, every-4-hour dig on DA/Penny Arcade/Allspark/Ponibooru/Ponychan/Fimchan/mlparena/furryaffinitywithsafesearchonohgod. I think that about covers most of pony image content out there.

Anyway off to bed! I have some stuff set to start posting in a few hours. Hopefully nothing breaks!

    1. I can't see the harm in keeping it.

    3. I don't use it. It annoys me and it's cluttered.

    4. Popular post have been somewhat useful, if spotty in functional design.

    5. >furry website
      OH GOD WHY

      ReplyDelete
    6. A new user to the site might find it useful. I don't think it's cluttered and important posts can instantly be found, so yeah, I use it from time to time.

      ReplyDelete
    7. I just used it to find the latest episode - it was removed from the heading and hasn't been added to the Youtube Streams dropdown.

      ReplyDelete
    8. You should keep it only because it makes the text on the right side and left side of the screen more balanced.

Aside from that, I don't really find it functional.

      ReplyDelete
    9. Despite the fact that I'm really detestable why do I continue to frequent this place of sunshine and happiness?

Anyway yes it could be useful, but it isn't as far as I see it. Anything new can be found on the right hand side. Also what happened to weekly-wrap up?

    10. Just a thought, but perhaps the popular posts mostly include drawfriend stuff because most other posts don't require you to actually "read more" to get the content you want to read. So it doesn't register as being viewed individually. :/

      Otherwise, I don't think its a problem.

    11. I don't use them at all, seeing as I keep up with the blog, but they don't bother me.

    13. You hit up places like penny arcade and furaffinty for pony pics but not /b/?
Then again I guess we don't have much non-macro OC...

      ReplyDelete
    14. @Kein

They have pony threads on their forums.

      ReplyDelete
    15. It dont hurt anyone.

      ReplyDelete
    16. Hum, I guess that explains why the stuff I draw on /co/ stopped appearing here.

    17. I don't use it but now I looked at it and noticed I missed
      http://www.equestriadaily.com/2011/04/fim-director-asks-weird-al-for-guest.html
      this post.

I dunno, it seems pretty harmless? My opinion: don't change it unless you have better idea how to use this space.

    18. As it is, the popular posts provide no interesting information while using up bandwidth. The sidebars do a much better job of giving an overview of the articles and are more useful for newcomers. So I think the popular posts should be removed.

Keep up the good work on this blog.

      ReplyDelete
    19. /co/ hates you blogpony? You must be doing something right then!

Thanks again for all your hard work - also, lose the popular posts.

      ReplyDelete
    20. I did use the popular posts bar a few times, but i'm not really sure if it's all that usefull, seeing as all the newest links are on the right side aswell

      ReplyDelete
    21. Remove.

Highlighting already popular things is positive feedback, it results in stagnation - that's why DeviantArt features only upstarts or not too popular artists on the frontpage, for example.

Maybe you could do the same, by the way? Have your proofreaders - or yourself - put up a "Featured" fanfic or video once in a while.

      ReplyDelete
    22. Oh and, if /co/ hates you, you're definitely on the right track.

      We love you, Sethi. <3

    23. I've never touched that Popular Post this. I visit too often to miss anything. Whether or not you keep it is up to you. I don't mind either way.

    25. On a side note: Whats that i hear of a pony social hiarchy? I dont like the sound of that. Its.... Misguided.

      ReplyDelete
    26. I personally appreciate the popular posts sidebar, and it makes sense that drawfriends are popular, yet that doesnt make the bar useless.

However, I havent actually ever touched the thing, or clicked on any link....

      ReplyDelete
    27. I use it very often... so I vote for "keep it" :)

      ReplyDelete
    28. Well, you could use the space for story related uses, such as having the highest rated stuff on there. Or stuff that needs proofread. Something to do with fanfics, anyway.

      ReplyDelete
    29. What makes you think /co/ hates you, I don't get it?

    31. Seeing as all the popular posts have already been viewed by me, and probably always will, it's not really that useful to me personally, but someone who visits the site once a day or every few days will more than likely find it more useful than simply crawling through the backlog of updates.

      ReplyDelete
    32. To be honest, I don't think I've ever used the "popular posts" section. Oh well.

      ReplyDelete
    33. Bulleted responses! ORGANIZATION!

      * I find the popular threads bar interesting, but not really useful. The top link is always the latest episode, which is easy to find since you've usually got a link at the top anyway. And once the season ends it'll just be all drawfriend stuff. Get rid of it.

      * 4chan does not hate you. Well, no more than they hate everything else. There seems to be a small group of bronies who love to complain about the blog and whine about whole gay controversy (which was what, two months ago? Geez) but someone usually springs up to defend you, too. Pony threads seem to indicate that most bronies on /co/ read ED and like it.

      * I'm glad drawfriend posts are getting sources added. My response whenever I see a good pic is usually "I wish I could see more of this person's work!"

      * Unrelated but: you should bring back author tags. Maybe only use them for people who have submitted three or more stories or something. But they make it easier to keep up with favorite writers.

      ReplyDelete
    34. Instead of Popular posts, why not replace the side with stories that are in the "Stars/Votes Needed" category?

      ReplyDelete
    35. It's pretty useless...

      ReplyDelete
    36. I don't use the left side bar. I do use the right hand links that are sorted by type, though they don't seem to always be updated correctly. So I vote no on the popular content sidebar.

By the way, one problem with the left side bars is that updated posts don't bump on it, apparently, so if I was trying to use it to find the latest chapter of a nine part epic, it won't be there, and that's a little annoying.

      ReplyDelete
    37. Safesearch on? -2 epic points. (Out of about three-hundred something, so no big deal.)

Seriously though, I pretty much didn't realize there was a Popular Posts thing. If it's possible, I'd like to see Zarkanorf's suggestion for a "Stars/Votes Needed" section.

      ReplyDelete
    38. /co/ is where it all started mang. I'm dissapoint in you blog brony. You are abandoning the true/original bronies for these new guys who don't even know what it means to be oatmeal. If its any consolation, I still like you, and I'm on /co/ more than any other pony board.

      ReplyDelete
    39. @Anonymous
but at the same time /co/ is full of newfriends that dont know anything and try and start topics that were made back in December witch only annoys the oldfriends so then they start fighting
plus the trolls and other bitching from guys that just like it because its teh kewl new memelolololol
just make the /co/threads unpleasant -same with /b/ but over9000 times worse
other sites are just better at this point imo and alot of the members there are actually oldfriends from 4chan anyways

tl:dr 4chan sucks same as ever

      ReplyDelete
    40. I didn't even notice it was there until this post mentioned it.

      ReplyDelete
    41. I use it primarily as a shortcut to the story archive. Some of the other posts that pop up offer for a good read since I can't get to this site daily to check stuff out.

I see no harm in having it left there.

      ReplyDelete
    42. why are people saying "if /co/ hates yoy you must be doing something right?" please dont write dumb things on the blog, thanks

also, the popular posts is really only useful in that it's kind of like a mini bookmark page for the drawfriend posts. it's basically worthless on a blog like this though

      ReplyDelete
    43. @Fire.Esper

Tell him to get fresh air while you posted three times in here already...

    44. > I think that about covers most of pony image content out there

Hey, lulz totally has original pony content.

uh... rarely. But you should visit lulz again anyway!

      ReplyDelete
    45. I use it all the time. usually it is useless to have some posts that i read a lot but what else would you put there?

      ReplyDelete
    46. keep it. navigability is a good thing.

      ReplyDelete
    47. So.. It's about 50/50 right now.

      I'm lost

I like the idea of an update archive though, and

      ReplyDelete
    48. I like the pop posts sidebar, it reminds me where to look for discussion in the comments. I also like it as an indicator as to what interests the brony community.

      ReplyDelete
    49. I would definitely keep it, or modify it as you see fit. Right now it seems a little bulky in the vertical direction, maybe only use the headlines and not the subtext.

      ReplyDelete
    50. There are ponies on /b/ too, and we're actually a lot friendlier than the /co/ bunch.

      ReplyDelete
    51. /co/ doesn't hate you, a half-dozen trolls hate you. Par for the 4chan course, I believe.

Also, I personally have never used the favorites, but they aren't in my way when I'm navigating the site or anything, so I guess I don't really care. I'd get rid of them if it were up to me, but having them around isn't negatively impacting my EqD experience.

      ReplyDelete
    52. Some posts, like the story archive, are more essential than they are popular.

Though some thinkering must be done, keep it.

      ReplyDelete

      >/co/ doesn't hate you, a half-dozen trolls hate you.

      THIS

a couple of people != everyone on /co/ pony threads

      they're just the vocal ones

    54. I'd say keep it. As annoying as it is life sometimes keeps me too busy to check the site for a day or two at times. When that happens the popular posts turn out to be a great way to see the highlights of what I've missed.

      ReplyDelete
    55. keep! I'm a newcomer, so keep!
