3. I always have to wait for the youtube videos.

4. This seems like it's going to be a Spike episode more than anything, which I'm totally stoked for. Maybe Twilight will learn to stop being so ungrateful to him?

Silly Anon, that is practicaly...|
A crime. Celestia will banish you and than lock you in a dungeon in the place She banished you to.

6. >Spike is jealous when Twilight becomes friends with an owl

Therefore, he started the "Manly Men Club" with Snips and Snails as a retort jealous-ifier. Or something.

ReplyDelete
7. Argh! I want to watch it so bad, but I'm afraid someone will see me. I must wait until everyone will be asleep.

ReplyDelete
8. My class got cancelled so I may be able to watch this one!

Lets just hope there's a decent stream going.

ReplyDelete
9. First time a three-day weekend made me skip friday.
And I knew what day it was just five minutes ago.

ReplyDelete
10. I think it's going to be Twilight AND Spike centered, with Spike going out of his way to try and get Twilights attentions again.

ReplyDelete
11. i think that spike will get jealous and then will try to make twi jealous i can't wait

ReplyDelete
12. Any other streams? Anything just not justin.tv

Justin.tv are evil. "Max views for your country, please give us money"

19. Come on Everfree owl from Staremaster.

14:48 the owl! It was there! With an evil glare!

ReplyDelete
23. I am guessing that there will be a subtle shout-out to the Owl Archemedes from Disney's the Sword in the Stone.

ReplyDelete
24. Spike can set things in his hands on fire, eventually comfirmed for fireball throwing ability.

Pinkie eats veg mexican foods to stay thin.

ReplyDelete
25. lols at evil spike XD

ReplyDelete
26. And once Spike is done framing the owl for murdering a mouse, he'll be off to capture that blasted Penelope Pitstop!

ReplyDelete
27. LOL!
What a good plan from Spike... lol

ReplyDelete
28. Great little details so far!
Dastardly Spike is soo awesome!
The punch is now... Spiked! Lol, reference to drugs in kid show xD

ReplyDelete
29. Spike is about to run away from home due in part to idiocy all his own. He should be happy to have more free time to himself, he's always complaining that he's forced to do a lot, then he turns into an Snidely Whiplash because he feels threatened.

30. Owl can Own a Dragon - Confirmed.

ReplyDelete
31. Off work, woohoo! For once I get to watch it (almost) live.

Hah, they actually made the "Spiked punch" reference. :D

ReplyDelete
32. Oh, great the everfree owl is now Twilights pet. Not the greatest episode in the world, moderate at best.

ReplyDelete
33. Adult dragons confirmed for being the most useless things ever, considering they can be bested by ponies and owls a hundredth of their size.

Also, that owl confirmed for fourth-wall breaking apprentice of Pinkie.

ReplyDelete
34. Owls are OP. They can beat dragons with minimal effort, see in the dark, AND break the fourth wall.

Fuckin' trowls.

ReplyDelete
35. That owl.....

*Man tears of fear*

ReplyDelete
36. Spike episode -> Good
Mary Sue Owl -> Bad

overall- OK, trying not to feel disappoint after so many Celestia-tier episodes recently.

ReplyDelete
37. well, That happened. Probably the most boring episode of this season (for me of course)
It still has some hilarious moments like Mustached villain Spike and badass dragon, but... I give 3 of 5 oatmeal cups to this episode.

ReplyDelete
38. Spike episodes. There should be more of them.

ReplyDelete
39. someone get on OwliciousxPhilomena shipping!

ReplyDelete
40. It's the age old idiom of Brawn Vs. Brains in the dragons case of why it was losing.

Was the owl in any other episode other then Staremaster and this one?

ReplyDelete
41. Ended up missing most of the episode due to an argument, dangit...

Wait, they "Spiked" the punch?

Dangit, now I need a new idea for the Summer Celebration art contest...I came up with that idea literally two days ago!

ReplyDelete
42. Lots of good stuff in this one!

Scootaloo confirmed for Rainbow Dash hero worship
"Spiked Punch"
Dastardly Spike
And a pretty cool action sequence at the end

I liked this one a lot!

ReplyDelete
43. Evil Spike was awesome!

ReplyDelete
44. SPOILER

Wow... I would have bet that he was gonna wake up from a dream in the end.. specially when he has on the dastardly villain costume.
also: OWLS EAT MICE.

ReplyDelete
45. Aw come on guys! I thought this was a pretty good episode, I dunno why everyone else is 'meh' about it. :(

ReplyDelete
46. @Anonymous
Nice to know I wasn't the only one calling dream sequence at the end.

ReplyDelete
47. @Display NameHe popped the popcorn in "Over a Barrel," remember?

ReplyDelete
48. I like these plots. The "New guy is totally helpful he must have evil alterior motives/secretly be a jerk no wait he's actually really a super cool guy" plot.

Spikes relationship with Twilight is kinda complicated. He'd sorta similtaneously her best friend, little brother and assitant at the same time. Also, keeping in mind how they met Twilight's kinda the closest thing he has to a mom.

ReplyDelete
49. goddamn... whootabuse is now called for. make it happen somepony!

ReplyDelete
50. This was Spikes twenty minutes of fame and then we'll be back to do more things with ponies.

ReplyDelete
51. this far we have pets for

aj-winona
pinkie- gummy the alligator
rarity- the cat i forgot the name
twi-that owl......who?
fluttershy- well basically all the animals in her cottage

we need a pet for dash now¡¡¡¡

ReplyDelete
52. Spike episode. Lotsa fun. A little bit of Awkward, but not nearly as much as
Not much more substance than Over a Barrel though, so it'll probably be the most entertaining the first time watched.

That said, I do intend to re-watch it at least 3-4 more times before the next new episode shows.

ReplyDelete
53. A good little episode, but nothing spectacular. Nothing egregiously bad with it, either. Some good little bits: Scootaloos Dash worshiping, Spiked Punch, Villain Spike and his Dastardly Plan. Nice to see Spike get some development as well, considering his frankly bizarre boss/big sister/friend/mom relationship with Twilight.

Honestly, I think it's more hurt by the placement of the episode in the season, as it comes after Bird in the Hoof and the Cutie Mark Chronicles, both of which were spectacular, top tier episodes. Hell, apart from maybe Over a Barrel, it could be argued that the last five episodes have been incredibly strong.

It'll probably be viewed better in hindsight, standing by itself. It lands about mid-tier for me, but that's not an insult to the episode. Would have liked to see Twilight play more of an active role in evading the dragon, though.

ReplyDelete
54. @Anonymous:

Yeah, but that was popcorn, and technically it didn't burn, it just popped.

Usually when he breathes on paper and such it gets teleported to Celestia.

ReplyDelete
55. @kwj
And Scoot for Dash, obviously.

ReplyDelete
56. This is the first non-CMC episode in which the CMC appeared.

ReplyDelete
57. Spike and Twilight are my least favorite characters so this was "eh" episode for me. I guess it was nice for Spike to get his own centered episode though, I think this one was more about him that Twilight. But Scootaloo's Dash worship is adorable. :3 And Spike's sadness made me awwww at the screen a few times.

Probably won't be watching this episode more than once, though. But I laughed at the "SPIKED THE PUNCH" part. And the dead mouse with ketchup blood!

ReplyDelete
58. If Twilight lit her horn with the dragon chasing her she would have been caught for sure.

ReplyDelete
59. I'd like some more Spike episodes for season 2, but with 100% less owl.

ReplyDelete
60. I still like to think that the Astronomy book was teleported to Celestia, surprising her in a flurry of pages and star charts

ReplyDelete
61. Not a bad episode but its hard to beat last week's epic tale. I liked the spike-centric story and I really enjoyed the subtle pinkie-ness that filled the episode.

ReplyDelete
62. When doeS it stream on youtube

ReplyDelete
63. Am I the only one who was secretly hoping for a Zecora appearance during the Everfree Forest sequence?

(On a slightly random note, I once named a snowman Aloysius, and my brain broke when my mom taught me how that was spelled. But I guess it'll finally come in handy if I ever end up writing fic involving Owloysius.)

ReplyDelete
64. But the store is called "Quills and Sofas!"
I loled!

ReplyDelete
65. Not a bad episode. Watching Spike run around in a top hat, cape, and mustache is a definite plus.

ReplyDelete
66. @Display Name
Well yeah -- he burned up Dash's popcorn in Barrel. Presumably it's the scrolls that are enchanted to teleport when burned.

@Boxesofboxes
Seconded!

Spikeley Whiplash FTW. What is it with Spike and mustaches?

I'll be interested to see if Owloicious continues to show up, or if he'll fade out like Gummy did.

ReplyDelete
67. Still waiting for youtube

ReplyDelete
68. Owluicious?

69. I am waiting for download, or HD somewhere if it is up by the time my friend gets here.

ReplyDelete
70. @Anonymous They were hiding under a table in the first episode.

ReplyDelete
71. CMC appeared in the first episode, just not as the CMC.

I'm keeping track of how long until HD uploads on Youtube.

This
The owl doesn't seem like it's compatible with the cast's chemistry as a permanent addition.

ReplyDelete
81. Not really my favorite episode, in fact probably my least favorite. Not to say it was bad, just the others are better. Even Show Stoppers.

Scootaloot/Dash interaction was the high point.Twilight had some good moments. I like Spike fine, but he's not a pony and he can't carry an episode really. Also didn't like the owl. Maybe if it was like Gilda and could talk, it would have been better. Instead it's like a pet that can do all this shit somehow.

ReplyDelete
82. Spike.
Episode.

'Nuf said.

ReplyDelete
83. @Anonymous

Spike can carry an episode, It's just the owl slowed him down way too much. It was funny the first time watching him hoot away like a little bitch, but then it got tiring.

also, "he's not a pony" is a pretty terrible reason to rank him under the main cast.

ReplyDelete
84. IT'S NOT EVEN AN COMPLETE HOUR AND IT'S ALREDY ON YOUTUBE.

ReplyDelete
85. The Owl from the star master episode will haunt us all! It's smart enough to break the fourth wall and attack us directly... WE'RE ALL DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMEEEEEEEEEDDDD!

ReplyDelete
86. My eyes went wide at the ketchup part. Surprisingly gruesome for what is supposed to be a young girl's show. XD Spiked punch also got me.

And Applebloom and Sweetie Bell hopping onto their sisters' backs to watch the stars was fricking adorable.

ReplyDelete
87. So... anyone else found it funny how that episode had the exact same plot as the Gilda one but with the opposite aesop at the end?

ReplyDelete
88. I thought his name was Owlicious, haha.

ReplyDelete
89. @B127
Today's episode was also written by the same writer who wrote Griffon the Brush-off and I saw the similarity as well.

ReplyDelete
90. @Anon:

Really? Alright, that makes things even more odd than I thought oO;

ReplyDelete
91. Anyone notice the Skateboard and helm under Twilight's bed.

ReplyDelete
92. Mid-tier, IMHO.

The owl kinda' brought it down. Could have done more with him.

ReplyDelete
93. @Anonymous
Now consider the fact that his reaction to Twilight's last bit of verbal lashing was "She doesn't love me anymore".

And proceed to cry manly tears. ;-; Poor Spike.

Now for the most important question:

...Why does Pinkie Pie keep a Quail in a Bakery?

ReplyDelete
94. @Introbulus
"Why does Pinkie Pie..."

In the future, you'll be a lot happier if you assume any question starting with that phrase is answered by "Because she's Pinkie Pie." That's really all the explanation needed.

ReplyDelete
95. >>vopogon
color me stupidly innocent lingerie referance?

ReplyDelete
96. @Anonymous

Yeah, the episode was going great and Spike was really tearing it up until the fucking owl showed up.

It would be "WOW SPIKE IS BEING AWESOME YEAH!"

Then it would turn into the owl conflict and I would go "ugh".

ReplyDelete
97. Episode was okay, but could have been better. It felt a lot like a filler since this kind of plot appears in practically every cartoon / show sooner or later. Loved the "quills and sofas" store though.

Twilight (to Spike): "... It's just that sometimes, I need some help at night." Wait, what?

ReplyDelete
98. yo Seth you can remove the eventually now (if ya want to that is)

~D-Rave

ReplyDelete
99. @B127
While it is similar in style it's still a good lesson to learn so I'm glad they covered it. Solid episode overall, definitely mid-tier in my opinion but good all the same.

Actually, each week I'm a little nervous about the new episode being bad because I haven't seen one yet that I would call really bad or unwatchable. Does anyone else feel the same way about the season so far or do you have a couple episodes you would call unwatchable?

ReplyDelete
100. But you only sell two things!

Sorry, kid, fresh outta quills. Care to buy a sofa?

Confirmed Scootaloo worshipping Dash, the spiked punch joke, the bloody mouse, and the awesome dragon sequence, it was a prooty good episode.

Wait, Spike called the dragon by name ("Aboo")! They know each other! Just how old IS Spike?!

ReplyDelete
101. @last anon

the second part of the pilot and show stoppers i can't rewatch, i think they're pretty bad. don't like griffon the brush off or feeling pinkie keen much either, though they're better than the first two i mentioned.

didn't like today's much either. i know he turned out good but that owl was an absolute asshole.

also, why is everyone calling him 'Owlicious'? surely it would be more like Owlouicious? replacing the 'al' in 'alouicious' with 'owl'?

ReplyDelete
102. decent episode. i think i would have enjoyed it more if it hadn't come right after some absolutely amazing episodes.

i can't believe this show stole my idea for the quills and sofas store i wanted to open :(

ReplyDelete
103. I really liked it. I mean it was definitely mid-tier but hey, they can't ALL be celestia tier.

people say mid-tier like it's a bad thing but it really isn't. I mean it bugs me how some fans are like people who only rate things on a "ZONGBESTEVER" or "not worth it"scale, and to a lesser extent people who see anything below a 7/10 as horrible.

If this were in a slower part of the season, it would have been well enjoyed, but since it was after 2 celestia tier episodes and one high-tier, the mid-tier feels like a letdown.

ReplyDelete
104. I was hoping that Spike would use his flame to light the way for Twilight when they were escaping. Owlouicious better get the Zecora treatment and not appear anymore.

More importantly, no one really cares that Spike works himself so hard that he'll fall asleep right in the middle of something. He really is Twilight's slave

ReplyDelete
105. An enjoyable episode. Not my favorite, but it certainly wasn't a waste of time either. If this is as low as the bottom tier episodes go, this series has a long life ahead of it.

And I now have the strange urge to buy a sofa.

ReplyDelete
106. @Adrian Brony
I agree with you on that point as it bugs me too when people make mid tier seem like it's a bad thing.

Most good shows out there I think have a smattering of god-tier episodes, a fair amount of high-tier episodes and then most other episodes being solid, but enjoyable while only having a couple really low quality episodes in a season. It doesn't help that we've been somewhat spoiled the past few weeks with some very high quality episodes so maybe that makes people a little more critical about this episode like you said.

ReplyDelete
107. The problem with this episode is that Preachy Mom Twilight is so much worse than Socially Anxious Butt Monkey Twilight.

She was practically top-tier in "Green Isn't Your Color" and "Bird in the Hoof" but this episode dropped her down to, like, last place.

ReplyDelete
108. w're going to have a whole bunch of Dr.Whoof-Owlouicious jokes now aren't we?

ReplyDelete
109. 1. Equestria is infested with dragons
2. spike has narcolepsy
3. Twilights house is freaking awesome.

ReplyDelete
110. 1. Is the owl a permanent cast member now then?
2. NO MORE SECRET BUTT FUN FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUU-

ReplyDelete
111. Hmmm. It was a very good episode. Glad to see how dragons behave towards one another, but why didn't they bring Fluttershy? She would have just stared it into submission.

ReplyDelete
112. Spike's brother didn't treat him very well.

ReplyDelete
113. I thought this episode was cute, but man that owl owned up on everypony and everything.

That owl was a mean, lean, collating and fighting machine.

ReplyDelete
114. @Adrian Brony

I agree decent episode. Most of the episodes this season haven't been terrible as some have said.

ReplyDelete
115. Awwwwwww Spike, poor little jealous baby dragon... T_T

Finally an episode more focused on Spike (not Spike + Rarity), we need more of them coming! I'm a 30 years old guy, but still want to hug and cuddle that little fella <3

ReplyDelete
116. @Display Name

I always took it that he had to belch flames onto paper for it to work, or that it only works with scrolls.

ReplyDelete
117. Not quite celestia teir, but it's on par with Over a barrel

ReplyDelete
118. @Homfrog
Spike hatched when Twilight was a filly. Twilight made his egg hatch in "Cutie Mark Chronicles"

ReplyDelete
119. We finally get a reason why they brought Fluttershy instead of Spike in 'Dragonshy'

ReplyDelete
120. I thought the episode was overall enjoyable, but a little disappointing since it came across as pretty ham-fisted. Of course, I thought the same thing of Griffon Brush-Off and apparently this episode was written by the same guy, so there y'go...

Still, it was nice to see Spike in the spotlight for a little while. Even if he was screwing himself over half the time... it'd be nice to see him as the focus of more positive attention from the writers.

ReplyDelete
121. What is it with all the dragons on this show being pussies in a fight?

ReplyDelete
122. The episode was pleasant, but the Owl is just not an interesting target for Spike's jealousy, and got too much Sue treatment.

Now, if instead of an overpowered new pet, Twilight got a romantic interest, that would've been lots more fun...

ReplyDelete
123. @Anonymous
Still not seeing a lingere ref. Do you mean the saddle blanket he pulls out of the drawer?

ReplyDelete
124. Since these toys often come pony+pet, it doesn't surprise me at all that Hasbro wanted a pet to show up for Twilight Sparkle.

ReplyDelete
125. Id rate it below every other episode but its still a great one that made me laugh multiple times. I just get really dissapointed when they put in dragon sequences and then derp not make the dragons even remotely interesting and as a Huge fan of Zecora i had really hoped she would make an apperance.

Cant have my cupcakes and eat all of them too i guess BD

ReplyDelete
126. I actually yelled "DON'T GO IN THERE, SPIKE" when he was going into the cave. As in, out loud

ReplyDelete
127. @Anonymous
That's what I was thinking as well since, if I remember correctly, one of the Twilight toy sets comes with an owl. If the owl is indeed like a pet for Twilight then it really is an appropriate one for her. Plus, I also think we might not see too much of him in the future considering how rarely we see the pets of the other ponies.

ReplyDelete
128. I want to watch this episode on YouTube but the only two version up are crammed into a SD box but the picture is still Widescreen.

Any kind of estimate when someone might upload a version to YouTube that won't look like shit on my monitor?

ReplyDelete
129. Angel of Fluttershy fame probably gets the most camoes out of all the pets seen so far, but nothing over bearing.

If it's like that with Owl, it might be fine

ReplyDelete
130. @Homfrog

He was saying "Heya, bro" and not calling him by name. Because, as he said, they're "like brothers, you know".

That said I liked this episode. I was most disappointed that the dragon at the end was just a recolor of the Dragonshy dragon. I'm interested in the genetic diversity of these things but so far we've only seen two adults and baby that looks like neither one. I'm wondering if there are wild type ones with only a certain range of colors, and and Spike is some kind of domestic or designer variety with more contrast in his color, softer edges etc. Would make sense seeing as hatching dragon eggs seems to be typical for entrance exams like Twilight's.

Of course nobody probably cares at all about that, but other than the dragon I don't have much to add. Mixed feelings about the owl. CMC seem to be cutest when they're not the stars.

ReplyDelete
131. @Damhoof

That was my main problem with the episode, was the dragon sequence. I was thinking maybe Spike would learn a life lesson from this guy, but instead all we got was FUCK YOU IM GOING TO KILL YOU.

Agreed on need of Zecora. It might have been a more interesting episode if they'd completely dropped the giant dragon part and instead had Spike become Zecora's assistant. Then preferably dodge the standard 'try to make Twilight jealous' notion to instead go with him just realizing he missed the others and that he should own up to his own problems maturely with Zecora's guidance. That would be a more solid story (in my opinion) and give both of those under-appreciated characters more screen time.

133. Okay...if Owlicious becomes permanent through the rest of the season or the whole show, then i'm going to bet all my bits, that they gonna give Dash a pet too...

I was a little disappointed that the dragon was a recolor as well, but I can sympathize with the animation team. From what I've heard they had a really limited budget (less than most animated shows) and a very strict time schedule.

It makes me wonder what we will see in season two? Since the show has been proven popular I wonder if Hasbro has given them a bigger budget and a little more time to work on the episodes. It would be amazing if season two was even higher quality than what we are getting this season.

137. I didn't much like how Spike's initial reaction when threatened by a gigantic creature who wants to kill him was,
1. Try to make friends.
Upon failing that,
2. Insult him.
Does he have a suicide wish or what? When a guy pulls a gun to your face you don't tell him how not afraid of him you are.

Well, look at it this way; he's just a kid. The very young aren't exactly known for wisdom.

139. I really liked this episode. But I do have to agree the owl ruined it a bit. It's not horrible, at all, but the owl just comes off so much like a Mary Sue, since the owl's pretty much perfect and does nothing wrong. I hope it ends up like Gummy, and isn't even mentioned again.

I like how they're putting in some stuff for their adult audience.

Overall I enjoyed it (it was funny when spike was being a villain x3)

ReplyDelete
140. Ok episode with some definite highlights.

Spiked the punch? They got away with that?

Spikely Whiplash was awesome! With that kind of inherent ability, Spike must be of the lawful evil variety. It seems wisdom was his dump stat though.

The Quill and Sofa bit was good.

The Owl was... yeah, kinda one-dimensional. If they kept it to working nights, Twilight's final explanation would make more sense, but it seemed awfully awake and lively during the day as well.

And taking on a dragon? Why does Fluttershy fear these things again?

ReplyDelete
141. @Batty Gloom

Pretty much spot on. The whole episode was Spike doing dumb kid things. Taking on too much responsibility, trying to impress his elders, getting huffy over a rival, trying to get said rival into trouble with said elder, running away from home, biting off more than he can chew...

I don't really get all the hate toward the Owl though. It wasn't a Mary Sue character because it wasn't a character at all -- it was just a plot vehicle used to get Spike to behave emotionally. The same result could have been gained with a series of accidents that weren't his fault but that he got blamed for, or by the other Ponies from the mane cast lending a hoof to Twilight's aid for a while.

The episode's goal wasn't "Hey, look at this awesome Owl", but rather "Spike, you're only hurting yourself with your poor behavior."

146. I'm inclined to agree with Batty on Dragon behavior. Traits like being ancient, giant, powerful, and reclusive don't exactly lend themselves to being good with social situations. For all we know, wild Dragons may see someone like Spike as a sell-out for happily serving Ponies.

ReplyDelete
147. @Batty Gloom
maybe its because hes a magic dragon, different from the chromatic ones, breeded especially for the students at canterlot's university as their assistants

149. Character A and Character B are very close

Character C appears and fills role for Character A very similar to that of Character B

Character B gets jealous and tries to sabotage Character C's standing with Character A

Character A finds out and Character B leaves in a huff

Character B gets into trouble and is saved by Character C

We all know ponies make everything better, but I know I'm not the only one who has seen this EXACT plot a hundred times before. Not a bad episode, and it offered up some always-appreciated character development, but I just couldn't get into it.

Don't be sad, little guy.
Even if they're not familiar with the name "Snidely Whiplash", they certainly will be familiar with the melodramatic villain with top hat and waxed mustache tying a woman to the railroad tracks.

157. I get that the owl was merely a plot device, and perhaps a tie-in to the Twilight toy released last year.

On the other hand, that owl was unquestionably an asshat to Spike. And only being able to say "hoo"? Would be fine, except for the fact that every other line of dialog/emote in this series is pretty much perfect IMO. Think of all the awesome things that Angel and Opal have done over the series. In contrast, the owl does seem kind of one dimensional, and the way that Spike (and even Twilight) respond to it as if it were engaging in dialog just kind of emphasized that point for me.

Sorry owl, it was fun... but... ya gots ta go!

162. The earlier comment that this was the first non-CMC episode with the CMC in it is wrong. The very first episode (unless it was the second) had all three CMC members huddled next to each other under a table after Nightmare Moon's sudden appearance.

175. Dastardly Spike is awesome. The episode had it's moments but overall just ok. Still better then most other shows on nowadays, so as others have said; if this is what passes as a "mediocre" episode for the show, then heck, they'd have to purposely fail (ala a certain CMC song) to actually do wrong.

And damn, they just keep scaling up (seewutididthere) the threat in the Everfree Forest! Manticores, celestial ursas, hydras (the bog looks to be on the forest's edge), cockatrices and now freakin' dragons! Even the flowers (poison joak) and CUTE monsters like parasprites are deadly!

Zecora either has some powerful wards keeping away nasties, or is a badass in her own right to be living there..

ReplyDelete
176. I thought it was inconsistent. Twilight says that the owl is meant for night time help, but the owl is shown during the day doing all kinds of stuff.

I think if the episode took place all at night would have made more sense, but that little detail of helping during the day turned me off.

ReplyDelete
177. @Anonymous
I heard "Oh, and gee". She does say it sort of fast so the words kind of blend together so I can see how some people have been hearing it as OMG.

ReplyDelete
178. Okay, comments as I watch the episode.

Spike and the Doctor have something in common. "Bowties are cool."

"And now the punch has been... spiked!" OW. that kinda hurt... but now that I think on it, not too bad.

Yep, there's that thing that birds do. The whole, 180 degree head turn thing. Having had parakeets for years, I totally love how they do that. Wish I could... you know, without snapping my neck.

Allouicious? Allouicious? Are you kidding me? Really? That's the best you could come up with? Were all the good owl names taken? You could have gone with so many names, and "Owl-licious" was what you went for? Hermes, Athena, Merlin... there are so many names I can't even think of them all. But you went for one that sounds like an owl-flavored treat?

Oh, no. We're not doing this. we're not doing the whole "Owl noise sounds like 'Who' and so causes confusion."

Apparently we are.

Not really finding myself impressed with this episode at the... 8:34 mark. Still time.

How's Twilight going to feed the owl? Owls are carnivorous birds of prey. I'm thinking that Fluttershy would object to her taking small creatures to feed to her owl.

Why does Pinkie have a live quail in her house?

And why did Spike go to Sugar Cube Corner for writing supplies?

Spike lit a feather on fire. With apparently his anger. OH GOD SPIKE CAN MAKE FIRE WITH HIS MIND.

Spike is already working hard at correcting a definite deficiency of mustache twirling, cape-wearing, stovepipe-hat-adorned villains lately. I miss Snidely Whiplash and Dick Dasterdly. They were good bad guys.

Yes, the PURPLE CATNIP MOUSE is soooo lifelike, Spike. REALLY not happy with this episode.

SPIKE. YOU IDIOT. NEVER. EVER. EVER invoke MURPHY. YES, IT CAN GET WORSE.

Ooh, another dragon. Sith liiiiikes...

And then it gets predictable again.

Bleh. Gotta say, this is about the same to me as a CMC episode.

Then again, I'm tired and in a bit of a cranky mood, so that could affect it.

180. I was so hoping that spike was going to kick that stupid owls ass and be the hero of the episode. Hope the owl never appears again. Other than that it was a very funny episode with the evil spike and pretty dark with the dead mouse.

182. As someone who just got passed over for a promotion, I know pretty much exactly how Spike feels.

ReplyDelete
183. I totally agree with Darkhawk1 on this ep. The owl's name felt like they just wanted to make a cheap pun on the name like "Hummingway" from "A bird in the hoof"
Cape wearing, mustache twirling, stovepipe hat adorned villians must make a comeback and Spike has shown this!
That being said, Villian Spike was downright devious in his thought process...but seriously Twilight Sparkle is not an idiot and would have seen through the "bloody sacrifice" in seconds.
Also yes I get it the owl sounds like he's saying "Who" enough with that joke already!

I know that a lot of people compare the pilot eps to Sailor Moon but that bit of Spike lighting the feather just holding it in his hand made me think of a simillar scene. Sure it's funny showing his anger but I just got a small callback seeing that.

At the end of the episode I wanted to slap Spike for being such an idiot. Sure he felt like Twilight didn't value him but come on Twilight Sparkle is a bookworm not a brick wall, Spike!
She would have been beside herself with worry thinking of where he would have gone since she is his psuedo mother/big sister/friend. Twilight may have had the owl for a few days but she's known Spike for years, she would never just drop him like a hot potato. Overall, not the best episode but they can't all be winners. It had its moments like the "punch has been spiked" line that was good.

ReplyDelete
184. Apparently the crime rate in Ponville must be very low to nil as Rarity just walks right out of the shop and leaves it unlocked without a second thought. Though she should look at getting a lock on those doors Rarity you don't want someone like say....a figure in black sneaking in and stealing your precious cat's toys do you? :P

ReplyDelete
185. Looking at the other episodes Cindy Morrow has written I can see why today's episode was mediocre for most. She was responsible for Griffon the Brush-off, and Show Stoppers both of which aren't exactly fan favorites though her one redeeming episode is Winter Wrap Up.

With this being considered a meh episode I can only hope she improves next season. The same can be said for writer Dave Polsky who can write some great comedy scenes but needs to work on his storytelling abilities. Overall I would say the episodes written by those two have been the weakest while the strongest have been written by M.A. Larson and Amy Keating Rogers. Everyone else I think is somewhere in between.

Still we've gotten a lot of great episodes this season with two potentially high to Celestia tier episodes in the coming weeks. I also think with the experience the team has gotten from writing this first season they will have a better idea of who should write which episodes for season two. With that said I have high hopes that we should see better writing next season as the show matures and feedback from this season makes its way back to the team.

First, realize that until fairly recently, it wasn't uncommon to leave your doors unlocked all the time. Outside of the Big City, most towns even in the 30s didn't lock up. It's still that way in some areas.

Second, this isn't the first time we've seen that. People go in and out of Twilight's house uninvited all the time (mostly Dash), and I don't think we've ever seen a door that's clearly locked.

ReplyDelete
187. @Escher
Angel did lock Fluttershy out of the house during the beginning of A Bird in the Hoof, but that is the only instance I can think of where a door is clearly locked.

ReplyDelete
188. @Escher
True ponies come in and out of Twilight's house all the time, but you can always agrue that its also a library and it wouldn't be very practical to have people knock on the door every time they wanted to browse.
Anonymous did point out that Fluttershy was locked out of her house in the opening of "A Bird in the Hoof" so its not unheard of for locks to be on doors in Ponyville. Still I chalk it up to a very low crime rate and/or very trusting people since no pony strikes me as a potential criminal.
Except for that grey one with the bubble cutie mark and the derpy yellow eyes, you know the one, she may be a maile mare but I say she's casing houses for her next big heist! Soon they will put out a warrant for her arrest for "Grand Theft Muffin" heh nah Derpy Hooves couldn't do that.

ReplyDelete
189. Given the small-town setting and that everypony seems to know each other, I'd say there's a pretty good chance that there's a zero-crime rate in Ponyville. There's been plenty of times where ponies just leave their front doors wide open. Heck, Rainbow Dash's home doesn't even have doors!

The locks are probably just to keep them from blowing open during hard weather. It's not like ponies would do well with modern doorknob-lock mechanisms.
