A short discussion on the canon of Equestria Girls happened over on writer Nick Confalone's twitter last week. Considering this debate happens every time we post anything at all regarding Sunset Shimmer, it's interesting to see the perspective from one of the show staffers. Josh Haber later hops in to throw his two cents into the mix as well.
In the end, is EG canon in relation to Friendship is Magic? According to these two, it is.

Lions Gate has confirmed a bit of extra information on the upcoming My Little Pony Movie DVD/Blu-Ray release. For the sake of simplicity, have a bullet list:
