Discord has always been sort of an enigma. On one hand, he's completely off the wall insane for a good amount of the time, and on the other, hes a downright genius. Newer episodes always seem to put him 20 steps ahead of everyone else. It's still a possibility that the entire season finale was planned by him at the start, allowing himself to be back stabbed to get Twilight Sparkle to evolve. He has a pretty big history with Celestia to compound that.
