• Fan-Made Pony MMO Being Brainstormed on Ponychan

Can /pony/ combat the legendary laziness of 4chan when it comes to fan made games?

Those of us from /v/ have seen thousands of these pop up and disappear.  But this ponychan thread looks pretty dedicated!

They need some more people though.  If you are interested in tossing your 2 cents in, or just checking it out, check out the ponychan link below.

    1. If they pull if off, I'd have to join just because I'd be so impressed.

    4. MMO? Never gonna happen. Only MMO games made by fanbases I've seen are huge ones like pokemon, and they've only got one MMO and it isn't very good

If they can pull it off, then go them, but I don't think we're gonna see much beyond simple-ish single player MLP games

    5. Katawa Shoujo hasn't made much head way lately. I wouldn't expect much to come from a Brony game either. :(

    6. I still think they should do a fighting game, instead of a MMO.

    7. I adore the idea. I respect the idea. I want to think it'll happen. But if it's a graphical MMORPG it is almost guaranteed to die.

      Uptime.
First off, the people who already play an MMORPG like WoW are unlikely to invest nearly as much time into playing this one. Second, more assets means more required to install the game to play it. This means that hopping into it quickly like on a lunchbreak is unlikely. (Adventure Quest comes to mind as an example of something that fits the lunch-break gameplay thing well.) And assuming it manages the uptime and attracts a following, then it would need money to keep investing in improving the servers as the userbase grew. That exact matter of having to scale with the audience is why a lot of commercial MMOs end up dying off.

On the other hand, if they were putting together a MU* or a browser-based MMO (now I'm thinking Star Pirates or various facebook games), I can see them having a lot less issues with scaling for the audience. (Dreamhost's basic service is enough to do a fairly workable browser-based game for a few thousand daily players, judging from the limits and average usage stats I see ) Yet, in that case I'd be concerned about if they'ld attract many users at all, and if they did, are they taking away from the same users who would find more use from a forums system or even posting comments and emailing support here with EqD.

Basically, the idealistic side of me says YES YES PLEASE DO IT while the wannabe indie game developer side of me says that it's over-scoped for a free-to-play commercial project and next to impossible for a hobby project labor-of-love.

    8. Now something that could work (and still have the audience issues I mentioned before, mind you) is to have a mostly single-player browser-based visual-novel styled adventure game in Equestria. Allow for collecting items, player-to-player chat, player item trading / selling, and make it hook into the backend of an existing forums system. Huge cuts on what would be necessary to work the game, and there'ld still be some sense of community.

But then it'ld basically an AQ clone with ponies and forums. I guess I'm not thinking hard enough.

Super Robot Wars meets My Little Pony.

      @Retl
Summed up my thoughts quite nicely. I still would really love to have any kind of pony game, though!

    12. If they manage to actually get a finished product, I will definitely give it a try.

However, I expect this to kinda die out in the early development stages like most online development groups have done in the past. As far as I know, the only such group that has (almost) succeeded was 4leaf Studios, the people making Katawa Shoujo.

Best of luck to them, regardless.

    13. Yes! I have been thinking of this since I joined the fandom. Give me a ring-a-ding if you need any help related to art. Sure to check out the thread to.

    14. Hello, this is RainbowBloom the founder of this project. I can assure you that our dedication to this project is probably even higher than any other fan or studio made project out there.
There's nothing we can do at the moment to change the minds of the people that think this project won't get off the ground, but in reality it already has.
A lot of the points some of you bring up have already been addressed in the ponychan thread and in our forums.
I'm a little surprised equestriadaily picked us up as a story, I wasn't planning on contacting you guys till we had an alpha test of the game but oh well.
please direct any questions the at the appropriate thread on our forums: http://skullinabox.com/FIM_forums/

      Thank you very much.

    15. Hello, I'm an animation student and a character animator on this project.

Those of you who are skeptical have every right to be, but I for one intend to stick with this project to the end.

That said, I will try to answer what questions I can, keeping in mind that I'm getting the artistic end of this stick than the technical one.

"REALLY hope they pull it off, i will donate money for server upkeep :)"

That won't be necessary; what you _can_ do is host a server yourself. :)

"I doubt it, Iv been in many /v/ brainstorming sessions, some of them even last awhile but they never go anywhere."

Thankfully, I think most of us aren't from /v/.

"First off, the people who already play an MMORPG like WoW are unlikely to invest nearly as much time into playing this one."

Noted. This is why we're making it a casual game, rather than a WoW clone.

    19. Erg... Is the very notion of someone trying to make a Fan Game the death knell of the Fan OVA?
