ReplyDeleteHim is pretty much the best villain of all time, but I like this Discord guy.
Until I saw him*, I didn't realise how much I didn't want it to be some dark creature with a Christian Bale in The Dark Knight type voice. Pleased with this.

For those that think Discord can't be seriously evil, I have to say this: What we're shown is a situation in which Discord feels in control (he feels he's already won) - characters that smug can turn into real beasts as sore losers.

ReplyDeleteThe design could be a BIT less goofy but this is only a two minute clip, so maybe he has a slightly more threating form when he isn't just jerking the mane cast around. However, the fact that they're emulating Q, down to having the man who played the role himself voicing the character is incredibly hopeful.

Still, the fact that he seems to have the ability to bend reality to his will, I hope he doesn't have any dumb moments as a villain. Because with powers like that, it's a very likely senario.
Still, I'm not too worried.
Im not watching it so it doesn't ruin it for me.

ReplyDeleteAs for Discord/Q, just remember Q may have been a bit of a prankster at times but he could be downright scary when things didn't go as he planed.
The reaction to Discord reminds me of the ponies reactions to Rarity's dresses.

ReplyDeleteRainbow Dash losing her wings - THE CLICHÉ IS DEAD. LONG LIVE THE CLICHÉ. Seriously, though, now that they're going to do that in the show, we can finally move on from all those what-if scenarios with the Mane 6 losing their wings/horns. Final judgment: awesome.
ReplyDeleteDiscord's voice - ...admittedly, not at all what I was expecting, but also about a hundred and twenty percent cooler than what I was expecting. Now that I think about it, we've already had a straight-up "evil" antagonist; this guy looks more like a Trixie-type character who also happens to be a god. Final judgment: fucking awesome.
So that's an "awesome" and a "fucking awesome". Hmm. Season 2's looking to be pretty good, I'd say.
WELP Looks like I'm going to have to avoid Ponibooru (or join up and filter out "Discord"). I've been happily following most of these spoiler images, but I want Discord to be a surprise.

ReplyDeleteOkay, this short clip has proven three things about Discord:
ReplyDelete1. He has been confirmed as being the freaky Chimera/Dragon hodgepodge thing depicted in those stained glass windows.
2. He apparently has the ability to turn unicorns and pegasi into earth ponies.
3. He seems to be less of an all-powerful, unspeakably evil eldritch abomination and more of a miscevious trickster spirit (or he's just VERY affably evil).
Truth be told, Discord seems like a pretty likeable antagonist (hey, it's still My Little Pony, I don't think things will be getting TOO dark). Also, I like his voice. I wonder who Discord's VA is. Anyone else think he sounds familiar?

Yep. Discord looks exactly as I expected—just like he’s shown on the stained-glass windows in the background of the “worried cast” wallpaper image. A close look at them will show all sorts of tantalizing hints about Equestria’s history.

ReplyDeleteI mean, seriously. Nightmare Moon may have been evil, but it was the sort of evil like, say, David Xanatos, or the Man With The Golden Gun. You know, classy, elegant, refined.
This guy, I like his personality, but WOW. WOW is he ugly.
If people are disappointed it's probably because of all the grim/dark fanfics around here. Remember the demographic this show is being made for.

@Flutteryay I for one am stoked! As a young boy, I grew up watching Star Trek: The Next Generation and was always fascinated by Q and his antics. So not everyone is disappointed. ;)

Is it weird that I'm more excited to see how Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Twilight, and Rarity deal with the loss of their wings/horns than to get to know more about Discord? I expect Rainbow Dash and Twilight in particular to have a lot of trouble coping with it.

I'm disappointed, developers, you had such a great chance to surprise us all, and give us a badass villain, but no, you gave us a shitty snake that can be easily squashed by Nightmare Moon. ReplyDeleteI, too am disappointed about one thing, however. The reaction of some of the fans to this guy.
I mean, heck, the show's creators may refer to bronies by way of in-jokes, but they're hardly likely to make episodes or villains which are entirely-brony-orientated. This is still a family show, so they aren't going to make Discord overly evil. This version of him is wonderfully crazy. Just right for a pony villain.
Besides, he is the embodiment of CHAOS, so his appearance is meant to be chaotic. More people would have been disappointed in him being a male NMM counterpart.
Discord doesn't look so evil, anyways, I can't wait!

At first I saw what he looked like, and I was kinda disappointed - with bronies doing the usual thing and hyping it up into some sort of awesome badass evil destroyer.

I'm pretty sure she said that she hated how all the villains would lose because the ponies sang a song or became their friends or something.
Not sure if it has already been mentioned, but seriously Discord sounds and acts just like Q from Star Trek: TNG.
ReplyDeleteThe fact the creators of the show would put a reference like that in their cartoon is pretty hilarious in its own right. Plus in my opinion, this is how discord should look, he's not very menacing looking but he is very clever. And in a way doesn't that make him all the more evil?

I, for one, love this new character and the way he behaves. I'm no trekkie so I can't say much about John De Lancie, but from what I've seen so far, he was perfect for the part. I can't wait for these new episodes. The plot is leaning toward a cliche'd direction, but considering the positive comments some of the developers made on the writing this time around, I'm very interested to see how it unfolds.

Discord is already more threatening that NMM, he managed to take away their powers without even trying. To top it all off, he has the elements in his control, and they have to beat his game to get them back. And he's voiced by Q!

Discord definetly fits the bill for something chaoticlly aligned, everything is a game, merely done on a whim and nothing more. At least, thats how it seems. Also, I love how he lays down the rules, cause I know he is going to change them up as he pleases. His form is also reflects that, living up to chaos's nature of "anything is possible". His voice also sounds vaguely familiar, I forget where, but I've heard it before.

I'm starting to see where the rating for MLP FiM is coming back to bite us. Being TV Y is really starting to show. I wish MLP FiM was TV Y7 or PG maybe then we could get a good villain. That actually seemed you know chaotic or was at least a bit scary.

ReplyDeleteConsidering he seems to indicate knowing about the "Fall Weather Friends" incident with Rainbow Dash and Applejack, all he needs to do is mention a certain party with Mr. Turnip, Sir Lints-a-lot, Rocky, and Madame LaFlour.
I'm sure that'll make for good conversation among friends!
Now that I think about it, this might actually be an opportune time for Twilight's own dose of Cutie Mark Failure-induced insanity. After all, her small break from reality in Season 1 didn't really have anything to do with her special purpose (though you could argue she went a bit unhinged from a back-firing spell) so much as a crippling worry over disappointing the Princess. It would certainly add even more conflict to the plot and perhaps her overcoming it could be this season's 'spark.'

Discord made me go wtf. I imagined him to be some badass pony. Oh well, it makes him look more comical as it is a children's show AND makes him look more...chaotic. Makes sense for him in character but makes everybody else either go wtf or lol.

ReplyDeleteI really don't get the people who are commenting about being let down. Discord seems like he's going to be absolutely hilarious. We already know who's going to win, the fun part is his personality and how he acts until he loses. Im happy we didn't get another 'I am the evil _____ who will ______ your souls and speak in a dark brooding accent' villain. My favorite villains are the ones who have more personality than 'Evil'.
