VastaKustutaDespite not knowing the characters or setting involved (Pinkie aside), I still enjoyed this story immensely. The author does a great job of providing you with enough information to know what's going on without breaking the flow of writing at all. The end result is a delightfully silly and wonderfully entertaining read. Also, it's quite short, so nopony has any excuse not to read it right now! :D

VastaKustutaI don't know what happened last night. I woke up next to Screwball this morning. I went to the kitchen and saw 10k just lying on the floor. I ignored it and went to get some breakfast from the kitchen where I found a stallion tied up and gagged. Then Fleur came out of the bathroom and asked me if we were followed last night.
My head hurts and the only clue as to what happened was one of the Royal Guards Chariots outside and some armor and a helmet in my closet.
What the hell did I do last night?!

This is the most researched Harry Dresden/My Little Pony crossover of all the Harry Dresden/My Little Pony crossovers I have read (2). Sadly, the great knowledge of the Dresden universe is overly expressed, I don't care about Mab's rehab style. The books are more funny, less talky. You have noticed things in the most recent books that I didn't even think of, thats cool. You beat the other story in Dresden know how but the other one beats you in tone accuracy.

Perhaps it may be because i am not familiar with the crossover. Still funny though. The story only becomes interesting after the appearance of Pinkie. Hopefully it'll continue on that note.

VastaKustutaYeah, but you could spread it out a little, only infodumping when it's necessary. For example, non-Dresden Fans don't know Harry's been injured, and Dresden Fans have already gotten a taste for Mab's kind of TLC so that isn't necessary.
Also, if the Outer Gates open into the world of fiction, where do beings like 'He who walks behind' fit in? He doesn't belong to any other realm of fiction and claiming he's Lovecraftian is a stretch at best.

VastaKustutaYeah, the Outer Gates are basically what separates Reality from not-Reality. Fiction-land is part of not-Reality, but there's a lot more out there.

VastaKustutaIt took a moment, but I've figured out what this means.
'Structured internalized casting' is building the spell and all of its related effects (the spell-form) before it's cast. This is generally how magic works in video games; you charge it up and let it go. Once the spell-form is released it's on its own with no further direction from the caster.
The 'magical matrix' was the hard part. A matrix is a structure in which something is created. Therefor, a magical matrix is a structure in which magic is built. She's talking about staves and such that can be used in spellcasting. In this case, the structured casting takes place within the magical matrix of a unicorn's horn.
The opposite of this, "improvisational manipulation" is maintaining control of a spell, perhaps changing its form while it's active. An example of this would be, say, creating a bolt of energy, guiding it manually through an obstacle course, and detonating it at the end. The manipulates the spell-form for the duration it its lifespan.
By not being internally constructed in a staff, horn, or what have you, the caster would have to basically throw the energy needed for the spell out into the open and form it from there without the aid of a matrix. Theoretically, it would be possible to cast an internalized improvisational spell by building it on a matrix and maintaining control as it's active. I wonder why she didn't think of that.

One is dependable, the other is flexible.

I have noticed one move away from the canon, I don't know if it was intentional on your part. The "princess in another castle" gag shouldn't happen as the "fax-machine" spell is attuned to Celestia herself. (The same way, letters always appear from Spike's mouth, wherever he is at the moment - Though the series, we get to see Princess reeiving letters and they always appear at her current location.)

Noticed a bunch of spelling and typo errors in chapter 3 but unfortunately since I'm reading on my phone, I can't properly post editing notes. I'd recommend going over this again. I mean there was an "=" sign in the middle of a word...

VastaKustutaI'm a bit sad that the maze scene and the discordified Mane 6 didn't happen. More importantly though, why did Discord reveal the location of the Elements? I figured you could do whatever you wanted with the middle of the Discord story as long as the start (the scene with Celestia and Discord that you did worked well) and the end (finding the Elements in a book not even guarded for the lulz) was kept the same.
VastaKustutaBasically, I'm surprised that you are making the plot so drastically different by disrupting the previously expected end of the story. I guess it's not bad persay, but you are now totally out of the plotline of the episode.

VastaKustutaAlso, I'm finding it hard to be afraid of Denarians given that they're ponies now. Hopefully further description will rectify that.
Done some more thinking:
VastaKustuta1 We haven't seen the elements yet... I guess they aren't really in the book.
2 What's with the rule about not hitting the audience? Isn't Discord invulnerable anyway? My theory is that he can be hurt - his reality warping can render anything but the elements of harmony harmless, but you CAN sucker-punch him.
3 Either way, the rule can serve two purposes - first, Discord can break the game at any moment by putting himself in harm's way. Two, perhaps Denarians can be tricked into hitting him. That won't make him default the game but might take a denarian or two out of the picture.
4 I wonder what Denarians think about taking part in the game. I think they might have lost control of the situation...
I'm actually considering reading Dresden Book so I can continue reading this series without fear of spoilers.

VastaKustutaOk, I have read the last chapter and it dawned on me just how bucked the world is.
VastaKustuta1 After all the talko of how dangerous the knowledge of the Outside would be in the wrong hands, we pretty much got Rainbow Dash on live tv. Even wizards who don't own TVs will learn of such an event and someone somewhere is bound to make a connection.
2 A tornado implies the fallen have been well attuned and now have full access to their hosts' abilities. Imagine what evil Twilight can do out of cartoonland. With a demonic energy source handy, we can assume her capable of acting at her full power. Just one example - during the Ursa Minor incident, she was able to milk a barn of cows, a block away from her. That's high grade telekinesis... with no line of sight required. Now think of the many squishy parts humans have.
3 All other interested parties will be rushing to that park - even if Discord isn't there, the situation is likely to escalate rapidly.
And finally, with Lasciel taken out and Deidre dead, there are 8 coins to go round between the five ponies. Who do you guys think got which one?

In related story news, we have outsiders now. People from the land of make believe. Ponies from beyond the gate and under demonic influence. I wonder at what point the White Council will decide to get involved.
The White Council? Hoo boy, after everything they've been through in recent years... That could be the equivalent of pushing the big red button, especially if they decide that the best solution is simply to kill the mane six.

VastaKustuta@YetAnotherBrony Well, I'll have to see how the ending goes for a full comparison. The ending of "Dangerous Business" was rather out of left field. The World Snake seemed too much like a 'last boss' rather than a meaningful adversary, only there to provide difficulty in retrieving the flower instead of a plot-relevant antagonist. A better rationale would have been if it was deliberately keeping them from the flower for nefarious purposes related to Twilight's recovery. BUT, in that case its existence and importance to the story would have to be introduced very early on. As it is, it simply doesn't fit into the rest of the narrative, and then is practically forgotten once they cure Twilight, further indicating it as a mere plot-convenient object. There is also the business with the cave and the crater which are at best barely covered. In a story, one should never go into detail about extranious side-plots one doesn't plan on expounding upon immediately or later on. If they have no relevance to the story, they are best left out. I always look to "Lord of the Rings", and how everything in the narrative had a definitive purpose toward driving the story and developing the world in which it occurred. Side details not expounded upon, such as the Valar, were mere mentions so they didn't distract from the important depictions.

1 Lash really is the voice of reason in the group. With her springing from Harry's brow, I am expecting an Athena reference at some point.
2 so... no Vincian magic here... that means its not Krynn. I thought Nick sent them to fetch the dragon orbs.
3 This world accepts ponies but what of others? Pinky could remain a pony even in Warhammer 40k but she is special. If they run into some SF setting and Dash is rendered anthro, she will be useless and that means no air support for the fight...
4 lol... oh, so that's where they are. FUS-RO-YAY about to become canon.
5 Aaand the story earns the grimdark tag. Also, Deamonshy's faux-affable manner is perfectly chilling.
6 Harry falling to his death will probably become a running gag. Especially if the next setting is Star Wars.
7 Aerial combat. I was expecting Deamonshy to milk her mind control for all it was worth. But that would make the story just that - predictable. Nice to see Dash use her brain but the damage worries me - Lash can only heal Harry.
8 ...party nerve gas... Pinky is a bit of a one-trick pony...
9 ...and instantly makes up for it by breaking demonic mind control with the power of chocolate. Awesome.
With what we have seen from Dash and Pinky, Twilight is going to be sooo broken...

some sort of antimagic device, doesn't matter which. And probably some sort of adamantine, mithril or adamantium. otherwise going against Celestia and Twi is just going to end in lots and lots of pain.
maybe a few tings from 40k. helpful if you want to stop a Chaos Spirit ;)
try going to Exorcist, Left Behind or one of those cheesy over-the-top religious worlds too to get some Crosses of Demon Slaying, or maybe Solomon's Mines to get a Seal of some sort. helps when fighting the demon-possessed.
Pinkie would be able to push out a fallen angle just to do something silly.

Having thought about it, I disagree with Dash' statement. The royal guards have all the effectiveness of imperial stormtroopers and the whole team should have more than enough power to take on Cadence, as long as they don't let her throw too much mind control around. Also, she is clearly "straight-discorded" so no power of love for her.

VastaKustutaIt'd down a subtle difference in how Harry's brand of mind magic works vs. Twilight's. Twilight is directly placing the memories into her friend's head, while Harry's more nudging the pony's mind to access all those memories on it's own.

VastaKustutaYeah, Cadance just isn't a fighter. The Want it Need it spell could have some scary combat applications (like casting it on a grenade) but that sort of thinking wouldn't occur to Cadence, and Saluriel (like any proper demon) wasn't overly impressed with the whole "love magic" direction of Cadance's powers.
Also, considering her ties to The Power of Love, being Discorded/Denarianed was probably hampering her quite a bit.
Well, you probably noticed that the "want it need it" spell is inspierd by the mythological "apple of discord" ;P
VastaKustutaShe could also focus the charm on herself to get herself some suicidally obedient slaves. Both of those uses would surely appeal to a deamon - we are lucky that Saluriel is such a one trick pony.
Come to think of it, they were extremely lucky - that could have been the creepiest fight in the whole storyline.
VastaKustutaHave to agree there; if Cadance had wound up with a different coin from a demon with a proper appreciation of what she could do, she would've been scary.
VastaKustutaNot a big spoiler, so I don't think there's any harm in revealing that Cadance getting a coin was kind of a last-minute choice for the bad guys; she got the one was supposed to go to Twilight, on account of Twilight getting sent on her lunar vacation.
Since Nick needs Twilight alive, the Moon must have some sort of atmosphere -Not a big spoiler but is means Fancypants might still be alive. (he is stuck on the moon but he isn't stuck there with a bored demon)
VastaKustutaHmm. She could still pull a Pell but the plot has just gotten another kind of interesting. You might receive some threats if we don't get the next chapter soon.
VastaKustutaShe should have built an altitude and rainboom her instead of kicking. That might have caused enough damage to give her a chance to escape.
Now the question of whether cartoon ponies have souls have become really important. If they do, all we need is a single trip through the Outside and a 5000 gold diamond... (sorry, couldn't stay serious for long)

VastaKustuta- It seems they need help from elsewhere now - getting another fictional universe into the game could give them all the adventage they need, or completely destroy the plot. Both they and you must step carefully here (then again, I am sure you already have a plan...)
- Cadence is restored to normal. What happens when she meets Celestia? Nobody knows that at the moment but between the two of them, Shining and Cadence actually have the power to defeat her.
- Fluttershy remembers more from her possession than she lets on. She has turned from "a nice, shy girl who can stare you down into submission if you push her" to "a nice, shy girl who can shout you through a wall if you push her". The law of conservation of detail distates, that someone Will push her before the end of the story.
- Where is Derpy? Did she manage to neutralise the demon venom?
- With all her power, Celestia still can bleed. Harry should have tried to sucker-punch Discord back in chapter 3.
- I wonder if any of the fanfic Dash could fill in for her.

Now that would be a battle to see!... Provided you were a few hundred miles away and out of the blast radius.
VastaKustutaThe good things in this chapter were realizing they needed to take Celestia head on but had no ability to do so and Fluttershy retaining the shout ability giving them the hint that maybe they should play the bad guys' game and use the resources of the outside.
VastaKustutaOn the other hand Harry has a spell that breaks Discord's control and Dash could have just flown him up to her back.
Or like others suggested, have Pinkie pull them outside or use a better attack against Celestia.
Also if Dash wasn't willing to hurt Fluttershy or Pinkie seriously while Discorded or even Applejack (she only tackled her, didn't try to brain her) I'm surprised she was willing to be so vicious with the Princess she obviously has massive love and respect for.
It just seems like too many idiot balls, plot contrivances and scenes for their own sake. I'm assuming that Fluttershy's shouts, and Pinkie and Harry's current grief reminding them of the prior conversation of turning Dash into a cyborg with laser eyes will clue them in to get help from the outside, but really Flutter's shouts should have been enough.
Dash has just been the punching bag of the whole story to the point that the end of the chapter had almost no actual impact. I'm just desensitized to it here.
