Spike has enjoyed a season of great growth. From getting his wings to expressing his love for his Ponyville family, Spike has come a long way from the baby dragon sidekick he was in season 1.
However, Spike has always struck me as a throwaway side character. His being a part of the series was only to help enhance the ponies' character development while being comic relief if a serious scene needed a bit of a distraction. I never would have imagined he would become pivotal to any plot beyond being a supporting role.
What is Spike's real purpose in My Little Pony, and what kind of future can he look forward to in season 9? All this and more after the break.

Like all of the characters on the show Spike has gone through many changes, the most recent being his growth of wings which has added a whole new dynamic as well as look to the ever faithful assistant.
As we approach season 9 what do you think lies in Spike's future? Do you like his new wings and how they were introduced or do you think they should have done it differently or strayed from them altogether? What sort of episodes or roles do you want to see Spike play next season?

It's that time of year when we give Spike, the ever lovable dragon assistant, friend and all around great guy a great big hug. Pinkie here wanted to be the first to help kick things off but it's thanks to all of you guys that today we can continue giving Spike some love the whole day through.
