I know, I suggested getting a pony name first, but they're pretty excited about that. Not sure why. All of the ponies in this town are crazy."

I suppose it's obvious that I didn't care for it at all when I read it, then. XD But I'm infamously hard to please when it comes to both comedy fics and HiE, so I suppose I'm probably the wrong person to judge. In any case, everything's got at least one person who just doesn't get it.

@Aquaman52 I don't think people like it for the HIE aspects. People like it for the plot twists and the parts of the story that leave you just staring at a wall and thinking "That just happened. Oh god, that means.... ffffuuuuuu..."
ReplyDeleteDoes take a while to get into. First few chapters are very comedic and pretty HIE focused. Later on the HIE aspects are pushed to the side due to potent story elements.
But I can see why people don't like the style. It's different than most.

ReplyDeleteThe problem for me was more that I read the first chapter when it was in the pre-reading queue and, to be honest, only finished it out of a sense of duty to write a complete review. I found it painfully unfunny, shoddily characterized, and so dependent on hoof-waving that it stopped seeming like an intentional subversion of nonsensical plot elements and started seeming a lot more like lazy writing. I haven't read any farther since because, quite frankly, I had no desire to. Chaotic humor--as in, the kind I identified the first chapter of TtEoAP featuring--works beautifully in some instances, but one of the places where it rarely, if ever, works is prose.
At the end of the day, it didn't hook me in the slightest, and my personal definition of a six-star or even five-star story hinges a great deal of my being interested enough in the narrative to keep reading after Chapter 1. Bad hook = no incentive to continue = not a good story, IMO.
@Aquaman52 I'm not sure if he changed anything between when you read it and when it was finalized, but I quite liked the first chapter, and got hooked after reading the second one. I collapsed on the floor laughing at some parts earlier on in the series, but started getting more and more into the story at hand as it developed and keep coming back to find out the next neigh-unpredictable plot twist. Some might call it blasphemous, but I found it to be rather reminiscent of Douglas Adams' brand of humor in its fish-out-of-water, strategically snarky, and mental-rebound-inducing style, while gradually slipping into a more serious tone without sacrificing a balanced dose of witty humor. If you read through some of the comments, you'd see why people love it so much. The mane six are in-character, the OC's have real character depth and balance themselves (even the self-insert protagonist), and the plot is genuinely unpredictable, yet perfectly logical and easy enough to follow.
ReplyDeleteBut while I find it hard to really accept your opinion on the grounds that I disagree wholeheartedly, I do agree that, like MLP:FiM itself, the story is not likely to please everybody. But some have at least given to reading a few chapters before putting it down for good, and that's all we could really ask for.
