• Update on Legends of Equestria Cyberattack - Remember to Change Passwords!

Legends of Equestria has released an update on the cyberattack they suffered some time ago that concerns what the hackers were possibly after as well as a how this might affect the release date of the game.

Apparently hackers were concerned with going after staff member's information in an attempt to access game files. While obtaining information from general users was not likely their aim it was still readily available to them.

They once again strongly suggest that you change passwords that you might have used on your LoE account that you also commonly use elsewhere!

On July 5, Legends of Equestria suffered a cyberattack that compromised a key database in our system, and allowed the attacker to access records such as usernames, email addresses, and password hashes for all accounts registered with us.

From what we’ve been able to gather, it does not appear that the attacker’s aim was to collect personal information from the accounts of all players. Instead, members of our team were specifically targeted, in order to use their information to attempt to gain access to game project files.

Although at this stage we do not believe that gathering general user information from our audience was the attacker’s aim, the fact remains that this information was available to them. Sensitive data was protected (e.g. salted and hashed), but simpler information, such as passwords containing no mixed symbols and common words/phrases, could have been brute-forced. This means that the attacker would potentially be able to access any account using that same email and password combination on any other website or service.

For this reason, we once again strongly recommend that anyone who has ever created a Legends of Equestria account — to post on our forum, or to play the game during one of our open events — immediately changes their passwords on any website or service that may have had the same password as the one they used with LoE.
We are continuing to investigate this issue, and are taking the necessary precautions to prevent anything like this happening again. Because of these efforts, we do not anticipate having our forum available for public use again until the end of July, to ensure that we can maintain the safety of everyone in the future.

We do not yet know whether this attack will delay development of the game past our intended Open Access Release date of August 19; we are still working hard on the project, but have lost valuable development time because of this attack. As soon as we have a better idea of whether this will cause us to push back that release date, we will let everyone know.

We can only apologise for this security breach, and promise you all that we are working hard and taking all necessary steps to prevent anything like this from happening again. We are still committed to bringing you the best possible experience of the world of Equestria that we’ve built, and we hope that you will be patient and understanding as we deal with this issue.
