• BronyCon to Welcome Non-Pony Programming at BronyCon 2017

BronyCon, the largest pony convention in the fandom has a big announcement tonight. It's been floating around the net for the past day or two that this change was in the works but now we have official confirmation that BronyCon will be adding a small amount of non-pony programming to this year's event.

Check on after the break for their full press release and the details they put on their blog.

BronyCon is proud to announce an exciting new development in the convention’s history. Beginning in 2017, BronyCon will allow a small amount of non-pony related programming during the convention.

Though programming focused on “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” remains the priority of the annual event, BronyCon believes that the inclusion of non-pony programming and events will enrich both the convention and the community. More details on what will be introduced will be released in the coming months.

    Blog Post:

When BronyCon started six years ago, it was an oddity—an opportunity for unlikely fans to get together and unabashedly celebrate something they loved. Since then we’ve grown, but the heart of our event has never changed.
Every year since, thousands of friends have come together. Pastel horses are how so many of us have met, but we have built lasting friendships that span much more.
BronyCon is, first and foremost, a My Little Pony convention. It’s a fact our staff, our guests, our vendors, our musicians and everyone else who attend it are passionate about. We’ve always strived to be of the fandom, by the fandom and for the fandom.
That said our staff has always actively tried to stay on the cutting edge. Trying new things leads to the innovation that keeps BronyCon fresh for returning attendees and makes it the incredible experience that it is for newcomers.

It is with that in mind that we are trying something a little new this year. Like some of our previous experiments we fully expect that it may be polarizing, but we’d like to think we’ve established enough trust that you will hear us out. The success of it will pivot on the community after all.
This year, BronyCon is going to invite a little bit of non-pony under our roof. Think along the lines of a beefed up gaming area and some new, additional programming. To reiterate, pony is still priority number one.

Non-pony is already a huge part of the rich tapestry of BronyCon. Every year brings more gaming cosplays, more Steven Universe EPs, more Undertale art in the marketplace and more totally out there meme-ry. It’s clear that this fandom thrives on more than just miniature equines and “20% cooler” jokes. What brings us together may be ponies, but what keeps us together is the complex net we’ve woven with one another.

At the same time, we won’t skirt it—there’s a lot of My Little Pony conventions out there. Yes, BronyCon is the largest, but you can’t depend solely on a legacy to drive interest in an event. For BronyCon to continue to lead, it needs to leverage new ideas to stay out front. This is a way for us to add value for everyone, not to reduce the pony. A lot of you sacrifice other cons to attend BronyCon. This is a way of bringing some of the things that you might miss at another event right to you. Plus, think of how much easier it will be to finally drag that stubborn friend along! ADDED BONUS.
Furthermore, the fandom has long thrived upon and celebrated those who create content within our community. Many people have used their creativity inspired by My Little Pony to go on and begin pursuit of their own careers in art and animation. By allowing a little extra content to be at BronyCon, this provides the opportunity for content creators who have the same source of inspiration as all of us to be more free with the content they produce and bring in fresh ideas that have not been seen within the pony fandom before.
All that leaves is the question of what we are adding. Well, the thing that makes the brony community so unique is the fact that it has brought together people of all ages and walks of life over a single show. As the show we’ve loved is even titled, “Friendship is Magic.” Our staff are targeting things that share that same spirit—geeky shows and games that have a way of uniting all sorts of different folks. After all, isn’t that what fandom is all about?

Your input is very valuable to us. After all, this convention is for you. As always feel free to throw any questions, of which we are sure there are many, to info@bronycon.org or contact us on social media. We will do our best to answer them.

Keep your eyes on our social media in the coming weeks as we start to announce more details. We hope everyone is as excited about this as our staff! Thanks for your continuing confidence in what we do. At the end of the day, it’s all for you.
