Maybe a more challenging game for sapient ponies would involve 2 buttons per hoof, plus two middle ones. But i can't figure out how to put all that info on a neat interface.

Only if the machine doesn't have a level that has simultaneous 4 panel pressing is it a cheating to have 4 legs.

If I remember, there is it a double mode, where you use two pads at once. That seems like it would be a little more fair.

The screens seem to only feature 4 scrolling symbols, suggesting that the pads only have 4 real buttons while the other 5 are fakes. Unless of course different songs use different symbol configurations, or maybe the line-up can even change mid-song for extra challenging play.

Humans have four limbs too... And you have to use them to play DDR really well.

And besides, double the legs requires double the coordination that Twilight lacks.
Also, Rainbow has SIX limbs; that's gotta be an advantage.

why would the other 5 be fake? There are 4 symbols on the screen on 4 symbols on the ground, it probably just means you can use your left or your right back leg to press the rat symbol.

      *Puts on serious hat*

Depends on several factors. If Pony limbs are considered very loose, then they would be at a massive advantage. However original Dance Dance Revolution is designed to be played with 2 legs that have enough space to shuffle in 4 directions.

If it's considered that pony limbs aren't as flexible (and let's not forget that ponies have legs that aren't perfect to play on a 4 sided dance pad), they would be forced to either use their back legs or forward.

Ideally then this would mean they would use their forward legs. Fortunately for them this is definitely much better, considering if said pony can press down with their forward hooves if, lets say they're sitting forward (so they can balance themselves. Standing and playing only with your forward hooves would cause too much imbalance if they're playing 10 difficulty heavy mode songs (lolmax300).

      *Takes of serious cap*

It ain't cheatin' unless it's a Pony vs Human! But the true victor is the one with stamina and agility!

Can't be arsed to write much, but I've played dance games for five years and participated in Finnish Championships, so I'ma just reply to some points brought up.

"Well, no one said we couldn't use our hands..."

It's different - ponies have four more or less equivalent limbs, whereas we have two legs and two arms. There's a reason for why we play these games upright.

      "You'll still fail MAX 300"

Ah, nostalgia... This is the kinda stuff it's all about these days: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9CpWJQXe0A

"Maybe a more challenging game for sapient ponies would involve 2 buttons per hoof, plus two middle ones. But i can't figure out how to put all that info on a neat interface."

This. More buttons would be harder to read, especially if they are in close "vertical" proximity (multiple buttons in a line). However...

"If I remember, there is it a double mode, where you use two pads at once. That seems like it would be a little more fair."

Yep! That would work quite well otherwise, but the panels are spread too wide, especially for the less eloquent limbs of a pony. The five-panel game Pump It Up fares a little better with its corners-and-middle approach.

      "[what Monsta said]"

Front limbs are already represented by other rhythm games, for example Pop'n'Music. Dance games should concentrate on either back legs or all of 'em.

My conclusion? WHO CARES! IT'S A COOL PIC!

Even if there are only four, look closely at what Twilight is doing. A pony's legs are not in a perfect square. They are in a rectangle that is longer than it is wide. For Twilight to press up+left, she has to use her front right leg and her back left leg. It seems like it would be confusing and very awkward.

If the arrows were diagonal and in the exact same positions as their hooves, then yes, it would be cheating. Otherwise, nope.

And let's not forget the mines in ITG. They MUST take their legs OFF those panels, or KABOOM.

9 panels is an actual game. Technomotion. It came out in Korea briefly back in the late 90's early 2000's. Two player mode will only let you play either 4 or 5 panel play. Single player, you can do 4/5 singles, 4/5 doubles, or full 9 panel singles. And yes, the 9 panel setting takes up the entire bar at the top.

To address a comment someone else made, Pump it Up doubles can be done with two feet. I can play up to lvl 11 songs on doubles (which is close to entry level Crazy/Maniac/Heavy modes for us older players (I've been playing Pump since '98 and DDR since '97)). I've seen people play lvl 19 doubles before, and it is insane!! Anywho, that's my two bits. I'm all for ponies on dance machines!!
