  • Seeds of Kindness Gearing Up: Help Out Today!

    by Phoe

    Bronies for Good has been hard at work in the garden, tending to the seeds planted by one of the greatest communities on the internet. Soon, those seeds will sprout, and grow into even more amazing things than we've seen before. I urge you to visit their website and find out what's going on.

    Project: Seeds of Kindness is Bronies for Good's latest charity drive, which is seeking to fund a clinic in Uganda and a green village in Burundi. What this means is that the money we'll be donating will help put together a self sustaining source of medical care for people who desperately need it, and a place where children can grow up and learn to provide for themselves without having to resort to crime. I would call these very very worthy goals, how about you?

    With the actual charity still a few weeks away,  BfG is looking for help to develop an incentive package that will help this drive match Smile! in success and scope (and remember, Smile! earned 26,000 dollars to help kids with cancer). If you're a musician, hit up My Little Remix and join in on the fun of creating a new album. If you're an artist, get those pens to paper (or tablet!) and make some wonderful images to show people what a great job they're doing. If you've got a spare game or an idea or anything at all to help out, I implore you to visit the link above and get into contact with these people. It's going to be worth your time, I promise.

      It always amazes me how much good can come from a television series. It may be for children, but I think it's safe to say that it's improving the lives of kids and adults. It's certainly made my life better. Now we have a chance to make someone else's life better, and I'm going to jump at that chance. I don't really have enough talent to contribute any art or anything, but I'll be more than happy to give once they start accepting donations. And I hope you all are too.

      Then open up your wallet and plunk a few dollars to the cause when the time comes for it. If you don't have any money, then just spread the word. You don't have to be super talented to help out...

      Charity is nice and all, but I question its effectiveness these days. I've seen too many things like this:

      http://www.ted.com/talks/david_damberger_what_happens_when_an_ngo_admits_failure.html

      The Brony community should make Kiva accounts instead. I trust the cost-effectiveness of Kiva.

      Thanks, everypony, for your comments and support!

      @Mike

      The two projects that are the beneficiaries of the fundraiser are projects selected by the nonprofit Your Siblings (I’m the second chair). You can find more information on our strategy in the FAQ on our website.

      When Lisa Wiese founded Your Siblings, she was acutely aware of such problems as Engineers Without Borders encountered, and avoiding them from the outset was crucial.

      Several of the central tenets of our work are to ensure that the projects we support are in no way dependent on outside help (e.g., outside maintenance) after the initial financial impetus we provide. They need to present a proposal how they can be completely self-sustainable in the long-term, and need to be run by locals, not by foreign organizations or volunteers.

      There are also detailed descriptions of the clinic and the Green Village on our website.

      Oh! Looks like I was gravely mistaken. These programs look excellently organized and well thought-out!

      Perhaps I will donate to this cause after all. Glad to know sustainability and other factors are considered.

      ...However, couldn't political turmoil in Burundi potentially interfere with the execution of the Green Village plan?

      Thank you. Unfortunately, political turmoil (and civil war in particular) is a major reason why so many children have lost their parents and are in need of such projects as the Green Village. The village itself is located in the province of Gitega but 7.5 miles outside the eponymous city (where the organization Green Life is based), which should, at least geographically, take it well outside any firing line. In the current political situation, however, I think the primary challenge is to rebuild the country.
