  • Daring Do Sidescroller

    by Cereal Velocity

I think Seth's love for Daring Do is rubbing off on me.

Tonight I have for you a sidescrolling game featuring Rainbow Dash's favorite heroine, and lemme tell you, it is really pretty. This first version may only be a small sample level for framerate testing purposes, but the visuals are far and above what we usually see from these games. Check it out below!

Is this inspired by Luna game?
Or is it an actual side-scroller?

Well, it already looks great for a first test level. That's more than half the battle at this point in videogame historical development. Now they just need to make sure it plays well. Not a fan of the Mario mechanic, don't think it works well to see Daring Do jumping to knock out enemies. Maybe a rudimentary weapon system, something Contra-style would be fun to see.
Like I said, this is very early stage stuff, so it'll be fun to see how it develops.

It looks really good and the music is nice.
I was disappointed that Darin Do couldn't fly, but I guess that was the point, like in the actual episode.

Wow that was pretty awesome! I'm used to most of these fan flash games being a bit on the simple side but this one is shaping up to be so much more. Can't wait to see it finished!

      That was an awesome demo.

It reminded me of BRAID, because of the graphics and the animation style. I can't wait to see more, and other possible gameplay mechanics. Possibly some flying or soaring mechanic.

As do I, built within just the past couple of months with SLi and everything, but this still frequently dips down to about 16 FPS for no apparent reason for me.

Awesome graphics and music! There are still some things that need work, like animation and enemies backsides hitbox, but for a technical demo it is very impressive. Can't wait for final game.

~32 fps on a quad core Mac Pro.

Guys no need to boast about your rigs, it's a FLASH game so it makes terribly inefficient use of better graphics cards.

If it was made in a compiled language, it would run on the cheapest thing Dell made from 1998.

Looks pretty impressive so far! I especially like how Daring Do pulls herself up if she jumps into a corner of a ledge, or accidentally runs off a ledge and quickly runs back. Very nice little touch.

However, if you do that and press the jump key exactly as she starts to pull herself up, she does some sort of super jump, much higher than normal. I was actually able to jump over the far right wall of the level. If you have upward velocity as you super jump (as opposed to falling), then you'll go even higher. You can also super jump when bouncing off of enemies.

Wow, the art work is amazing! I love games that appear hand-drawn like that. Even if the game play is very simple at this point, it's very nice to look at, and that's always a plus.

So, this seems appropriate to post here. I just uploaded a lot of my previous graphics tech. Still looking for willing game designers and artists to make a pony-based game:

      @Derpy Hands

Games ideally remain unoptimized until they're almost finished, so always expect games early in development to be semi-slow.

Also, these textures are very high res, so it's going to take a lot more power to render them... and Flash isn't exactly the ideal model of efficiency.
