This is a pretty good story. I really like the relationship between Savvy and Discord; for such different personalities, they have some great chemistry, and it's really fun to see her constantly having to keep him in line. I really enjoyed Heavenly Turmoil, and seeing as how you're the same author I'll have to keep an eye on this fic.

ReplyDeleteWell, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't the reason. I had been talking with one of my prereaders about how I needed a picture of Screwball and Discord, and he immediately sent me the doctored version that's up there.
I asked him where he got the original, and he linked me to your page, and I gave full credit to you at the top of the Prologue. (Though, in retrospect, I should definitely have included a link to your profile, which I'll put in right now.)
I hope that this hasn't caused any problem for you, and I'd be fine to change it if you would ask.
Do I need to read Heavenly Turmoil to read this? I'm not really much of a reader, but this looks interesting.

This needs more readers. I'll admit that when I first read the description, I was skeptical and put it off, but after reading it...
ReplyDeleteOh yes, this is legitimately a good story and an interesting take on Discord. Seeing a Discord before he realizes his true nature as the Spirit of Chaos and Disharmony is a very interesting concept.
Just read the second chapter, I find it a bit odd that this is supposed to be set over a thousand years ago, yet Manehatten doesn't seem to be any different from the present, but it doesn't really matter, I'm still enjoying this fic. I loved the development of the warm and cold feelings Discord's getting, and the reveal of Savoir's cutie mark.

ReplyDelete*chuckles* More than simple enough for my will to conquer. The spirits are the very essence of one-dimensional beings! Throw them off balance at all and their minds can't adapt! Even Discord has a weakness, a great one I can exploit. It was easy to spot in his encounter with Fluttershy.
Discord may seem like one of us to the untrained eye, but really, he's an infantile buffoon and his powers really aren't anything to speak of.
Yes, I'll be ruling that universe soon enough. It'll amuse me for a few millenia, I suppose. If you'll excuse me... *disappears with a flash, one of the Q*

I have to say, this was likely the most entertaining update yet. And we finally saw some cotton candy.
ReplyDeleteBlech, a misstep in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteDon't get me wrong, Discord being Discord is entertaining, but...nothing really HAPPENS in chapter 10. It can be summed up as "For twenty years, Discord screwed around with the world", and though it's not easy to imagine, it doesn't push the story anywhere. There's not even a hint of the impeding resolution that would have made slogging through all the other foiled attempts worth slogging through, nor do we see what happened to any of the other characters that have been here so far. Most of us knows what Discord does; why does this chapter exist, then?

ReplyDeleteThat's a very fair question. There's two reasons, really.
The first reason is that the story was originally tagged with Comedy, but the prereader insisted I remove it. I still treat it to have some comedic elements to it, but these last chapters have been just a double helping of dark and upsetting. So, like I did with the circus chapter, this was meant to be a sort of happy break from the gloom that's been chasing the story for the last few chapters. Plus I'd been dying to write an in-character Discord again ever since "Heavenly Turmoil," so I wanted to give myself this chance.
The second reason is, just like with the circus, there are details from this chapter that are going to come back into play in the next two chapters. Specifically, how Discord acts in his world (as more of an oppressive prankster than actually a tyrannical bastard), how he treats his subjects (the last bit is especially significant for multiple reasons), and the absolute absence and forgetting of the other characters, which was Screwball's fear come to life.
There's nothing in this chapter yet that would imply any sort of foreshadowing or building to anything on its own, I completely agree with you on that, I even had a feeling that this was going to be interpreted as filler when I was planning it way back during the Prologue.
But I have the unfair advantage of knowing what's going to happen in the story, so I'll just say that while this chapter was mostly fun and games with dopey Discord, the chapter is also planting the seeds for future problems that carry us closer to the resolution. You have my word that the rest of the chapters are going to carry the story to its conclusion in a much more overt manner.
