Description: There was nothing left for Spitfire in Cloudsdale, just an uncle who hated her and painful memories of lost loved ones. The Pegasus Search and Rescue Corps offers her a chance to get out of town, see the world, do some good - and one day maybe have a shot at the Guards or the Wonderbolts! She jumps at the opportunity - and six days later, she limps into training camp.
Doesn't matter: she made it. The world can beat her down, but it can't keep her down. The friendships she forms here will get her through everything training has to offer. Will they also see her through the dark clouds on the horizon?

ReplyDeleteI like the snark too, though I feel that we could have gotten a bit more of Spitfire's thoughts on why she was snarking. I'm going to have to wait and see how it progresses before I can say whether it's four or five star though.

ReplyDeleteYeah, it feels short to me, too. This was the only good break point before we meet the rest of the team, and that scene is huge and still growing - in fact, it's currently too long. Needs trimming. Not ready for primetime. And I really want to get it right, because ultimately the quality of the whole story will depend on how well I handle these four characters and that begins with first impressions.
This is great. I gotta watch this one. It's pretty easy and interesting to read, and SpitFire one of my fave ponies^_^
ReplyDeleteSurprisingly well-written and engaging for a character than I normally dismiss out of hand. Agreed that it felt short, but part of that is just for wanting to read more. I'll be keeping an eye out for updates on this one.

I aim to add as much humor to it as it can handle without sacrificing tone or quality. That said, I would prefer that it not get a comedy tag. The humor is subordinate to the story, and it's there because real life is humorous. everypony uses humor to bond, to cope, to entertain. These ponies will do their best to make each other smile. Sometimes just for fun, sometimes to drive away the tears. Sometimes, hijinks will ensue. I happen to think that the early draft of chapter 2 is the funniest thing I've written to date, but I still don't think of it as comedy.

ReplyDelete@ Rookie, as a matter of fact, the first piece of long-form fiction I ever wrote with any intention of showing to anyone was a terrible, awful, dreadful piece featuring emo-Soarin' lamenting the good ol' days and then, as a pre-reader put it, "making googlie eyes at the mane six."

@Mysecsha Wow, authors like you are seriously making it tough for me to hold to my 'write no fanfiction whatsoever' vow. Authors, how do they work?
ReplyDeleteI have to say, I am liking the hell out of this story so far. The dogfight (or is it ponyfight in this case?) at the beginning really had me glued to the screen, and the humor is tastefully done without detracting from the focus of the story. I'll definitely attempt to keep up with this one, especially since, (like others have said) there seems to be a lack of awesome Spitfire fics or fics featuring Spitfire in a leading role.

Wow. Is this the only chapter of it so far? I'm sorry to hear if that's true, because this was pretty damn funny. Usually you don't catch me laughing or crying while reading stories, but the "fetish torture suit" comment made me chuckle for a while after reading it. I'm very excited to see where this will go, it's got good humor. Like someone else said, if you go in the direction I think you're going this will definitely need a [Comedy] tag.

Loved chapter 2. Only confusing part was when you used Red's name/handle before she had actually introduced herself. That was a bit confusing, but nothing too bad.

ReplyDeleteHhm... It's good but I think Spitfire's personality comes off as a bit bland, it lacks the laid back personality that she showed in 'The Best Night Ever'.
ReplyDeleteSpecter, part of that is intentional. Laid back and happy is the destination. If it's also the starting point, this'll be a short trip.

ReplyDeleteI agree with the unkown. This fic has probably pulled me in faster than any other fic. Or, well, for those characters I don't really care for. You took characters I don't really care about and gave them a feel that I love. Thank you for that And take your time to get it right. It may kill me now, but if it comes out rushed, I will be dead and disappointed.

Hi all! In addition to chapter 6, I posted a dramatis personae here.
ReplyDeleteOn to less-fun news: the mobile version of chapter 6 is accidentally footnoted from hell to breakfast. I don't know why, since there aren't any comments. I'll try to get to the bottom of it.
On a paranoid note, gdocs says chapter 5 was last modified by an unknown user, but there isn't a new comment... hmmmmmmmm....
Oh well. If problems persist I may have to turn off comments in gdocs. There's always this post, FIM, and my gmail as avenues for feedback.

ReplyDeleteSo... ok, there goes "sleep" tonight. Just caught this story, and let me just say it deserves it's 6-star rating. I would pay money to buy this book. Even though I'm not usually one to WonderShip (I'm normally a SoarinDash guy), this one has me leaning in that direction now. This is one of the greatest compliments I know, please take it as such.
