  • CBC Radio Pony Report

    by Sethisto
The Q radio show on CBC in Canada recently did a short report on our little phenomenon here.  On top of interviewing someone from Wired, they also asked me a few questions.  Overall it does a good job of keeping things neutral, and staying informative, and avoiding the bias we usually see in these.

If you want to listen in on it, check it out here!

Obviously they have to play the theme of MLP and talk about "brushable manes". Nevertheless it is far beyond the average shit that is written/talked about this "little phenomenon".

I like the Neo-Sincerity tag. I think it fits us well. I was off 4-chan when all this started, but I think that's behind us now. Most of us came sometime afterwards. We came here. THIS WEBSITE!!! I sure am glad we have a great group of people running this site, which is the backbone for our community. Thank you. Great listen. SCOOTALOO is best pony.

Thank God they had no idea about cloppers and Rule 34. This interview would be so much less neutral. As a Canadian, I'd hate for my parents or people I know that bronies do that kind of thing, as they might actually start thinking I/many bronies are into it...

Yeah... R34 ruins everything. I like to keep my MLP mostly pure, because it just is on its own.

Still, the lack of the assumption that those things are dominant is a MAJOR step forward for a media outlet. Maybe we should send this to Faux News as an example of how to truly not be biased.

      Indeed.
But while I completely agree, I highly suggest we try our best to avoid being vocal about saying R34 ruins it. I'm of the same opinion as you on that matter, but every last time someone mentions anything positive or negative about Rule 34, clopping, or Pinkie Keen, Twilight goes all rapidash on us and starts a flamewar.
My fault for bringing it up, of course, but I'm just suggesting :P

That was a surprisingly really good segment on bronies. That radio station was being honest in their observations and we came across really well. Instead of trying to make us look like social deviants, choosing quotes to make us look bad, and using inflammatory language they decided to actually do their research before making judgements and gave honest opinions and facts. Well done, radio station. Well done.

Yeah, I see that. But this isn't my first fandom I've been around or in, and I just love how the MLP fandom is based so much more around creativity and appreciation, and less around perversion and edginess than SOME OTHER ONES (*cough*furries*cough* yes, i was all into it in college...). And I think that's one of the biggest draws for me. It just seems so much healthier to me, and trust me, I've been there.

Yes. It's good they either didn't know about or simply didn't mention some of the darker areas of the community. lol Every community has those aspects in them. Especially ones found through online culture it seems. But it's good some news sources don't use that as their "hook" and look at the community and it's members from a more neutral and unbiased stance.

Not bad, but I really wish they would get someone who really knows more about how this and other shows are made as a reporter for once, as there are always so many gaps. Still a pretty good report though, although I don't think every brony is 'obsessed' with the show. Obsession and passion for something are pretty different.

Also, hate to contradict you Seth, but I think a TON of cartoons have great voice acting, and there are actually more good animated shows than some people seem to think.

Wow...that sounded pretty cynical. XD Seriously though, even if the reporting was bad (which it thankfully hasn't been that often), it's awesome to see our little fandom growing and spreading.

@Mr.Doctor Don't be silly. We all sang along to the theme song. It's who we are.

@Lardlad I noticed how Ms Vara really put the emphasis on the colon. There is no colon, even though I always put one in when I abbreviate MLP:FIM.

@Manajix I already sent him an email stating that there is important Canadian Content in the fandom, namely plushes made in the prairie provinces that go for several grand and NACP's For The New Luna Republic that really sparked the whole music scene here. You want the CBC to take notice? Hit them with Canadian content.

@Ponies!!! Whoa there! Easy! Their research consisted of reading Wired and phoning the person who wrote the article and phoning blog pony Seth. I think Wired did all the heavy lifting here.

@XTUX345 Is your dad up late? It's on again at 10pm tonight.

@Forderz Right on. Jian is cool. And as you said, the more email the Jian gets, the better. If you know of Canadian Content in the fandom, send it. The CBC needs Can Con.

@Daniel G Many times I've read blogs by people in the US stating that they go to the CBC for unbiased reporting and information.

And I see they do remember how to do objective reporting, (their television counter parts have been steadily getting biased up the wazoo over the past decade, but maybe their radio people are different, I don't listen to them that often).

      I'm not tech savvy either.

In today's episode of Q, which I've linked to here you will find the part where Jian reads a few reactions to the brony segment from minute 25 to minute 28. Advancing the player to minute 25 is a bit tricky, I had to drag the marker/gizmo/thingy/slider very carefully, I couldn't just yank it halfway down the slot and hope to hear anything.

GJ CBC, at least we've managed to get away from the "lazy/pedo" status and have moved to a regular fan group who doesn't hate.
One small word for a station
One giant leap for fanbase and ponykind

@Steven To be fair, just because you don't fit the description of a typical brony doesn't mean that description is wrong.
