Apparently Derpy Hooves isn't the only interesting thing buried in that Castle Creator game. This is a Luna someone found while plugging in random variables. Their theory was that this the Luna from Rarity's axed makeover scene, but she is lacking the wavy hair. Maybe it's from another episode? Who knows! This game is suddenly beyond intriguing. Go my minions, delve into its secrets!

ReplyDeleteYeah the wavy hair was added pretty late (there are a couple places you can see the old hair still, such as when she says "how many points do I recieve?") so this being her makeover seems extremely likely.

I'm also quite curious if it was designed before they decided to give Luna enchanted wavy hair like Celestia. It looks a lot like the hair she had when first separated from Nightmare Moon.)

I found this completely by accident. I partially misread the earlier post about Castle Creator, and somehow missed the link to the actual game itself. I clicked on the Derpy link though, and simply changed the name to Luna, since it was the first pony to come to mind after reading the mention of the CMC and Luna. So literally the first thing I found was a total hidden surprise.
After breaking out of the awesome pink-Luna-induced stupor, I loaded the game itself, and tracked the activity of all the resources it loaded via Safari's Activity window. I saw all of the other ponies it loads, but didn't I see attempt to load this file, so I rather doubt that it's in the game itself, though I could be wrong, as it might try to load it after the fact at some point. (Fun-fact: you can download individual assets by option-double-clicking them in this Activity window.)
I figured it had to be Rarity's outfit for Luna after Lauren Faust mentioning the scene, and because the naming scheme for all the halloween outfits were of the form MLP_CharH_.swf (where could be a name or abbreviation, like AJ, RD, Sweetiebelle, or Derpy). Other character art follows the same scheme without the H in the title, so MLP_Char_.swf shows other artwork for many characters. Oddly though, I don't recall ever seeing this version of Rarity MLP_Char_RA_03.swf. Perhaps even more oddly, out of the Cutie Mark Crusaders, why would they only post Sweetie Belle's halloween outfit and not the others?
It really beats me if there's anything else crazy up there, since directory listing is not allowed for this server, and the main swf only requests so much during the initial load. It may be worth poking around it a further to see if there are actually any easter eggs in the flash though.
Anyway, wow, Luna is so pink. I would have loved to see this actually happen in the episode if it were longer.

ReplyDeleteThere were so many rumors surrounding the Hidden Palace Zone level back in the day... It's surprising how complete the level was given that they ultimately removed it in the end. Genocide city however... I don't even know why they bothered making the level selectable from the beta debug menu.
It it weren't nearly 3AM, I'd be looking through these swf files more closely to see if there was anything odd about 'em. I will say however that these asset swfs are pretty remarkable when loaded into a copy of Flash if you have one.
I think that they changed her hair in the last moment, if you watch the episode again you'll find several scenes where she still has part of her old hair.

The concept art and even the asset creation for "Rarified Luna" would have to be done long before things got to the animation stage. So really, depending on the point at which the sequence was cut and the point at which the new hair was decided on, it's not surprising to see that this artwork exists.

ReplyDeleteAwesome find with the config file. It still doesn't list that hidden Luna image though. Did you check all the supporting swfs when you decompiled too?
My guess is that they had the game set up and ready to go for a while, and simply switched the config file when it was ready to go live. Probably at the last moment, they decided to pull the dressed up Luna from the game since it wasn't used in the episode, so they simply excluded the image from the config file, instead of removing it from the server completely. Finding it was a fluke, but I still wonder if there are other images up there hidden away.

ReplyDeleteGiven her makeover look I wonder if the way Luna was supposed to remove the costume was to do the classic "cartoon character rips off their entire outfit in one fluid motion, revealing an entirely different set of clothes (and often hair style) underneath." (I wish I had a video example) But as Lauren said part of it gets stuck in her teeth, Pinkie walks in, hilarity ensues.
