Maybe this sudden interest is thanks to our hostile takeover of Toys R' Us.com back when the full collectors set came out? We definitely emptied their stock a few times. Go pat yourselves on the back, bronies are now a worthwhile market!

ReplyDeleteI've been thinking for a while now that Hasbro could look at the fandom as a focus group, target audience, and viral marketing platform all in one. I think they've made a wise decision in opening up to social media, and seeking stronger tie-ins with the wildly successful show.
Granted, I'm pretty sure this is a leak, but it is not without precedent from Hasbro. Remember that app review Ceral did?

Incidentally, I have heard that blindbags have been found at JC Penney's in the US. As in, the actual "bag" blindbags, not the TRU style "you can see through the packaging" type sets.

The names the toy producers came up with don't tell anything. Daisy's blindbag name is "Flowerwishes", even though her name was said in the show.

Anyway. It's cool to see male ponies join the toy ranks. Though I highly doubt this is so much them catering to the older audience, as it is them simply making more toys to make more money in general. They're likely just using more models and known colors now to create more toys. Little kids will buy them. If the Bronies do too, then cool. It's also a good bet that many of them will have different names apart from their fanon ones of course. :P

ReplyDeleteI am constantly amazed and befuzzled by how much influence this fanbase is having on the show. I don't know whether that's a good thing, or not, but we're certainly catching Hasbro's eye.

They're watching us and we need to prove we aren't just more sex-starved perverts off the internet. Give them a good image and they'll be more ready to include us as real, intelligent viewers, not crazed fanboys.

Still nice to see Hasbro take an interest in us (maybe). Maybe they realized that with the right colors and names, they can appeal to both markets with little extra effort (and not have to 'officially' release something for Bronies, since they seem pretty hesitant on that). Now all they need to do is slip a Derpy and Trixie in that set, and they've basically got a license to print money.
I now have a goal, Get to the January BroNYcon. Like the Immortal saying, BroNYcon or bust.

There's been quite a few references to brony-related stuff in the last episode, not to mention all of these extra leaks about future eps and other fun stuffs. It would make a LOT of sense to use the fandom as you suggest. However, the hard part for a company like Hasbro is determining whether they can trust us. It IS a little kid's show, after all, and the last thing they need is a bunch of 4channers acting as a focus group. *shudder*
Granted, I think the majority of this fandom is not like that at all. All I'm saying is that it's hard to accept a bunch of 14-24-year-old males as a target audience for a show geared towards 4-10-year-old girls. You gotta imagine what the rest of the world is gonna think, and Hasbro could lose their reputation if things got out of hand.

ReplyDeleteI'm kind of disappointed they chose the Rarity figure for Berry Punch. Though when I made my custom I used one of the pegasus models and cut off their wings, so I guess they don't have that mold readily available.

ReplyDeleteWe feel it is worth mentioning that whilst viewing the pictures on the linked thread we noticed that in the second picture of the first posting, the group shot, the pony situated above Big Macintosh bares a strong resemblance to the good Mayor Mare of Ponyville. The fifth post of the same thread contains a more detailed picture. The lighting makes it difficult to be sure, but we feel confident the figure is intended to be her... despite also being misidentified as a unicorn. *facehoof*

@TDR - J.C. Penney Outlet Stores do have the first wave of blind bags, so that isn't a rumor. I don't have a JCP Outlet near me, but I bought some off of someone who does have one nearby. They're not in regular J.C. Penney stores, which I think is confusing some people.
