  • Pony References in Diablo 3 Secret Level

    by Sethisto
Someone on Reddit has leaked information from the MPQ Files of a Chinese client leaked US client for Diablo 3.  Apparently the "secret cow level" of this game is going to be a massive pony reference.  Some of these files are pretty amazing.

You can find all of the file names either at the page, or copy/pasted below!

(Thanks to LupusAlbus for the heads up/copy paste!)

"From the MPQ exploration of the Chinese site.
    A4_1000MonsterFight_Encounter_Name Boss: Battle For Ponies
A4_1000MonsterFight_Taunt_Text The battle for ponies is about to begin.
A4_1000MonsterFight_Join_Instruction {s1} is about to witness
A4_1000MonsterFight_Enter_Instruction You are about to witness
A4_1000MonsterFight_Info_Text The rest of your party will be able to teleport in once you enter
BridlePurpose_Encounter_Name The Pinnacle of Ponies Event
BridlePurpose_Join_Instruction {s1} is about to enter
BridlePurpose_Enter_Instruction You are about to enter
BridlePurpose_Info_Text The rest of your party will be able to teleport in once you enter
    • Ponies_HopePrison Hope's Prison
    • PoniesPurificationTimer Purification Timer
    • Bridle_Ponies Bridle
    • BridleRitual_Encounter_Name Cells of the Condemned Event
    • BridleRitual_Join_Instruction {s1} is about to enter
    • BridleRitual_Enter_Instruction You are about to enter
    • BridleRitual_Info_Text The rest of your party will be able to teleport in once you enter
    • Possibly this as well, given that dressage is a equestrian term:
    • Dressage_Encounter_Name Boss: The Larder
    • Dressage_Taunt_Text Defeat the demon Dressage!
    • Dressage_Join_Instruction {s1} is about to enter
    • Dressage_Enter_Instruction You are about to enter
    • Dressage_Info_Text The rest of your party will be able to teleport in once you enter
So it looks to be a timed event, possibly with the end boss being named The Larder, probably freeing ponies on your way.

How certain can we be that these aren't just translation errors?

Well.. A lot of them. And uncannily thematic ones?

Yeah okay I got nothing, I hope this is right, because it'd be awesome.

Color me doubtful. While I would find it humorous, and more than a little bit cool, if it was true... I simply don't trust it since it comes from a Chinese client. They have such lax copyright laws there, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the end result of somebody messing around with the code. It might even be just a giant scam.

If the leak had come Blizzard (straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak), I'd be more than willing to believe it. I'd even be comfortable if the leak came from Korea. But I just can't put my full faith in a leak from China.

with the crazyness that blizzard has done...and the random goofy tie ins(panda express even) this would NOT suprise me one bit..they tend to enjoy spoofing "in" things at the time of a game..you just have to look hard for them

and something tells me modding diablo3 into a pony form wouldnt be all that hard..god knows the level building(if the engine was user friendly) would be simple enuf

I included a link to the actual leaked MPQ files, guess that didn't make it here. http://wowbox.tw/d3/index.php

Of additional note is that one of Diablo's 4 IDs in the monsters section is MorganPony. Possibly a little developer in-joke?

To be fair, I can't verify if the leak is real myself or a huge, elaborate troll, and I did caution Sethisto of that.

Honestly, seeing pony references stuffed into a Blizzard game...this is...unbelievable.

I week ago I was fiddling with the idea if Blizz would ever put pony references into WoW or D3, but a second later I was "meh" and totally sure it will never happen.

Once again, I stand corrected, ponies pwn and take over everything.

Sidenote: I haven't read all the comments here, sorry if this has ben pointed out already, but I'm somewhat confident the secret level will be about slaughtering ponies, not saving them :-/

Well before MLP:FIM even aired, I remember complaints about there being a rainbow in the background of one of the levels, and that things were a bit too brightly colored. I find those complaints highly amusing now, for some reason. ;)

Also, knowing how Blizzard loves to stick pop culture references in its games willy nilly, I seriously wouldn't doubt that they'd do this. :)

Not only are the names clear references to FiM characters: Rainbow Western (Rainbow Dash), Midnight Sparkle (Twilight Sparkle), and Nightmarity (Rarity); but Midnight Sparkle seems associated with an attack (?) called "Nightmare is Magic" (Friendship is Magic), and Nightmarity has "Generosity in Death", both of which correspond to their special talents in the show.

So much for the Diablo 3 rainbow haters. Blizzard knew that friendship is magic before FiM even came out! So. Awesome!

Sorry, Blizzard. Your craftsmen are in another castle.

Now I'm not sure... I don't think they will have those names, though.

I wonder what Rainbow Western means? I would think it could be some kind of combination of AJ and Dash.
Anyways, I hope this is legit. Its the First FiM video game easter egg I have herd of.

I THINK the origin of this is the "Diablo III way too colorful" mess way back when the first in-game footage was released. They made a Pony Diablo III shirt for their employees for a convention some time later in mockery of the complaints.

If the secret level grew from that in-studio joke, then it predates Friendship of Magic - which doesn't mean, however, that there aren't some bronies running around in the studio who will take the opportunity to put some references in.

I'm a fan of the Diablo series and am pleased with the results of each release. This however is something I would not hold my breath on even in the least. There is a history about the secret cow lvl. Diablo back in 95-96 had word of a secret cow lvl that was just a lie. Blizzard heard of it and decided to put it in Diablo II by using Wirts leg and a tomb of Town Portal in the Horadric cube. You had to complete all 5 acts to get there, 4 if you don't have the expansion. The downside of the level was you could only go there once each difficulty. Don't use it, then save and exit, you'll waste that use. Just for those who haven't played yet.

@Wabefuhon - The cow level isn't single-use. The problem is that if the Cow King is killed (by you or someone in your party), you can't make another cow level in that difficulty. Most people get around this by having one character make the level, and then they leave and come back with another character and do a cow run with that. That, or they request that people don't kill the Cow King, and most people aren't douchey enough to disobey.

You know something? I think Diablo III is going to be even better than Diablo II: Lord of Destruction was... And Diablo II: LOD was one of the best games I've ever played. Blizzard, on the off chance that you are reading this, not only do you have my respect once again, I fucking WORSHIP you now if this news is true. You can have ALL of my money and a disproportionate amount of my free time now.

      TentacleHorse_B_Unique Nightmarity
      Unique_TentacleHorse_A Nightmare is Magic

I haven't seen any references to Pinkie Pie or Fluttershy in the data... I wonder if they plan to eventually include clones of Pinkie Pie or Fluttershy as fightable ponies? Oh well, guess we'll find out in due time... Provided this is actually real, which it BETTER be.

How long until we see the first MLP/ Diablo crossover fic?

In World of Warcraft there's a Boss called Bronjahm . There's also a quest chain in which you helps a Rambo expy to defeat an army of orcs or an NPC called Lieutenant Horatio Laine from the Stormwind Crime Investigators. So yes, Blizzard had done stuff like this in the past.

However, WoW was full of pop-culture references right from the start and that’s why it works. The Diablo series was always more serious and dark. Sure there was a cow level in the second game, but it was more a nod to a popular fan gag than anything else. A secret Warcraft or StarCraft level would work better than a pony level. In WoW, on the other hand, I wouldn’t mind a “Mad Six” boss fight.

Rainbow Western sounds like an AppleDash combo.

Heh. Rainbow Western. Brokeback Mountain. Heh. Just sort of fell into that one. Sorry guys.

Way I see it, a level where the ponies are the villains makes sense: it has the pony references that gets bronies excited, and it has the killing ponies that gets the Brony haters to not boycott the game for containing Ponies. Because let's face it, it's impossible for haters to ignore a pony level just because they don't like it. They'd hate it just for being there. Just like everything else Pony that they can't help but complain about despite them not having to pay any mind to it.
