  • PMV: Invaders Must Die

    by Sethisto
Once again, we are shown what editing software really can do when more than just scenes and lips syncs are used to make a video.

I'm seeing a pretty steady increase in stuff like this.   It looks like the overall PMV community has improved tremendously over the hiatus.  I can't wait to see what they produce once we start getting some new content to play with.

You can find this madness after the break!

      LOL Rarity!

Awesome choice of track and really great editing on this one. It's nice to see a PMV that goes beyond the already-exisiting-footage mashup and tries new things with VFX and filters.

Everything was synced perfectly to the tempo/beat and the randomality that ensues with the videos just fits in. It's hard to explain, but it simply does.

This is the kind of PMV that will get you listening to the music even if you're not a fan of the genre.

Am I the only one who thought this was just... really badly done? It's like the epitome of what makes a PMV bad, he just slapped on a ton of effects, made a crap ton of vectors fly everywhere to random music with no purpose other than being obnoxious and didn't go anywhere with it.

Unless of course that's the joke :\

While I do agree with what you're saying and I too enjoy a normal music video with a matching song more, the idea behind this is just how much editing magic was put into it. He picked a fast paced song so he could show more scenes fast and the whole thing was to show off his editing. I do think these skills could be used to make a great PMV to a song that matches, have scenes that match the song and have some of the overscreen effects too.

I didn't really want to comment, but since you've already done so, I'll come out and agree. To be honest, I'm a bit disappointed at the apparently implications in this post - I would wager that my last PMV required about as much effort as this video due to the very extensive lip syncing required, but because it had "just" lip syncing as opposed to a ton of flashy effects, it was just another video on the pile. I worry that this could lead to many more videos that favor an overuse of effects over meaningful content. :( I hope my worry is unfounded.

Element of Marshmallow* (fixed your spelling dear), indeed!

Anyway though, I'm inclined to agree with some others above in that it did feel a bit loud (for lack of a better term) and disjointed and gaudy in some aspects, though there's not necessarily anything wrong with that seeing as how that's probably what they were going for. But that having been said, it is certainly an impressive display or video editing skills.

I totally agree. I was very excited to watch this PMV, and all it seemed to be was a load of flashy effects and vectors thrown around. I enjoy the music, but I'd much prefer a video that does good lip syncing and meaning rather than FLASHY FLASHY SEIZURE TIME.

I thought the quick motion blurred transitions from scene to scene were nice, but the vectors flying about lacked the skill necessary to pull that sort of thing off. It was very basic motion tweening in after effects (I'm assuming AE, because I know AE can do everything in this video).

I also, personally, dislike the part at 2:03, with the video layers becoming a cube. I don't think it's a good idea to form it against a black background, it makes the viewer aware they are watching a video and disperses any immersion the video may create. Though I'm sure others may disagree.
Once the cube of video layers has formed with the Nightmare Moon segment, it works, but waiting for it to form is tedious, and as I said, immersion breaking. I get that there is a lull in the music, but I don't think it works.

It's not a bad PMV, it does have some merit, but Seth's post left me expecting more than this, to be honest. It's mostly the vectors that bring it down.

OMG! I made it to Equestria Daily! Thank you everybody for subbing to me! I made this video in Sony Vegas Pro 10 if anybody wants to know. It took about 2 weeks to finish and a total of 7 hours to render. At those who think the video is just vectors. It is. It's around 150 vectors moving independently throughout the entire video with a bunch of effects. If you want something better get my subs to 500.

This was a nice PMV, but was it really necessary to insult people who make other types of PMVs in the intro post? I don't want the fandom to go down this road where doing a video "this" way is the "right" way and doing it "that" way is regarded as lesser or lazy or something. (Sidenote: lip syncing videos is not easy, it's a giant pain in the ass to do well.)

Some of my favorites animated music videos are ones that, yes, "only" have lip syncing and scenes from the show.--the PonyCraft 2, the Weird Al videos, and the Watchmen trailer, for example. Also, what style a person uses depends on what they're going for. Dramatic effects are great for some songs that mimic music videos in style (like this one or that almost seizure-inducing G3 video of "I'm Still a Rock Star"), but would be completely inappropriate and jarring for other songs.

      ...

"If you want something better get my subs to 500"? Really? :/ Make videos because you like to and feel inspired, dude. Video editing is an art like any other, something that comes from the heart, not just a thing to be held hostage in order to get something you want. The true measure of a work of art is its heart, not outwardly impressive numbers.

No offense, man, but while this video is technically impressive, I can't shake the feeling that it's emotionally dead, and your post here and the statements it implicitly makes about the craft of video editing is basically doing everything it can to convince me NOT to subscribe to you.

(I'm not fooling myself into thinking that this is going to have much effect, considering that I know very well that this is exactly the kind of thing that the masses tend to eat up... but still, after reading this post I just couldn't stay silent.)

Gotta agree with the negative crowd here.

It just wasn't pleasing in the things I look for in a PMV.

For a minute I actually thought this was some sort of game or anime intro parody and that I just didn't know what it was myself. So in a way I'd call that a success for the creator.

Anyone who thinks that lip-sync videos are easy should try doing one sometime. It's a LOT harder than you'd think, but then, most crafts are easy if you're not the one actually doing them (and easier still if you have zero clue on how to do them).

Anyone who thinks that "one of every transition and overlay that my pirated copy of AfterEffects has" is "good" should take a film editing class sometime. Simple editing and transitions done correctly are absolutely superior to all flash and no skill. Hint hint: it's not the software, it's the person using it. You can do profesional-grade wonders with Movie Maker, ffmpeg, Virtual Dub, the Gimp, and Audacity if you know how to use those packages and the principles of video editing. CS5 will not save you if you don't.

And... don't diss the people who are sending in the submissions. That's just plain insulting and world-class stupid. ES's readers are here for the submissions, not the admin-snark, and being insulting is a good way to get people to not send submissions any more.

UGHH... Why does everyone hate on this for lack of lipsynching. The PMV does have lipsynching if any of you people payed attention. And though there was a lot of VFX they were implemented well enough and were timed almost perfectly.

It is nice, but it seems to overuse some content. It is not that there is filter overuse, but that it gets booring watching still pictures spin around that much. And I feel that there was too many of those nice screen transitions. They were getting worn out by the end of the video.
