  • Plasma Speaker Fluttershys

    by Sethisto
I have no clue if this is awesome or not, but there is totally electricity arcing around, which by default is cool, so I'm assuming it's something.  You can find it after the break!

For everyone else, have some Fluttershy.

Its not hard to build its a modulated tesla coil, You generate the high voltage spark and then modulate it via an amp.

Look up on youtube 'singing tesla coil' and the group 'arc attack'
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singing_Tesla_coil

Don't build one if you do not have experience in high voltage electronics.

Yes, the spark is turned on and off about a million times a second and the duty cycle of individual pulses is modulated to cause it to emit sound. They've got the gain up a bit high, so it's distorting.

      (The guy who made it)
Its a high voltage plasma arc that is modulated to about 29 thousand hertz, and then modulated further to the music I put into it.
Like with Lightning, the air is split when the arc forms, which creates sound waves.
So the arc being turned on and off at the frequency of the music makes sound.
      And you get Lighting Flootershy!

Actually, not that much Ozone is produces, ozone is produced when the plasma collapses, and seeing as it is a "continuous" arc, there isnt too much of that.

It took me 6 months of tweaking to get the circuit right, due to the abnormalities in ferrite cores and made in china electronics(...) it takes a lot of effort to get a working prototype.
But i do fully agree on the "dont build one if you havent got experience" part, i can set fire to almost anything with it...

Too bad the recording is poor, because this kind of speaker usually has an awesome quality.
... but don't try this at home if you don't know what you're doing. Seriously. I've set leather on fire with half this voltage (/intensity, Ohm law blah blah) once.

its playing all the notes, its just that because I dont have anything to remove the low frequencies, it has to play all the music at once, which plasma speakers arnt good for. So its either a rather scratchy everything or a crystal clear high-frequency tweeter with rather horrible whining for bass...

I saw a vid years ago that was a set of like 6 of them all setup for different frequency ranges. It sounds soo cool.

I have almost all the parts except the coil in my electronics play time stuff (i love working with micro-controllers). I've never been able to obtain good coils for high voltage stuff.

      Tesla coils require very precise electronics, try using a flyback transformer instead, here is a link to the circuit i based mine on;

Ask yourself, is dancing in lightning cool, or is Dancing in the middle of school to a pony song cool?
Ive tried both, and I tell you, the rush you get from the Ponies is about 20% more than when you have 250000 volts flowing through you...
      Id pick ponies.

Ahh well you see now, it takes 20miliamps across your heart to stop it. That arc is EASILY enough volts to get across your heart, but luckily it only runs at approx 10miliamps. So, all it would do, is burn you. And its fun!
