Remember "Bubbles"? That legendary sadfic that made many of you shed your first manly tears? The guy that runs the Mentally Abridged series did a live reading of it with full scene by scene colored sketches for some visual flair.

ReplyDeleteThere's also a much darker side to the story if you really think about the text and what's happening in the story (talking about the actual fic, not this video which happens to be a very poor depiction of the actual fic), when Derpy gets sick from the muffins her mother feeds her it is possible and likely that her mother tried to poison her.(that assumption can be made by previous actions of her mother in this fic)

ReplyDeleteYeah, I recommend reading the comments and seriously thinking about whether or not this obsession is actually worthwhile. I spent some time on Ponychan and started to see what I guess you could call the bowels of the fandom in some sections.
Sooner or later I'm going to be banished from here for writing so many "negative" comments. Love and toleration doesn't seem to work on "downers," from what I've heard.
Also, I didn't read the fic but watched the video. Couldn't take it seriously, probably because of the voice. If that was sarcasm regarding it being a "sadfic," then bravo to the Sethisto for tricking me into believing he was serious, lol.

ReplyDeleteThe story is actually REALLY dark/sad.
But, first of all, the team who made this did an abridged series full of dark humor.
Second, I think the joke is actually that Rainbow Dash doesn't even notice the undertones. In fact, she isn't even reading the story properly, like putting herself into the story suddenly, or replacing Derpy's parents with her own.
The fanfic is sad, but this reading is supposed to be hilarious.
Oh ya, and I deleted the message. Thought that might've been too much. I mean it was one of the top comments and yknow, that's too much attention.

I admit, the only fanfics I've taken the time to read were "Spiderses" (I haven't laughed as hard as i did reading that in a long time!) and the first bits of Fallout: Equestria. I'm waiting on the author to write more before I sink my teeth in any deeper into that story. Anyway, I've read so many poor quality fanfics that I'm usually staying away unless I see some particularly "outlandish praise" (Spiderses) or something with wide appeal that I can relate to (FO:E). So if this story is really that effective, well, I guess I'll give it a try. I've yet to see people talking about how well-written the story is, though.
This is part of why I will never read Cupcakes and i tell people who spam Cupcakes posts that it didn't really happen.

Disregard that bit I wrote earlier about not seeing people talking about the story being well-written... Perused the comments on the actual story and I found a few comments doing just that.

ReplyDeleteYou're waiting on FO:E to get longer before reading? Are you aware that as it stands now it is slightly longer than the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy? I can certainly understand waiting for it to finish though :D.
As for Bubbles, it is a spectacularly written one-shot. It's one of the fics on this site that I recommend most.

ReplyDeleteI didn't find Bubbles all that sad because little Derpy was oblivious to the situation, however I did feel anger and hatred towards derpy's mother.
ReplyDeleteThat was something. And that something was the opposite of what I was expecting. I just found this very amusing and funny.
ReplyDeleteI did read Bubbles long ago, which by the way was very pitiful and made me shed tears, but this went through a whole different kind of perspective and I loved it. Again, I was expecting of re-living the heart wrenching moment but instead I got something out of the ordinary.
Great show.
Because of this, I just went and read "Bubbles." Yeah, that was... argh, scuze me for a second... *Pulls it together* Yeah, good story. Sigh.

ReplyDeleteThis is awesome. Especially the improvisation with Rainbow Dash. I watched this right after reading the original fic and I have to admit that this is possibly the best medicine for the depression that "bubbles" leaves you in. Well Done!
