@wackypony Because indentation is primarily for clarifying paragraphs when they're pushed together, like in your standard novel format. When there's a space between every paragraph already, it offers no service.

@wackyponyTrue, but double spacing between paragraphs is not so much so, and thus for some people it is a case of one or the other. I know that personally I usualy dislike when a story uses both spaced and indented paragraphs.

Something like that would be pretty difficult to implement, and still exploitable. That's the problem with ratings of any type, they can all be bombed. Hell we raid polls all the time :p

Honestly we might not even need the system. Every story posted on EQD goes through the pre-readers, who are beyond selective. I'll look for an alternative though.

Every author gets boned by the rating system at some point. Either you write the wrong ship, or you write a sad/dark/grim fic, or you write about the wrong characters, or someone just happens to be trolling that day. The more stories I write, the less I care about the star rating system.

Commenters like BruteForceFTW are the ones I'm talking about, in case it wasn't clear.

      @Cold In Gardez

I have to agree. though, i think that Brute was just trying to think of something to say other than first. Personally, I'll either abstain from reading a fic or I'll read the first few lines if it isn't something i normally read(which is anything other than shipping), or a pairing i find to be... eh(like Twixie).

as for this story, I read the first 30 or so lines. It's okay, from what i can tell. I'd be more apt to read it if I didn't have homework and another long, popular fic looming over me.

You're not going to stop a dedicated vote bomber, but that's not what you're dealing with. It's just people who see content they don't agree with on the front page and give it a reactionary down vote. If that early window was gone, they'd ignore it and move on.

It's a shipfic, all shipfics get star bombed on EqD. At least for the last two months or so.
I watched a story get 20 1 stars in a row (mathematically, it could have been 19 1's and a 2) and drop from 4.7 to 3.7. In about 10 minutes. Same author had his other fic drop from 4.8 to 4.6 and gained 30 new votes that night.

I'm quite happy with EqD as a place to submit fanfics. The fact that its rating system isn't entirely perfect is no reason to abandon the ship.

On a side note, I'd like to apologize to the author of this particular fic for filling his story's comment string with completely unrelated discussion.

@Seth and the rest in this argument.

I really don't think we should abandon the rating system entirely; everything that gets on this site is good, but ratings can help us seperate the good from the Really good.

I've read interesting sounding stories from all genres, but let's face it, the 5 and 6 star ones are for the most part better than the rest.

Obviously, I have no bearing on the decision, but I think we need to remodel the rating system rather than remove it.

Gonna ignore Seth and continue discussing, but why don't pre-readers also assign a separate rating for the stories? That way you can balance user rating against the pre-readers rating and decide whether the story is worth your time.

Seems a simple enough solution to me.

This story doesn't seem complete. It never resolves a lot of stuff, like Trixie's trial or the curse, which aren't really things you can just leave up to the reader while achieving any form of closure. And a lot of stuff remains unexplained, like Celestia sending Luna away; was she really kicking her sister out of the castle or was she just influenced by the spell?

also, lol at everyone so busy gravely discussing how to rate fanfics that they apparently can't be bothered to read the fanfic about which they are gravely discussing rating

Now I'm a massive Twixie fan, massive but this I found barely readable at best. I'm leaving it unrated but as desperate as I am for more decent Twixie fics to stand up with Out in the Cold or Ballad of Twilight Sparkle I'm not going to rate a fic highly just because it had Twixie in it.

Let me make a clear, related comment:

The story is interesting (Twixie FTW), the events are fun to read, the formatting is fine, the end is open for interpretation or possible sequel, and it has The Great and Powerful Trixie being loved by all. Why are you not reading this? Five stars! Which technically it should be 6 stars, but since the limit is 5 stars, I'm going through an unnecessary run-on sentence to explain that I can only give 5 stars.

I mean... Seth rated it 5 stars. Last time I checked, once he approves something himself, it becomes immediately needed to be looked at. Since I've been here, he's never been wrong.

... I'm late to the party ,aren't I? Awesome story Earl! Truly inspired myself to write!

Of course she can visit her sister. I never said she was banned from Canterlot or anything. She just needs to reconnect with Equestria after one thousand years on the moon.

And for the people saying it feels incomplete, that's probably because I did plan a sequel, but I decided against it as this story isn't my personal headcanon and I decided to write another story which is.

To be honest, I really didn't enjoy this story. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind shipfics (I quite enjoy them, in fact) but there were just too many punctuation errors to overlook for me. The story also lacked the depth I was hoping for.

I'm normally one to enjoy long stories, but I honestly lost interest in this one long before it ended. If people say it will increase dramatically after the restaurant scene, perhaps I'll pick it up again, but... for now, no.

i kind of lost interest as well. I think the story needs more foreshadowing. Give us more hints that something interesting is about to happen, force us to continue reading on.

I was a little confused from the first to middle bits of the story. I didn’t really get what’s going on, because a lot is left unexplained till much, much later in the story i guess.
Why does the spell work on the Princesses? These are goddesses of the Sun and Moon. And they are deceived by an old spell? I find this hard to believe. Anyway, if that is the case, then surely such a powerful spell should be like... locked up with a lot of security? After that, Celestia quickly dismisses Luna. I don’t think Celestia would ever do that. We’ve seen how much she loves her sister and cares about her feelings. I’m assuming this is part of the effects from the spell. I’m not very sure about this because it wasn’t explicitly explained in the story. (until later)
Later, Twilight somehow feels attracted to Trixie. Is this from the spell too? If so, why doesn’t everyone else get attracted as well? And why does Trixie like Twilight?

I’m sure all this would have been cleared up by the end. Only because I read the page of spoilers. Judging from that, it’s quite a decent plot. But while I was actually reading the first half of the story, I didn’t like it.

It's a shame that this story ended on such a blatant sequel hook with so many (fairly important, no less) bits unresolved, because once it got past the slow-burn that it had in the start it really became an enjoyable read.

I lost interest at the restaurant scene. Twixie shipping out of nowhere (at least on Trixie's part), and it's written more like a script than a story -- just a long list of quotes and actions, without any hint of what's going on inside Trixie's head. Booored.

This fic was star-bombed, so let me explain why I gave it a low rating.

There's no feeling of character development for Trixie. It's as if she was just replaced by a nicer pony at some point of the story.
Poor Luna was sent away from Canterlot and her night was taken away from her based on a word of a pony her sister met for the first time in her life. After the mess is over Celestia did not change her decision like it was the right thing to do. WTF?
The consequences of Trixie's actions are not explored. The court is mentioned, but is never shown.
The fic has no ending, text just abruptly ends at some point.

I love Twixie, but cannot rate this story higher than 2/5.

I found this fic to be rather lacking, both in 'what's going on in Trixie's head' and in explaining what's going on. Twixie shipping was a bit out of nowhere, it never got explained when it crossed the line between the spell's mind-control and genuine affection. And the abrupt ending is a big deal. This was some juicy material you skipped on, the fallout of the spell.

All the same, a nice effort, and thank you for sharing :-)
