A is the average flavored variety of pinecone.
B grade is not crunchy and tastes horribly to some, but to others it's an acquired taste.
I thought they were discussing the EU countries.

ReplyDeleteRainbow Factory, Because fanfic writers hate rainbow dash and feel the need to torture her, make her a killer, ship her with everything, or write stories about her that will depress the entire brony community to the point of not being able to look at her without crying.
ReplyDeleteI'd always thought of the message of Rainbow Factory of simply being a way of saying that weather control is serious business. This is definitely a very dark take on it, I wonder if the animator came up with this idea, or Wooden Toaster did.

@CaptainDash Well based on what you're saying, I must work in a completely different way. I've read the fanfics and have had reactions to them. So by extension, I've seen all the 'cruelty' done onto Rainbow But when I watch the show, I set everything aside and just focus on that. The Rainbow I see in the show is a separate thing from the Rainbow I see in the fanfics.

Rainbow Factory is the scariest thing I have ever seen1 (That has to do with ponies) of course I try to avoid the scariest things.

ReplyDeleteI found it a little more disturbing than cupcakes, if only because it was better-written and closer to the original characterizations. I enjoy the occasional dark read, though.
That being said, an excellent selection of PMVs. I really like the Ponies What are British series.
@Kyronea Yes, it is a gore laden fanfic but honestly the story is better than that of Cupcakes even if it is no marvel of literature. While Cupcakes is a mostly shock value this has some interesting plot to it.

ReplyDeleteI feel like there are a few reasons why a fic like cupcakes might be like that, because I had a similar reaction, but that's because I had mentally over-prepared myself as a result of all the hype. I actually saw a trailer for it a few times that more or less showed everything Pinkie did, so in the end I wasn't surprised when I read the story.
I see. Thank you for the answers, everypony. Still, I think I'll skip that one. I dislike grimdark. (Though I have read the occasional fic...specifically Fallout Equestria...but then everypony's read that one.)

When I first got into this, Cupcakes was one of those things that kept getting tossed around, and then it didn't take me long to find out what it was all about. I actually didn't read it until about two or three weeks ago, and like I said, I was left thinking "that's what all the hype was about?" I might have had a different reaction if I hadn't known so much about it beforehand, but that's just how it went down.

I think the whole pinecone thing started with Slugbox doing a thing were every 100 of ther Parodic Pony Pin-Ups booklet thing they sold, they'd draw a certain anthrofied version of the characters, and on the list, it said they'd eat a pinecone on a livestream if 1000 were sold.

ReplyDeleteHmm, I've been enjoying the Rainbow Factory song since I first heard it in Everfree's top 100 (my pony pic and fic folders are sizable, but I only recently got into fan music that isn't remixed from the show). This latest PMV only makes the song that much cooler.
ReplyDeleteThink I might have to look into the Fanfic it inspired. Grimdark is not usually my thing, at least not the gory kind, but if I was able to bring myself to read Cupcakes, all be it after months of holding off, then Rainbow Factory should be easy.
Oh, and the return of the British Ponies is most delightful. Can't comment on the One Piece vid though, as my familiarity with the source material is close to zero.

ReplyDeletei thought the exact same thing after reading cupcakes. i was like "thats it? thats what i have been afraid of for months? wow! what i had running through my head based on what i heard about it was much worse !" so now knowing that cupcakes is tamer then anything i have in my head i read grimdark fics as if they are nothing.
though as i said i still don't like scootabuse. but hey i would rather read grimdark fic then sad fic . . .i avoid sad fic like the plague after reading "bittersweet". i have never cried like i did after reading that fic in my life.

@coldshoulder That makes two of us. I was expecting a total blood bath, but got something completely different. And I don't really touch sad fics unless they're worth reading. Bittersweet was a real tearjerker, but Final Dreams Of A Filly still breaks me down when I dare take a look at it. It's a wonder I can do what I said and block it all out during an episode. But like @CaptainDash said, the ponies in the show are different from the ponies in the fanfics and that's the formula I go by when the show starts playing.

I don't get the whole Rainbow Factory thing. I had heard it was very dark and just so good and creepy and disturbing and etc. and when I read it, my reaction was simply that it's bad. Badly written, badly characterized, badly plotted, just shoddy all the way around.

ReplyDeleteya and since i am sine i am also a warhammer 40k and have been since i was young grimdark was a place i visited quite often throughout my life.
ye i know i don't count them as being in the same universe at all as well. cannon ponies are not the same to fannon ponies no mater how close they get. that's the only way i can look at pinkie's smiling face without a tear coming to my eye after reading bittersweet. (that fic really REALLY did a number on me) but i have read some sad fic afterword but that's because they were happy sad and a very good read.

but as i said it made me bawl out cry. it made my hear break for my favorite pony. after reading it i had to repeat the words "shes not dead, shes not dead, she is stile alive! i will see her again in next weeks episode! shes not dead! " over and over and over again. this has made me more afraid of sad fics then i am of grimdark fics. that's all i have to say on the subject of bittersweet.
Hmm, the Rainbow Factory PMV wasn't bad. More simplistic but that's fine. I'm surprised I haven;t seen more fully-animated PMV's to it yet really.

Hmm, I think I preferred the other ponies what are British more than that one, even pushing english as old-tymey as you can go it's a little overdone. Accents are pretty good though, it's not bad at all.

ReplyDeletePinecone was a forced brony meme, started by one brony who basically spoke to every artist he could in an attempt to keep it going. It still shows up from time to time, but even at the height of its success has never touched ponies in socks.
ReplyDelete@CityFlyer502 frankly the only way I can read some of the fics out there is remembering these characters are essentially actors in the fic. given a bad script they will act horribly, but given a good script the performance is wonderful. look at gen 3 ponies, such wonderful voice acting, but no talent put into the writing, do you blame the voice actors? no, you blame the hack writers. so no, do not blame any pony for how they act in a bad fic.

@Steel Resolve In no instance was I blaming anybody. We were just talking about how some people read the fanfics and then have their views of the show characters distorted. Whereas I read the fanfics, but keep both worlds completely separate. I don't watch the show and think Pinkie is a psychotic murderer. Or that Rainbow is having a fling with Twilight. No. The instant the show starts rolling, all of that gets thrown out the window.

The song is nice and creepy enough without a fic explaining what happens in gory detail. I think part of the effect of the Rainbow Factory is the haunting lyrics, combined with those awesome strings, and leaving the rest to your imagination. I'd rather not see that spoiled.

I read Rainbow Factory. The characterization was terrible. From the first time I heard a pony swear there, I thought "This is kinda stupid. Ponies don't act like this, and certainly don't treat others this way." And then we got to the point where Dr. Exposition explained what the machine actually was and concluded that, were it not so gruesome, it would actually be hilarious.

(Music source is Believe by Folder5) ANYWAYS, always like the source music rather than the abridged versions used in opening/ending themes; I remember seeing the reactions for Japan getting a Subbed version of the first Episodes of MLP:FiM, pretty funny. Wonder if they would do something similar to the Powerpuff Girls -> Powerpuff Girls Z (or PPZ?);
